The texture is springy and slippery, but compared to the mango, it didn't have much flavor. I was hoping for more coconut. The mango, the star of the dish, is very sweet and very fruity. I was amazed, how each dish had ripe mangos. Interesting part of this food experience was that there were various textures, but all taste like a really good ripe mango. Happy that Hui Lau Shan was able to survive the great COVID exodus of Berkeley because they're a rare treat! I don't know what black magic they practice to serve perfectly ripe and succulent mango every time and I don't care. I came when they first opened and got the Mango Chewy Ball which comes with this mango slushy/ice thing at the bottom, a generous number of mochi balls on top, a scoop of mango ice cream, and an equally generous number of the most perfect mango cubes you've ever eaten. Every time I've ordered since, I've gotten the Mango Chewy Ball and it is the same dish as from when they first opened and, for a dessert, super affordable! Honestly, it's about the same price as a boba these days. Boo to all the dessert cafes that charge as much as a full meal (if "U" know, you know). There is minimal seating indoors and it seems that most people take their food to go, even if it's frozen. I would definitely come in a smaller group or solo if you intend on dining in. Before COVID there was a seating area in the back but it looks like it's been blocked off since then. The food comes out very quickly and is kept in a freezer until you're ready to pick it up. They're on Snackpass and offer a free item if you order enough times. To preface, I'm not a huge mango fan; they're only in season for like 2 days out of the calendar year, so most of the time, I'll have mangos that are crunchy, mildly sweet, and super tart. But, somehow Hui Lau Shan's mangos are always the paragon of mangos: super soft and super sweet. My go-to is the Taro Black Glutinous Rice Porridge which comes with a sweet, viscous forbidden rice porridge base, and adorning the top are chunks of tender taro and sweetened rice balls. If comfort was food, this would be that food. I also recommend the Mango Chewy Ball, one of their signature Mango Ice Dishes. The Mango Chewy Ball comes with Tang Yuan-like mochi balls atop a sorbet-esque mango goop (trust me, it's more appetizing than it sounds). Another added plus is all the lewd jokes you'll make while eating this dessert. The service is always a 5/5 too. One thing that stood out to me was what the neighbor next door told me. We ordered to share with family and friends. The coconut pudding reminds me of the warm tofu dessert w/ sweet ginger sauce, but it's thicker and not sweet w/o sauce . The fresh mangoes and agar boba (?) gives it a good combo in flavor and textures. Love it as its not too sweet. We brought a mini cooler and brought the dessert home tland stored in fridge. However, the dessert it fresh to eat within the day as the mangoes gets brown even though it was sitting in the fridge and sealed in the container. Container is durable and can be recycle for other use in the home if you don't mind hoarding. Lol 2. Mango and coconut juice w/ aloe jelly. A very refreshing and light dessert drink. 3. Mango Crisp: Tastes like a cheesecake bite but hubby thinks its icecream. I think it may be sesame powder on it as it got a little messy eating with oir fingers. Very light yummy. Not sweet at all. It is also convenient that you can order online and just pick up (*cough Cupertino needs to do this). I always get D4 and the texture of this drink was icier compared to Cupertino. This is hands down one of my favorite dessert spots in Berkeley. It's located in a relative unassuming spot just off Bancroft and right next to U-Cha. It's walkable from campus and just a small walk away from the Bancroft bus stops! The storefront is cutely decorated with replicas of their desserts in the window and paper decorations all over the ceiling. There's minimal seating, which isn't a problem during the day but it can get a little busier at night so plan to get your desserts for takeout if you go at a later time. Service is quick and easy with the Snackpass app or the order kiosk in the front. The desserts never take more than 5 minutes to come out and they're always fresh! I'm a massive fan of the Pomelo and Mango with Sago (D3), but I've tried their mango and aloe drink as well. They're always so refreshing and delicious. There's only bar seating and a corner table, so it can easily fill up and you're stuck with no seating. There are quite a variety of mango-themed desserts and trust me, they're all amazing. The only downside is that, often, many of the desserts are sold out or they don't have ingredients for them. So there were some that I've been wanting to try, but every time I come into the shop, it's sold out. Regardless, the desserts they do have are amazing.
