Let me preface this by saying that I'm quite selective when it comes to raw fish. I can only speak for the poke here, but for me it lacked depth and flavor. I ordered the spicy mayo version, but it tasted watered down. No richness from mayo or sesame oil, no punch of the chile, only a slight onion flavor. A lot of sinew as well. You can kinda see it in the pictures. The mac salad was good, large portions, and friendly service. I will visit again, but I'll try something different. Went to Hula Hands for the first time for lunch. Luckily we got there a bit before the lunch rush was too out of control. The menu is quite large, as are the portions, even the small plates. We shared Katsu Chicken & Kalua Pig. The Katsu Chicken was super crispy but in the perfectly crispy sort of way! So piping hot that we couldn't eat it straight away. Kalua Pig was juicy and tender, just as it should be. They make the traditional Mac salad and steamed white rice which are just a staple to the Hawaiian plate lunches we're use to getting while on the island. They utilize iPads for taking orders and cashing out, which seemed to work great! We had a table of 7 with 5 checks between us and it worked well. My only reason for docking a star would be that they only had 2 servers for the whole restaurant and that included taking to-go orders over the phone and working as the cashier for those trying to pay. It made for some very slow service across the board. No refills on beverages of any kind and nobody checked back on us once we had our meal. Could've just been an off day, someone could've been sick... who knows. It's definitely worth getting takeout and I'd be willing to try the dine in option again. read more

Best restaurant in town! Don't know what to order? Ask the server. You will never leave there not satisfied. My favorites include: Hula Mein, Chicken Katsu plate, pulehu chicken and teri beef combo, pork chow mein and hawaiian combo with side of poke (raw fish salad ahi (yellow fin tuna) with hawaiian seasalt, seaweed, green onion and other ingredients) Dont be afraid to ask questions on dishes you are not familiar with. Meh. Everyone talks so highly of Hula Hands, so I was really looking foward to eating here. But I wasn't really impressed. The food was kinda boring. Pulled pork - boring, rice -boring, macaroni salad- boring. When I order a Lilikoi Margarita which was prominently advertised, they couldn't even figure out how to make it. It was, you guessed it- boring. And the ambiance is well, kinda dilapidated and dark. I definitely wasn't transported back to Hawaii. The while experience left me feeling very.... ambivalent. I'm writing this as I try not to bust a button off my pants. Up the street from Margaret Eagan Sullivan Park, which is beautiful BTW. We ordered 2 Regular plates: 2x chicken on one and 1x chicken/1x pig on the other. It was delicious. So much so my youngest daughter [4] wanted 3rds. A great sampling of some Hawaiian favorites! Their version of chicken teriyaki, is absolutely delicious! It's not like the sushi restaurant kind where there is an ooey-gooey sauce poured over top. No, this teriyaki has the marinate sauce cooked into the meat, making it tender and flavorful. The beef teriyaki is the same! I also enjoy the kalua pork but it's not as good as the teriyaki dishes. I have also tried their poke! It's good, but not as fresh as I would have liked. The fried chips made for a nice crunch to complement the softness of the fish. Prices are very reasonable for the mountain of food you get. Definitely worth every penny! Portions are very generous here. Most of the dishes are served with a mac salad and rice. The mac salad is very cream and an indulgence I will only eat on occasion, the rice is nice at sticky making it the perfect complement to the teriyaki. My only complaint is how dirty the place felt. It was cute how they incorporated a Hawaiian feel in Alaska but it could be kept up a bit better.... Especially the restrooms. read more

Hula Hands in Anchorage Alaska- Get you some Polynesian love on a plate!! Each "regular" size plate should comfortably feed two! (Shhhhh, it's a secret!) Hula Hands is a total GEM of a restaurant, which happens to be tucked into an unassuming building in Anchorage. It is sooooo UNLIKE the many many "Hawaiian BBQ" and "Poke" joints popping off everywhere on the planet, amounting to teriyaki and gristle on rice. Not here!! Dishes are innovative and multi-cultural. Warm and huge helpings of Polynesian comfort food. Staff is welcoming and friendly, which fits the culture of the dishes origins! Good people here! We rolled in and ordered multiple dishes, but I'm going to focus on this amazing combo plate. It consisted of Kalua Pig- Smoked pork shoulder that was shredded (not chopped) and moist and juicy and hopping with mild smokey and salty flavor. It's all about the natural pork juices. Don't kill it with sauce! Enjoy it as they deliver it to you! LOL. Next on the plate is Lau Lau. With a twist. This is basically a bundled edible treasure! The wrapper that forms the bundle is delicious luau leaf (taro leaves) that taste similar to spinach that "knows somebody." In the center of the bundle is corned beef! Crazy, right? It is very mild, not too salty. Not to be confused with that salt bomb corned beef at your fave NYC deli. It's a lightly salted brisket that gives that familiar flavor, without being a salt bomb. Then it takes another twist because it has coconut cream in and around the beef! Sounds odd...but it works in the mouth!! Delish! Next on the plate were several whole deep fried turkey tails! What? You eat those? Yes indeed! There is so much moist flavorful meat in those tails! The only think I would have preferred is if those had been slow braised instead of fried. Turkey tails are a NATURAL for the crock pot! So did I mention that the plate of food could break a truck scale?? They know how to pile on the goodness! I didn't even mention the included rice and salad sides! I think everyone who eats in walks out with the white take out boxes in hand! You basically get two meals out of a plate. How's that for a deal! Not sure what to order? The staff is very patient and kind and welcoming. Don't be shy to ask questions and maybe ask for a recommendation. Want smaller portions? Order the "half order" which is a full meal also, just not quite the size that would feed a massive island warrior! Try the pulehu! It's delicious! Smokey and seared! What's Pulehu?? Best Kalua pig in town! Have been going for years and without fail the food is consistent and delicious. As a special treat you can get turkey tails as a side! Macaroni salad is a great balance between sauce and noodles and the rice is just sticky enough. Encourage you to give it a try if you choose to have Hawaiian Cuisine. read more

The menu is vast expansion of Polynesian delights that will tickle your fancy and make you want to hula dance. No really - they were playing nonstop videos of reggae music. It was a nice touch. The menu features a bunch of combination options and pairing. A regular choose your own adventure of Hawaiian meats. Pulled pork, kalbi beef, even some Chow mein. I did the super combo with the katsu chicken and the terriyaki beef. It came with 2 good size rice scoops and some Mac salad. I also couldn't help but order the spicy tuna poke. I would definitely recommend the poke. It came with wonton chips and was my favorite part. The combo was also good, the katsu was deep fried to perfection. The beef was a little like beef jerky, but the Mac salad made up for it. The wifey did the pulled pork nachos. Instead of chips it was wonton chips. Well played hula hands, well played. Hula Hands has been a long time favorite of mine. I moved from Alaska in 2013 and have been craving Hula Hands ever since. I have tried a few places over the last few years but nothing comes close. I had the fortune to return to Alaska last week on a business trip from Colorado Springs. My first meal stop...Hula Hands! I grabbed the bbq chicken and kalua pork combo, two macs and one rice. I just sat there in silence and enjoyed the best Hawaiian BBQ I've ever had in a restaurant. The portion was so large I could have split it with someone else. But, that would not be the case today. I enjoyed every single bite. I was so miserable (in a good way) when I was done. Hula Hands is, without a doubt, the best Hawaiian BBQ in the city. I sent my husband to pick it up the food. About 15 minutes later I got a call from the restaurant that they ran out of food. By then my husband was at their parking lot. It's very disappointing because we were given wrong information. I'm a local boy from Hawaii, and I've tasted Hawaiian food at different areas around the main land and I can say I'm not impressed. By far this place is where it's at. Who would have known, at Anchorage. The Mac Salad is on point, because usually it's overcooked everywhere else I've eaten. I had their Hawaiian plate and it was pretty good, closest thing to home but no complaints here. They give you lomi salmon, not bad either but I feel that they can do better. They serve their Loco moco with a beef patty look and taste like from a previously frozen box, but their hamburger steak is hand made tho and it's pretty good. They also serve plantation ice tea, which surprised me because most places in Hawaii don't even attempt to serve that drink. It was alright. Their chocolate haupia was on point too, pretty close to the one at north shore in O'ahu. They play local jams. Hearing local jams well eating decent Hawaiian local food next to a Ti leaf plant, you just can't bet that. For a while it felt like I was home. We decided to take a chance on this place as we were looking for Hawaiian food. At first sight, you won't be impressed. As the cliche goes, don't judge a book by its cover. I had a spicy ahi tuna poke bowl, medium size. It was huge. Can't imagine how big the large would have been. Also had a spam musubi, a must at any Hawaiian restaurant. My food was delicious, the poke very spicy the way I like it. One co-worker also had poke and loved it, and the other co-worker had a traditional barbecued chicken platter and he also loved his. I knew it was a good spot when the local Airmen and Soldiers started rolling in from the nearby base. Will definitely go again. read more

I should say that I'm not an expert in this style of food, so I cannot say how "authentic" this may or may not be (I don't care about authenticity in food either, just deliciousity), but it is DAMN good, I was impressed. I got the Kalua PIg and the platter that came out looked almost exactly the same as it does at my favorite Hawaiian place in Portland (808), but it was cheaper! And, to be honest, the pork may have actually been slightly tastier, it was perfectly moist, not at all dry. The portions were generous and the pricing is great, and for Alaska (ever been to a Subway in Alaska? WTF), the pricing is INSANELY good. Small little place but packed with flavor. It's easy to miss so be sure to drive slowly when looking for this place. For some reason I thought I'd come here and expect to find pineapple rice and such dishes but I was wrong. They have lots of other dishes to choose from and most come with a side of rice and their macaroni salad. I must add their macaroni salad compliments their main dishes quite nicely. I think it would be nice to see more options besides the rice and macaroni salad. What I really liked is how friendly the waitress was and how affordable the food was. Two adults can pretty much eat for under $25 (and that is pretty awesome for Anchorage dining). Hula Hands is worth checking out and hopefully when you go the restaurant is not super smokey. read more

Horrible Service and Worse Management. **Please Beware** Having to grow up in Anchorage, the Hula Hands was my favorite Hawaiian/ Island Cuisine restaurant. During my vacation I decided to return with my family on a sunny weekday afternoon for lunch. After seated by a woman who looked like a busser, we requested a high chair for my nephew. The woman pointed to a corner in the restaurant and replied, "Over there." I was caught off guard by her response waited a for a moment and ultimately got the high chair myself moved it to our table. I ordered the Mini Plate Combo with Kalua Pig and Terkiyaki Chicken. The food was was I as remembered, until noticed a shiny metal object buried in the Kalua Pig half way through my meal. I submitted two photos of the half inch METAL SCREW, please notice that the plate and the table cloth are the same as the other user submitted pictures. When brought to the Waiter's attention, I requested a fully compensated bill. After checking with the kitchen they found screws from the Kalua Pig's pot were missing and the metal screw found on my plate was in fact from the pot. She also said the all the Kalua Pig served that day was cooked from the same pot. The only discount was $10 off the bill, even though others in my family had the Kalua Pig also. Disgusted with the service, management and the food, we paid remainder of the bill and left. read more
