We used Hugo's Gardening for quite a few years to mow our lawn. Mr. Luna (Hugo) would when we would run into them while they were working, ask, "How are things? Any issues?" Almost always I said things were fine, but the one or two times I actually had something I hoped they could address, instead of being gracious about it (and seeing it as a potential opportunity to make some additional revenue), he would get irritated and defensive. After the first few years we never saw Hugo himself any more. His wife and son or other crew members would do the work every week. I asked Ms. Luna about him and she said he hurt his back. Never saw him in person again. All these years we retained their mowing services, they never once: - Suggested any steps or treatment we could take to improve the care and appearance of the lawn. - Never suggested or offered (even for an additional fee), to fertilize; aerate; thatch; overseed; treat for insects; treat for invasive weeds; adjust, fine tune, add to or improve, or even repair broken sprinklers. Not once. And no, I never discouraged or would have discouraged this. I would have been thrilled if they offered and more than happy to pay extra to have them do any of these things. They are the supposed experts after all. But given Hugo's past reactions I never explicitly asked. Sometime in late 2022 or early 2023 we began to notice that they were not coming every week. Now sometimes things happen, and knowing about Hugo's (supposed) health issue, and the fact that his wife does all the actual work - at least for us - we didn't make an issue of this. Missing a week now and then and the lawn getting a bit shaggy is not the end of the world. But things did not return to normal as we thought they would. Still, we let it go. Maybe they're having hard times. Still driving pretty new trucks though. Their attendance slipped to showing up at most every second and often every third week. But we're still paying for weekly service. No explanation. No reaching out in any way. Finally after a year of this - paying for weekly services but getting 1/4th of that, I asked Ms. Luna what was going on. She immediately calls Hugo and hands me the phone. His first words are, "What are you paying?" I answer. "When have we ever raised our rates?" Once. Then he starts in on this tirade about how unfair that is - and literally would not let me get a word in at all, shouting over me every time I tried until I finally got angry and started shouting back. Just to be clear: I *never* gave them any reason to assume I wouldn't be willing to tolerate a rate increase - AND THEY NEVER ASKED (or informed). I mean seriously, am I supposed to make Hugo's business decisions for him? I am well aware of increasing costs and actually was surprised all this time that they hadn't raised their rates. Stopping providing service 75% of the time while still charging the full amount may be in Hugo's mind a form of rate increase, but it is cowardly and dishonest. It is stealing really. Hugo and his team are some of the kindest and helpful people i have ever met, we needed a ton of work on our front yard.begining with sprinkler system, new grass, drainage,mulch,rocks pretty much a total layout transformation. DO NOT hire this man! I have banned him from my property. He installed a fence for my next door neighbor. I allowed him access to my driveway so that he could work from my side. This man took over without regard, permission or even notifying me of what he decided to do to my property. He opened and entered my garage to plug in his tools. His truck is very large so he chopped all of my jade bushes lining the driveway in half. He then filled my green container up to the brim with the heavy limbs. He became very angry when I confronted him and yelled that he was leaving the container for me to take to the curb because it was too heavy for me. I definitely recommend Hugo's Gardening for your landscaping needs. I've been looking for the right person to do my backyard for years. In the rainy seasons, I'd have a bad flood problem out back. I inherited my parent's home and there used to be grass out back and later a porch. Today, it was just dirt and left over concrete supports. I passed on many estimates looking for the right company. When I met Hugo, something clicked. He was very knowledgeable about his field, but also understood I wanted to save my mother's Rose Bushes for sentimental reasons. I passed on other estimates cause something felt right with him. I had a vision and he carried it out. But having been abused by so many contractors in the past, what really impressed me was seeing Hugo knee deep doing all the jack hammering, trenching for the new drainage and all the landscaping. So many times I've met with contractors and told them a job only to have another crew do the work differently. That disconnect was why I hated dealing with contractors. Not Hugo. That's what it was that clicked! I believe and admire hard work. He was there every day doing the work and my backyard is exactly what I wanted thanks to him! I had hired Hugo's Gardening to tear out my entire front yard. Later were were to talk about the doing the landscaping. They cleaned up nicely after the first day. They finished late in the afternoon after tearing everything out and asked for a check right away. In the morning when I looked at the job I found to big problems with the concrete work at the house and stucco on the house. One 4 X 5 foot pad was completely cracked from removing roots and the pillar in the front of the house was cracked the entire width of the pillar. When talking with him about the damage all he did was tell me over and over again about what an honest man he was and that he and his men did not do the damage. But after a discussion with his daughter and him we decided to split the cost of the repair and shook hands. But he has now ignored my e-mails and calls and he is not welcome to finish the job. I hired Hugo to service my rental houses! He starts out good and tells you exactly what you want to hear. He is good for about a month. And that's it! He doesn't show up! Language barrier. Very bad language problem. He doesn't understand English. I used him for a few months and had to let him go. He started not showing up, then lied about the situation and told me he "THRUSTS" his people! Do not use! He's a scammer! He's NOT a Gardner. He can't speak or understand English. I hired Hugo about at the end of November, because I wanted a gardener who would do more than mow, edge, and blow. I wanted someone who would recognize issues and take care of them (i.e. weeds, clover in the grass, etc.) Hugo emphasized that that's how his service was different from others. So I hired him for double what I was paying my last gardener (after all - he was going to provide superior service). The first two weeks, Hugo and his crew did a fine job. Then, on the third week nobody showed up on the weekday that we agreed upon. I texted Hugo (at around 3:30 PM) to see if he was coming. He replied about 4:30 PM that he would come tomorrow. The next day, nobody showed up. Then the next day, two of his crew showed up, they stayed about 10-15 mins, did almost nothing, and left. The fourth week, two people showed up, did a "mow, blow and go". On the fifth week, Hugo showed up with a member of his crew. I wanted to show Hugo some issues that I thought needed attention. Hugo became upset, claimed that I shouldn't complain because he didn't charge me a "set-up" fee. I stated that his service was fine the first two weeks, but that the last two weeks weren't as he promised. He walked away got in his truck and left. Hugo promised alot, started out great, but within a short time his service wasn't living up to his promises. read more

Hugo's Gardening came into our lives just after my husband had a stroke. Hugo has been nothing short of amazing and caring. He's made our yard look beautiful and he continues to improve on it. He's done everything I've ever asked. Finding someone to maintain your yard is fairly easy, but finding someone with Hugo's work ethic is challenging. He takes great pride in his work. We hired Hugo and his team to completely renovate our back yard. When they arrived we had severely overgrown trees, shrubs and weeds. His team did a great job not only cutting them back but doing it in a way that has made them come back even stronger. Hugo has a strong understanding of gardening and landscape design and has a genuine love of the craft. He was able to speak to each type of tree/plant and how it should grow and look. Once all of the debris was removed and cleared, we had him install new sod and irrigation. While his service may not be the cheapest, the quality is what you would expect and he stands by his work. Once our grass began to grow, we noticed some spots they weren't getting enough water. Hugo and his team came down that day and replaced a section of lawn and made some adjustments to the sprinklers and timer. Hugo also made some great recommendations that ultimately made things even better. We felt the work they did was well worth the price. I hired him to do some landscaping. Hugo started out good the first week, showed up as scheduled with several workers. Paid him a large amount for his services and he did a good job, Then the next week, he never showed up as promised to finish the job. I would call him and I would get the runaround, never sets a schedule for work. Shows up whenever he wants to and complains about being tired and doing so much work. He tries to do everything himself and takes on more than he can handle and promises services he cannot perform. I wasted 4 weeks going back and forth with him and I still don't have grass or my sprinklers fixed. He hates being pressured to finish jobs and tries to juggle multiple jobs by himself. He compensates by bringing food to you. He's a nice man and very sensitive. He likes to be complemented on his work. It got even weirder when I would call him to ask when he's coming to finish the job and he stated, the work is becoming too much and my wife thinks I'm having an affair. This was so unprofessional and insulting, I told him I cannot work with his inconsistent schedule and let him go. I wouldn't hire if you have a big project because he cannot do it. read more

Hugo was very knowledgeable on many different aspects when it comes to landscaping and design. However, I need someone that can go step by step with me. Landscaping can be very expensive and I need someone who is okay with me just calling them over for part A, then 3 months later calling them over for part B, and etc. Hugo seemed to be "big picture" oriented and wanted to be hired for A through F on the spot. He'll tell you all day long how he doesn't want you to overspend on little things which is great, but he also seems uninterested in small projects. He has great ideas but can switch from being really nice to rude and pushy when he starts getting frustrated. For these reasons, I wound up choosing someone else with similar pricing who was nicer and could take things at a slower pace. read more

Strange. I asked Hugo when he arrived for TWO quotes: the FIRST to install sprinklers on a 1,500 sq foot front slope - the SECOND to remove the existing ivy on the same slope and to amend the soil. When I mentioned that I could arrange for the new soil delivery, the meeting took a turn. That last part had upset him - he mentioned something about me "wasting his time" - and "I've been in business 30 years...If you're getting your own materials, I'm just going to get confused." My own materials? I mentioned one load of soil but OK. He's a business man and needs to make a profit where he can. But the tone of the meeting was so crappy at this point I just waived off - what about the rest of the quote? The real reason I asked for him was for sprinkler installation anyway. And possibly remove the ivy. Tthe add-on about the amended soil was my mistake - and he apologized at the end for his "bad english" - but this was a bad start to my day :/ read more
