The guy was very considerate and looked at everything, then he called Charles back, who called me, and quoted me $6,500 to replace the entire 250 square foot roof. He kept saying it was 500 square feet, which it definitely is not (he had not seen it in person). I tried to talk through various options with him, but as soon as it became clear I likely wasn't going to spend $6,500 on the spot to replace the entire roof, he became disinterested and eventually hung up on me. I get Charles not wanting to waste time, but the numbers he was throwing at me seemed very large, especially for the situation. He wasn't wiling to talk through things at all unless I was going to commit to thousands of dollars on the spot. Also, after some less rushed research, $6,500 is a very high price for a 250 square foot flat roof. Charles seemed like a nice enough fellow - but I can't help feeling that I narrowly escaped being taken for a very expensive ride because i needed work done quickly - as anyone with a leaking roof likely can relate to!

We called C. Johnston after suffering from sporadic leaks in our new apartment for the last 6 months. Charles, his sons, Santiago and the crew did a phenomenal job on a difficult project that involved laying down a new roof and replacing a skylight at our coop in SoHo. Much of the roof was underneath a large deck that had to be moved (and then reassembled) in order to replace the roof. The deck was put back together in great condition, and the new roof has withstood a few storms already with no leaks. The price was fair (Charles specifically made a point to not oversell a more expensive method when it wasn't needed) the communication was clear & frequent, and the team left my place in better condition then when they arrived. FWIW they're also the only roofers we've had that haven't tracked tar anywhere in my apartment. If you're considering a new roof in NYC, you'd be dumb not to call C. Johnston.

Also, I could actually see the work they were doing on my neighbor's house so I decided to hear him out. I've been considering replacing the 28 year old roof for years, since I had started to see shingle damage during storms, but just kept putting it off another year at a time. Tom was a super nice person and didn't in any way pressure me into a sale. He showed me what they were doing to my neighbors roof and I asked him for a quote. Very happy with Tom's offer I agreed to the job. One difference between Hometown Home Improvements offer and other roofers is that Tom didn't ask for any money until the job was complete and I was satisfied. None of the other estimates I had gotten from other roofing companies offered this. They all wanted money before they started. The next day a crew showed up at 8am sharp, stripped the old roof off and reshingled it in one day. New gutters were on by the end of the day and the job was complete by the second morning. Tom also rerouted my back downspout to the front of the house, which is a huge improvement since I had excessive build up of water from the downspout coming off the back of the house into my back yard. His workers were extremely professional and hard working. They tented the back and front of the house and not a single bush had any damage to it. When they finished you would never have known workers were in my yard, it was spotless. They probably had too many jobs scheduled for the same time and from what Alvaro said would be a 3-day job turned into a 5-day job. The extended time would not have been bad if it was for my house, but most times they did not work the full day on my job -- they even went to a neighbor who asked for help and were gone 3+ hours. First day they showed up late, left to go get something, start something else, etc. Old windows taken out and the boss was putting in a piece in one frame I noticed was split so asked if they were going to put a piece of damaged wood back (which he was doing by the way) and then he immediately asked for a new piece. When the job was "completed" and while they were cleaning up, I took a cursory look and paid the final payment. That's where my problems began. The next day, I checked the job in a different light and found botched crack repair on a new windowsill, caulking not done on some of the inside windows and already cracking on some of the new sills and nail sticking out from bottom of one sill. I called the boss, who was probably tired of hearing from me so he sent his worker out who caulked, but did not remove the nail or repair the windowsill. Bottom line here is the boss was supposed to come last Saturday and repair the problems at 9:00 a.m. He didn't call; he didn't come. I called him on Monday. Scheduled to come on 7/24 between 9 and 9:30 a.m. He didn't call; he didn't come. He always answered his phone, but did not today nor did he call me with a reason for again not showing up. The next day I inspected the attic thinking that maybe the solar panels installed two years ago may be the cause. To my surprise and relief the cause was a missing plastic cover that was on the roofs powered exhaust vent. It had blown off during Fridays storm. Luckily my tenant had stored the cover but did know what it was. The vent with the cover on looks like a mushroom. On Sunday, I used Angie 's list to located a Staten Island roofer since my Brooklyn guy had not yet called back and I didn't want to risk another rain storm. The first contractor that called was already talking about replacing the exhaust vent at about $1600 for the job I cut him short since I only wanted a cover replaced. I said this is not looking good . Good bye. About 5 minutes later Marke calls me I got lucky, real lucky in finding a guy that did not try to cheat me. I told him all that was needed was to replace the cover. I texted him the photos of the cover. He stated that he could possibly fix the cover once he takes a look at it. It may be hard to find a replacement. At 10am he arrived at the house with his father. (Once he said that was his father, I knew I had the right guy) He inspected the roof and confirmed he could do a decent repair. He showed me pics of the roof vent. No need to change it. He used metal strips and screws to attach the cover. Then he placed ice/water shield and adhered it to the cover. He took pics again after the repair. The price was very reasonable The honesty was superb The time arrangement could not have been better. I paid cash and he later emailed me an invoice as I had requested. He is a good man who works with his father and since he did not steer me wrong, I decided to give him an excellent review!! I hope you call him if you ever do need a reliable and honest roofer. By the way, my Brooklyn roofer did call me back and confirmed that he would have done the same.
