The guy was very considerate and looked at everything, then he called Charles back, who called me, and quoted me $6,500 to replace the entire 250 square foot roof. He kept saying it was 500 square feet, which it definitely is not (he had not seen it in person). I tried to talk through various options with him, but as soon as it became clear I likely wasn't going to spend $6,500 on the spot to replace the entire roof, he became disinterested and eventually hung up on me. I get Charles not wanting to waste time, but the numbers he was throwing at me seemed very large, especially for the situation. He wasn't wiling to talk through things at all unless I was going to commit to thousands of dollars on the spot. Also, after some less rushed research, $6,500 is a very high price for a 250 square foot flat roof. Charles seemed like a nice enough fellow - but I can't help feeling that I narrowly escaped being taken for a very expensive ride because i needed work done quickly - as anyone with a leaking roof likely can relate to!

Therefore, it's hard to give them more than a couple stars since the main value of having a roof is to prevent leaks, which this roof currently does not do. ORIGINAL: In short -- highly recommend. We called C. Johnston after suffering from sporadic leaks in our new apartment for the last 6 months. Charles, his sons, Santiago and the crew did a phenomenal job on a difficult project that involved laying down a new roof and replacing a skylight at our coop in SoHo. Much of the roof was underneath a large deck that had to be moved (and then reassembled) in order to replace the roof. The deck was put back together in great condition, and the new roof has withstood a few storms already with no leaks. The price was fair (Charles specifically made a point to not oversell a more expensive method when it wasn't needed) the communication was clear & frequent, and the team left my place in better condition then when they arrived. FWIW they're also the only roofers we've had that haven't tracked tar anywhere in my apartment. If you're considering a new roof in NYC, you'd be dumb not to call C. Johnston.

Last year they had me pay an additional $1800.00 stating if I do this additional work , for sure the landing will no longer leak. Well they bamboozled me twice alone just on the landing because it still leaks Since February the roof is leaking to the degree the ceiling gave way. Without coming to evaluate they stated its the drain not the roof. They kept making excuse, finally after threats, they came and tar around the drain and fixed the landing. Well they both still continue to leak. I had a plumber/ drain man evaluate and he stated the drain is fine the roof leaked around the drain pipe , he stated one of the pipe was not sealed. The leak had destroyed the plywood around the drain & the apartment is taken in water. I three way the plumber with Alex Stewart and he informed of above. Alex told me he would reach out to his father and get back to me with a plan. I never heard back from him and now it's May. He has not answered calls, text, or emails. So much for the Five year warentee. I have had two other professional roofing company up to evaluate and they have confirmed above. In addition they commented on how they did the entire roof wrong & insist I am going to have more problems. I have reported them to the BBB & soon the NYC licensing and plan to take all kinds of legal action. I have a big headache, complaints from my tenants, leaks and property damage! ! Don't use them!

I have a bulkhead up on my roof and, prior to calling this roofer, I went up myself to inspect it. There was absolutely no visible damage. However, the quote I received back included multiple "areas of repair" and alleged damage that was supposedly extensive and required immediate attention. The issue? This "damage" was non-existent before their visit. James, the person who came to do the inspection, performed both a drone and physical inspection. After his visit, I was shocked to see that several areas he claimed needed repair looked tampered with. I did not have before photos to prove my point, but based on my own prior inspection, I am confident that these so-called problem areas were not there beforehand. It truly feels as though damage was created during the inspection in an attempt to upsell unnecessary work. This is not only unethical but incredibly disappointing.
