I go to RDM to work on a regular basis and this is the hotel I try to book. The Best Western that I stayed in on one of my first visits was unspeakable. This HI lets me request and use my digital key without a front desk visit first which is great when I don't get there until late after work. In other respects it's what you expect from this Hilton brand. Rooms are clean. Beds are comfortable. You get plenty of room to repack and there's a little fridge to keep your drinks and leftovers. An oven as well if you need it. Prices rise with the temperatures in the summer so book it early if you know you're going or you'll get stuck with the Comfort Inn where the patronage is on the sketchy side.

I got good sleep and despite it not being top floor, I had no dancing neighbors above me. Instead, I had the neighbors that checked into 230 or 232 across the hall. The host handed me the key to room 229 and as I approached the door of my room in the hallway, I could see a woman with all her crap on the floor sifting through it looking for something. I didn't think any more of it and spent some time sorting through my things getting ready for work later that evening. I was hungry so I went downstairs to see what they offered in the pantry, found nothing that appealed and walked back to the stairs to floor 2. A wiry, angry looking man in a white T-shirt came down the hall towards me and went into the room where I'd seen the woman before. Again, didn't think much of it... until the screaming and shouting began. There were expletives and plenty of hate for an hour. I thought I heard someone getting hit and at one time I heard the woman screaming HELP over and over. I called the front desk, but no one answered, and I definitely didn't want to leave my room. The woman left and found she'd been locked out and started pounding on the door asking for her phone. (Yes, I could easily hear all this inside or outside their room from inside my room.) They finally left still screaming at each other thankfully so I was able to sneak out and get to the airport to do my job. When I returned the privacy tag was on their door and I hoped that was it. It wasn't. At 7:45 they started screaming and yellling again. I heard something being thrown. The man claimed she'd hit him in the head and she said it wasn't true. They left the room again with the man shouting "you're going to jail, bitch!" I'm shocked no one else heard this on floor 2. I checked out and left the hotel. Odds are, this is probably a one-off occurrence, but it'll make me think twice when I'm choosing between Hampton and Comfort Suites.

Now, to preface, I am not going to claim that this (or any) Motel 6 is a five-star hotel. They're just not. They serve one purpose: budget accommodations for the road weary (or cheap) traveler. I'm not a travel snob by any means, and I've stayed at a Motel 6 before, and not all of the experiences have been pleasant. But this particular location has done quite a bit to salvage their reputation. This last weekend, my wife and I decided to take a day trip to Bend with our dogs, fully intending to return home the same day. When our day trip ran late into the evening hours (due to a chance encounter with some of my wife's friends from high school), we found ourselves facing a dilemma: drive home in the middle of the night, or find a dog-friendly hotel in the area. The former seemed unappealing, and the latter nearly impossible: most of the animal-accommodating accommodations were fully booked...save for a Motel 6 in Redmond, 15-minutes away. The rate ($79) was pretty damned reasonable, and we weren't exactly flush with choices. Upon arrival, we found the lobby to be pristine clean; a short line of customers checking in was quickly processed, and our own check in took little more than a minute. We trotted our puppers up to the room and settled in. Our room, Spartan and sparsely furnished, was clean and free of odors. The bed itself was raised up on metal leg posts, which were wrapped in foam to prevent shin-smacking. There will be no accolades awarded for the decor (blood orange curtains and Ikea-quality evoke the feeling of sleeping in a conference room), but the bed and pillows were surprisingly comfortable. I slept like a rock. I heard none of our adjoining guests (or their pets), despite the motel being fully booked. Check out took all of three seconds to drop off the card key. In short, the Redmond Motel 6 did their job competently, efficiently, and provided a clean, safe and convenient respite for us and our doggos. If I ever find myself in a similar scenario in the future, I won't be turning up my nose at the thought of staying at a Motel 6 again, if they can compare with the quality of the experience I was privy to here in Redmond.
