One of our favorite nature excursions in PR. We had a quick scare when they opened up 15 minutes late, hoping they weren't closed for the day. We rented the kayaks and did the guided loop through the mangrove area. Super friendly staff with no problems using English. Having come early, we were the only kayakers out until we passed another group on our way back. I wish we had seen a few more critters on the trip, but overall an enjoyable time.

Nice signs throughout the bike/walking path

The…read morebioluminescence wasn't as impressive as we were hoping but we did appreciate it under the tarps and there were a couple times I had to pinch myself and say, "wow, we are kayaking through a rainforest at night!" Bioluminescent Bay Fajardo with the Glass Bottom Tour adventure group…read more Now I can put a check mark on something which claims to be only in 5 locations in the entire world, Puerto Rico boasting of 3 of them- the bioluminescent bay Point 1- and most important point: You should have at least a little bit of kayaking experience, good enough to know steering, its not a mandate no, but if u don't then U will definitely fall way behind the others. Point 2- You Will get wet. Wear clothes you are ok to wet. Don't carry anything important on you which you mind getting wet. There may be mosquitoes time to time, be mentally prepared. You will be knee deep in water, wear appropriate shoes, but you can leave the shoes in the car and go barefoot. Point 3- The darker the night, the better the luminescence. Note: In a certain area, the water illuminates when you dip your hand or anything else in it. Swimming is prohibited there but hands, legs, peddles are all ok. Thats what it is. And to think its all because of a certain plankton, a natural phenomenon, is what makes it all that special. A starlit sky above, a huge expanse of water in the dark where u can only hear one another, your kayaking partner beside you, your team with you, all kayaking, laughing, listening to the night sounds, or catching sight of a sleepy iguana- all these make it a fun experience. And gosh the guides ! They are so helpful and absolutely hilarious, all the while being motivated... if I completed anything and made it through, it was only because of them. Yes, it all exciting, adventurous and fun, but if in your head you have built up a magically lit pond (which, i had), then NO its not that at all. I want to stress on this again - the guides were absolutely wonderful people. They make sure everyone enjoy and keep the whole experience interactive while making sure all the precautions are followed. And if I can put a check mark its only because of they not giving up on us, and they waited, helped and made us not miss the experience however late we were. Captain Juan and Perla provided everything we needed--drinks, snacks, lunch... and their deep knowledge of the area was unmatched. None of us will ever forget the green turtle that suddenly came up to the surface beside us, or the eagle ray that glided by beneath our feet. The fishing was fun for everyone and Juan used his vast knowledge of the local waters to help our teenagers catch some amazing fish (which we later ate for dinner). Juan was more than a knowledgeable host... from him we learned about the history and the culture of PR, AND got some amazing tips on where to eat throughout the rest of our stay. Highly, highly recommended.

I recommend wearing water shoes as you'll have to walk through thigh deep water to get to the kayak. You want to plan your trip as close to a new moon as possible as you want to eliminate as much light as possible to really see the glow. Annoyingly there is a neighborhood above the lagoon with bright spotlights but facing the water way and lingering near the other side of the lagoon the bioluminescence is still very visible and a total blast. The guides even brought us a tiny jellyfish to observe and see how it glowed as it wiggled in our hands. I wouldn't even bother bringing your phone, I highly doubt you'd be able to capture the glow while holding still enough in a kayak. Navigating the mangroves was tricky because the guides blue lights were just bright enough the destroy our night vision and not see the low hanging branches. I would hope in the future that the guides would switch to red lights to make navigating in the low light easier.

WITHOUT A PADDLE…read more Kayaking during the day proving too easy?  How about kayaking at night...through a mangrove forest. As my wife and I planned our second trip to Puerto Rico, we agreed that a bio bay kayak tour should be on the list.  Only 5 biobays exist in the world, 3 of which are in PR (in Vieques, La Parguera, and here on the far northeast corner of the island).  There's a few kayaking tour companies in the area, each offering a similar bioluminescent excursion. Hang on, biolu-what?  I'll skip the TED talk--all you need to know is that a certain kind of marine plankton makes the water in extra salty lagoons glow blue.  It's the same science that gives jellyfish, fireflies, and deep-sea anglerfish their special ability to produce light. When we arrived around 8pm, tour guides gave our group of 15-20 life vests and provided instructions, like what to do if your ass falls out of the kayak.  Our goal was Laguna Grande (literally "big lagoon"), roughly 1 mile from our starting point on the shores of Fajardo. So......getting to Laguna Grande is not easy.  Along with a partner, you'll paddle your way through a narrow channel surrounded on all sides by thick mangroves, including an overhead canopy.  This is tricky during daylight hours, but at night the difficulty ramps up.  Keep in mind that visibility in these thick mangrove patches drops to near-zero at times. You might (probably will) have to avoid other kayak groups and (possibly) motorboats as you make your way to the lagoon, all while trying not to crash into the person in front of you, fall too far behind, or be knocked unconscious/impaled by low branches.  The outbound trip was not super chill, thankfully coming back was less stressful. Having an experienced partner is CRUCIAL. Bio bay tours are very much like whale watching, in that your visit is based almost entirely on luck.  A lot needs to go right in order to see magic stuff in the water, like the moon being in its 'new' phase (full moon casts too bright of a reflection) and no recent rainfall (rain comes down as fresh water, decreasing the lagoon's salinity). Under ideal circumstances, the microorganisms appear as florescent blue swirls when you move your hand/paddle through the water.  What we saw were closer to electrical 'sparks', still cool but not vibrant.  Capturing what little bio-presence we saw on camera would've been impossible, so we smartly kept our phones in the car. Oddly enough, mosquitos weren't a problem. * TL;DR * For me, this was more about the journey than the destination. If I'd hung all of my hopes on seeing tons of bioluminescent activity, I would've been disappointed.  I was focused more on trying not to capsize while also listening to the symphony of 'coqui' (the local island tree frog). It can be romantic with a spouse/partner, assuming they're not yelling at you the whole time. Wear comfy clothes (swim trunks aren't a bad idea) and be aware that parts of your outfit will be crunchy the next day, due to the lagoon water being twice as salty as the ocean. Mangroves play a critical role in the tropical ecosystem, but they stink! Would definitely recommend this to anyone over the age of 18; it's an awesome late-night adventure and one of the most unique things you can do while in Puerto Rico.

Montana Explora is the tour company located in Naguabo. Its location is slightly remote so I recommend looking it up in advance before you head over. You can also call/text the company's phone number, and they will text you their GPS coordinate. If you feel like you're driving to the middle of nowhere, you're heading the right direction. Once you get there, you'll see a small building with a bunch of life jackets/equipment on the outside. Our tour start time was 8:00am. We showed up early so we beat our guides there. They arrived few minutes after we did, and after they got the equipment together, we started around 8:30am. They do provide the equipment so all we had to bring was ourselves. I do recommend wearing canyoneering shoes or good hiking shoes because it is a slippery environment and the likelihood of falling is high in other shoes. Ha. Possibly long pants and long sleeve but not mandatory. Some of the trees have thorns, but they are rare. The company is family-owned and operated so the tour guides appear to care about the company greatly. Actually, our tour guides, named Luis and Gabriel, had a great attitude and seemed to enjoy their job a lot. They were extremely patient, friendly, and helpful. They are in very good shape physically and helped us the entire way, even if that required lowering us or offering a knee for us to step onto. They were very competent, and I felt very safe the whole time. I feel like the amount I paid for this experience was way less than the risk they took to keep us safe. I feel so indebted to them and forever grateful for them. This tour was highly based on our preferences and comfort level. We were able to add or subtract activities as we wanted. There was hiking, water sliding, zip lining, and more water slides. It was a lot of fun. I highly recommend this company and their tours. They do offer multiple tours so check them out!
