The team has the best interest of the animals in mind and really make sure they are comfortable and confident with the potential adopters and that it will end in success! The adoption rates are very affordable as well! We had a thorough meeting with our new dog and the handler, met with the adoption team, the behavior team and the medical team and all were very helpful explaining each step and took the time to address any questions we had to walk-through the complete process and history of the animal, as they know it. And the facility is just beautiful! My two friends recommended HSHC. After feeling pretty defeated with my pet search I decided to make the drive. Could not be happier with my experience. Staff was kind, helpful, educated, and efficient. The facility itself is new, clean, and organized. There was no annoyance by my 100 questions, just attentiveness and passion for their work. After listening to my hopes, they gave me a list of cats to view. Horace (shoutout) was so lovely but a little too young for me. Then they brought in Ella, surrendered at 14 just a week before I showed up. She's beautiful. She was shy, but I took a chance. They gave me all the paperwork and linked me to a vet. I was expecting to be there until closing. I was in and out within 2 hours: from looking to having Ella in hand ready to go home. I will be recommending HSHC in the future. read more

As documented by my spouse: Yesterday I was the product of what I saw as a scheme at the Hamilton County Humane Society. We became involved with a puppy that was dumped on a family member. This family member is already the owner of numerous dogs and thought it unwise to keep this animal over night. Thus my involvement. After numous disscussions with folks...it was my decision to start with the Hamilton County Humane Society...it was the closet option for us (3rd party uninvolved participant). Upon entering this facility I am helped immediately. I explain my situtation...that I have a puppy...how I got the puppy...and I was seeking someone to take the puppy. She was very positive and came back with a "sure...can I have your drivers liscense". She then reads my DL and ask if that information is current. I say yes. She then proceeds to copy my DL without any further question. After copying my DL she then gives it back to me and begins to explain she cannot help me. I do not live in there County. I respected that... and ask for the copy my DL... given we were not going to have a transaction. SHE REFUSED! She gave me a story about people dropping off animals and it was there policy to get IDs. This request for personal information for their needs was/is wrong (and sneaky). To use your position without notice to gain personal information from people will be discussed with others. The person I dealt with, had no plans of helping me nor did they discuss their intentions of requesting/using my identification. Now my personal information..without my approval...is being stored with the Hamilton County Humane Society!!! USER BEWARE!!! VERY CONCERNED CITIZEN!!! read more

We submitted an app from nky and the staff put our Bowser on hold for us, they were very accommodating. They made the experience very thorough and felt very comfortable. This was our first adult dog we adopted and we are so happy we did. We had a little behavior issues at first and the staff at the society helped us through the experience. Mr. Roger's always said, "look for the helpers" when life gets you down. Those are all the workers at this establishment. This is SUCH a nice humane society. We aren't 100% ready for a pet, but we went to go look at our options and had a blast. The woman at the counter was super friendly and led us to the cat area. You're allowed to freely walk around and the only rule was "don't put your fingers in the cages" (I think as a COVID guideline). The cages were nice and big, and there were a few open rooms for "play time." I felt great knowing that they get to leave their cages sometimes. Most of the cats were really new to the shelter, so I was also happy to see that people have been buying pets like there's no tomorrow. We walked through the dog section as well, which is always harder since they all start barking so loud when you walk by, and we felt bad riling them up. We were therefore only in their area briefly. Hamilton County is so lucky to have this world-class animal shelter in Fishers. HSHC recently moved from its Noblesville location to this brand-new (and expanded) facility in Fishers, and it's unbelievable. I started volunteering here a few months ago, and I've been impressed with HSHC from all angles - the volunteer orientation, the facility, the staff. While it's not ideal for animals to be at a shelter, this place is a top-notch place to stay until the cats and dogs find their "fur"ever homes. Please note if you are looking to adopt that the building doesn't open to the public until noon each day. You can browse the dog rooms and catteries, but you cannot pet or touch an animal until you've completed an application and been approved. Read all the policies online to be prepared! You can even submit an adoption application online. read more

Butchers. Via "Pet Angel" (just a tax shelter) I took 10 kittens to this shelter. Pet Angel rescinded their offer to have them get rabies shots and never responded again after this. The shelter considered them feral as they were terrified and admitted they stabbed them through the cage for they bled for many days after being "fixed". They all died within 2 weeks. 7 were black and 3 were grey and grey and white, one long haired. All beautiful.. These people are simply put butchers. Do not trust them. I am still heartbroken to this day, 15 years later. Bad, bad people. So is "Pet Angel". I'm sorry to be so brutally honest but I'll die with the real truth. read more

I literally cannot express how much negligence there is here! They treat and have treated many of my cats that i have adopted from here and the cats they currently have! They only really care about the dogs or animals that are "marketable". Roberto one of the cats I fostered was treated with negligence and left to rot and I mean rot. He was in respiratory distress and with bad skin. Instead of treating him like every other animal they were going to murder him. Same goes for my cay soy sauce. They were going to throw her outside all because of her kennel stress. They are constantly saying "no kill" but do they actually mean it? I don't think so. They kill animals that don't need to be all the time or give them a death sentence when they could treat them. They kill thousands of unborn kittens while saying "no kill". That's murder. I would give this place zero stars if I could. The ring leader here is also a real piece of cake because she treats everyone under her like shit. Just because the place looks nice on the outside doesn't mean that it is, the horrors that go on behind closed doors are appalling. I had the absolute worst experience not once, but twice, at HSHC. 4 years ago I made an appointment to see a dog only to get there and watch the dog being loaded into someone else's vehicle. This trip was even worse. I filled out the application on line, picked up my sister, and off we went for the redemption tour of HSHC. 2.5 hours later we were on our way home without Ruby. Having to return the next day with my 16 year old grandson for a meet and greet. 1.5 hours later we left with Ruby. 2 days later I was at Urgent care with Ruby. $1078.00 later I took Ruby home. 2 weeks later I took Ruby back for a follow up chest X-ray. $389.00 later I took Ruby home. She has pneumonia! The staff was rude, judgmental, condescending, and frankly could care less about the dogs. Gina did a follow up call about my experience. She begrudgingly refunded my adoption fee but didn't have any money to give me back for Ruby's Dr bills. Well neither did I. They took a great experience and made it horrible. The volunteers are the only knowledgeable and caring people we came across. I feel for the animals but I will let everyone know the kind of experience I had there. I let the rude treatment go because I wanted Ruby but the Dr bills were not what I planned. Gina was rude. She actually asked why I didn't bring Ruby there for treatment. Why would I? I really, really want to give 5 stars because my heart goes out to everyone working in animal rescue when there's a nationwide crisis, however they are just really slow. My daughter and I went to meet a cat and sat there for over an hour while people who came in after us were taken back for meet and greets. When I asked, they all looked confused and realized they had just been overlooking our file. We had already been approved to adopt but ended up walking out and going to a rescue instead. The animals are loved and well taken care of, they just need better organization and time management. read more

Me and my boyfriend went here after seeing a dog online that we wanted to meet. Upon arriving, everything was super organized and there were point people for each part of the process (i.e. welcome desk, adoption center, dog runs, cat rooms, dog play area). Everyone was super nice and knowledgeable about all the dogs in the facility! The facility itself was extremely clean, didn't smell or sound like a shelter and had classical music playing for the dogs. We easily found the dog we were looking for and quickly applied to adopt so we could meet her. The adoption process was super fast, and they allowed us to use our apartment contract to determine what breeds we could have since our apt complex's office was already closed. The total time to get approved was 10 minutes. The dog we wanted to see was put on hold for 24 hrs so we weren't able to see her that night. However, when we called back the next day to inquire if she was available, they remembered us and told us to drive over immediately! We met her, they answered all our questions and gave us pointers on what she may need in a household. We adopted her that weekend! With our adoption they gave us a free first health exam, free rabies, free first month health insurance, free microchip registration for a year and a goodie bag with food, toys and coupons! The adoption fee was way lower than a lot of the private shelters in the area. After about a week they even called to check in and see how she was doing. In between a 3 and 4 star. I appreciate the work they do here and the facility is very nice. However, I visited the shelter and looked online almost every day for 6 months and was unsuccessful in adopting a dog. We live in a townhome so we wanted a medium sized dog but a lot of the dogs they have here are pretty large and 90% are pitbulls. I know they are doing their best to save all the animals but oddly a lot of shelters seem to have a much larger variety of breeds. One day on a Saturday, my husband and I went at opening hour. We were some of the first ones there. I saw the perfect medium sized dog and we raced to the counter to sign up to meet her. I had already filled out the adoption paperwork prior to visiting, so we were just waiting for the staff to allow us to do the meet and greet. We waited 2 hours. Finally our name was called and they told us she was adopted. I was heartbroken because I was so sure she was ours and literally sat there for two hours excited to meet her. I was also extremely frustrated because no one told us there was someone ahead of us going to meet her? They tell you it's first come first serve but I swear I saw the family enter the shelter after we were already waiting. They also had another dog so I don't know if that's why they were picked over us. In the end and after months of looking for a dog to adopt, we ended up buying one from a breeder. It would have been nice to adopt instead of shop but the process was long and frustrating. read more

I've never had such an unnecessary interaction in my entire life. Not only have I been a huge advocate for this shelter over the years, but my family has donated time/money to their cause and adopted pets from there. I found a stray in a different county and took it home to my parent's house in Hamilton County where we live. Upon requesting that I drop the stray off at HSHC, I was asked to provide a bill with my name and address on it. After doing so, I was more specifically asked to provide a utility bill and/or mortgage payment. I shared that I'm not the homeowner, I just live here - so my name is not going to be on those bills. I was then rudely told that (1) I could not bring the stray to their shelter if I could not prove my address (even though I did) and (2) that I would need to call an animal control officer to pick them up instead, increasing the dog's chances of euthanasia. Shame on you HSHC!!! Stricter than the BMV and calling themselves and "open-admissions shelter to Hamilton County residents" when they actually just pick and choose who they'd like to treat equitably that day. read more

A great place! At first I was a bit put off by all the rings they make you jump through to even meet a dog. The application was VERY thorough and fairly time consuming (5-10 minutes). But after having spent more than a few afternoons there i know its because these people are passionate about the dogs and cats in their care. They are all so knowledgable about the animals and you can tell they're passionate about what they do. They were also much less expensive to adopt from than the Indy human society. I found my Furever friend here and couldn't be more happy with how everything worked out. I was given some food to get started lots of tips and dos&don'ts for bringing an adult dog home from a shelter. As well as a free wellness visit to any of their many supported vets of my choice. This place was very clean and organized. All staff very friendly and helpful. However the photos may be a little old as some pets grew. Generally still pretty good representation. The fees here are reasonable and they run specials. You have to be there just as the right time. If someone else wants the same pet you do & they got there and ask to see them before you, they could put them on hold even though you have the money & willing to take the pet right then and there. You can be rejected even if you would be willing to adopt the pet rather than put them on hold. Personally the "hold" system is flawed and really should just be removed. Other than that it is a great place. Pets are well taken care of. The dogs are walked often etc. I hope to still adopt from here. read more

This facility is amazing!!!!! The staff and volunteers are awesome. Everything is so new and clean!! All the fur babies have comfy beds and toys and bones. There are multiple toys for each dog. They have much more space than anywhere I've seen. They have an outer space and inner so depending on the location they can have privacy and/or can be outside. No bars!!!!!! It's all plexi glass. Looks more like a resort or super nice boarding facility. Not over crowded. There isn't a crazy echo from all the barking. As a result the animals didn't seem stressed or nervous. As much as I want to take every pup home I didn't feel sad that they were there. Same for the cats. They had their "living room" then an access to a "bathroom" (litter box) This made my heart so happy!! Adopt and support!!!!! read more

Love this place! Went online to look at cats to adopt. Saw Sage and was in love with her at first sight. Filled out the adoption papers in order to speed up the process. My husband and I walked in with high hopes. We weren't disappointed! So happy to meet Sage. She was just so sweet and gentle. We adopted her right away. Only have had her for a few days and she has already brought so much love into our home. Hamilton county Humane Society is just a great place. You can tell they love these animals. They are very conscientious about making sure their animals go to a good home. Plus, they are a no kill shelter! We highly recommend this shelter as a place to check out. read more

Beautiful building, I adopted my dog from there. However, I waited two hours to fill out our adoption papers then their computers conveniently went down when we were the last customers there. Came back the next day and had to wait another two-three hours to adopt. Was hoping we might move up in queue since we called and told them we were on our way, and since we were there for 5 hours the day before spending 99% of that day waiting. They were "short staffed" but I saw a new staff member every minute. They were nice and I appreciate all the work they do but that was just ridiculous. read more

My roommate and I came here to check out a dog she had been talking about nonstop the past two days since visiting him. Animal shelters always make me feel a little uneasy because of the overwhelming amount of furry friends that all want to be adopted but you can only choose one. I must say that this animal shelter was a great experience. The staff were very knowledgable and helpful. It did take about 10-15 minutes for someone from the back to bring up our now new furry roommate, but she was very apologetic and explained they were busy and didn't have enough staff on at the moment (welcome to nonprofit living!). They were very helpful in alerting us of any past information they knew and they also gave us a great kickstart to get Mr Brewster off to his best new home as possible. (Lots of coupons, free insurance, things of that sort.) It was a good experience and I would recommend this Humane Society for anyone looking for high quality, educated, and friendly staff while looking for a new furry family member! read more

We didn't end up adopting our dog from this human society but only because we found a dog to adopt elsewhere. I went to look for a dog twice and both visits were great. The dogs are really loved and the staff get to know the dogs. We had one dog picked out but rather than just letting us adopt it to get a dog out the door, one of the volunteers told us the dog had been aggressive to kids. We didn't believe it, the dog seemed so sweet! But she had a kid nearby walk in front of the cage and sure enough, the dog was NOT happy. I think she would have bit that kid if the gate hadn't been there. I'm expecting a baby in the fall, so that would have been awful had we adopted that particular dog. She suggested another dog that she knew was great with kids but unfortunately, someone was on their way to adopt that dog. The building is very clean for a place that houses dozens of poop machines. Anyone can surrender their pet to the shelter, and we witnessed that one of the days they were there. The staff was caring and accepted the dog, no questions asked. I'm sure it was hard for the lady to give up her dog, the last thing she needed was judgment from the staff so I was glad to see she got none. read more

Although going to a shelter can be very depressing, the dogs that are here are very loved. I encourage everyone to visit if you are looking for a dog. They are so patient and very honest about the temperament of the dogs. My husband and I visited there about 6 times before we found the dog for us. We could not be happier with our choice. We were able to bring our other dog to "visit" and see if the interaction between the two of them worked. The are a low kill shelter. I adopted my cat here three years ago. Recently she got out while at my parents and was missing for two days. I called several vets' offices and Marion and Hamilton County Humane Societies and both were helpful, filing missing pet alert and checking their recently brought in pets. We adopted our boy from this place almost two years ago and have been in love with him ever since! Previously, I have adopted a cat from this facility, and my parents have adopted another dog! The space itself is wonderful, fairly spacious, the dogs are in smaller spaces but they have room to walk around and a raised bed to lay on. It was very loud (probably because it is a very busy full place!!!). Customer service was alright. We waited for an hour or so after submitting paperwork, and then were able to meet the dogs we were interested in outside in a small yard. We also got to do a cat test and a dog test to confirm his reactions to them! They also allowed us to go on a small walk around the facility with him! All in all, the wait times are what makes it a little bit difficult. But can you blame them? While we were there (during an adoption event) several people surrendered animals so they were quite busy. I will definitely be supporting this place again if I move back to Hamilton Co. read more

The Hamilton Co shelter is amazing. The staff is mostly volunteers and they are very knowledgeable about all the animals we asked questions about. While me roommate and I were there we had a visit with an amazing dog named Orion. The staff member informed us that his previous foster family had young children and that Orion made a nipping action when a toddler walked over the large German Shepard while the dog was sleeping in the floor and a second nip attempt when an older child walked close to the dog while he was sleeping. No injuries were reported. The staff asked me lots of questions of how I would handle any behavioral issues and how I would train him if he needed training. They were upfront and honest and asking questions showed concern for the animal to have a great home that knows what to do. I don't know about you but if I'm sleeping and a child jumps over me I'd probably nip at it too! The only reason I did not take him home that day is because I live in an apartment and don't know how long I will be in this home. I can't make a ten year commitment (or more if the puppy has a long life) and can only foster at this time. Please make sure you notice the dates of the previous reviews. This organization is the best there is what is so great about them everyone that works there are true animal lovers. I have adopted 2 cats from there and they interview you first then bring the animal in and watch how the both of you interact then they have a animal therapist come and talk to you and explain any attitude issues they think the animal has.They are also a true "no kill" facility and that is total awesome also read more

This shelter is very unique -- more like a boarding facility than a shelter which makes it soo much easier to walk through. It's clean and you know the animals are safe and well taken care of. The staff was very busy but was very helpful! When I asked questions they were able to match me up with the perfect dog. I know they try really hard to save all dogs and cats, too - regardless of injuries, heartworm, etc. They really do care! read more

By far the worst shelter I have been too. I have tried to adopt two separate dogs from this shelter and was told I was "inexperienced". I currently have a lab who came home with several behavior problems. We have figured out she has anxiety and I have spent hours working with her. The dog I was interested in adopting is timid and has a tendency to bite children when nervous. I was told I wouldn't be a good fit for the dog. I do not have children and have a great deal of experience with behavior issues with dogs. I fully support adopting animals but I have to wonder what their placement rate is at this shelter. We watched two others get turned down in front of us in line because of inexperience. How does one gain experience if they are given no chance to learn or be working with? . This shelter needs a new set of management and plan. The staff are not friendly and under qualified. I have zero intentions of returning and I recommend anyone looking for a dog goes to a different shelter. read more

I attempted three visits and all three were enough to make my boyfriend and I choose to adopt our new furry friend elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I support what they are doing here but it's really true that customer service go a long way. Two of the three visits were just so-so. Staff members were quick to persuade us into becoming interested in dogs that we were not asking questions about. If I wanted XYZ dog, I would have inquired about it. The third and final straw occurred last week. We had seen a dog we were interested in adopting on their website. Upon entering the facility, one staff member was in a loud verbal argument with another at the front desk. This same staff member took her sweet time to enter our information into the computer prior to allowing us to visit the dog. She chatted about her son and personal problems to a few people and just generally rubbed me the wrong way. Finally over an hour later, she calls us over to ask a few question and let us know they look up your home ownership to "make sure you are who you say you are!" WTF? How Big Brother of you. Not sure the need to stalk me before I even agree to adopt. Finally, we were allowed in a room with a volunteer who sits with you awkwardly as you engage with the animal you are interested in adopting. You can't even go outside with them...weird. I understand the need to make sure people are legit, good-hearted folks who aren't going to do terrible things to their adopted pets but my experience here was enough to turn me away. Needless to say, we were encouraged by our friends to adopt from another Humane Society. read more
