My wife and I have a new-build that required additional landscaping of our backyard. We eventually decided to go with California Outdoor Living after reading all their positive reviews on yelp. In addition their quote was very competitive if not the best when looking at other contractors. We already had a design in mind for JC which made the process very quick. Although there was some misunderstanding with the design and drains throughout the process, JC was always responsive with his texts and quick to make adjustments. The moment we got our design approved by our HOA, the construction happened VERY FAST. We emailed California Outdoor living on a Wednesday evening of our approval. The very next day (Thursday), JC arrived to go over the outline. I do appreciate how fast things were done, but it was almost to a fault at times. They were ready to go by the next day but my wife and I didn't feel like we had discussed the plan and execution thoroughly enough. On Friday the construction workers were already digging out our backyard. They spoke only Spanish so communication was very difficult to ensure if our plan was executed appropriately. By Saturday all of the pavers were laid out. Construction was incredibly fast but because of that some details were lost in translation. We discussed with JC that we wanted an 11x14 ft paver island. However the final dimensions was 12.5 x 12.5 feet. We also wanted all the walls of our backyard to be lined with turf. However the paver border ran too close to one of the walls, that putting turf did not make sense. They only left 1 inch between the wall and the paver (see attached image). We appreciate how fast the work was done. The overall work was great BUT not exactly what we wanted. We felt rushed with the whole construction process. However everything was done in less than a week which was incredible! In addition, once the turf was laid out JC noted that window reflections from both our neighbors and our own windows would cause damage to the turf. He informed us this can happen sometimes. Going back to rushing things and not being thorough, we wished JC took the time to look at our backyard and factor in this possibility. If we had known the reflections could damage this area we would have changed our turf design. At the end of the day they are just executing our design, but it's these minor things that left us feeling like our backyard could have been better. However we are still very thrilled with the overall speed and communication done throughout the process! Would still recommend this company. But these small critiques are definitely something to keep in mind for future clients.

The drainage tube was installed with the slope going the wrong direction, and the walls were not properly covered before the concrete was poured, leaving concrete splatter all over the side walls. The concrete also cracked less than three days after it was poured. It was poured on Monday morning, and on Wednesday the artificial turf guy was using a large plate compactor right next to the two-day-old concrete. I believe the vibration from that equipment contributed to the cracking. When I spoke with JC about the issue, he told me that concrete will crack sooner or later and that is why they do not warranty cracks. Concrete was poured directly on top of the soil, no gravel was brought first. While I understand that concrete can crack over time, I did not expect it to crack before I had even made my final payment. Despite my disappointment, I paid the remaining balance. After that, I never received any follow-up confirmation that the payment was received , or even a simple thank you.

After going through the process ourselves, I can absolutely see why they spoke so highly of the company. From the beginning, Byron made the design and estimating process feel very clear and professional. One thing I really appreciated was that he used an iPad on-site to draw out the design, calculate measurements, and price everything very accurately. It was not a vague "ballpark estimate" type of process -- it felt transparent, exact, and easy to visualize, which gave us a lot of confidence moving forward. This location here is where you actually purchase and pick up the supplies. We were able to find everything we needed for our projects at Thompson. We made several trips; scoops of base and sand, sacks of material, and pallets of pavers. Fairly quick to get everything too, not a long wait ever, if any. The staff at this materials location is definitely not as friendly or helpful as the Design location, but then they aren't trying to get your business, at this point they already have it. The people at the counter are still nice enough and fairly helpful, depending on who you talk to. The workers in the back getting the scoops and pallets are quick and get the job done fast, they are the backbone! Pricing is great! And took hardly any time to get what we needed. Keep in mind you have to actually look at the designs and decide what you want at the Design location then order and pay for your items at this location, so that's where it got slightly confusing. And maybe because on our first trip there, the computers were down, so things were a bit amiss. However, if just getting scoops or non-design items then you can go directly to this location to get that type of material. See? It's a bit confusing, but you'll catch on. If we can, anyone can! If I could give Caliscapes OC more than 5 stars, I absolutely would. Our landscaping project was the final phase of a much larger home transformation. After removing our swimming pool and building an ADU that now serves as my home office and gym, we wanted to redesign the entire yard into a peaceful Mediterranean style retreat. We also wanted to replace our old metal fencing with masonry walls to help reduce the noise from our busy street and neighboring homes. Oscar was the first person who came to assess our project, and from the very beginning we were impressed. He was incredibly patient and took the time to understand every detail of what we liked and what we hoped to achieve. In less than a week, he designed our entire yard and presented us with a beautiful 3D rendering, complete with the color palette, so we could visualize exactly what the finished landscape would look like. After that, Oscar and Victor met with us to review every detail of the project. They discussed the hardscape, explained what would work well, suggested adjustments where appropriate, and made sure we were completely comfortable with the final plan before construction began. The crew started the very next day. I've honestly never seen such a professional operation. My husband has an architectural background and has spent many years in the construction industry, and even he commented on how organized, efficient, and professional the entire team was. During the first couple of days, when the old concrete was being demolished and the site was being prepared, there were several large specialty trucks working in our cul-de-sac. Even with such a large operation, the crew was always considerate of our neighbors. If anyone needed to get through, they immediately moved their vehicles without hesitation. One thing that especially impressed us was Victor's management. He taped the project blueprint onto the wall of our ADU so every member of the crew could see exactly what needed to be done. Every phase of the project was completed systematically, and everyone always seemed to know exactly what their responsibilities were. It was obvious that this was a very well managed team. Ours was a fairly large project, yet the entire landscaping was completed in just a little over two weeks. Every morning the crew arrived promptly around 8:00 a.m. and worked until about 4:30 p.m. At the end of every day, they didn't just clean our yard--they also swept the sidewalks and even the street so everything was spotless before they left. I consider myself a perfectionist, so I naturally notice the smallest details. To my surprise, I honestly think Victor's team outdid me. Every concrete line, every planting, every finish, every transition between materials--everything was completed with incredible precision. Their attention to detail exceeded our expectations. The quality isn't just what you can see. According to my husband, the grading, drainage, irrigation, and underlying construction were done just as carefully as the visible landscaping. They even installed three separate irrigation systems for the different planting areas so each zone receives the appropriate amount of water. That level of planning and craftsmanship is impressive. Although Oscar's 3D rendering was already beautiful, the finished project somehow turned out even better. What used to be an ordinary backyard has become a peaceful Mediterranean retreat. The new walls noticeably soften the surrounding noise, and every morning when I open the curtains in my office and look outside, I still can't help but smile. Sitting in our courtyard with the gentle breeze and the soft sound of our wind chime has become one of my favorite parts of the day. We honestly feel like we've brought a little piece of a luxury resort into our own home. When we were initially comparing contractors, we found Caliscapes' pricing to be very reasonable. Looking back now, considering the quality of the workmanship and knowing that so much of what makes a landscape last is hidden beneath the surface, I honestly don't know how they deliver this level of quality at their price. Perhaps the greatest compliment we can give is this: when the project was finished, we were actually a little sad to see the crew leave. Caliscapes OC completely redid our front and back yards two years ago. We wanted to reduce water usage, lower maintenance, a flowery cottage garden appearance in the front and a small amount of grass in the back. We requested a fire pit, an area for a greenhouse, a DG driveway and three new trees. We had the same wonderful experience as seen in all the other reviews for Caliscapes. A year and a half in we decided that the DG driveway was not working for us, due to a slight slope and a rainier than usual winter. We contacted Victor and he recommended a small rock material for the driveway. At the same time Victor offered to do some refreshing maintenance on the rest of our DG, flower bed mulch, plants (we do our own gardening) and even fertilization. Oscar also came out while the work was being done, to assess the health and condition of the plants he had selected for us the year prior, and to ask if we had any questions. Fast forward another few months. The new driveway material is working out beautifully. We recently noticed some excess water in a flower bed. Again, we do not have a gardener, so we asked Victor's advice. He came out the same day, and sorted things out for us. We appreciate the fact that Victor is responsive and willing to help us with any concerns we have regarding maintaining our initial investment in landscaping. Once you hire Caliscapes for your landscape remodeling needs, you will not need to look any further for anyone else. Victor and Oscar are a great team and so easy to talk to and deal with. They return calls immediately and that is so important. I did my remodel in two stages. First they completely re-landscaped my front beds. They looked so amazing that I decided to redo both my front and back yard lawns. What a difference it made to the look of my whole house. And then when all the new lighting was installed, it was perfect! Oscar lets you know exact start dates for the project and Victor and his crew show up exactly on time. We were in the middle of a heatwave and they worked so hard! Before they left everyday, everything was hosed down and clean. We all know that doesn't always happen. We hired Caliscapes OC to prune our trees. We asked if they did landscape lighting as well and Victor said yes. He gave us a proposal for the pruning and for the cost of a lighting design and its installation. He and his crew came on the day they said. In one day the trees and bushes were pruned beautifully. Then it rained and we had to wait a few days until the lighting could be installed. But he and his crew finished the project in the time he anticipated. They cleaned the dirt from the driveway, walkways, and street. The lighting of the front yard is gorgeous - the trees are highlighted and the walkways are lit so that it is safe to walk when the sun sets. The backyard is unbelievable! All of the trees are lit from underneath so that the leaves and branches shimmer in the light. The walkways are softly lit so that one can navigate all of the paths in the backyard. We hired CaliscapesOC to demo our backyard and create a usable space to relax, entertain and for our toddler to safely play in. The entire process was extremely professional and thorough. Oscar helped us understand the process, costs and details needed to complete our project and answered dozens of questions as we came to a final project agreement. Once we finalized the project plan, Victor and his team got to work on schedule and was able to complete the project in just 20 days! His team was extremely efficient, showed up every single day and even resolved a few unexpected plumbing issues we discovered on our 30yr + property. We landscaped our back and front yards with Caliscapes, including design, plantings, irrigation and lighting. Oscar was amazing. He has a terrific fund of knowledge about plants and he is friendly and easy to talk to. He accommodated all our questions and design changes with ease. Victor was fantastic. He personally managed all of the construction details, overseeing staff and as well irrigation, plant and lighting placement. He found problems with previous construction work and easily repaired these issues. He assured that all of the work was completed on time and to the highest of standards. His crew worked well together. They were polite and worked efficiently. Everyday they picked up after themselves and left our yard clean and safe. The final product looks great and we are so happy that we chose Caliscapes for this job. read more

Caliscapes transformed our backyard. Our home was new construction and our backyard was basically just a field of uneven dirt when we moved in. Now we have a beautiful lawn, new irrigation, a small fruit tree orchard, a rose garden, and great sections of natural stone that break up the space really nicely. Oscar, who did our initial consultation knocked it our of the park. I had several landscapers submit bids and was the only one who truly consulted on the design and added a lot of ideas I hadn't thought of. Originally I was just going to do grass everywhere but Oscar helped me realize we could do a lot more with the space. Victor and team did an excellent job getting everything installed and I could not be happier with the final outcome! read more

Caliscapes OC did an okay job with my landscaping project. The design was nice, but some details felt rushed. Communication was hit or miss, which made things a bit frustrating at times. Overall, I liked the outcome but expected a bit more polish. Worth considering, but I wouldn't go in with too high of expectations! read more
