Finally a company that puts customer service first! After a horrendous experience at the ORANGE big box store that rhymes with "Nome Repo", I drove home to find out who else in the Sacramento area supplies wood for out outdoor home projects and quickly checked reliable Yelp to put me in a better mood! Yelp directed me to New Home Building Supply (NHBS) a Sacramento mainstay that is 74 years old. I had never heard of this little gem but thanks to all the FIVE STAR reviews I knew if anyone could help me it would be them. The store is well lit and laid out allowing you to quickly find the items you are looking for. Three times I had employees ask me if I needed help locating an item and the one time I did need help Orlando was there to guide me to what I needed for my project! Kudos Orlando, you are the man! The prices are comparable to the orange, nome repo store . I think my entire project may have been $10 more than at The other place BUT, what is your time worth? At the other store I spent 40 minutes digging through a pile of exterior trim boards to locate ones that weren't damaged, had holes or other cut marks. At NHBS all of the lumber was first rate quality, I did not see a single piece of sub-par material. So the 40 minutes I saved is well worth an extra bit for grade a service and the best lumber you will find in the greater Sacramento area! I can't recommend this place enough and you will never find me at the Orange Nome again! read more

I've driven past this place since I was a wee lad and finally stopped by the other day. I needed half a sheet of plywood and needed that cut in half to fit in my car. They were able to accommodate my request. The staff were very friendly and the store has just about everything I could need. My first trip to the place was 3 years ago. They exceeded my quality and expectations then and they did it again. Our fence blew down in January and I finally got a chance to build 7 new sections. I showed them my plans and they suggested what I needed. Wife is the biggest critic and she was blown away by the fence. I needed 2x12 exterior grade pre painted pine fascia. These aren't available at Home Depot or Lowe's. I called New Home and they had them. I've visited 3x and have gotten the routine. If you need lumber you have to know what you want and whether it'll need cutting. You pay up front then go to the yard and give them paperwork. Lumber attendants know they're stuff and work quickly to get your material. They will load for you too. It's a bit of a drive and they're not cheap but their availability and quality can't be beat! read more

I'm so disappointed with NHBS right now got there @3:26pm 4 minutes before they close and they wouldn't let me in and I new exactly what I needed and they are behind the counter so I would've been walking around. 2-double 20amp breakers and one 50 amp. I've been shopping here for over 30 years and to be turned away at the door. I always support local business as I am a business owner as well. You should've at ask if I knew exactly what I needed. Excellent experience working with Home Building Supply. Friendly, helpful crew. True that they may be slightly higher price on some items but competitive on most. They beat the price on most of the other material suppliers. (I ordered some odd sized lumber.) The big win comes from the 'much' higher quality materials than at any box store. Wayne has been our go-to guy for information and special orders. VERY knowledgeable and helpful. Patient with our many questions. Every delivery, so far, has been on to and accurate. I can fix it, but I don't always know what the hell the supplies are called that I need to fix it. No matter, take the thing to New Home and they will help you find its replacement. Like I said, I can measure, but I can't figure linear or board feet, but it doesn't matter. Take the measurements to New Home and they will help you. Don't worry about looking like an idiot, there are many people (and women) wandering the aisles with some house part in their hands looking to match it. Just a little word of wisdom, when you stick your hand in the nail bin, don't put the nails in your mouth or you will have a grease spot on your lips. And the staff will get a kick out of you when you go to the counter to pay with your greasy black lips. Needless to say, this is a full service hardware and lumber store. Skip Home Depot and Lowe's and head to New Home to support your local economy. And they carry RestoreIt Epoxy if you want to restore your windows. read more

It's true what the other reviewers say, that the counter people are no-nonsense, but I have never found them rude. Just don't expect them to have infinite staff available with infinite patience. I treat them well and always get great service. The guys who work the yard are incredibly helpful. Some of my lumber runs have required forklift moving, restacking, and digging deep into the middle of large units of lumber, sometimes even a half hour of work just to get all the different items to fill my truck. These guys not only were glad to work with me on this, they go out of their way to help you get the quality of boards for the work you're doing. For example, I was building a staircase and let the guy know that's why I needed 2x12s (for the stringers). Once I said that I didn't even have to ask him, he jumped right in and started working through the pile with me finding acceptable boards that were perfectly straight with no major knots or splits. There have been many other examples where these guys have gone out of their way to help me get exactly the lumber I need. Try that at the big-box stores where you load it yourself? Actually a lot of the lumber I needed wasn't even available at big-box stores. We all need to keep local hardware and lumber stores in operation. If you take all of your business to the big-box stores, you can expect a future where that's all there is left. read more

Wow...After Visiting Both Big Blue and Big Orange Home Improvement stores.. I had a hard time finding actual 3/4" plywood for some cabinet projects. Both Big Orange and Big Blue only carried .702" (351/500" wtf...) inch plywood at $38.00 for a 4'x8' sheets. New Home Building Supply had exactly 3/4" sheets in 2 grades of plywood for my choosing, at $8.00 less at A grade Plywood. Their shelves looked packed with the typical hardware store items, many looks like from Ace Hardware distributer, which a small Home improvement store would use. I would not hesitate going back, the counter lady wasn't baking me cookies or oozing friendliness, but at least she was a breathing person who knew her stuff and answered all of my questions. Try to do that at Big Orange or Blue, apron workers are always non-existent. read more

My experience here was nothing but positive. It's a beautiful hardware store, with a large selection of almost everything. I went in there looking for something hard to find, and I did not find it. I did find some things I wasn't even after, a couple of nice blank trucker hats, which I love for work, because they keep my head covered, but cool. The two gentlemen working there were both extremely friendly, and helpful. I am someone who finds myself going to Home Depot once a week. This is going to be my first stop from now on, they have more of the items I'm looking for, and the prices are pretty excellent. read more

This is the first review I have ever written as I don't generally have strong enough feelings either way of the spectrum to spend time writing one but I guess there is an exception to every rule. As a consumer, I've seen many different levels of customer service but the lack of customer service and professionalism I received from one specific person at New Home Building Supply was so absurd and unbelievable, that I think it would be a disservice not to warn others. Long story short, Im a project manager and on a recommendation, visited the store to purchase lap siding for one of my jobs. After driving away from the yard with the siding on my car, there was an incident where a couple of the pieces came off my truck on the freeway so i addressed the immediate concern, pulled over and called the store for the sole purpose of understanding why that happened. I've been doing this long enough to know the process of loading materials onto my car and simply wanted the supervisor to tell me their policy and procedure so that I can understand what happened and move on. The response that I received from Wayne, (said manager) left me in disbelief. Not only did he not let me finish my question, he proceeded to accuse me of lying (when i made zero accusations) and became so aggressive I had to take deep breaths to keep myself composed and not get on his level. During the conversation, I had to redirect him multiple times and ask him to stop being so aggressive towards me and simply discuss the topic at hand but he refused to listen and actually became more irate when I asked him to speak to me like a human being. At this point, I realized that this conversation was going nowhere and he may have been triggered or upset with me specifically so I decided it would be best for him to speak to someone else other than me. The owner of our company, who is a very meek guy, took time to call him to clarify the situation and advocate for future customers only to get the same amount of "Wayne rudeness" right off the bat. The same exact thing happened, he became extremely defensive, aggressive, continuously interrupting, refusing to hear him or try to understand what the motive of the call was. I want to make it clear that the low rating has nothing to do with the company but unfortunately the fact that Wayne was hired as a supervisor will lead to a spotty reputation for the company itself. I can personally say neither my company, nor the dozens of private contractors and hundreds of partners we work with, will ever do business with NHBS strictly because of Wayne's association with them. I was in the process of remodeling a bathroom in curtis park, and did not like driving to either big box stores 8 miles away. Looked on yelp and found this place. Not only do they have most of the items needed for home repair and maintenance, its decently priced. They also have a decent lumber yard in the side / back. Now I needed a small sheet of wood, they had a pile of discounted pieces for $1 Not bad given I would of had to purchase a large sheet from a big box store. I would recommend those in the area to shop here first. read more

C. and I found this store through a search for a super high grade of plywood for the eaves of his house. Not many places carry this product- definitely not Lowes or Home Depot. I was delighted to see the old time wood cutting set up in the middle of their lumber yard. Their outdoor workshop has a table saw or two that look like they have been there since the 1950's. The mound of sawdust is a testimony to its continuing operation. I love how the shelving goes up rather than sprawling out. The isles are more narrow than in box stores, which gives me the feeling of being in maze, except that it is easy to get out. I can tell there are lots of interesting odds and ends packed in there and the guys up front likely know how to direct me on how to use them all. read more

One day I thought I would go try a place different other than Lowes or Home Deport. I called to get a price check on a few items and found it cheaper. I decided to try the place out, but walked out empty handed. The lady at at the front counter is freakin rude. I called back another time just so get a price so I can get it matched at Lowes and she answered. She confirmed why I will never buy anything there. So my recommedation is this...get the price from these guys and then have Home Depot or Lowes match it. Don't give them the time of day. read more

My husband has been a customer here for years, we get lumber for our business here. We came this morning to get some fence pickets that we needed for a job. We paid for them and was directed to the place we're they had them by an employee, we started to look for the good ones in the big pile of broken and damaged ones they had and were told by the same employee that weren't allowed to do that, My only mistake was to ask why? He said because you can't it's going to take you a long time, okay but I'm doing the job my self with my son and husband, what's the problem. He continues to tell me that's the policy. I asked him not to put the rest of the lumber I had already paid for because I was not going to take ugly damaged fence pickets and install them to my customers fence. He laughed and said okay! I go to the office and asked them to please get me a refund since I can't pick my good lumber I wanted my money back. I said I come here because I rather give my money to you than Home Depot. He said I understand that. Now the employee that was helping outside in the yard comes in and tells me that that he can call the owner if he wants and he going to tell me the same thing. Taking of his working gloves and slammed them on the desk! Am I supposed to be afraid?? He calls someone and no one picks up. He tells me again the policy says I can't pick my own fence pickets because that is the policy, I asked him to show me a written policy and he tells me there's none! I grew up here in this neighborhood, I worked in this neighborhood so of course I want to buy from local small and family owned businesses. He walks away mumbling something and I get my refund by the other employee that was there. I know my $441 are not going to damage your budget but at least teach your employees the right customer service. read more

We recently added a handicap accessible ramp to my grandparents home. In a matter of a week we had gone from them not needing it to getting the permit, drawing up the plan, and breaking ground. It was a very quick expense to have happen with little planning out. On behalf of our entire family, thank you for generously discounting the products we purchased from you. We went to another more Orange store prior to coming to you and they were nowhere near as helpful, knowledgeable, and willing to help. If you like to shop in stores with dark narrow and cluttered aisles, then this is for you. No...prices are NOT cheaper here. It's higher than the box stores. The lumber yard is even worse. Everything is scattered among several buildings, with no sense of organization. There are no price tags on anything. Help is never available. No carts for transport. And NO...they do not have everything as they claim. Their selection is a lot skimpier than the box stores. I honestly don't know how a retailer like this can compete and stay in business. read more

This is one of the last neighborhood Lumber Yard/Hardware stores in Sacramento and it's a keeper! Yeah i do Lowe's and Home Depot for very large orders because truthfully you pay a little bit more at the local store but the convenience is worth it. They have a great cross selection of of basic household, garden and hardware items and then some other hard to find tools and building supplies. The staff is super knowledgeable and no nonsense; maybe not outgoing but helpful. check em out. buy some overalls, a straw hat or get a bag of nails paid by the lb. read more

If only I had found this place years ago. Don't be deceived by the name, they are great for older homes. My house was built in '41 and I needed to replace just a few floor boards. Everywhere else they didn't carry solid wood, oak floors. If they did, you'd have to order a bundle that would be $130 plus tax. I only needed a handful, if that. Not only did they have exactly what I needed, but it was in stock and the help was great! I walked out of there $17 later happy as a clam. read more

Boy, does this place need some new reviews. I stopped by yesterday (30/08/2015), I had been on the hunt for a specific size of lumber (2" x 24" x 96"), while they didn't have that in lumber they did have it in a high grade plywood, very reasonably priced. It was cheaper than I would have paid at Home Depot or Lowes. The service - these guys are very nice, very helpful and all around top notch. They also provided ideas on completing my project without any hint of sexism (you'd be surprised!). It isn't as big as Home Depot but it has damn near anything a home DIY enthusiast can use. I can't wait to come back when my next project starts. read more

I had a damage solid wood door which I had to replace. Went to the box supplies stores and I was told they no longer make solid core interior doors. The design was quite different than the old one and that it would take up to 3 weeks to get it. Then it dawned on me to check NHBS. Not only did they had the exact "Hollywood" door style in stock but it cost less than what the box stores prices. Go to NHBS!!! =) read more

I am a licensed contractor for over 20 years in Sacramento, so I have shopped at just about every lumber yard and hardware store in the area. New Home is my go to yard. No matter if the job is in midtown, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove or right around the corner, I'll make the drive to New Home for lumber. The quality of lumber is just better. As others have mentioned, if you need something for a special project, just tell them and they will help select suitable pieces that will make your work easier and the project look better. The good staff in the yard help you load and you don't have to waste energy loading and unloading lumber carts. The pricing is fair and they stock an amazing amount of specialty stock orange and blue stores don't even know exist! read more

Great prices on things especially on lumber. Much better pricing than any big box store. It's local and not a lame chain store therefore they get my business. The "service" (at least inside of the store) has a lot to be desired though. The old timers that run this place are pretty gruff and matter of fact. Don't expect any smiles or any kind of welcoming vibes here. It's a your-on-your-own kind of place if you are trying to find anything, but what they lack in service skills, they make up for with good prices. This is the place for stuff for older homes that they just dont sell at Home Depot. I remodeled my older house (1937) myself and used New Home alot. And then recently had an 1100 sf addition, and contractors purchased majority of materials at New Home... almost nothing at the big box stores. You wouldnt think it would be the case with an independent, but realize that New Home prices are often cheaper than big box store on lots of standard construction materials. For example I just bought 500 ft of MDF baseboard, it was almost half the price of Home Depot / Lowes, and 20% less than Mr Molding. read more
