A longtime business of over 100 years across from the old city (Masonic) cemetery, this business offers multiple options at many different price points and customization options for a gravestone/memorial monument. I visited two times on my own and was ably helped by Christy D. Christy was so kind and patient and gave me estimates for a custom headstone as well as a couple of other stock/standard headstones. It was a struggle at the time trying to get everyone's input in the family and I got overwhelmed trying to make the ultimate decision. The third time my Dad came with me to an appointment and we were finally ready to commit and make a decision. We were able to choose a custom bronze monument and I chose a blue granite base that we found out weighed 2 tons (yes, it was the most expensive option and I was not surprised, I make a beeline for the best). Christy was familiar with the guidelines at the cemetery where mom is buried. She spent a lot of time building us a template and then had a photo proof for approval via email shortly after. She even noted a discrepancy that I had missed and made sure everything was exactly as we wanted. Christy's kindness, patience, sensitivity, and detail-oriented business acumen was so exceptional. We will never forget her wonderful approach to this challenging work. We were consistently updated via email regarding the order and when the monument was installed. Payment for our custom stone was required in full once final approval was made. Note, it took 5 months from ordering to completion but it was completed a month earlier than the initial six month estimate. We chose a photo for the monument as well as an inset vase for flowers. In the end, I'm glad I visited another monument company and decided without hesitation to return to Ruhkala. My dad and I could not be more pleased with the outcome, the professionalism, and the beauty of the final product that will stand as a tribute and memorial to my mom's life. The Broadway location, although a small corner lot adjacent to Midtown Sacramento (on the same side of street/ across from Sellands) has extensive examples of headstones both inside and outside to look at in person, in addition to thick photo albums displaying a catalogue of installed monuments. Prices are as low as $900 for a simple recessed monument to I would imagine no limit based on what is desired. There is also a larger showroom in Rocklin. From what I understand Ruhkala has a granite quarry in Rocklin as well and they provide many of the stones to other local monument companies.

A day or two before the service they they opened an online obituary portal at their home page that allowed folks to leave well-wishes online. The comments are vetted before being published (authorization completed by the family of the deceased). The day of service was extremely hard, but the funeral home was absolutely professional and there was not oddities to report. The location of the funeral home was reasonable to get to--parking limited, but manageable. It was a hot day, but they had the air conditioning set to a chill level (making sense for open caskets). I don't mean to sound clinical about this review, especially when so much emotion can go into why you are there, but in the end. The funeral home was clean, provided for everybody that came to pay their respects. Prior to the service they cycled photos and/ or video reflecting memories of my friend and his family that survived him. I can't address pricing, but I heard the average cost of a funeral can easily run around 15K, and the lavatory I don't know because I didn't use it. The initial room where you first walk in is furnished nicely and to be honest it was a good area to take little ones that aren't able to sit long during the service. The area allows you to still hear what's going, limits the noise the main hall hears, and keeps you out of immediate line of sight. Anyway, if you have to use services like this, North Sacramento Funeral Home is professional and does it correct.

This is the first time I've ever had to plan and organize a funeral and just wanted to honor my father's memory in the best I could with what I could afford. I Went into the shop back in May or June 2022 to order my father's gravestone and was told that it would be placed by August. I've e-mailed and called several times for updates and it always takes forever to get a response. No one ever answers the phone and the owner takes days or weeks to return calls and messages (if at all). I was home during Thanksgiving break and went to the shop to talk to the owner and the shop was closed even though the hours listed on window said that they were open. The next day, I received an e-mail from the owner informing me that he's "working on it". I replied to his e-mail letting him know that I will seek a full refund and take my business elsewhere if the gravestone is not place by the end of the year. I just want a nice memorial for my dad. It shouldn't be drawn out like this. I can't tell you how upsetting it is to see nothing at my dads gravesite other gravestones already installed for people who passed after my father. I am seeking legal advice on how to proceed.

He was of sound mind and very proud that we would not have to worry about anything financially! I called three years ago and spoke to "Clarence" who was in charge of the funeral side and told me that everything was paid for in advance and that there would be no costs. He pulled the paperwork and I emailed mine to him and he said yes! After setting up an appointment a week after he passed and with our paperwork in hand, they began to tell us that the only thing that was paid for was "the plot" only??? Nothing else is paid for??? Our Fred was a very smart man and retired from the State of California after 45 years as a IT guy. He retired after working at the California State Lottery Commission! He would never just take to drive to South Sacramento when he lived in Citrus Heights and just pay for a plot with nothing else paid for!! He did not want that burden put on us financially and he said so 10 years ago and again 3 years ago!!! As his family, we never understood why he choose this funeral home and cemetery to be buried at, when no one in our family ever lived in South Sacramento, unless he responded to some sort of "ad" they sent out in 2001 as a way to gain business. The place was old, dark, run down, not kept up and smelled of urine. We looked at the paperwork in the office and it says no casket?? We were shocked and didn't know what was going on here. So, we looked at each other knew it must of meant that he was being cremated?? Wrong... The paperwork is not right? Something is not right! He was more than likely "mislead" and told something else otherwise. This smells like "fraud" here. He took care of all of this and signed this prepaid contract on 7/16/2001, and put money down on his prepaid contract and made 72 payments of $76.00 taken directly out of his bank account!!! I just read some complaints on here where inexperienced employees did not have the right amounts on paperwork and some paperwork was missing!! In the meeting, they were trying to shove a expensive price list in our face so they could take even more money on top of what he paid. Something is not right here and again, it smells like "fraud" and trying to mislead customers. PLEASE BE AWARE AND DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!! RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN! DO NOT PREPAID ANY FUNERAL SERVICES WITH THEM! We left very upset and felt bad that they mislead him and took his money. Again, he would never just purchase a "plot" only and nothing else. Who does that? You have to put the remains somewhere before a burial, and he would not do that!! We told them that he was mislead and got up and walked up before they tried for the "second" time to shove a expensive price list in our face!! I told them I would be contacting our Attorney and Law Firm to obtain back the monies he paid by having them to buy back his plot for the price he paid for it. This is the right thing to do.The funeral counselor that gets paid via commissions only, said that the plot was now worth $18,000. We only want the price of the money he paid in July 2001. I am filing a complaint with the "Funeral Consumers Alliance" and the "Cementery and Funeral Bureau" here in California. I decided to write this on Yelp so this doesn't happen to anyone else. This is heartbreaking, because anytime you purchase funeral packages or families trying to make arrangements, etc. is a very emotional and sad time. And, this is one where he was taken advantage of. How many more families of the Sacramento community has this happened to from Sacramento Memorial Lawn and not reported. Some of the written comments on here have gone through poor experiences at such a stressful and emotional time. We ended up finding a wonderful funeral home/chapel In Roseville where we live, who has been family owned since 1954, before we even left SML's parking lot. We were a little stressed after all of that. They took us in like we were part of the family and the Manager greeted us with empathy and kindness of what we had just gone through with SML. She sat down with us to support us and help us to set up getting the cremation taken care of and his body transported from Mercy Hospital to their crematory. She went over every detail of the prices, we paid for everything, signed the paperwork and were on our way. This gave us so much peace and we were grateful at the way things turned out for us.
