We've driven by different HomeState locations from time to time, holding on to a mental note to try it one day. During our drive home on an early Friday afternoon, we planned on getting lunch somewhere close to home when I saw a sign for Atwater Village. I remembered seeing HomeState next to a thrift store we had shopped before. After a quick mention to the husband -- I had him at tacos. :) Our timing was perfect with one customer in line finishing up his order and several open tables. After a couple minutes with the menu, we decided on 3 tacos (Pecos, Trinity and Tijuana Panthers), Queso Con Carne Dip & Chips and the Ranch Salad (+Shredded Brisket). Those tacos are deceiving -- packed tightly in foil, they look small, but they are stuffed and so flavorful! The husband enjoyed them all but highlighted the Tijuana Panthers as his favorite. The Ranch Salad was generous and tasty. We both agreed that the Queso Con Carne Dip was seriously yum-amazing -- we're still talking about it! Service was super-friendly. There's bar seating, along with several tables inside and outside. Nice decor. Team members were constantly cleaning during our visit. Parking is metered along the street in front of the restaurant and pay to park in the small lot in the back. We found free parking in the neighborhood just a few steps away. It was a great first experience -- we'll definitely dine at HomeState more often! read more

After my kiddos finished the 5K they ran together, we had planned to eat breakfast somewhere for a post-race refuel. I was thinking of a traditional breakfast spot with eggs, bacon, and pancakes, but as my daughter reminded me, I wasn't the one that just ran 3 miles in the Santa Anita Anita Derby Day 5K. My daughter recommended HomeState because she had dined there with friends and thought we'd enjoy this Mexican taco spot. According to the HomeState website, it's a Texas kitchen in Southern California sharing breakfast tacos, queso, brisket, house-made flour tortillas and genuine hospitality. HomeState has multiple locations around Los Angeles. This location is located on Glendale Blvd. and Madera Ave. It is next to the Out of the Closet Thrift Store and it's across the street from Bon Vivant Market & Cafe. There is a public parking lot towards the back of the restaurant where you pay a small fee for 2 hours. It's a spacious restaurant with wooden picnic bench indoor seating and there's outdoor seating with tables and chairs. The ambience feels like a backyard BBQ with the picnic tables, large brick facade wall with "Welcome Home" inscribed, open kitchen, stringed lights for the outdoor set up, and I thought the decorative light fixtures was a nice touch. As you enter through the front door, you run into the register where you would place your order when you're ready. The gentleman behind the counter was really helpful and provided great recommendations for this first time visitor and the young lady who brought out our food provided friendly customer service. When I asked my daughter what type of food did HomeState serve, she told me Mexican food, which at the time I wasn't feeling that type of cuisine for breakfast. I'm a fan of Denny's, so that's the type of breakfast I'm accustomed to. Since my kiddos had done the heavy lifting finishing their 5K run, I let them choose where they wanted to eat. My daughter has always provided great restaurant recommendations, so I was excited to try HomeState for the first time. When I asked the gentlemen behind the counter what he recommended on the menu, he said the Trinity breakfast taco was the most popular taco. I decided on that taco, the Vaquero taco, and we ordered their Loaded Queso dip to share. I was skeptical whether two tacos and the dip would fill me up, but it was enough food to feed this big dude. The star taco for me was the Trinity taco, which comes with eggs, bacon, potatoes, and cheddar. The bacon was hearty, both the protein and eggs were substantial, and the flour tortilla was the perfect vessel. That taco was really tasty. The Vaquero comes with brisket, pickled jalapeños, onions, cilantro, and lime. Both tacos give you a lot of meat, but I enjoyed the Trinity more than the Vaquero. Make sure to generously use the fresh bottled hot sauces they bring out to you. Besides my Trinity taco, my kiddos and I really loved the Loaded Queso dip, which is queso topped with ground beef, guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream. When it came out, it looked small, but that dip was enough for my adult kids and I. It was creamy, it was a generous amount, it was tasty, and it ate really well with the tortilla chips. I appreciated the young lady server for letting me know to ask her if we needed more chips because that dip was addicting and one round of chips wasn't enough. I'm an old dude, so I'm set in my ways and don't really deviate from what I'm used to eating when it comes to breakfast. When my daughter suggested Mexican food for breakfast, I wasn't excited about it. After eating at HomeState, my daughter picked a really good place for breakfast and if you visit, order the Trinity tacos and the Loaded Queso dip. read more

We were in LA for a show, so we stopped in here to give it a try. We tried the brisket taco, chicken taco, and queso con carne. It was all delicious. My favorite was the chicken taco..it had so much flavor. Ordering was easy, and they came and helped us clean our table when we were finished. Delicious tacos, quick service, the kindest employees. We loved how bright and airy the place was with seating inside and out. There is only street parking and it seemed to get busier around 10:30, but before that the place was almost to ourselves! Home state was a pleasant surprise. We were looking for a quick place to eat before a show. The food was really good, I even bought a bag of tortillas from them because they make them in house. Out of all the things we ordered I liked the chicken taco the best. The flavors were perfect. They even provide house made salsas for you to try and both were delicious. Not too spicy. The service was excellent. The indoor and outdoor seating is also great. The only thing I have to complain about is the bathrooms. I believe they share them with other businesses but they were in horrid shape. Out of the 4 individual bathrooms available, one was in good shape. Was craving food and honestly I was like let me get a salad, but my drive lead me to this place and they pretty much said "mmmm perhaps not!" Ended up getting a delicious chorizo with egg bowl that had tortilla scrambled in there as well. Came out to $12, it was actually pretty filling and helped me get through my day not too hungry afterwards, I will definitely come back to try their tacos to give a review on their flour and corn tacos. Thank you for the meal and the green sauce was bomb highly recommend dumping it all over your bowl or taco. Vegan options are available as well and i am certain they'll be as delicious as well. Breakfast tacos.. I really wanted to love this place but sadly could not. We came on a Saturday for brunch and it was pretty packed. The food looked promising as their tortillas are hand made. I paid $85 for 6 tacos, a queso dip, a paloma and a ranch water. The tacos I had were the vaquero (braised beef) and the chicken taco. It just wasn't special. Nothing tasted unique and I want to say it was closer to the bland side. I also expected a lot more from the braised beef and it didn't deliver. Their tacos are $6 each and though they are massive, the taste was not worth it for me. I will admit their salsas were good and the queso dip was delicious. It was the only wow for me and loved that it came with ground beef but the queso alone wouldn't be enough for me to come back. read more

They also have a great chips and queso, and the margarita is strong. I've only been to two locations, but I much prefer the Atwater one over Culver City due to them having parking and way more seating. Good variety of choices on the menu, prices on the higher side in regard to the portions. What I ordered: -Don't Mess with Texas: This was pretty simple but filling because of the beans. Definitely bland and something you could make at home. I also wasn't a fan of the salsas. 3/5 -Brisket Taco: This was actually really good, but they are stingy on the brisket. The tortilla is too large for the amount of filling so it totally looks like a skinny underfilled taco. Guacamole did provide a delicious, much needed flavor. Brisket was good but wished there was more. 4/5 -Loaded Chips & Queso: SO GOOD! Not as good as Torchy's but will satisfy the craving at home. I enjoyed the added flavor and texture the brisket added to the queso. Chips are unlimited when dining in! 5/5 -Salted Chocolate Chip Cookie: Delicious, quality gourmet cookie! Sea salt and dark chocolate complement the buttery cookie perfectly! 5/5 Overall, I enjoyed my food here but was a little disappointed in regard to the portions as well as flavor. I love the vegetarian options. Unfortunately, during this visit, they were out of The Batman. We ordered 15 tacos and a salad at the counter and went for a walk in the area to kill time as we waited for the food. The area (Glendale Bl.) is adorable with many unique shops and restaurants. When we returned, our food was packaged up and ready to go. When we sat down to eat our food, it was warm and delicious! The tacos look small, but they are quite filling. I'm not a fan of Texan queso so I was hesitant to try this restaurant out. Turns out they have non dairy options and you can also get the charro beans without cheese so I was pleasantly surprised. I had their brisket and chicken tacos on corn. Both packed with juicy and flavorful meat instead meat. I liked both but I preferred the brisket because it wasn't as juicy as the chicken. The charro beans could have more bacon or something because they tasted like pure beans but still good. Next time I'll try their signature flour tortillas for their tacos. My husband and I got 4 tacos, 2 bristek, 1 chorizo breakfast, and 1 bacon breakfast. The server gave us free queso since it was our first time there (thank you!!). My 5* rating is really for the brisket tacos. I could have skipped everything else and just eaten brisket. The brisket is salty, tender, juicy, and just oh so satisfying. There is no better brisket than a Texas brisket, and Homestate does it right! Topped with guac, cilantro, and onions + red and green salsa. Absolutely amazing! Always a solid option, HomeState is great for a quick bite as you peruse Atwater Village, or to cater for any function (I find them great for morning volunteer set-ups, everyone goes crazy for the breakfast tacos - such a great change from the usual bagel or donut options). I don't usually go in for a pre-blended adult beverage, but their spicy Palomas are very good (and very spicy), but watch out for the inevitable brain freeze. Great salsas, tacos, queso - I usually opt for the potato tacos, or the breakfast tacos. The brisket is stewed, so is more of a "wet meat" filling, just FYI. I love smoked brisket, but this is a different preparation. if you haven't been, get the queso with brisket, a few tacos and you're set! I got their loaded queso with the chili brisket, 1 Chicken everyday taco, and 1 Guadalupe breakfast taco. Their loaded queso wasn't too bad but it just tasted very lukewarm and didn't make the best impression. Their tacos were pretty bad... they weren't cold but they were lukewarm as well. The cheese wasn't even melted underneath the breakfast taco. The food was disappointing and I don't think I'd come back. But I will say, the staff at this location is honestly so kind and friendly! I had walked past this Atwater Village HomeState location many times since it opened, and I decided to give it a try recently! I went for an early weekend dinner, and given the long line that developed shortly after I ordered, this place is having no trouble with popularity. There's seating both inside the restaurant and in the shared alley between HomeState and Holy Basil, and I liked that I could do solo bar seating. I appreciated the efficient service and thought my food order came promptly. I also liked the consistency in food quality compared to my other HomeState visits; I thought my taco, chips, and guacamole were as good as I remember from eating at the Hollywood location. read more

The tacos were a bit under seasoned and they were ripping apart as I ate them. I also noticed that all the tacos were lukewarm. The only part of my order that was piping hot were the potatoes. I usually order the brisket quesadilla as it is one of my favorites. This time around the tray that was holding the quesadilla was also my quesadilla and oil. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. My partner and I ordered our food and were waiting for a table to open up. We saw a couple leave, and one of the employees cleaned the table and left. My partner and I genuinely thought he was finished, so I sat down while my partner grabbed us water. About a minute later, the same employee (guy with a beard wearing a cap) came back to the table with a cleaning rag and said, "I'm not done cleaning the table," in a blunt and annoyed tone. I completely understand the need to wipe down tables and honestly appreciate it, but the way it was communicated caught me off guard. I apologized and went back to wait at the front. He easily could have said something like, "Let me wipe that table down for you!" I just believe the interaction could have gone completely differently, and the way it was handled would have rubbed many customers the wrong way. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed my meal. read more

Yesterday was mine and my friend's first time trying homestate and they did not disappoint. The service is a bit of wait since they only have 1 person cashiering but the line moves pretty quick. The inside ambiance is chill, and music is playing while you dine. The tacos were so yummy, filling and a lot of flavor but I do recommend maybe adding a bit more heat to the salsas. read more

I met J and T after work here. J, my kid, had just finished his first year of college. He looked taller. He hugged me. He ordered four tacos. I ordered one. T, his father, ordered a salad and a taco. T and I split it 50/50, tipping twenty percent. There were free tables, none of them clean. A man sitting at a picnic table said they never clean the tables here. I wondered why we tipped so much, but in these situations, you just have to suck it up - tipping before you know what kind of service you're going to get. But I was so happy to see J I didn't think too hard on it. He was so happy to eat tacos and I was so happy to see him eating the tacos. He loved school. Did he have plans for the summer? Like a job? He had none so far and I was worried. Had I done something wrong? I had told him throughout the beginning of the year to get a head start on things. But he was caught up in the moment of school. I was glad of it, but life moves so fast these days. Everyone seems to have a head start. Did I prepare him to be someone with a plan? A lot of my friends found jobs for their kids.
