(Tookout 07/06/2025 SU @ 5:30pm): Sushi Makoto had some big shoes to fill in the neighborhood! In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes and things to do throughout Jersey City and specifically the Heights, I visited the newest sushi place in the neighborhood... Sushi Makoto. Having officially opened in the former Ichiban-To-Go location two weekends prior to my visit, there was an absence of sushi in the entire area, which was shocking to me! I truly loved Ichiban-To-Go and was sad to see it actually go! Would Makoto's sushi be made with honesty and sincerity!? PURCHASE Miso Soup ($2.50): A nice simple way to wet the kisser. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=4ucF0lMWpaCfuWExsvZA3Q 8pc Mixed Tempura ($9.00): From shrimp to vegetables, each piece was large and lovely. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=Pj7mVJBA6Fnli-yiIPPtJQ 7pc Shrimp Shumai ($7.00): Small and minimal flavor, these were my least favorite of the meal. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=SmCJs-Qd_AuTuXBWffj8uw 2pc Shrimp Nigiri ($4.50): Fresh and meaty, we should've ordered more! 2pc Yellowtail Nigiri ($5.50): Buttery, fresh, and meaty, these were dangerously good! 6pc Classic Yellowtail Scallion Cut Roll ($8.00): Smaller portion, tiny in size, and a tad bland, I was disappointed. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=ojhf4eMS7WXnry16wixsIg 6pc Classic Scallop Cut Roll ($8.00): Smaller portion (I guess all "classic" rolls were like this), tiny in size, but a bit more flavorful, this was better. 6pc Chef Special Godzilla Cut Roll ($16.00): A deep-fried cut roll made with spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, tobiko, scallion with chef's special sauce, this was massive in size, flavors from everywhere, and the outside wrap was like trying to eat through Godzilla's skin - seriously - and I loved it! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=dVdK2k8gda59u7Tobr2w4A 8pc Chef Special Makoto Sushi Cut Roll ($18.00): Made with spicy tuna, king crab, avocado, tempura shrimp, and eel and honey wasabi sauce, this was an awesome seafood overload! 8pc Chef Special Kani Firecracker Cut Roll ($16.00): Made with shrimp tempura, avocado, and spicy crunch kani salad, the mild spiciness was immediate while there were plenty of shrimp. And, the Chef Special rolls were noticeably larger and thicker than the Classic rolls. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=mjEQWuZy7H9tSlTN6QKZZA SERVICE I easily placed my order over the phone for a designated pick up time, a kind young female repeated the order with the total (they offered a grand opening discount!), and when I arrived everything was packed up as I quickly paid and went on my merry way - easy-peasy and arigato! PARKING (FREE; N/A this instance) This was a moot point since I walked the flat 10-minute distance. Although I didn't notice any parking lot, there seemed to be plenty of spots along the main drag of Palisade Ave. and all surrounding side streets - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE An open floorplan https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=VGfW92P4i8U9U-tW_UMKbQ with the order counter and sushi prep bar the focal point, there was some seating at the sushi bar and then several tables lined the walls. There were minimal Japanese motifs. Decent natural lighting came through the front windows while soul-sucking fluorescent electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. I couldn't recall any TVs or background music. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=2K7E8MF-GujyB2kvmttfPQ ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL I was very happy that Sushi Makoto filled the sushi void left by Ichiban-To-Go, and I would definitely visit them again the next time I was in town. By default, there were no other options in walking distance, but thankfully, the food was very good, the prices were affordable, they had an extensive menu, and the service was easy and friendly. And, I was glad they had a dine-in option. Plus, I always preferred to support small mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $100.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

For my first visit, I ordered simple rolls that you can't mess up just to gauge the quality of the sushi and it was so fresh and favorable I was so surprised. I ended up visiting two days in a row because it was so so good. And since then, I've had countless take out and dine in experiences that have been darn near perfect. Such a great and necessary addition to the heights. Please support this business! They had big shoes to fill in and they are exceeding expectations.

Any Three Roll Lunch Special (~$16)
Aya E.

Ordered: Any Three Roll Lunch Special (~$16): salmon avocado, spicy tuna, yellowtail scallion Hibachi Chicken Lunch Box (~$14): with soup, gyoza (substituted pork for veggie), California roll, and white rice Aya's take: It's been hard to find a good sushi lunch deal in the area so I decided to check out Sushi Makoto's lunch menu which is reasonably priced and has a good selection. Lunch hours are 11am-3:30pm Mon-Sat. Price/value is a 4/5 but the taste/quality is 3/5. The fish in the Any Three Roll Lunch Special was actually super fresh, good quality, and didn't have that fishy taste. However, there was a lot of rice and it looks like they used the wrong kind of rice. The rice wasn't sticky enough, fell apart easily, and wasn't seasoned at all. As for the Hibachi Chicken Lunch Box, the chicken had good flavor but there was barely any chicken. The rice they use appears to be the same one they used to roll the sushi which is definitely not the short grain version. The gyoza were surprisingly good with a nice filling and crispy exterior. The soup was a bit questionable; I've never had miso soup that was slightly on the sweet side. Also, there was a big difference in the amount of tofu and seaweed in the 2 containers we got per person. Lastly, I wanted to use the $3 off $30 coupon they had in their menu but the worker told me it's not applicable at lunch. Nowhere on the coupon's fine print does it say that and for a new business, I was surprised at the lack of hospitality. Not sure if I'll be back anytime soon as maybe these are a few kinks the business is working out first.

Medium Party tray ($50)
Li W.

My husband and I got a takeout Medium Party Tray on a Saturday evening. It comes with 8 regular rolls and 2 special tools and was $50. It came out to about 3 servings for us, but we eat a lot so maybe it's not indicative of a normal serving size haha. The sushi hits the spot but it's not like the best sushi you've ever had, if you know what I mean. My husband commented that one of the rolls seemed to have stale rice, but I personally thought the rice was okay. Overall we would probably come back since the prices are very reasonable and location is convenient, but it probably wouldn't be our top sushi spot. Glad to see there is a local sushi spot now in the Heights!

The whole staff is amazing & makes me & my family feel like family every time ! 10/10 PS the ceviche is TO DIE FOR. Try it.

Ikura with egg (tremendous) Naruto yellowtail King crab avocado California roll Cool platter!

WE FINALLY HAVE A REAL SUSHI PLACE IN THE JERSEY CITY HEIGHTS. First of all, they've transformed the small walk in that used to be Ichiban to Go, into a nice modern looking sushi spot with ample space and seating, I was shocked. (Pic in the review). Met the owner/manager and he's smart and determined to succeed. They import their fish in daily, they are looking for quality with sharp pricing, they are looking into different partnerships with the neighborhood and giving back, and are almost soft opening so as to focus on quality first before they expand to some fun neighborhood nights (while maintaining quality). Our waitress was also very very nice and attentive to our kids, they gave them the beginner chopsticks right as we sat down. To the food. We started with the Yellowtail Jalapeño app which is a staple these days, I eat a lot of sushi a lot of places in JC (Honshu my top) and - this beat them all. Should have done 2. And incredible start I almost cried a tear of joy that JC Heights finally got a sushi spot. Next we had the sushi Entree - kind of your classic mix of sushi with the spicy tuna roll. Really good - sushi is fresh and I'm rarely amazed by spicy tuna, but it was solid. The next dish, my goodness, I've never done Ikura with Egg, but incredible. Next to the yellowtail app that was my favorite and nothing was beating the yellowtail app. The Naruto yellowtail was really cool and good too. Presentation of that whole platter was nice. King crab avocado was super rich, was a fan but it filled me up. California roll - a solid classic. My little one got some sticky sushi rice and it delivered, quality rice here. She also didn't want to leave her soup, so I think she gives the place high regards. Heck of a first impression here overall, I'll be back often, I'll perfect my meal lineup over time as there's like 80 different routes to go here, they even have a sea urchin app that sounds amazing, but not carrying due to it being out of season. In all, the heights not only has a REAL sushi place, but a place that can compete with the best. Oh and it's BYOB! PLEASE support them - we can't let a good thing go to waste. Also they're open from like 11-9 or 10.

Great food, very nice atmosphere inside (definitely not just a takeout place, have been here for date night and loved it). Friendly waitress and food came out promptly - made at the sushi bar right in front of us. New neighborhood favorite!

Is there a way to order a physical gift card on an actual website?

Unfortunately, I don't think they have gotten that advanced yet. They are strictly a mom & pop business with minimal web presence.

I got the to the max with 3 proteins and basically all the veggies and toppings included. Really delicious and enjoyable food that also tasted healthy. Service (4/5): I ordered pickup through door dash and had no issues. Order was done fast. Only thing is I wish they included cups of water that we could drink. Ambiance (5/5): nice shop with plenty of bench and stool sitting. It's well lit and has nice music playing.

For anyone else trying to find it, it's actually inside the building on the first floor, so don't be thrown off by the directions. I ordered the "You Create Plenty" bowl with two proteins. I went with half white rice, half mixed greens, tuna and spicy tuna, scallions, cucumber, edamame, mango, ginger, masago, spicy mayo, sesame seeds, and shredded nori. The bowl was flavorful, fresh, and very filling! It was perfect for a late lunch or early dinner. However, I'm giving it four stars because the proportions were a bit off. There was way too much ginger, not nearly enough mango, and definitely more white rice than mixed greens, despite ordering a half-and-half base. Still, it hit the spot, and I'd come back again!

(Overall: D) - Overall, I felt like there were a number of technical misses by the wide array of…read morefood I sampled so it is quite hard to give many positive remarks. The food is decently priced and reasonable given the promotions on Uber Eats and tastes fine, but the enumerated flaws are quite cumbersome and difficult to overlook. (Sushi Burrito: F) - Unfortunately, this burrito fell through not only in standards but physically through the wrapping as it was not properly sealed in the first place. While I think the flavors and contents are reasonable, the unwrapped burrito felt like just trying to eat a poke bowl in your hands which does not work. I would not recommend offering a sushi burrito if it cannot be properly wrapped as one. (Spicy Crab Salad: F) - I would not call this a salad but more so sesame seeds, masago dumped on top of some imitation crab. While others have certainly made this work in the past, this dish was just incomplete as its missing both a base (salad, rice, or both works) and some interesting textural contrasts normally found in a salad such as tempura flakes and cucumber. They have all the items to make a better version of this, but the execution whoever designed this menu just either didn't think this through or didn't taste it. (Chicken Potstickers: D) - I was pleasantly surprised by that sweet yuzu ginger dipping sauce that was quite pleasant. I think that sauce works well as a topping, but perhaps as a flavor booster for a salad or poke bowl rather than these dumplings as they are already light to begin with and definitely needs something like a ponzu or wasabi soy to drive the flavor. (Black Tonkotsu Ramen: D) - The main part, the broth of this Tonkotsu actually has some nice pork development that gives the soup a powerful richness. There are some specifics that could be improved such as the color of that pork as it just looks underdeveloped in color, and in turn, flavor. However, the biggest issue is the poor packaging of this , where the broth does not stay in its container, making this quite messy for takeout. I feel that the containers need to be better and perhaps wrapping them in a plastic bag for extra security would be helpful. -- Food: -1 Presentation: -1 Price: E Overall: -2 D Insta/Beli: @amei_eats

Not willing to step foot outside in subzero wind chills, I gave South Street a try and put in an order of takoyaki and black tonkotsu ramen. The takoyaki were crisp and pleasantly chewy, topped of a mound of bonito flakes. The ramen (loaded with chasu pork, bamboo shoots, scallion, bean sprouts, wood ear mushroom, egg, and fish cake in a rich pork broth with butter and black garlic oil) was hearty and immensely satisfying. The noodles were undercooked, though, even after soaking in that delicious broth
