This is my second shoe repair through Hugo, I brought in an older pair of HUGO BOSS snake skin leather shoes. They were in rough shape( my own fault, should have brought them in sooner) Hugo was extremely excited when he saw my Italian made, dark brown , leather shoes. The heels were very worn out and beginning to almost crumble . The outer leather was beginning to separate from the sole on one shoe. Hugo said he would order in a leather patch for this part of the project. I brought the shoes in on June 19,2023 - they were ready yesterday, June 29. Total cost with tax $68.25. The shoes have been fully restored to their original condition. Hugo can seem a little rough in his manner ( he's not 21 years old!) but he sure appreciates the chance to work on quality shoes . The shop is in an older building ,looks like a typical shoe repair shop , with the smells of leather and shoe polish greeting you as you enter. Pictures of Columbia adorn the walls. read more

The Owner takes tremendous pride in his craftsmanship. Even when he was advising what repairs were needed you can sense his enthusiasm and high standards. The only demerit is took lot longer to get my shoe repaired. It was good thing I did not need it in a hurry as it was a loooooong wait. Craftsmen such as Hugo need to be supported. I have used Hugo twice and the experience just keeps getting better each time. The first visit was to get new soles and heels put on a pair of hiking boots. The workmanship was excellent and the price more than reasonable. He even refurbished the laces on the boots. Yesterday I picked up my Italian dress shoes that needed new soles and heels. Again a great attention to detail and care in refurbishing the shoes. Hugo ordered Italian replacement materials to match the rest of the shoes. It took a little longer to get the materials but the look is terrific. The amount charged was only $72. And the extra service of polishing the shoes and adding new shoe laces was so 'old school service' but typical of Hugo and very much appreciated. read more

I was so so disappointed with my experience at Hugo's. Instead of going to my usual Leslie's Luggage Repair (love them) I decided to chance it with Hugo's for a purse, because I have never taken a bag to Leslie' and Hugo's is closer to my house. The bag ha two handles starting to come out of their 'sockets' (the best way I can describe it. I took it in and he looked it over and we discussed what could be done. He said he'd have to glue them, which I said was fine, since he said he couldn't go in via the bag lining. He said it would take ten days, but I waited three weeks without hearing anything. I had been busy, but when I finally called he said it would be ready the next day, and he actually ended up calling me the next morning to say it was good to go. I went in and when I saw it my heart broke, the straps had been glued back with incredibly lumpy and shoddy workmanship, then edged over to show less. The strap was also nearly two inches shorter on the "fixed" side. He explained that he had gone in through the lining and the inner pocket was also all pulled out. Lastly, a streak of glue is faintly visible on the side of the bag. The repair was only about $30, but the bag is ruined in my opinion. I'm only going to use it until I find a replacement. More than anything, I just don't know how he could give it back thinking that was satisfactory.. I hate to leave a shit review for a small business, and perhaps he's better with shoes, but I won't be back. read more

This was exactly what I was hoping for. The place has a workshop feel; lots of industrial equipment and the acrid smell of shoe polish and glue. He's got a selection of different materials for re-soling. Usually takes about week to turn around an item. Very friendly guy too. I've had the following done, all to my satisfaction. -re-sole womans leather hiking boots -re-sole high heels -re-real mens leather hiking boots -repair sole womans casual leather boots -shine leather shoes -resole womans casual leather boots I forget how much I paid.. but it's about $10-30 to reseal, and about $30-80 to resole. He does good clean work. Like all shoe repairs, you can't expect a perfect result when you re-sole or re-seal but he does a very good job. Compared to the 2 other cobblers I've been to Hugo is by far the best. I highly recommend you choose Hugo's. read more

This business deserves WAY more than 5 stars! 100+ stars for Hugo's Shoe Repair!!! I rarely write yelp reviews - but Hugo's Shoe Repair went WAY above and beyond my expectations. I'm a critic too, as I'm a garment-leather worker by trade; so if something was done incorrectly with my leather boots, I'm the first person to nitpick a good job. For starters, upon entering his business; I was greeted with a massive smile and the friendliest of greetings in his inviting Columbian accent. You could see the passion for his craft sparkle in his eyes from the moment you stepped through the door. My boots are not easy boots to fix. They're Leather Tabis, which means they have a split-toe sole (the big toe is separate from the other 4 toes), and zippers that go up to mid-calf. Lots of complicated pattern pieces and panels. I previously had 3 different cobblers turn down my boots, saying "It's not possible". I decided eventually to stop asking to get the soles fixed, and just came in to have the zippers replaced. Hugo took one look at my boots and told me how gorgeous they were, and that they just needed a little love. "They'll last you 10 more years after I'm done with them!" he exclaimed. To my surprise, (I never mentioned the soles) he turns them over and asks me if I want those fixed too. "You can fix those?!" "No problem!" At this point, I'm practically in shock. He had them ready exactly on the day that he said they would be, and not only did he fix the soles & zippers, but he strengthened the areas that were sagging, fixed stitching on some of the complicated panels, polished them to the gorgeous shiny black finish they had when I purchased them over 5 years ago, and re-stabalized where the sole meets the boot as well. Extra added bonus? This is a multi-generation business! The old tale of "my father and his father before him owned this shop". Generations of experience can't lie. Hands down best shoe repair available in the Vancouver area (and probably much further!) I've found my cobbler for life. If ever I move to another province or country... Stepped into Hugo's with high-hopes as the Yelp reviews are all stellar, and I was not disappointed. Hugo is an awesome guy, and a very talented leather worker. I went in only to get cleaning product and he proceeded to give me exactly what I was looking for, gave me a quick demo on how to use the product, and even glued the soles of my boots for me without even charging. The man lives and breathes customer service, and exceptional craftsmanship. Very disappointed about this place. I would NOT recommended to anyone. I was returning customer, I cannot remember what kind of fix I got before, but I must have been pleased that I decided to come back. I brought a pair a shoes that were a bit tight, Hugo said he will put them on a couple machines and it will help to make the shoes a bit wider and longer. He told me I had to come back in a week, I thought it was a bit too long, but I really like those shoes and didn't mind waiting. I picked them after a week and when I first try them they felt good, even a bit bigger that I would've wanted. Anyways, I took them home, wear them a few time and they felt great. The are soft leather, so they maybe shirk a tiny bit just to make them fit perfectly from the time I picked them up. After a couple of week, I notice that they were feeling tighter to the point that they almost felt the same way before I brought them to Hugo. So, I decided to go back and ask Hugo if there was any reason why this happened. He said that there was no way that the shoes have shrink and that he didn't believe what I was saying. He said he would try to fix them again but he would have to charge again. I was like what? I already paid for this service!! I asked if he stand by the quality of his work, he responded by saying I should put rubbing alcohol and that might help. Then he went to the back of the store and said that he would not fix them. What really make me upset, is that I am trying to support a local business from people who are from my same background, Hispanic, and they run their business like this. This guy knows shoes! Hugo explained to me how one pair was commercially constructed, with the front including the tip of my pointed stilettos was made too short. As a result, the front tip kept getting damaged. For another pair, the top of my shoe was completely scratched 3-4mm deep and Hugo managed to buff out the scratches so the shoes looked brand new. I waited several weeks to write this review because I wanted to see how the bottom tip of my stilettos fared. Hugo used a much better material than the last guy I went to, and needless to say, my stilettos are still in perfect condition!! read more

I've noticed that many people seem to have very unrealistic expectations of what they're going to get at a shoe repair place. If people want perfection, maybe they could try repairing their shoes themselves rather than imagining that someone can take their broken shoes and make them perfectly new again? Repair always has an element of approximation to it, especially with leather, which is a soft material that always deteriorates over time. Also, you can't get a silk purse from a sow's ear. If you start with mediocre materials in a shoe, getting it repaired won't magically turn it into a premium shoe. Artist don't like working with shoddy materials and as someone who's done sewing repairs myself, a lot of things out there are simply not worth the effort of repairing. I'm happy to say that the repairs I've had done at Hugo's exceeded my expectations considerably. I had a pair of Australian cowboy boots that I almost got rid of because the size I bought was just too tight to wear comfortably. I brought them into Hugo, and he carefully stretched them just the right amount to make them wearable and comfortable. After a brief wearing-in period, normal for any boots, they have now become my most comfortable boots and I've worm them almost every day at work for the last six months. Another project I brought to Hugo was the total reconstruction of two pairs of 1970's Italian rubber platform sandals, which were very badly worn, with straps coming loose and upper completely separating from the sole. He had me come in for two separate fittings and consultations about these shoes that I've loved for many years and we worked together to get them up and walking again. It was an expensive job but very extensive work needed to be done to both pairs. He ensured me that they would be good for many more years of faithful service and after a weekend running around in them in the woods, I believe him. Hugo is sweet guy and a true craftsman. Just don't expect miracles and you won't be disappointed. read more

I went to Hugo's because 1) I needed to get a few things taken care of and 2) because it was close to where I live. The 1st time I went they were closed, which was odd because I arrived 45 minutes before closing time. So I phoned the shop next day and asked until what time they would be open until, and Hugo said "until 5:15" which is hilarious as that was the exact time I showed up the day before. So I made sure to show up extra early that day. To be honest, I was quite skeptical. A kingsway joint where they close early? When I brought my 3 items for repair I immediately was greeted by Hugo, a Colombian man with a heart as big as his smile and experience that is older than I am! Hugo knows how to deal with his customers as well as he repairs shoes. As soon as I presented him with my problems my skepticism turned to confidence. This man spent over a decade working for a famous shoe company back in his home country before taking his experience over here. I had a pair of Kenneth Cole New Yorks that had the sole worn through. I needed them resoled in 3 days so I could wear them to a wedding. I was assured that they would done in time and with impressive results. And I have to say, beyond the great job he did with the buttons on my shirt and the zipper on my luggage case my shoes looked phenomenal! For such unique soles as my shoes had I couldn't believe how close he was to the original design. On top of that the soles were now more slip-proof and the leather polished to perfection. Hugo is the ideal face of a "mom and pop shop". He gives you a personal guarantee of satisfaction that no chain store could ever give you. When you see him the next time he knows who you are. He has amazing stories to tell if you ask him. He is the reason why neighborhoods still exist. I took in a pair of Clarks Desert Boots (Beeswax) to get resoled after a year and a half of hard use and no treatment. I came in and showed them to him. I told him I wanted a crepe sole and I had to pay him $90 (cash only btw). A couple weeks later he told me that the company he uses to order material no longer carried crepe so I chose another Vibram sole. Two weeks later I come to pick them up and I was ready to drill him for taking a month and charging me $90 for something that wouldn't cost as much but before I could do that he refunded $20 and explained that he waterproofed them, oiled them, double-stitched, pressed out creases and replaced parts of the shoe. It was worth the wait. I don't think he would normally take 4 weeks for a repair as the soles I requested had to be delivered. Excellent. Hugo is a man who is passionate about his work and actually cares for his customers, he is an expert and knows his craft well. I was looking to repair 2 pairs of shoes that I wasn't sure could be repaired. I was a bit skeptical at first when the owner was explaining what he would do - a total overhaul of the heel and sole. Beware! I was looking around for a shoe repair for my knee high boots. They go over the knee with lace up at the top. They were too big so I brought them in to be slimmed down at the calf. I went onto Yelp and read his reviews (seemed decent and well reviewed). Hugo was nice when I brought them in- he asked how I found his store and I said off the reviews from Yelp. I pre paid for the shoes - 3 weeks time went by and no phone call to confirm they were done. I called and he told me he thought I didn't need them right away because of the bad weather and he determined I was not wearing them because it's cold. He said he will work on them now. (Since when does priority depend on weather ). I just picked up my shoes - not only were they poorly sewn (stitching is not tight) but the laces are missing! He had sewn up the top without the laces, so they're not the original style. When I asked him about that - he shrugged and said I don't remember - you asked for them that way. I told him to give me the original laces so I can bring them somewhere else and have them probably repaired . No apologies, no questions asked . He threw some laces he had hung up and moved onto talking to some friends who had stopped by. My shoes are the Stewart Weizman lowlands. I should have brought them to the actual store or go find a shoe repair more reputable but I wanted to give the small businesses closer to home a chance . Guess I learned my lesson . Hugo is very welcoming and friendly. I got him to put grip on the bottom of a pair of sandals the first time I went there. He said they would be ready in a few days. I mentioned i was sort of hoping to wear them that night and he said no problem, ready at 5pm. I went back the same day at 5pm and asked if I was too early and he said no problem, they've been ready since yesterday. The next time I went I had a pair of knock off Doc Martens who's soles were just glued on so kept coming off. I had taken them to a place on Main st and the man in charge there had insisted I throw them out and get new shoes. I thought this was a waste as I like the shape of these ones and the tops were good leather. We ended up throwing the bottoms of the shoes away and Hugo ordered in brand new soles from Italy, thin ones, and after a few weeks he turned these shoes into the elfin boots of my dreams. Hugo is a magician that truly loves what he does from work. No matter how out of the way his shop is I will never go to another cobbler. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! Worst job ever! It was the worst experience ever..... I had taken my executive "Cavalinho" messenger handbag just to reinforce the strap ...he looks at it...and says he would do an excellent job......that he's done it before....guarantees I won't notice a thing.... I was so wrong.... ... I paid $25.00.... and when I returned the following week, my bag was destroyed.....the stitches were all uneven.....leather was cut...edges were cut ....the stitches weren't even matching the original stitch which was brown, he had it in white... it was sticky with some kind of product on it...and had black grease on it......like a stain....my bag was BROWN...made the excuse that his machine wasn't strong enough to sew threw the reinforced leather....full of BS It was a disaster.... I picked it up and I DEMANDED my MONEY BACK which I did get..... Never again,will I go there....So I found a new shoe repair shop...charged me $15.00 it was immaculate, he fixed the mess Hugo did... and it was cheaper...and very well done.... read more

To be honest, I was kind of repelled by the past feedback but because this is the only shoe place I heard about through a relative, I decided to give it a go. The heels from my two pairs of boots were wearing out and it was either a chuck them away or get them fixed. Hugo did an amazing job. The heels were study and he polished them (I think) so that they look almost new. He even ordered in a these special heels for my flat-er boots so that they would have good grip for the fall/winter season. The only downside was that it was kinda pricey. It is expensive to hold all the repair stock he could hold if he ran a mass production shop. He is a one-man operation. He orders quality repair materials and repairs shoes well that were never designed to be repaired (our wonderful throw-away society). If you want your shoes repaired yesterday, don't go to Hugo. He is always very busy with a long line of very happy customers. Just plan ahead!! Today is Tuesday and I have a wedding to attend Saturday and not knowing if I had enough time to get my shoes repaired. It was a minor fix of putting a buckle back on so I thought I would take a chance anyway. It was a toss up going to someone local or Hugo's Shoe Repair, so I thought I would call and from the moment I spoke with Hugo the man himself, I packed my shoes and along I went( It was his warm and friendly tone that drove me to see him). When I got to the repair shoe, A big"HELLO" with a Columbian accent behind the rack of shoes and said one moment please, it was literally a moment and not metaphorically said. It was not until he started to carefully look at my shoes and then he started to pull apart the sole of my shoes..OMG! I was terrified and couldn't look as he continued, remember I went in for a simple buckle fix!! He said not to worry and the reason why he inspected it "thoroughly' because he was afraid the shoe would fall apart if i danced, so I said fine, sure do what you need too (he was pointing out all the defects on my shoes as he was going along. Ok so I left it with him, letting him know I need it latest Friday for a wedding Saturday. Wednesday, I get a phone call at 2:00pm ready for pickup..WOW! He said he understands around weddings there are so many things to do that he didn't want my shoes to be a burden. He also pointed out that he pulled the entire sole out for both shoes, glued it, replaced both buckles and I walked out of there paying him $20 plus tax. Even though he did the extra bit, he didn't charge for it. My shoes looked brand new and well mended. Can't wait to show them off at the wedding, I bought these shoes in Poland so there was no way i could replace them but getting them repaired from a super friendly, efficient, confident and a person with 30 years experience it was worth writing a review. Big mistake going here. I took in my Nine West black leather riding boots to have the heels repaired and the heel wear pads replaced. Hugo seemed very knowledgeable and told me these boots were worth repairing. He said he would not touch the grip on the underside of the front of the boot as it was sewn in and of very good quality but would fix the heels. There were some small cracks in the leather, where there is movement, when walking. He said he would put patches on the inside of the boot to prevent further cracking. He told me I would love my boots when I picked them up. He would treat the outside so they looked much better than now. How much? $45.00 A lot of money but he said it would be worth it. I agreed I picked up my boots and the first thing I noticed was they were very streaky, like the polish had not been buffed out. I decided to let that go. He showed me the heels and they looked good. He then told me he replaced the grip on the underside of the boot. as he decided it needed it. It is now a glued piece, not sewn in. WTF?! He then had the audacity to say I could pay him $10 more for doing this............ I was uncomfortable from that point and just wanted to leave. I paid him and left. I got in the car and noticed he had not put the patches inside the boot like he said he would. I called him and asked about it. He said it did not need it. Is he crazy? The outside of my boots were sticky to the touch so I polished them to try to get them back to what they should look like. They are a bit better but still "sticky" and streaky. As well they are very shiny which is not what they should look like. I am not sure what he used but it has ruined the look of my boots All in all, a very bad experience and I will not return. Usually, I would stand my ground and go back and complain, in person, but I could sense Hugo would not be pleasant to deal with so I decided to write this, instead. read more

The place is def less hit and more miss. He can replace soles, or stretch shoes if it's a small job, which he had done for me on two pairs of kitten healed shoes that were in good condition. So that wasn't too tricky for him. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this place, as he ruined a pair of my wedge heel canvas boots. I asked if he could repair the worn canvas that covers the heel of the wedge, and maybe just trim the fray and reattach the edge along the bottom. Instead, he inserted these striped inserts, changing the look of the boot from the back And in the front, there was a faux leather piece that had a buckle on it that hung around the foot, and I didn't even ask him to touch that part, and instead he glued it in place, making the boots tighter. When I asked him about the design of the boots, he did not compensate me in anyway, nor did he think he did anything wrong. Along with his poor workmanship, my boots were also a few weeks late, and now forever ruined. I have never worn them again and tossed them out. read more

I waited a long time (2 weeks) for my black boots to get repaired coz he said that he wanted to do a good job. I paid $45.00 in advance for him to fix and glue some little parts of the front sole. He said he would rip it all apart to make it look better and that he would order a special glue for it. Guess what? I got my black boots back today and it is worse than before. Now it looks like a 2 year old toddler played with a glue stick and applied it all over then tried to fix it and clean it up. And when I called to let him know, he said he was busy and hung up on me. I have never ever experienced this sort of poor service and bad attitude before. I highly DON'T recommend this repair shop. I can do a much better job if I just bought some cheap glue and fixed it myself. He lied to me, hung up on me and ripped me off $45.00.
