Restaurant was clean when we walked in. Seated right away, and the waitress took our drink order and said help yourself! You get a bowl, and I would recommend doing a quick walk through just to look at everything, so as to decide what to fill it with. Set the bowl on the counter, and kind of keep an eye out on your food as it's being cooked, pick it up when it comes to the counter. There is also a few more condiments to consider at the end of the counter. There was a bowl of rice waiting on the table with our drinks when we returned. You can return and do the process as many times as you like as it is all you care to eat. I like that I could make the bowl as healthy (or not) as I wanted. read more

Not a bad place for all you can eat magnolia grill. You fill your bowl with protein, vegetables, sauces, and off you go to have some chefs cook it up for you on a hot circular hot plate thingy. So overall it's nice because you can make things to your liking. Now the bad is their bowls are tiny. You can barely fit any protein and noodles not to mention vegetables. The bowl is like 16oz and you have food falling off and sauces spilling everywhere. The other bad is it's difficult to figure out what sauces to combine as following their instructions creates bland and boring food. So by the time you are done you have an okay dish you created by putting in God knows what sauces. Maybe if there was a chef asking how I want my food it would be nice as I could tell him what flavors I like. But do it yourself is just not that great. So overall I give it 3 stars. The quality of food and freshness of it is great. I just wish there was a better way to put it all together to make a composed dish that is not falling off your bowl. read more

Very cool place. A lot of great options and flavors. One thing I really liked is their meat options were very cold almost to frozen. So you didn't have a lot of thawed out meat and drippings sitting there next to each other and getting on everything. The bowls seem small but you can put a lot in there and it comes to be a decent amount once it is on your plate. They have multiple sauce options to choose from and you can get a lot of scoops. We also ordered their pot stickers and instead of regular dumpling outside it was as if they had been fried which was nice and the sauce to dip those in was really good. Nothing special, but far from the worst. However, it pales in comparison to other chains (BD's is one) in its lack of choices. The only starch available is steamed white rice and the vegetables and meats are obviously frozen. Although most vegetables are easily identifiable, it would be nice if they were identified with signs. $11 for lunch (no soup or salad) on MLK day seemed a little steep as well. The benefit to Hu-Hot over some (such as Genghis Grill) is you are (as many have noted) offered unlimited portions; therefore if you make a lousy sauce combination, you can simply discard it and try again. read more

I'm not sure I'll be able to finish this review without stopping and going again. It's THAT good. Fresh veggies really make this incredible, but the sauces are what really raise the bar for me. There are so many combinations of meat, noodles, veggies, and sauces, that you could have a totally different taste than the previous plate you just inhaled. I love that this is ~somewhat~ healthy. One of my favorite lunch spots. Great variety of ingredients and sauces, which allows you to create your own stir fry that is always piping hot fresh off the grill. I like how they now have zucchini "zoodles" when I'm trying to avoid excessive carbs. With that being said, the zoodles are hit and miss and sometimes are more like shredded zucchini instead of the ideal wider and longer spirals, which provide more of a consistency that resembles an actual noodle. Also, my only other issue is when the chefs spray water on people's creations. They should ask first, because some people might prefer a more crispy stir fry and don't want a soggy watered down plate. I do like how they offer a to-go option if you don't want to spend time eating in the restaurant. The bartenders offer better service than the dining room, in my opinion. read more

Update: So I ended up leaving my card there and went the next day to pick it up... and ate there again the very next day. It's obviously good enough to do that. Came during a late Saturday afternoon and ordered what was considered the dinner option which was over $14 per person. Kinda expensive but comes with soup or salad and rice and the options of meats offer more high end choices, mussels and calimari in this case, which I fully took advantage of. I appreciated the server telling me she prefers the ranch over ginger salad dressing bc the ginger is so sweet. Thank you! Always watching my carbs and nothing worse than a server that won't make a recommendation. The salad was good. No iceberg lettuce, good spring greens with one slice of cucumber and a grape tomato. The hot and sour soup is not for everyone. Very tart (vinegary). My dining companion thought it too salty but I finished it. Liked the tart and mushrooms but the julienne bamboo shoots is heavy and no egg or other traditional Chinese restaurant hot and sour features. The bowls are small and the attempt at limiting serving size takes away from the experience. For instance, if I do hibachi elsewhere, I fill up on one trip. Here, the small serving sizes make you do multiple trips which is not conducive to time efficiency or consistency... for better or worse every trip is a new experience. Anyways, they don't seem to say anything if you use 2 bowls per one trip. Which is good. People are going to eat what they're going to eat and trying to make them do it in 2 or 3 trips is better customer experience than forcing them into 3 or 4 trips. Most people only do 1 trip and some do 2. Small percentages do more than that. The sauces don't have nutrition info. That would've been nice. As well as low sugar, gluten free or vegan options. The people doing the grilling are the best. Happy, proud and overall enjoyable. That's definitely something you dont see elsewhere. And consistency... they are tenured. Do tip them! I wonder if the wait staff has to tip them out. I do hope so. The water glasses are too small especially bc the wait staff could not keep them filled. If i were them, i would offer more e.g. i can get you soy sauce, hot sauce or other condiments... to better demonstrate their value or worth. Today was my best visit in regards to food. It wasn't overcooked! See picture. And Somewhat in response to other's comments, your stomach may be gassy after eating here. It is not food poisoning. I haven't been here in a few years, but my daughter had asked that we try it, so I obliged. Everything is exactly the same except it's a lot dirtier than I remember. We arrived as a pair at 6:05 and were quoted 25 minutes. At 6:47 we were seated after I pointed out a few empty tables with checks laying on them. The table was wiped down with a cloth that had been lying on the floor by the hostess stand. Everything felt greasy at our table. We sat for quite some time before getting our drink order placed. When we went through the assembly line almost every ingredient was disgustingly mixed with those around it. The sauce area was just covered in oils. While we waited in line my daughter looked at me and said "Dad, can we go? This place is gross." I was relieved. I dropped $40 on our table and we left. read more

I haven't been back to DSM in many years but have always loved this place! I was skeptical of a buffet style restaurant in the current pandemic situation and statistical chance that people there would not be vaccinated. Unfortunately, almost no customers wore masks or used the provided gloves. The staff however, even with being noticeably short staffed, did an amazing job with taking appropriate precautions. The server was great. The establishment on the other hand has really disappointed me. I have been going here on Tuesdays for years because the kids eat free. I was informed by the manager that this location no longer participated in the promotion and they were unable to remove the charge from my bill. If they aren't going to participate in a national promotion anymore they should put signage on the door or front desk letting people know they no longer participating in the promotion. At the very least they should have refunded me and said in the future the kids are not free. But nope. All I got was to read the fine print. I looked for the fine print everywhere and it was nowhere to be found. I hope they stop falsely advertising a promotion to get customers and then claiming that they don't have to honor it. read more
