I'm not even sure where to begin. In summary, a very good experience--but an experience. I was here…read morein search of cane syrup, understand, from out of town--just visiting after an afternoon at the springs and dinner at O'Neal's Buffet. My friend and local guide to Madison told me I needed to check here for the syrup--it's where he gets fishing tackle . . . yes, at a grocery store. There are like three aisles of just fishing tackle and reels and rods. In a grocery store. That's the first sign you're somewhere special. And there's like half an aisle of camping gear, as well. The store otherwise seems larger than most IGAs I've been to before and well-stocked. They didn't have pure cane syrup but they had an astounding variety of cane syrup blends: Gilley's, Daddy Buck's, Delta, and others. Cane syrup, like maple syrup, is expensive when pure so it often gets blended with other sweeteners--I use it in baking so that's overall ok by me. They may also have been out because we're right upon the season when it's traditionally made, so last year's supply may be running low and this year's not to market just yet. Aside from the syrups, they had a great baking aisle in general: lots of cornbread and other savory mixes (hushpuppies, et cetera), cake mixes, and Goodman's Extracts which Publix doesn't carry and other stores may at best have just their vanilla but they make good, stranger flavored, extracts like caramel and black walnut. If you want to know if people in a given community like to bake, go to the local grocery store, check out the extracts: if they have a vast selection, you've got serious bakers around. The smell of this store is unlike anything I've ever smelled before: not bad, but just weird. Maybe plasticky, not quite chemical, not quite food, again not bad but just strange. Still, this store is a winner in my book, it feels a bit out of the 80s, a bit stuck in time, but a gem all the same.

At checkout at Bob and Jeff's I realized I didn't have my credit card and not enough cash to pay…read morefor my groceries. The checkout person paid the balance for me! That would never happen at Publix. Bob and Jeff's is the best.

Despite common assumptions about the palates of South Georgia's residents and the prevalence of…read morechain restaurants and fast food, there are plenty of foodies out there, and quite a few ethical eaters who would love to see selections of better quality and more humane treatment of animals around them. They should all know about this farm! This is the store and farm for Thompson Farms; they also sell their stuff at Whole Foods, from my short bout of Googling about them. First off, Google Maps lies - this is way further down Dixie Rd, and you can't miss the sign. Luckily, the people at the store talked me through getting there the first time around, and they were super helpful. You'll come in on a well-kept dirt road, and see some of the best real estate given to pigs anywhere. No uninviting "Ew, this is a meat farm" smell, because they're fair about taking care of their pigs; they do it right. The products are somehow both cheap and amazing. Even the mild sausage has a bit of a kick, and the way it fries up was a revelation to me the first time I cooked it. You'll get an amount of drippings equal to what you get out of your average bacon - perfect for making a killer gravy, sauce, or soup. Speaking of bacon - it's very high-quality, traditional (no, there aren't three different wood smoke variations or, sadly, thicker cuts), and under six bucks for a pound. They even had some free-range eggs from the farm, good stuff. I haven't had the ribs, ham, or pork steaks yet, but considering this visit, that's on the agenda for later. Give these guys your money, put way better food on the table, and give the factory farms the boot!

Opened the 2nd and got hit with the same foul smell but this one had some visible mold. Baffled how 2 out of 2 would be spoiled. Reached out to their customer service via email. Their Quality Assurance Manager Koren Rideout responded right away with her concern. I provided her with the info n pics she requested. She assured me a couple replacement jars would be sent out right away. I was very impressed with their customer service (at first). Then 3 weeks go by with nothing showing up, as I never received confirmation or tracking, just her word. So I reached out and she stated she forgot but provided tracking. Soon as the package arrived I opened it to find she only shipped 1 instead 2 like she mentioned. Eager to try the jam I opened it right away, only to be smacked in the face for the 3rd time with a foul smell of stinky behind. I reached out right away to Koren to let her know but she never responded back. At this point I am writing this company off. Customer service started great, then became non existent. 3 out of 3 jars spoiled which shows there is a serious quality control issue going on. I was willing to ship that jar back, so they can smell if for themselves.
