We had lunch at Hu Tieu My Tho today and I thought the food was delicious. When it comes to Vietnamese food in metro Atlanta, I think this restaurant is among the better options and my Asian/Vietnamese foodie friends generally agree. Where this place lacks - at least in our experience today - is in service and ambiance (even by casual Vietnamese restaurant standards). Hu Tieu My Tho opened in October 2019 and is located in the popular Hong Kong Supermarket shopping center on Jimmy Carter Blvd, near I-85 exit 99. Locals know this as the hub for the Vietnamese community in Atlanta. On weekends and holidays, it can get crowded. The restaurant name comes from the Vietnamese dish "hu tieu," which is a clear rice noodle dish, and "My Tho," which is the specific southern city in Vietnam where this style of cuisine was perfected. This is not a pho restaurant. Instead, this place specializes in both hu tieu and "mi" (egg noodles) as well as other dishes like Vietnamese steak and eggs. It's fairly unique, which is a big part of the draw and appeal. Here's what three of us had: A1. Goi Cuon (2 for $5.50) x2 - spring rolls with shrimp and pork A3. When it comes to the hu tieu, the restaurant gives you the option of soft or firm noodle texture. In addition, you can get dishes "dry" (no soup) or with soup. If it's your first time, you should try the traditional way with soup. I really like the variety of hu tieu and mi offered here; for example, my friend likes the Phnom Penh-style noodle soup, which is Cambodian. Overall, I found the food to be solid all around. After we were initially seated and served, the staff never checked on us again. I think this was partly because they were busy. I noticed at least two other tables having the same problem we did -- having to flag down a server. As for ambiance, seating was tight. I actually refrained from ordering an extra dish because of the lack of table space. And, while not uncommon for Vietnamese restaurants, multiple tables weren't immediately cleaned. My friend recommended this place. I asked her recommendations for pho in Norcross and this was one of the places. She recommended that I try - Hu Tieu Nam Vang or the Hu Tieu My Tho - I got the dark chicken rice noodle. I did a to go order. If you online there is no translation for the menu so I went there for translation. The menus in the store have English description and the guy at the register was helpful in answering my questions. I ended up trying dark chicken noodle soup because I wasn't brave enough yet for intestines etc. I shared my order with my 9 year old and were very pleased. The broth was well seasoned. It had lots of flavor and it wasn't salty. I asked for some sauces and they gave it to me with my order. It was so good and filling. I will definitely be back to try more soups and other dishes. This place is located in the plaza of the Hong Kong supermarket. Parking was pretty simple but it was full. Inside was quiet and there were very nice Christmas decorations. Instead of pho, you can come here and try a different type of noodle dish. THere are ones with broth, there are others without. The dish that I got was on the sweeter side, but I thought it was nice. I got the combination: Hu Tieu My Tho Dac Biet. If there is a combination option, that's what I always go for just because it's just a mix of everything. And I can never say no to a kitchen medley of flavors and ingredients. There's plenty of parking and also plenty of seating. If you don't know what type of Hu Tieu you would like to try, I always recommend to just try the combination and then you can figure out if you like it or not. The best dry hu tieu noodle I've had inside the states. Thought Hu Tieu Nam Vang in San Jose, CA was the sh't but this Norcross biz blew it outta wata and I'm humbled. As the name of the restaurant implies, this spot sells hu tieu. I like that this spot doesn't focus on pho and highlights other great Vietnamese noodle soups. You can order the dry or soup version with various toppings and meats. The dry one comes with a small bowl of soup on the side and is my preferred way of eating this meal. read more

We were in the area and saw this restaurant so we decided to give it a try. I went and tried it on a super hot day so it was kind of hot up in there. I still tried their pho, though. We got in about lunch time, and were seated right away. I felt the service was pretty quick. From the time we ordered our food, it didn't take long at all to get our food. I tried the pho dac biet and I liked the broth. I liked that the broth wasn't too sweet. It was just perfect for me. It also came out with a lot of garnishments so I liked that a lot. As the name indicates, this place is famous for Hu Tieu My Tho, the noodle soup from My Tho city of the South of Vietnam. You have 2 choices: regular meaning with the broth, like phở, or "dried" with the broth and pirky bones on the side. I went with the dried one, and loved it. I will say, whenever I'm rating a place on yelp, it's rarely for service, but I cannot help mention every time I come here, I am served by the same waiter who tends to neglect my table to the point where I have to get up and ask for my food I've ordered. That being said, the food here is consistently the same; my favorite order is the Bo ne, a savory beef skillet served with other delicious components (pate, cheese, Chinese sausage, etc.) and bread on the side. They did downsize on their bread, though, from when it first opened, so they only give you one loaf opposed to two. Their smoothies are good (whenever I actually get them) and same with their desserts. Their shrimp dishes I do not mess with because they did smell a bit fishy. I was craving soup, something hot and comforting on this raining, Winter afternoon. I thought I'd go for ramen, udon, or pho--my go-to choices--but I happened to come by this restaurant. What to order at a hu tieu restaurant? The hu tieu, of course! The service was quick and my order came within minutes. I had a side plate of bean sprouts, pickled jalapeños and garlic, and lemon wedges to add to my bowl, a good amount, too. There was even a tiny container of pepper flakes! As for the essential condiments, they were available at the table: fish sauce, hoisin, sriracha, etc. I ordered mine with broth (it can be served on the side) and I'm so glad I did. While I would have loved my bowl to be served hotter, it was still fulfilling. There was plenty of pork slices and decent size shrimp. The broth wasn't too bland or too salty. Their broth is so flavorful it had me picking up the bowl and drinking every last drop as if I were in a food eating competition. I had the Hu Tieu Tho Dac Biet, which has glass noodles (I think I might try it with egg noodles next time), quail eggs, varieties of cut pork, shrimp, liver, herbs and vegetables. Ordered this on a whim thinking it would be similar to a childhood favorite with elbow macaroni but it was with shells. Otherwise the broth had good flavors (you know it's legit when there is a piece of bone in the bowl of broth they serve). There's a variety of protein including shrimp, char siu, and quail eggs. It's located in the same shopping center as Hong Kong Supermarket on Jimmy Carter Blvd. In terms of interior they are reasonably sized with ample seating space and arrangements. Decor wise it's basic, nothing too fancy. They have TV's on most walls that display the menu options along with some music videos. Menu wise, it's mostly noodle type dishes both dry soup based. I recommend trying out their namesake noodle dish. To me the broth here is very rich and flavorful, maybe a little on the sweet side for some, feel free to add fish sauce if you like that salty taste. It's really based on personal taste preference. Overall though I enjoyed my meal. Definitely worth checking out if you want something other than just same old Pho. read more

My mom finally visited me in GA! I legit told her she'd love it here because there is a large Vietnamese community, and tons of restaurants and grocery stores. She was convinced I was making her cook 24/7 while here, but nope. My mom saw Hu Tieu and said she wanted to try. Day 1: She had Hu Tieu Combo with rice noodles, I did the combo with the glass noodles. It was delightful especially on these cold GA mornings. The broth was sweet and savory. Lots of pork and shrimp in my bowl. Mom had a Vietnamese coffee because she was not adjusting to the time change. She said it was way too strong she had to go get more condensed milk. LOL. Day 2: I tried Bho Kho (beef stew) with egg noodles, Mo got the seafood noodles (Hu Tieu Hai San) and mom tried the dry seafood noodles (Hu Tieu Hai San Kho). Let me tell you, my mom's noodles was on point. No idea what that garlicky sauce was but LOVED her dish. I wasn't crazy about my bo kho. It didn't have additional findings you'd find in bo kho such as tendons and tripe. Mo said his seafood noodle was delicious. We all ordered iced lemon tea. Drink was also strong, more tea flavor than lemon flavor. Mo barely touched his drink. Day 3: I did the dry seafood noodles my mom got and she did chao long (rice porridge + pork blood and liver, etc). Everything my mom got was good. I loved the crispy bread they give you to eat with chao. So fresh and crispy. I of course, loved the noodles because of the garlic flavor!! Mmmh. Mom tried one of the drinks from their display case and loved it. I stuck to my water - since it tasted pretty decent (not that iron / metal tasting water). I wasn't impressed with this place at all. This was a new restaurant that opened up in this plaza, so decided to try it out. Upon entering, the sign says "Please wait to be seated." We waited about 10 minutes before someone came to seat us. There were plenty of tables available and it was not even busy, and the employees saw us but made no effort to greet us and was in no rush to seat us. Just when we were about to leave, we were finally seated. I noticed that other groups of people who came in after us sometimes had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. My boyfriend ordered the wonton noodles, I ordered the dry combination noodles, it came with a side of soup. The meat in the dry combination looked questionable so we tried to flag down someone to ask them if it had any beef in it (I don't eat beef). It took a while to try to get someone to stop by so my food was cold by the time that happened. I didn't like the sauce that came with the dry noodles, it was really unappetizing. I tried to fix it by pouring the side soup in the bowl but it did not help at all. It tasted so bad that I actually lost my appetite, despite being really hungry before coming here. I'm trying to give this place a chance but it's just not hitting the spot for me. The first time, I had the Hu Tieu My Tho Dac Biet ($13). It came out looking delicious but upon further inspection, it was highly disappointing. After removing the two giant pieces of pork hock, my bowl of deliciousness was reduced by half. The broth was reminiscent of pho broth and lacked the aromatic flavors from the chives, Chinese celery and fried onions. The iced coffee ($4.50) was not what I was expecting. I grew up with Vietnamese coffee having sweetened condensed milk, not just half & half. The second time, I tried the Mi Quang. This was a pretty good. What I found odd was the 2 colors of noodles in my soup. I realize the noodles turn yellow because of the broth but I had light yellow and dark yellow noodles. This was our first Hu Tieu specialty place and it was delicious! We really enjoyed the ambiance and the dishes. From VPop music to the variety of the dishes, we were impressed. Ordered: - Hu Tieu Dac Biet (5/5). Yummy. The light fish broth went well with the different cuts of meat. I love the egg noodle and how refreshing and firm it was - Banh Mi Chao (5/5). Delicious. This tasted similar to Vietnam from the pate, laughing cow cheese, and different cuts of meat. From what I learn, pho is North Vietnamese and hu tieu is South Vietnamese while bun bo hue is Central Vietnamese. Pho is made from rice flour. Hu Tieu is made from tapioca flour. Mi is made from wheat flour and eggs. Open as early as 9:30 AM too! Gotta love the murals. Attentive, knowledgeable staff. They have a 7 noodle dish that is only $18.99 but gotta come hungry! Decided to try Hu Tieu My Tho as my last meal before the long drive home from ATL and I'm so happy that I did! We ordered more than pictured below so sorry about that. I got the Hu Tieu My Tho Dac Biet with the soup on the side + chao long; I was impressed on how flavorful both items were. Next time around, I'd like to try the tougher noodles rather than the soft one I ordered just because it was a little too much on the soft and mushy side for me. The chao long was my favorite and that's because I'm a huge fan of all chao. It was seasoned rightfully with the right amount of intestines. The bread sticks that comes along with it were crunchy and that's rare. My bf got the fried won tons + the bo ne; this dish was much bigger than we've expected but definitely not complaining about that. It was as good as the presentation displayed right here in the picture. The fried won tons weren't his favorite and his reasoning for that was there's too much meat... wait, what? Haha. Walked in at 10:30AM and it was pretty crowded. Diners were spaced out due to COVID-19 safety guidelines though. Server sat my boyfriend and I down pretty quickly. We ordered the 'Crispy Fried Wonton' as our appetizer. I wasn't a fan of it but my man loved it. I ordered the 'Wonton W Egg Noodle Soup' and boyfriend ordered the 'Hu Tieu My Tho Special'. It was busy during lunch hours on Monday. We waited like 5 minutes to be seated. We chose hủ tiếu mỹ tho khô sợi dai (chewy noodles with sauces) and cơm thập cẩm (fried rice). The worst customer service ever, especially when you dine in alone. Even though I came first and waited till my turn, they seated and served other people that came after me. I saw an empty table but still went to front desk to ask for one, and one of servers said had there been available table she would've seated me right away.
