I am building some chess boards. They needed sanding to level out the surface. I saw on Hughes web site that they have a thickness planer and an industrial sander. The staff there was very helpful. Billy and his colleague let me watch and critique the sanding job. They were very careful and did multiple passes. In 20 minutes, they saved me days of work sanding, and the price was really reasonable. They also have an amazing selection of wood, especially exotics like Padauk and Purple Heart. Hughes Hardwoods is an excellent place to get special purpose or high quality woods when you don't want to gamble getting your wood at Home Depot or Lowes. In my case, I needed top-quality, hard-wood veneered, furniture grade, sanded 4 x 8 panels for a Murphy wall bed I was building. They had multiple hardwood veneered versions to choose from and their prices weren't really that much more than Home Depot, but their quality was A-grade. If you just need wood for a project like a subfloor or dimensional lumber, I wouldn't necessarily go to Hughes, but if you need high quality or specialty wood, this is the place to go. read more

I was actually referred to this place by another yard when they didn't have what I needed. I don't do a ton of work that requires lumber from here but have been in 4-5 times now and have never disappointed by both customer service and pricing. Here is a photo of a butcher block top I just finished using their poplar. I even referred a co worker to this place who does a lot more woodworking than I do and this is now his go to. Mind you he lives in Roseville and drives down, that should say something. Decided to leave a review after reading Michaels review and I have to say, getting upset that you are now being charged for something you should have been charged for the whole time is ridiculous. To preface, up until today, I was a loyal customer of Hughes for over a year and a half - their staff have always been rude and cold but I thought they were the only supplier in town that carried the plywood sheeting I prefer to use, so I tolerated it - until today, Hughes lost me as a loyal customer for good. Every week/two, I've come in and gotten the same 1-3 sheets of plywood and get it cut into 2' squares like clockwork. A few months ago, while walking back to get my sheets cut with one of their employees I deal with regularly asks whether I paid for the cuts, I said no, I didnt know there was a fee & he said, it's because you dont tell us you want it cut until after you pay - for which I said "at this point everyone knows me, I come in weekly, I get the exact same plywood cut the exact same way & no one has ever said anything about it to me" - for which he says, well since your a "frequent flyer" here, we'll keep doing it for you. I thought that was the end of it. I continued coming in regularly getting the same plywood, same cuts as always but then today, I come in and after ringing me up and heading to get my sheet cut (with another older guy who I literally deal with pretty much every time I visit) I noticed an extra $3 cut fee on my invoice and asked, why I was charged for this and he said "you've gotten away with it for a long while now, not any more" Are you kidding me? Gotten away with it? Like I'm a scam artist? I was unaware of the policy and once it was brought to my attention, was told it would be waived since I've been a regular customer to their business. I've been a dedicated customer for too long to be treated like crap like this. Note, if I was getting $150 thick slabs of walnut ripped, I would fully expect a fee, but I don't, I get $12 sheets of 1/8" plywood that take 20secs to cut and to add $3 to the price is a 25% increase to the cost, is the very definition of price gouging and is NOT how you treat a loyal customer. There is a happy ending to this story though! After leaving Hughes, I was disgusted enough to go around searching for a new local retailer and what do you know - I found one :) After speaking with a manager about my experience at Hughes, he said he would happy to have me as a new loyal customer and will waive my cut fees to help with the bad taste of Hughes. I'm now happy to start this new business relationship with a retailer who listens to & knows how to treat their customers. As a business owner myself, one thing I've learned is, good customer service keeps you in business - which is not something Hughes Hardwood even slightly attempts to attain. As a newbie, my experience at this place was ok. I knew what I wanted and they escorted me to the area where the walnut and maple boards i wanted were stored. i paid about $80 for two 8"w x 8ft x 4/4 (one maple and one walnut); the cost included cutting the boards in half. they have a good wood selections and was surprised they have pre-finished plywood too. they also offer planing services too, but no jointing services. read more

I've been a finished carpenter for 40 years and have shopped many lumber shops.some good some bad. Since moving here a number of years ago after retirement I needed some poplar dimensioned for my exacting needs. I called Billy and he took my order over phone @160bf and next day had order ready.i needed some additional material. Good prices. Only shopped there once, but plan to go back. Every time I get a price quoted on the phone, it's a bit lower than Aura down the street. They don't seem to carry as huge of quantities in rough wood, but they have enough for most projects and a good variety of sheet goods. They also seem to carry larger quantities of crown and other mouldings. They broke open a unit of Padauk for me, and I found a beautiful straight grained piece to take home. I'll come back for many more bf if it routes into frames like I hope it will. read more

Yesterday I called Hughes Hardwoods for information and pricing. All I needed was two 4x8 sheets of ¼" Baltic birch plywood, but I was coming from Davis and had to be sure I would find what I needed. 48"-wide plywood would not fit inside my Honda van. I'd bought 5'x5' plywood a few years ago at a different supplier and had myself cut off one side of it with a little 10-inch hand saw. Got a lot of amused looks while I did that. This time I didn't need to worry. Within 6 minutes of entering and after I'd inspected all the dozens of special-wood veneered plywoods, Isaac appeared and asked if I was finding what I'd come for. I'd found the Baltic birch plywood and it was exactly what I needed. Isaac lifted down two sheets and asked me to bring my truck around to the big end door. "Do you offer cutting?" I asked. "I'm driving a van." Yes, I was told; it was $1 a cut but for two cuts he could just throw it in. (I hadn't been looking forward to hand-cutting 192 inches of hardwood.) Isaac measured the rear access of the van and we decided the cuts should remove 8 inches (not the 6" I'd estimated) so the plywood sheets could stand up without jamming against the headliner. The drive to Hughes from Davis is long and trafficky, but I'll be happy to repeat it any time because I know the reception will be quick, friendly, and helpful. read more

This is in response to Michael R. I've been purchasing from Hughes hardwoods for over 10 years with no incident. They have the absolute best customer service of any lumber retailer in the Sacramento valley. They are the only ones that will "come running" when you show up, they're always courteous and friendly. The quality of their materials is typically a grade above their closest competition without exception. If your complaint is that you got away with a service for free for a long time and now you can't, well in my mind you're lucky and need to accept that the "20 seconds" that you say it takes to cut your $12 sheet of material costs them labor, electricity, wear and tear in the machine and not to mention the liability that is present whenever anybody approaches a wood cutting machine like a table saw. I spend about $25,000 a year with hughes and though I have my own equipment am happy to pay for their services if I need them. Michael R, I'm glad you found someone else to help you. Definitely not a huge place, but I would go here before the very close competition. greeted and asked multiple times if I needed help and when I had questions, the staff was responsive and informative. at the time, most of their prices were a lot better than the competition. walnut was over $2 cheaper here! They actually have prices on their racks which was a plus. unlike the competition, you do not need to buy the full length of the board. they will cut off what you need as long as you leave them a 4ft piece. The only reason not a 5 star is size. read more

I was looking for a specific type of wood for an outdoor kitchen window. I am pretty fussy and wanted a particular size. Bill went out of his way to look in the back and bring up all the wood on the forklift in the various sizes. There it was at the bottom. He took the time to remove all the other sizes and bring out the one I wanted. I needed it to fit in my van, and so it didn't scratch the car, he found cardboard and wrapped the wood inside and additionally shrink wrapped it. I was concerned about it marking the dash and seats, so he found towels and extra cardboard so that wouldn't happen. It is hard to find conscientious employees and Bill definitely is one of them. I can't tell you how impressed I was with him and the folks that work there. I would highly recommend this company. read more

Prices are fair, the quality of wood is good. They offer to thickness plane down your wood for you, and delivery. They have a great selection of quality hardwoods and plywood. The level of service is fine, I've always been greeted when I've gone there, and offered assistance pretty quickly. Prices and quality are light years better than the nearby box stores, if you have any projects that people might actually look closely at get your wood here. They also have moulding and trim, hardwood and MDF, certainly much better priced than the box stores. I've not been disappointed with the quality of materials or sevice I've gotten here, try them on your next build. read more

I'm a total novice/rookie/beginner who needed hardwood for a class project (cutting board). My friend and I went to another store but didn't like the selection so we came to Hughes. Travis was helpful right away, directed us to the type of wood we wanted (oak, cherry, walnut) and helped us decipher thickness (not the same as non-hardwood, folks!). We found what we needed and even though we were not using the right lingo, he asked some questions to make sure we got what we actually needed. He made us feel at ease and welcome as newbies, which is not something we found at the other place. Truth be told I was I there for a LONG time doing my calculations and saw staff members interact with customers both in person and over the phone and they were all friendly and helpful.
