There aren't a lot of dining options along the 215-mile drive through the rural countryside on I-40 between Memphis and Nashville that aren't fast food outlets, but Hub City Deli provided my dining companion and I with an unexpectedly pleasant lunchtime meal just off I-40 and US 45 Bypass in Jackson, Tennessee. No matter whether Jackson is your destination to visit the Rock-a-Billy Hall of Fame or Casey Jones Railroad Museum or you're just passing through on the trip between Memphis and Nashville like us, Hub City Deli offers freshly-made and tasty food in a casual, cafeteria-style ambiance at a very reasonable price point. The lunch and dinner menu offers a variety of sandwiches, wraps, and salads or you can build-your-own from a variety of high-quality ingredients. Everything on the menu is made-to-order, so place your order at the counter with the friendly and helpful staff, grab a soda or iced tea from the self-serve soda fountain or a bottled beverage from the cooler at the counter, then have a seat at a table while your food is prepared to order. On my visit, I had the Half Sandwich/Half Soup or Salad ($8) -- a 1/2 portion of the Italian sandwich, featuring salami, prosciutto, bologna, a spicy pepper relish called giardiniera, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar on a hoagie roll along with a cup-sized portion of the brisket chili -- served with an in-house made and a snack bag of locally-produced potato chips. I thought the sandwich was pretty tasty and very filling, but I wasn't thrilled the chef had taken the liberty to add a dollop of mayonnaise on top of the oil and vinegar, and the brisket chili was fairly good but it was definitely more kidney bean-forward with only 1-2 small pieces of brisket. My dining companion had the Turkey-Avocado sandwich ($13), with smoked turkey, bacon, cheddar cheese, avocado spread, tomato, lettuce, and mayonnaise - served with an in-house made pickle and a side salad. She enjoyed her sandwich and salad but thought the mayonnaise wasn't necessary on the sandwich given the moisture already provided by the guacamole spread and would recommend skipping that ingredient. I'll blame our sensitive northern palates for our aversion to extra mayonnaise. There's plenty of parking in the shopping center parking lot. PRO TIP: Hub City Deli displays a variety of art produced by local artists which rotates periodically and is available for sale. read more

Save your money. Walk across the street to McAlisters. We paid about $14.00 for this sandwich and waited 32 minutes for it to be made. Why? Because on a Friday night there was one dude making every meal while the guy in the front packed up salad dressing. It was absolutely ridiculous. read more

The service is good. The quality of food is good. However, it's just not worth what you pay for. They recently cut the meat portion of their sandwiches by one ounce. If I'm paying $13 for a sandwich, I don't want to be hungry when I leave. If it was really necessary, I'd rather pay a bit more than have them cut my portion size. This should be called Catfish Deli. The restaurant has excellent street appeal. It is clean and well maintained in the seating and drinks station areas. "Excellent vibes" if you will. We placed an order for an Italian and a French dip as they were sold out of the Rueben option. The food came out without the advertised pickles and the service team had disappeared. The sandwiches were the definition of catfishing. Peach butcher paper with all the looks of an excellent sandwich. The cheese slices were the thickest part of the sandwich and they lacked in substance. My wife's Italian was dry and flavorless. The oil and vinegar being non-existent. Giardiniera with olives? No thanks. My French dip was advertised with a horseradish mayo; I think it was mayo with the idea of horseradish. Jus was nothing special. 3 slices of roast beef. The service was wonderful here! I was greeted upon entering and had a few questions and asked for some recommendations, as I was seeking a good healthy salad! The girl taking my order was very helpful, as well as one of the guys from the kitchen... I wish I had gotten their names.. The vibes were great here. There were a few other patrons smiling and giggling near me as they enjoyed their meals. The restaurant was very clean and I absolutely enjoyed my salad! It was very fresh and made to order! So much for trying to eat healthy as I couldn't resist the gorgeous pies they had. They tasted awesome too but would of been better warmed! Thank you guys! I've been here on during both my visits to Jackson and both times have been equally pleasant. Very kind and friendly staff. The decor has a very L.A. and San Francisco type vibe, which is a nice contrast to the rest of the cowboy ambiance you see throughout Jackson's restaurants. Not the best around but a solid option for someone looking for something different. Bun was well toasted and meat was just right. Hub City is such a nice environment to go inside and have a meal. Such a gem in Jackson. If you don't frequent here, you should. The Mac and cheese was rich and creamy as always. Maybe they could throw the Mac and cheese on top of the burger and make something phenomenal. Now I want to go try that myself.
