Haven't been bowling yet, but just chatted to 2 wonderful people…read more Here is a run down. 30$ (plus tax) for one lane, one hour. Shoes are an extra 3$ per person. Also, you have to drive down the ramp and go in back of no frills/Dollarama.

A great time was had by all! (Well, actually, I don't know…read morethat for a fact. I had a great time and everyone else gave the appearance of having a great time. I suppose they could have been acting; merely pretending to have a good time. But why would they do that? They're not sociopaths... or are they? No, probably not. So let's assume they weren't putting on a show and that... A great time was had by all!) I've been to Bowlarama a few times before. I even had a great birthday party here once so I have fond memories. The facilities have been not only maintained but improved since then. Beyond being kept clean, it looks like they've updated a lot of features such as the flooring. They also use bright primary colours along the walls and pillars of the lanes. It's done in a way that serious bowlers (a club to which I'll never be invited to join) won't be distracted but it makes for a nice visual plateau (Yeah - I used 'visual plateau' when describing a bowling alley, deal with it.). The staff were quite friendly and easy to chat with. They seemed happy, which is pretty important for staff to be friendly, I find. The actual bowling? Well, let's say I'm glad that we all agreed not to be competitive at the beginning. The focus was on having fun. Which, considering I never broke 80, was just fine by me! And it was fun! I hadn't bowled in years but I didn't care; the company was good and the atmosphere was light. The free Yelp swag didn't hurt either. I eagerly await the next CMYE!

Charlie's is a pretty chill place to go hang out and have a few beers…read more The crowd can be a little rough around the edges but I guess the university throngs have pretty much pushed the average drinking man out of every other bar in Halifax. Pool tables are a nice addition... I wasn't really sure what the $2 cover was going towards besides upkeep? A grungy/funky spot in the North End that's for sure!

This is not a tourist bar, unless you are a linoleum architecture tourist, or a $2.75 tequila shot…read moretourist, or a tourist of watching tight knit groups of locals sit around in circular formation. Charlie's is where you go when you want to go to Cheers. (Not the Cheers on Grafton St., the Cheers on TV according to your 6 y/o mind, which is really just the the theme song, fuzzy visuals, and conflating real life people with Cliff and/or Rhea Pearlman.) In short, it's where you go when you come home nostalgic and want to see all your old friends, enthusiastically buy each other drinks like it's a genuine gift, dance to one of those weird new electric blue jukeboxes, shout and pontificate around a pool table, and generally have a back slappin, squeezey hugging, chortling little time. The decor is like any affordable house, only the door has a key code and a woman sits at a table with a guest book when you come in. This does not make you feel cool, but it does make you feel like life is funny. The bartender is so used to over-friendly drunk patrons that nothing can melt him. I imagine that deep in his core is something more kind than anything I have ever known, but it is too precious to be shared. The last time I came here, someone apologized for asking me to dance when I turned him down. Apologized. For my rejecting him. A dark little mineshaft to the salt of the earth this place is, lemme tell ya.

Any time bowling is suggested as a fun group activity, I can't help but grumble and shake my head…read more I've accrued far too much experience in seedy bowling alleys reminiscent of 1982 and have since become bitter. With that being said, I was pleasantly surprised by Bowlarama's offerings. Pros: - Lots and lots of lanes. One half of the alley was closed for repairs/renovations at the time of our visit, but it wasn't busy and therefore didn't matter. - Flat-screen TVs at the head of each lane playing classic old-school music. - Friendly staff. - Clean washrooms. - A bar and games area in the back (I didn't venture into either). - Lots of arcade games. - Neat black light and disco ball-like lighting. - Very reasonable pricing, which meant an inexpensive night of fun for our group of 8. Cons: - A herd of wayward youth lounging about in the parking lot. They eventually left, but they made us feel a bit uneasy. All in all, a great experience. I will grumble significantly less the next time someone suggests bowling...as long as we're going to Bowlarama.

By far the better bowling alley in Dartmouth…read more It has 18 lanes, so there's plenty of fun to go around. The walls are painted with great street-art inspired graffiti. Flat-screens are above each lane, set to sports or music channels so you have something to focus on between strikes. It has a large arcade room, complete with an air hockey table and dozens of video arcades. It also boasts a decent pub kitchen, with select fried grub, pop, beer, and chips; everything you need to keep your strength to bowl over your competition! They're very accomodating for parties if you call ahead, even allowing to stay a bit past close so you can finish up your string. Cosmic bowling is on weekends starting at 9, so make sure you're wearing the bright clothes you need to blind your opponents. If you're looking for a fun time with friends that won't break the bank, hit up the Bowlarama. You won't be disappointed.
