Hugo's has been a staple for us from the Sherman oaks/valley location. We moved to Glendale and have been ordering from the Atwater location, either in person or delivery services. Idk what it is, but as of July 2026 the nachos grande with carne asada are amazing. They were good but now they are great. My vegan wife says her crispy tofu burrito is better too

We ordered two breakfast burritos from here on Thursday night just before closing. These both came with chips and a choice of two salsas. All the salsas we got were really good and spicy with distinct tastes. The chips were crispy, a perfect size, and we were given a palatable portion. My breakfast burrito with black beans was thick and delicious. We had no trouble picking up from here and the small parking lot was empty when we went.

One of the best spicy chicken sandwiches I have ever tried and made with love. Fries were thick beautiful bouquet style and the tacos were solid. Service was super friendly and awesome. Will be back when I need a good spicy chicken sandwiches fix!

    Burrito slop- ugh

What a waste of time cash - this was by far the worse burrito ever- barely wrapped tight so when opening the wrapper completely fell apart, super watery, tortilla a soggy mess- wasn't grilled as ordered. NEVER again. How can you screw up a bean burrito with cheese?!

Their chips are REALLY great tasting.

The food isn't that great tasting. I've tried their burritos, and 1 out of 3 visits, I only liked it once. The churros were great though. I would buy those again. I hate the type of mushrooms that they use in their burrito. The horchata was really disappointing. I would recommend sticking with regular tasting horchata. The service is fine. Sitting area outside if ok. There are a few tables, or you can stand.

    Extremely dry Carnitas tacos

first time last time! Too expensive to get a second shot ! The Carnitas tacos were so dry. They were nearly in edible. The AL pastor burrito, lacked that flavor that you know should be in AL Pastor . Super disappointed !

Haven't stopped into a Hugo's Tacos in forever but I was just hangry level hungry at a light and it was straight ahead of me so I decided to get a carne asada burrito w pinto beans (for a change). Thing was pretty massive upon first inspection but biting into it? You realize a good amount of that is just folded up tortilla!?! Odd. In any event, the asada is nicely salted but not overly salty and it tastes like there is some marinade or seasoning there. The two salsas you get - a really pleasant and almost citrusy tomatillo and a spicy red - are both excellent and clearly hand made. They go well on the burrito bites as well as on the supply of thick tortilla chips that come with the burrito as side. The whole affair before tax and tip was $13.79 and I was bummed that it was Thursday because it would've been $10 on Burrito Wednesday. Next time.

The fish taco....added my own sauce btw
    Naya Q.

The tacos are so incredibly bland. I stopped by because my usual spot was busy and I immediately regret it. there's no sauce, no seasoning, no nothing but fish tortilla and onions on the fish taco and the fish is terrible quality and like chopped up? Really really not good Would not come here again.

I ordered two asada tacos, one pastor, and a serving of beans and cheese. The beans and cheese were almost like a soup. It was in an amazing consume... I wonder if it's the same broth for their birria. The beans were soft, but still had some firmness. The cheese reminded me of the cheese on French onion soup. It was one large glob of gooey melts goodness that accented the richness. I highly recommend squirting some lime juice in there to get some acidity. It was awesome and I just want to drink that broth. The Al pastor was fantastic. It came supported by two crisp tortilla shells. The pork was perfectly marinated and the pineapple just worked in harmony. Well executed. The asada was just in a solo tortilla, but was strong enough to support the weight of the meat. There's a good char taste to the meat. It was doused in some guacamole giving it a richness and a nice mouth feel. The onions hidden beneath the green creamy goodness gave a nice pop of brightness. My only critique of this was I wish the spicy salsa was spicier. But that's not a real complaint. The environment was nice. It's not your normal taco shop. It's a little more "nice". They had TVs and an outdoor patio as well. This place is amazing. You need to eat here.

I've gotten the Al Pastor tacos, the Carne Asada burrito, and my girlfriend usually gets the Lengua tacos. Let me just say that these tacos are arguably some of the best tacos in LA. The Al Pastor, carved fresh off the trompo, served with salsa, crema, and piña is seriously delicious. The Asada burrito I got the first time is simple and straight to the point, beans, cheese, asada, onion, and cilantro. The tortillas, at the least the maiz, are made by hand. The flour tortillas for the burritos are tasty. They have a few stools outside to sit down and eat your food as it comes straight from the kitchen. It is limited for seating during busy nights, so be prepared to eat standing up if need be, street taco style. I promise it's worth it! In all, we usually go here after a night out and there is always a line, but it's worth the wait. It would be dangerous if this place was closer to home because we'd eat it every day!

The food definitely has good flavor, but unfortunately, the customer service and attention to detail are horrible. The first time I came here, they completely forgot to give me my torta. When I got it, they had literally only put the protein--nothing else I asked for. At this point, I won't be going back. Good food only goes so far when the service and order accuracy are consistently this bad. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

During our drive home on an early Friday afternoon, we planned on getting lunch somewhere close to home when I saw a sign for Atwater Village. I remembered seeing HomeState next to a thrift store we had shopped before. After a quick mention to the husband -- I had him at tacos. :) Our timing was perfect with one customer in line finishing up his order and several open tables. After a couple minutes with the menu, we decided on 3 tacos (Pecos, Trinity and Tijuana Panthers), Queso Con Carne Dip & Chips and the Ranch Salad (+Shredded Brisket). Those tacos are deceiving -- packed tightly in foil, they look small, but they are stuffed and so flavorful! The husband enjoyed them all but highlighted the Tijuana Panthers as his favorite. The Ranch Salad was generous and tasty. We both agreed that the Queso Con Carne Dip was seriously yum-amazing -- we're still talking about it! Service was super-friendly. There's bar seating, along with several tables inside and outside. Nice decor. Team members were constantly cleaning during our visit. Parking is metered along the street in front of the restaurant and pay to park in the small lot in the back. We found free parking in the neighborhood just a few steps away. It was a great first experience -- we'll definitely dine at HomeState more often!

I was thinking of a traditional breakfast spot with eggs, bacon, and pancakes, but as my daughter reminded me, I wasn't the one that just ran 3 miles in the Santa Anita Anita Derby Day 5K. My daughter recommended HomeState because she had dined there with friends and thought we'd enjoy this Mexican taco spot. After eating here for the first time, I'm glad my daughter chose this spot because the tacos were tasty with their house- made flour tortillas, the loaded queso and chips in young peeps' vernacular slapped, and I appreciated the quality customer service. HomeState is located near Glendale specifically in the Atwater Village area. According to the HomeState website, it's a Texas kitchen in Southern California sharing breakfast tacos, queso, brisket, house-made flour tortillas and genuine hospitality. HomeState has multiple locations around Los Angeles. This location is located on Glendale Blvd. and Madera Ave. It is next to the Out of the Closet Thrift Store and it's across the street from Bon Vivant Market & Cafe. There is a public parking lot towards the back of the restaurant where you pay a small fee for 2 hours. It's a spacious restaurant with wooden picnic bench indoor seating and there's outdoor seating with tables and chairs. The ambience feels like a backyard BBQ with the picnic tables, large brick facade wall with "Welcome Home" inscribed, open kitchen, stringed lights for the outdoor set up, and I thought the decorative light fixtures was a nice touch. As you enter through the front door, you run into the register where you would place your order when you're ready. The gentleman behind the counter was really helpful and provided great recommendations for this first time visitor and the young lady who brought out our food provided friendly customer service. When I asked my daughter what type of food did HomeState serve, she told me Mexican food, which at the time I wasn't feeling that type of cuisine for breakfast. I'm a fan of Denny's, so that's the type of breakfast I'm accustomed to. Since my kiddos had done the heavy lifting finishing their 5K run, I let them choose where they wanted to eat. My daughter has always provided great restaurant recommendations, so I was excited to try HomeState for the first time. When I asked the gentlemen behind the counter what he recommended on the menu, he said the Trinity breakfast taco was the most popular taco. I decided on that taco, the Vaquero taco, and we ordered their Loaded Queso dip to share. I was skeptical whether two tacos and the dip would fill me up, but it was enough food to feed this big dude. The star taco for me was the Trinity taco, which comes with eggs, bacon, potatoes, and cheddar. The bacon was hearty, both the protein and eggs were substantial, and the flour tortilla was the perfect vessel. That taco was really tasty. The Vaquero comes with brisket, pickled jalapeños, onions, cilantro, and lime. Both tacos give you a lot of meat, but I enjoyed the Trinity more than the Vaquero. Make sure to generously use the fresh bottled hot sauces they bring out to you. Besides my Trinity taco, my kiddos and I really loved the Loaded Queso dip, which is queso topped with ground beef, guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream. When it came out, it looked small, but that dip was enough for my adult kids and I. It was creamy, it was a generous amount, it was tasty, and it ate really well with the tortilla chips. I appreciated the young lady server for letting me know to ask her if we needed more chips because that dip was addicting and one round of chips wasn't enough. I'm an old dude, so I'm set in my ways and don't really deviate from what I'm used to eating when it comes to breakfast. When my daughter suggested Mexican food for breakfast, I wasn't excited about it. After eating at HomeState, my daughter picked a really good place for breakfast and if you visit, order the Trinity tacos and the Loaded Queso dip.

You order at the front and go to the pickup window when your food is ready. I didn't see self-serve water or napkins anywhere; luckily, I had brought my own. Free chips and salsa were also provided upon pickup. The salsas were good. My favorite was the mild green salsa, followed by the mild tomato salsa, then the spicy orange salsa. Tacos were about $3.75 each and $4.25 for shrimp. It was pretty expensive for street tacos, and the double tortillas were essential to stretch the small amount of meat. The flavor of the corn tortilla took over about halfway into the tacos. The tortillas didn't taste fresh due to the slightly sour taste. But we did go at 7 pm (1 hour before closing), so maybe that's why. - Carne asada taco: best meat flavor, but not my favorite carne asada. - Carnitas taco: best meat texture with the crispy bits, but I couldn't really taste the pork. - Potato taco: tasted good. The potatoes were mashed and seasoned with something making them slightly orange. - Shrimp taco: the first bite tasted great, but consecutive bites mainly tasted like corn tortilla and the creamy sauce on top. I also had a bite of my bf's carne asada torta with everything on it. He enjoyed it, but I thought it was just okay because the inside was too wet for me. Since they pressed the sandwich like a panini, the bread was crispy with a slight chew. I might have preferred it unpressed.
