There's a new soft opening of a little eatery called Hui Lau Shan west of UC Berkeley. This is a new Hong Kongese styled dessert spot specializing in mango recipes and other assorted ingredients like taro and durian. Their desserts are flavorful and fresh! They've got desserts including handmade mango, fruit and drinks (juices). I was feeling for a quick pick me up with their Red Dragon Fruit Icy which was surprisingly different and delicious! I'll come back with the intent of trying something new. Looks can be deceiving when entering as they're quite small in space but there's a plentiful amount of seating roomed just behind the store. I'm not sure why this place is so famous as I had never heard of the brand before but it appears to be very popular. We went on a night than was busy but no line out the door. There isn't much seating in the front but there is additional seating in the back in a sort of weird separate room. Both areas were full when we arrived but I think turnover is high since it doesn't take that long to eat the food. Tried the mango pomelo sago and it was ok. Too many big ice chunks for my liking and the mango wasn't as "fragrant" as it could be but of course it is winter time. There isn't much pomelo on it nor sago. I would say it's mostly ice, coconut milk, and mango. The taro glutinous rice was much more to my liking but I generally prefer warm soups to shaved ice stuff. The balls were nice and chewy and the soup was good and "glutinous" and not too sweet. My only complaint is that it's a pretty small bowl. It is a relatively unique offering in Berkeley and I will probably be back. read more

OMG IT'S HERE!!! HK mango dessert legend Hui Lau Shan is the latest Asian dessert chain to arrive in the downtown Berkeley area... and the one I've been most excited for! Desserts are a bit pricey for the portion and icy for the price, but where else can you reliably get that deep golden mango with every permutation of coconut sago?! You're in luck... 10 percent off with yelp check in. FOOD: mango pomelo sago bowl: lovely flavor combination, but the coconut milk ice mixture it sat in had beads of ice that really prevented me from enjoying the sago (ice chunk size is greater than sago size). This was topped by a scoop of mango sorbet that was good, but not life changing (on par with Trader Joe's). mango duo (mango, coconut ice, red bean) was my favorite of what we tried. A generous scoop of red bean at the bottom, icy coconut (boo), fresh mango (at $8 a pop, would have appreciated more), and a scoop of mango sorbet. mango pancake was yummy--pancake was tender, cream was the right cross of light and dairy dense, and mango was golden yellow and divine! Warning that mango and cream together isn't for everyone (it's barely for me). What's fun about HLS though is that there's something for everyone (so long as they like fruit)--mango anything is a crowd pleaser. For the braver/more Asian palates, there are also hot porridges (taro, sesame + tan yuen, durian) and a durian pancake that wafted through the back room :). SERVICE: kind cashiers (order at counter, take utensils, bus yourself) and buzzer system (!). They take credit card and and have adorable bags ($.25 ea) for to go. AMBIANCE: at first glance, it looks like the west coast version of the HK counterpart--small front area where you order at the counter. Fear not! Through a highly guided (via signage) twisting path, you arrive at a largeish back room (can seat 25, plus two high top standing tables). We had no trouble finding a table for two. Solid 4.5 desserts and drinks are yummy with lots of real mango flavor without being too sweet. I am 99% sure these guys don't add any sugar and let the fruit flavor shine through. Online ordering is easiest especially with multiple items/ppl in my "bubble", you can also pay online and just show up. Totally touchless other than you grabbing your bag of goodies. The people there are total nice too, as I had to phone in a adjustment to my order, where I transacted the payment at their little kiosk/pay pad. I was so excited for another dessert place to open and Hui Lau Shan didn't disappoint! The best thing about this place has to be the drinks, like I would come back again and again for the drinks. We ordered the Aloe & Aloe Jelly in watermelon juice, Mango w/ coconut, and Pomelo & Mango. These were so so sooooo good, 10/10 recommend! Of course I had to try the desserts too, so I ordered the Mango Chewy Ball. It was decent, a lot smaller than I expected but full of mango-y goodness. Interior wise, this place looks really small once you walk in but there is extra seating in the back! It's a bit of the walk, you walk down the down and into a hall way (that seems to connect to all the other stores in the building), and there you'll see seating for Hui Lau Shan. Omg yay!!! Finally got to try this location and it's just as good as I remembered. Thank you for opening during SIP! We got two drinks (D4 & D5) and a dessert (A1) to go and they were all really good. I could taste the fresh mango flavor and the sweetness was just right. I love mango so this place is like heaven for me lol! The only complaint about this place is the portion. The cup for the large drink wasn't that big; it was more like a regular sized milk tea. I was still craving for more after I finished my drink. Anyways, I'm so happy to have Hui Lau Shan in the Bay Area again. Calling all mango lovers!! Hui Lau Shan is a place you won't regret coming to. To really demonstrate my love for this place, while I was still living in Berkeley, I literally went to Hui Lau Shan for four Mondays in a row because of their 15% happy hour on Snackpass. Their mango drinks were my way of rewarding myself for studying hard. My favorites --  The drinks are my favorite and I also think they give you the most value! Pomelo and Mango with Sago (D3) is amazing, so is Mango & Mango with Crystal Jelly (D5), and Mango & Coconut with Sago (D4). I'm also a big fan of Aloe and Coconut, so Mango & Coconut with Aloe Jelly (D6) is fantastic. All the fruit is so fresh & juicy, especially the mango. It's just the perfect amount of ripeness. For first timers, I would definitely recommend Pomelo and Mango with Sago (D3) or Mango & Mango with Crystal Jelly (D5). My "it was alright" -- I've also ordered the Mango Romance before (A2). While it does offer a great variety of things to try, the portion sizes are really small in my opinion. While it may look like a lot, each dish is ~2/3's of my small palms aka ~3 inches in diameter? TIP -- I would highly suggest that you download Snackpass if you haven't because they offer a lot of great deals in Berkeley! It allows you to order online before you leave your house and also offers a point system so you can accumulate points to get free food in the future. Another dessert place?!?! YAY I was excited to try this dessert place especially because I love mango. I ordered the mango romance which is a sample platter of most of the things they offer! Mango Romance - mangos were fresh and yummy - mango ice was very interesting, not much flavor - the jelly under the mango ice was very basic - the chewy balls were delicious and glutinous - the platter was a little underwhelming - nothing special stuck out for me Even with these complaints, I still think it is pretty delicious! The front of the store was tiny and we weren't sure where to sit, but there was a bigger room in the back with long tables & benches. I liked the texture of the shaved ice. Those of us who have wolfed down bowl after fabulous bowl of yummy mango goodness while triapsing the streets of Hong Kong truly rejoiced when we saw this was opening in Berkeley. Could it be? That cheap cold ultra mango-ey experience here in our neighborhood? Sans the cheap part, the menu largely honors what I feel is the true spirit of HLS - mango, mango and more mango. In every combination possible, and even in jumbo sized bowls for sharing. Today afternoon, I got the mango sago. It tasted great, I shared it with my husband and toddler, happy faces all around. Fast forward a couple of hours later, all of us are having upset stomachs. Considering this was the only thing all 3 of us consumed in common today, it's hard to think of anything else as the culprit. It says alot about how badly I want to love this place, that it still gets 2 stars from me after that! So, just a caution about getting the mango sago. I been an huge fan of Hui Lau Shan since I was a kid and excited to have mango dessert near by! Loving the new mango logo/figure, it's very cute. Store front is quite smaller than usual but new and clean, with a total of 10 seats inside. Service / Pricing Cashed is friendly and order comes out very fast. Packing is clean and food looks fresh. As for pricing, all mango dessert are $6.5, felt slightly high for the local area. There's also a set price on togo bags for 25cents (no other options), which feels over charged especially in Berkeley. Food There's not much drink and dessert selection (maybe due to new opening). It's serving the most classic mango dessert and drinks, which I like. Mango Chewy Ball $6.5 One of the most classic / must order. Mango is fresh and delicious and chewy ball goes perfectly with the mango base. Mango Mochi 6pieces / $9 There's no mango pieces inside??? My friend brought me to Hui Lau Shan for the first time and I was SO excited to try it! We got the Mango Delightful Trio, Mango Chewy Ball and finally at the end couldn't resist also getting the Mango Pancake to share. It was sooo delicious - I have been craving dessert that was not too sweet, and the mango was super fresh and really refreshing. The Mango Delightful Trio in particular was wonderful as the black pudding at the bottom has a great consistency mixed with the mango as well as the coconut flavors - so awesome. I've been here 4 times throughout the past month, and each time I swear the mango ranges from sour to sweet, but overall it's really great for groups of people and there's seating in the back as well! I'd suggest A1- jumbo mango chewy ball and A4 (which is basically the A1 but smaller). I would say the A1 is a good size for 2-3 people and A4 is good for 1-2. A5 (mango coconut noodle) was really interesting because of the texture of the coconut noodles, but if you're a fan of coconut, I think you'll enjoy it.
