Saw a clip on this place on Instagram and I added to my hot list. On a recent visit to the UCB campus we stopped by here after lunch. The place is very small. Only 4 counter seatings with high stools and a small table for two. Some reviewers said there is another room in the back, but when we visited there was a barrier erected in the hallway preventing access. You can order using the kiosk or from the staff. This place specializes in fresh made mango and coconut desserts/drinks. These type of cafes are popular in Hong Kong so we are so glad now it is available close to home. We ordered the Mango with Dragon Fruit Icy, Mango with Crystal Jelly, and the jumbo Mango with sago and pomelo. The mangos for each drink tasted so fresh and they were generous with the portions. For a warm day like the day we visited, these dessert drinks were so refreshing and the combination of fresh mangos with other desserts like crystal jelly, chewy balls or sago were so delightful. The jumbo mango with sago and pomelo can easily be shared by two so for the price it was a great value. We vow to return to try other items from the menu.
Nice little dessert place. This is a HongKong dessert name known for their sweet delicious mango desserts. We ordered the C4 mango pancake and A1 Jumbo mango chewy balls. Maybe it's no longer mango season so the mangoes in our orders were p sour. Even the mango ice cream in the A1 was sour and icy. So try only when mangoes are in season or other non-mango desserts?
One evening in Berkeley, after dinner, we searched for a dessert place to walk off our meal. We discovered Hui Lau San, which has limited seating. Only one staff member was working, and orders were made at a kiosk, as is common today. Many to-go orders were visible. The staff was friendly and efficient. We enjoyed the coconut jelly with mango, which was delicious, along with the coconut jelly with rice. The sago with coconut milk had a delightful flavor. I would love to return and explore more of their menu.
I always enjoy coming here for a good mango coconut sago. The place is small with limited seating so I would consider it most mostly a two go spot but if you get lucky, you can have a small group sit there. They are very quick to serve you and their drink drinks are very refreshing. I've tried multiple items on the list and I liked them all, but I really enjoy going there specifically for the mango sago. Of course it's downtown Berkeley so parking can be tough but usually when we go there we've gone somewhere else before so it's not an issue. They are a self order location unless you need help they will help you.
Really good and fast service. Mine as shown below is ordered through fresh daily made at Weee! It is so sad that they closed sister stores in Asia such as those ones in Hong Kong. The fast food cafe like atmosphere also reminds me of happy, carefree days as a Cal student so I will keep ordering and supporting them. The best thing about Asian dessert is that the taste and sugar level is always "just right" and never too sweet!
This Hong Kong style dessert shop is amazing. It's been years since I been to one. Ihe coconut jelly with mango is out of this world. The delicate coconut flavor with an incredibly rich, creamy, and velvety texture is out of this world. The fresh chunks of mango mixed in with the bouncy coconut jelly is just amazing. The location is modest at best. I've been to other stores where it's much nicer but the desserts are all exceptionally good regardless of the store. This is one of my favorite places for dessert, so good I would go out of my way just to get it.
The durian boba was pretty good. I could smell the durian from the cup. The durian is not super strong, to be expected from a boba that isn't like really expensive. But I liked the taste and mix of textures. I ordered on the ipad and sat at the table inside which is nice. Though I guess they're probably filled up quickly when the place is more busy.
Came here after a spicy dinner with my friends, and this place hit the not-too-sweet craving we were looking for! We ordered the mango coconut noodle and durian pancake to split among three, which was the perfect amount for us. There wasn't a ton of seating, but we were able to crowd around a standing/bar table situation. A5. Mango Coconut Noodle: 4.5/5 - the base was a mango slush on the icier side, with a mango ice cream scoop (very frozen), coconut noodles, and mango chunks. This was very refreshing and not-too-sweet. The coconut noodles paired well with the slush and added a bouncy, slightly chewy experience. In retrospect, I think I was more so craving the coconut jelly with a side of mango rather than a mango forward dessert, but this still hit the spot. C5. Durian Pancake: 5/5 - The pancake was a thin green crepe that wrapped around a stabilized cream with a small, but potent amount of durian at the center that permeated every bite. It was perfectly not too sweet, creamy, and fruity/vanilla-y in the way durian is. Would recommend for durian fans. Would come again when I'm in the area!
Authentic tasting Chinese dessert drinks. They seem to love mangos here, as most drinks here have mangos in it. So, the 3 stars is for 2 reasons. One, the slow service and number 2 the inability to customize drinks such as less sugar. The drink is super sweet and some things are premade like the bases. The coconut cream was cold and delicious but once again the mango and the rest of the drink was waaayyy too sweet for me. I'm sure it has more if not the same amount of sugar as a liter of Coca Cola.
I absolutely, truly love this place. I got their mango sago drink and mango mochi, and both were super high-quality, they did not skimp with any of the mango pulp or mango fruit pieces in the drink and it was so absolutely delicious. It tasted super fresh and was made with care and attention. The mango mochi were soft pillowy pieces of thin crepe skin filled with cream with a little bit of mango in the center. It was barely sweet, which is the Chinese way and I absolutely love that. I think its super rare to find a quality drink shop where the drink and snacks quality are so high when it comes to mango. I think a lot of boba places in the Bay Area use still raw, unripe mango pieces and also dilute their mango drinks with tons of ice and still charge premium prices for them for little pieces of mango, but here they do not skimp on quality or quantity, while maintaining affordable prices. The quality is so high and the prices are so affordable for what they provide. So absolutely delicious, I will be back here as often as I can.
Small shop with not a lot of seating, but most people just take it to-go anyway. I ordered through the kiosk both times visiting. It's kinda overwhelming, but using the search bar helps a lot! I got the Mango Crystal Jelly Cup and my friend got the Pomelo & Mango with Sago. Both were super refreshing and not overly sweet. Loved the mango smoothie base and the mango ice cream on top (more like sherbet texture). Mango chunks were a bit tart, but it's off-season so no biggie. Only complaint is the jelly was super long and slippery, makes it hard to scoop with their spoons. My friend's had coconut milk and pomelo in it, and she really liked it too!
I love this place! My husband and I ordered through Snackpass because it was our first time using the app, and I believe we got 5% off -- though I'm not entirely sure. We ordered the Passion Fruit Mango Icy and Mango & Coconut with Crystal Jelly, and we loved both drinks. The passion fruit mango is perfect for a hot day, especially after a heavy or oily meal -- it's so refreshing and really helps cleanse the palate. The mango & coconut is an amazing combination; the mango and crystal jelly balance out the richness of the coconut perfectly, creating a well-rounded, delicious drink that you have to try. The sweetness is just right -- not too sweet, which I really appreciate. The shop itself is quite small with limited seating, so it's more of a pick-up-and-go spot. The service was decent -- not over-the-top, but good enough for a quick stop. Parking can be a bit challenging, so keep that in mind when you visit.
The Hui Lau Shan in Berkeley offers desserts and refreshments, everything made of mango. It has been around since 1960. The interior is warm and friendly, with muted pastel pink walls. The ceiling also had a nice stream of lights shaped like umbrellas. We enjoyed the mango slush with sago, along with the mango mochi and jumbo mango chewy ball. The sweetness was light, coming from the drink and the mochis. The jumbo was soft, creamy and chewy. We will stop by again the next time we visit Berkeley.
So happy to see this Hong Kong dessert chain opening up here! Used their online system to order for self pick up and the process was quite smooth. I ordered up a storm and was quite happy with everything. My favorite items were: Sea Coconut Icy Combo and Mango Romance. The Sea Coconut Icy Combo had a nice small platter of fruits served with coconut icy. I loved the chewy pieces of sea coconut adding texture. Super refreshing to eat on a hot summer day! I liked the Mango Romance both for the variety and taste. It's nice to sample three different mini mango desserts with just a single order. My least favorite was the Durian Pancake. I love durian and was disappointed that the pancake was filled with cream and contained very little durian. I understand that durian is expensive but they put so little of it that I was literally just eating pancake with cream. Overall, this is a nice place to grab dessert with reasonable prices. I saw they had several deals available during Berkeley Restaurant Week, so I decided to check them out on 9/21. I wasn't aware that they existed, but they are located right next to U-Cha. Their BRW page was pretty minimalistic, so I went to their Facebook page to find their hours and other info such as the website to order. The checkout process seemed pretty straightforward and I appreciate being able to schedule a pickup time, but the thing I am uncertain about is whether I had a mistake in ordering, or if somehow something got messed up in the system during the process. I didn't think to double check the specific item numbers on my receipt before I went to go pick up the order, and did not look more thoroughly at the items until I got home. It turned out I had received two D5s (mango and mango jelly in mango juice) and a mango mochi (D1) which is not what I expected or intended - I had seen the Berkeley Restaurant Week section of their online menu and had thought I selected that to add to my cart, but instead I ended up with a different non-BRW combo. So I was pretty disappointed because I had been hoping to try their mango pudding and mango pancake rather than the mochi or getting two of the same item. At the time I reached out to VisitBerkeley, thinking that there was a discrepancy in the BRW menu vs. what was offered by the store, but was told that when the VisitBerkeley staff contacted Hui Lau Shan, that there was no error in the menu and that I must've made an error in ordering. I responded that I was pretty sure I ordered the right thing but that I didn't have "proof" since I hadn't taken a screenshot or video while I was placing the order online. VisitBerkeley said they could connect me with Hui Lau Shan so that I could get the items I wanted, and I replied saying yes please do, but have yet to receive follow-up on it. I'm not really expecting them to actually offer me the items I intended for free just because I can't prove I actually ordered the BRW combo. Review of the actual order I received: Mango mochi: I'm not a fan of the coconut bits, thought they were a bit of an odd addition to the mochi that didn't improve the flavor and would be better without it or with some other covering. The mochi's insides were fine. Mango and jelly in mango juice: This was pretty good, definitely did taste like actual mango and was quite sweet. Since it's fairly thick and didn't contain much (if any) ice, you get a decent amount of beverage rather than a high water ratio, which I appreciate. I gave them a few bonus points for having a cute bag and cups, actually kept a cup as a souvenir. I also appreciate the tape they put on the lids, although it didn't completely prevent a little from leaking when I was carrying the bag home. read more
These types of desserts are my jam. I grew up with them and could probably have them everyday if my metabolism allowed. It seems I'm not alone, as the spot was packed with a line out the door the weekend night we stopped by. My husband and I split the mango chewy ball ($6.50) and it was the perfect post-dinner sweet. Mangos tasted fresh, loved the puree, and the chewy balls were perfectly chewy. The space looks small, but there's actually a whole room if you make your way to the back. The room is a little weird and cramped though, and just not preferable given that there is no natural light there. You have to cross a hall to get there. I ordered a Regular Chewy Ball using their website, and it was super easy to order and set a pick up time. When I went to get my order, there were a few people waiting, but everyone was pretty good about social distancing (especially with the little markers on the floor!). Pick up was seamless and they even refrigerated my order so it didn't get warm! I loooooveeee mangoes, so, of course, I like any mango dessert. The chewy balls were tasty and the mango tasted SUPER fresh, but the bowl itself wasn't that big. Understandable though, considering the quality of the mango. Bonus points for the cute packaging too. Love mango everything and you will definitely get that here. I remember having this in HK and it was amazing. I was so happy when I heard they opened one in the Bay Area. I wanted to order everything but I had to contain myself. This location was right next to UC Berkeley so many college students. We ordered two mango sago desserts. One with coconut pudding and the other with Pamelo. The mango was so fresh, sweet and juicy. Just writing this review makes me want to go get some again. I LOOOVE MANGOES!!! This is my heaven. My friend introduced me to this place before shelter in place and I have been waiting for the day they opened their doors again! I went on 06/08/2020 and they now have a self order kiosk for easy ordering during shelter in place. I got my order for pickup and everything was packaged very nicely! You can't go wrong with anything here. All their desserts taste fresh. Their chewy balls are really good as well and I'd recommend getting some of these in your mango dessert! read more
There's a new soft opening of a little eatery called Hui Lau Shan west of UC Berkeley. This is a new Hong Kongese styled dessert spot specializing in mango recipes and other assorted ingredients like taro and durian. Their desserts are flavorful and fresh! They've got desserts including handmade mango, fruit and drinks (juices). I was feeling for a quick pick me up with their Red Dragon Fruit Icy which was surprisingly different and delicious! I'll come back with the intent of trying something new. Looks can be deceiving when entering as they're quite small in space but there's a plentiful amount of seating roomed just behind the store. In all, nice little dessert place with fresh fruit and a whole lot of flavors. iI've got my eye on their Mango & Mango Jelly in Mango Juice juice drink next! read more
I'm not sure why this place is so famous as I had never heard of the brand before but it appears to be very popular. We went on a night than was busy but no line out the door. There isn't much seating in the front but there is additional seating in the back in a sort of weird separate room. Both areas were full when we arrived but I think turnover is high since it doesn't take that long to eat the food. Tried the mango pomelo sago and it was ok. Too many big ice chunks for my liking and the mango wasn't as "fragrant" as it could be but of course it is winter time. There isn't much pomelo on it nor sago. I would say it's mostly ice, coconut milk, and mango. The taro glutinous rice was much more to my liking but I generally prefer warm soups to shaved ice stuff. The balls were nice and chewy and the soup was good and "glutinous" and not too sweet. My only complaint is that it's a pretty small bowl. It is a relatively unique offering in Berkeley and I will probably be back. read more
OMG IT'S HERE!!! HK mango dessert legend Hui Lau Shan is the latest Asian dessert chain to arrive in the downtown Berkeley area... and the one I've been most excited for! Desserts are a bit pricey for the portion and icy for the price, but where else can you reliably get that deep golden mango with every permutation of coconut sago?! You're in luck... 10 percent off with yelp check in. FOOD: mango pomelo sago bowl: lovely flavor combination, but the coconut milk ice mixture it sat in had beads of ice that really prevented me from enjoying the sago (ice chunk size is greater than sago size). This was topped by a scoop of mango sorbet that was good, but not life changing (on par with Trader Joe's). mango duo (mango, coconut ice, red bean) was my favorite of what we tried. A generous scoop of red bean at the bottom, icy coconut (boo), fresh mango (at $8 a pop, would have appreciated more), and a scoop of mango sorbet. mango pancake was yummy--pancake was tender, cream was the right cross of light and dairy dense, and mango was golden yellow and divine! Warning that mango and cream together isn't for everyone (it's barely for me). What's fun about HLS though is that there's something for everyone (so long as they like fruit)--mango anything is a crowd pleaser. For the braver/more Asian palates, there are also hot porridges (taro, sesame + tan yuen, durian) and a durian pancake that wafted through the back room :). SERVICE: kind cashiers (order at counter, take utensils, bus yourself) and buzzer system (!). They take credit card and and have adorable bags ($.25 ea) for to go. AMBIANCE: at first glance, it looks like the west coast version of the HK counterpart--small front area where you order at the counter. Fear not! Through a highly guided (via signage) twisting path, you arrive at a largeish back room (can seat 25, plus two high top standing tables). We had no trouble finding a table for two. I was so excited for another dessert place to open and Hui Lau Shan didn't disappoint! The best thing about this place has to be the drinks, like I would come back again and again for the drinks. We ordered the Aloe & Aloe Jelly in watermelon juice, Mango w/ coconut, and Pomelo & Mango. These were so so sooooo good, 10/10 recommend! Of course I had to try the desserts too, so I ordered the Mango Chewy Ball. It was decent, a lot smaller than I expected but full of mango-y goodness. Interior wise, this place looks really small once you walk in but there is extra seating in the back! It's a bit of the walk, you walk down the down and into a hall way (that seems to connect to all the other stores in the building), and there you'll see seating for Hui Lau Shan. Would I go back for the desserts? Hm, probably not. But I would definitely stop by during the summer for their drinks! read more
Omg yay!!! Finally got to try this location and it's just as good as I remembered. Thank you for opening during SIP! We got two drinks (D4 & D5) and a dessert (A1) to go and they were all really good. I could taste the fresh mango flavor and the sweetness was just right. I love mango so this place is like heaven for me lol! The only complaint about this place is the portion. The cup for the large drink wasn't that big; it was more like a regular sized milk tea. I was still craving for more after I finished my drink. Anyways, I'm so happy to have Hui Lau Shan in the Bay Area again. Their stuff is legit and it's so much better than all the copycats. read more

Small store, people mistaken this place to be a boba shop near by and skip it but their lost. I love mango, and this combo drink is pretty good. You can also get this in a bowl to eat as a dessert. Ordered the Mango Romance and the Mango and Pomelo sago with rice balls. OMG sooo good! I mean I can see why the wait was out the door. Fruits were sweet, rice balls were fresh, flavors had a good balance overall. Will def come back for more! AND there's Gyu Kaku next door. How convenient. read more

Another dessert place?!?! YAY I was excited to try this dessert place especially because I love mango. I ordered the mango romance which is a sample platter of most of the things they offer! Mango Romance - mangos were fresh and yummy - mango ice was very interesting, not much flavor - the jelly under the mango ice was very basic - the chewy balls were delicious and glutinous - the platter was a little underwhelming - nothing special stuck out for me Even with these complaints, I still think it is pretty delicious! The seating area was very unique and clean with many seats. I've heard that there are a lot more options and I will definitely be back to try more. The aesthetics are really clean and nice! I feel a little too nice giving a 4 stars based on my first experience but I believe it this dessert place and will be back. read more
Thought I teleported to HK as I walked towards the red Hui Lau Shan sign on Fulton. The front of the store was tiny and we weren't sure where to sit, but there was a bigger room in the back with long tables & benches. I liked the texture of the shaved ice. The mango was a bit tart but I personally prefer it over super sweet flavors. Didn't expect it to be exactly like what they have in HK but also not mind blowingly good. Don't come if you are looking for non-mango desserts; would choose Sweethoney for more variety and better presentation/taste instead. ~$7 not worth for a relatively small cup read more
Those of us who have wolfed down bowl after fabulous bowl of yummy mango goodness while triapsing the streets of Hong Kong truly rejoiced when we saw this was opening in Berkeley. Could it be? That cheap cold ultra mango-ey experience here in our neighborhood? Sans the cheap part, the menu largely honors what I feel is the true spirit of HLS - mango, mango and more mango. In every combination possible, and even in jumbo sized bowls for sharing. Today afternoon, I got the mango sago. It tasted great, I shared it with my husband and toddler, happy faces all around. Fast forward a couple of hours later, all of us are having upset stomachs. Considering this was the only thing all 3 of us consumed in common today, it's hard to think of anything else as the culprit. It says alot about how badly I want to love this place, that it still gets 2 stars from me after that! So, just a caution about getting the mango sago. Based on all the 5 star reviews on here (amongst whose ranks I had hoped to join) this probably is a one off thing. Maybe an off-sago-day? read more

My friend ordered Mango's Delight (I don't quite remember the name) and I ordered the Mango Romance. Mango's Delight comes with a base of black sticky rice topped with coconut shaved ice and mango cubes. Mango Romance consists of three small dishes: 1. A big mango mochi with several mango slices; 2. Mango cubes and mochi balls in mango syrup; 3. Mango ice cream with mango cubes and jelly. Overall both desserts tasted great, except that all the mango had a slight sour taste. :( Tips: 1. Soft opening until Valentine's Day. 2. While Hui Lau Shan specializes in mango desserts, they do have non-mango desserts. Check out their menu! 3. Maybe it's because of our timing (before Christmas), but while we were eating there, the employee started to do cleaning in the back, which was very loud and had a weird smell. The mango did not taste that great. But thanks for the service regardless. read more
Environment Passing by on a Tuesday night two weeks after grand opening and there's no wait, so we decided to check it out. I been an huge fan of Hui Lau Shan since I was a kid and excited to have mango dessert near by! Loving the new mango logo/figure, it's very cute. Store front is quite smaller than usual but new and clean, with a total of 10 seats inside. Service / Pricing Cashed is friendly and order comes out very fast. Packing is clean and food looks fresh. As for pricing, all mango dessert are $6.5, felt slightly high for the local area. There's also a set price on togo bags for 25cents (no other options), which feels over charged especially in Berkeley. Food There's not much drink and dessert selection (maybe due to new opening). It's serving the most classic mango dessert and drinks, which I like. Mango Chewy Ball $6.5 One of the most classic / must order. Mango is fresh and delicious and chewy ball goes perfectly with the mango base. Mango Mochi 6pieces / $9 There's no mango pieces inside??? It just got a little bit of mango jam?? in the center and overall taste not chewy or soft at all? Nothing like the tradition Hui Lau Shan and I'm very disappointed. read more

Hui Lau Shan is a mango lover's dream! If you love mango desserts and drinks, I definitely recommend Hui Lau Shan. It is a great place to get different mango desserts such as mochi, pancakes, etc. The freshness of the mangoes vary depending on the season, but they were super fresh when I visited. Definitely recommend if you love mango!!! read more
MY FAVORITE DESSERT IN BERKELEY. It's across from U-Cha and quite close to campus too! I'm someone who doesn't like desserts that are too sweet, and hates artificial mango flavoring but I love the Mango Pomelo Sago drink so so much I literally crave it all the time. It doesn't taste artificial at all and is a perfect blend of texture and drink. The mango mascot is truly so cute and all of their desserts are super refreshing! The interior is pretty small itself, not really suitable for big groups but you can probably picnic across the street on a glade. read more

My friend brought me to Hui Lau Shan for the first time and I was SO excited to try it! We got the Mango Delightful Trio, Mango Chewy Ball and finally at the end couldn't resist also getting the Mango Pancake to share. It was sooo delicious - I have been craving dessert that was not too sweet, and the mango was super fresh and really refreshing. The Mango Delightful Trio in particular was wonderful as the black pudding at the bottom has a great consistency mixed with the mango as well as the coconut flavors - so awesome. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend to try this new place!!! read more
I've been here 4 times throughout the past month, and each time I swear the mango ranges from sour to sweet, but overall it's really great for groups of people and there's seating in the back as well! I'd suggest A1- jumbo mango chewy ball and A4 (which is basically the A1 but smaller). I would say the A1 is a good size for 2-3 people and A4 is good for 1-2. A5 (mango coconut noodle) was really interesting because of the texture of the coconut noodles, but if you're a fan of coconut, I think you'll enjoy it. Another surprisingly good one was E1 (durian black glutinous rice) which sounds really weird, but was actually something I would get again (if you're in the mood for a warm "healthier" dessert option). read more

Love this spot! Everything is so good and literally loaded with mango! Mango mochi, mango drinks , mango desserts!! Can't really go wrong here unless you not a mango lover tbh! I highly recommend trying one of each to see what you like but I love the mochi and the dessert balls the most, because it taste so fresh and I love the chewiness of the dessert balls! read more
