I moved to Kelso in July 2021. For two years, I saw a small cat across the street many times. She would often be on the sidewalk near an intersection where cars speed past way too fast. I would cringe every time a car went by... Twelve months ago, she came across the street to check me out while I was outside my back door. She was very shy and scared, but I could see she was also very hungry and thin. She was asking me for help, I could tell. Over a period of several weeks, I gained her trust and was feeding her daily outside. We became very close; she was very, very sweet. Winter was coming, so I built her a shelter out of a large 2x2x3 foot plastic storage bin with a lid. I insulated the interior walls, and I even put an electric heating pad inside. (there just happened to be an electric outlet in the outside wall, right next to the bin.) I placed her food and water bowls inside, and she got comfortable inside pretty quickly. When she wasn't inside it, she would be perched on top when I came out to feed her and visit. She seemed relieved to have a safe place to be, and a friend to give her love. When she looked up at me with her one yellow eye and one brown eye, we really started to bond. At some point, she stopped wanting to go into the shelter. I thought maybe some other animal had gone in and left its scent. The freezing temperatures were fast approaching, so I decided to adopt her and bring her inside to live. Even though I was feeding her a lot of food, she was still thin, and she was a pretty small adult kitty to begin with; I was afraid she might freeze to death otherwise. I already had two cats; they all seemed to get along fine after a few weeks went by. After a few months, everything was calm and casual among them. The two big boys like to wrestle with each other sometimes; maybe two or three times a week they get in the mood. The little girl though, who I named 'Moonpie', had no desire to participate; she was happy just to watch. A whole year went by, and Moonpie and I had a strong bond, along with the two boys. About ten days ago, Moonpie's cheek started to swell up. I was worried, because that usually indicates a tooth problem. I know that can involve X-rays, blood tests, antibiotics, tooth extraction under anesthetic, and a special medicinal diet... All of that can cost $1,000 or more I would estimate, and I just didn't have the money to deal with it. Someone suggested taking Moonpie to the Longview Humane Society to see if they could help. I called, and they said they had people who could treat her for free, even if it was a bad tooth. I took her in, and they told me that if Moonpie could be saved, I could have her back. They called me the next morning, and I was very happy to hear that my little kitty had no tooth problems at all, just an abscess that needed to be drained. They said she would be fine, and I could come get her after they treated her with antibiotics for three days. While Moonpie was there, I spent the whole time thinking how I would donate money to the organization when I could in the near future, because I was so grateful that they were willing to help me for free; I just didn't have any money at the time of the emergency. After the weekend and the Columbus Day holiday, I was ready to go pick up Moonpie; I was really looking forward to seeing her gentle little face, without the swollen cheek. I called on Tuesday to check the status. I spoke to Dreama, (or Drima?) who was the person who received the cat days before. To my shock, she told that Moonpie had been given to someone else and she now had a new home, and I couldn't have her back. I told her how wrong this situation was, and it should NOT be happening. She argued with me, and put words in my mouth that I never said; She said that I had told her before that I didn't want Moonpie back, which was utter bullshit. I suspect what happened was, someone in the office there fell in love with her sweet little face just as I had, so they just decided to take her for themself. Dreama, this isn't over. read more

Adopted our girl Kaja here back in March 2021, she was named Lola when we got her. She was found on a Highway and they had her for about a month. They obviously took care of her, she was so attached to the lady that showed her to us. She quickly became my best friend. Thank you so much! I love her to death read more

Lovely clean shelter with compassionate people giving their all to provide the best care for the unwanted animals in Cowlitz County. We brought in a stay dog last week and they were exceptionally sweet with her. Today we adopted a Momma cat and our experience was very pleasant. It breaks my heart that people will bash an animal shelter and it's employees before experiencing the ins and outs of working in one. I'm grateful for those that have the heart and compassion to do this for a living. It's a tough job. Thank you Cowlitz Humane Society for your dedication, compassion and kindness. And for those of you who refer to "shelters" as "the pound", you could use some compassion and empathy yourselves. And if you truly do have a problem with an animal shelter, volunteer, see for yourself just how hard these folks work and how much love they offer the animals in their care. *stepping off my soapbox now = You're welcome. read more

I went to renew my dog's license several times in December and now in January. $15 supposedly. They changed their hours - not online, obviously - to -12-5 or 10-5. I made it to the "shelter" in December several times only to find the doors locked with signs saying they were going to start issuing licenses on January 6th. NO LATE FEES WILL BE IMPOSED if paid by Jan 31. So it wouldn't be $30. So I made it in today - the INhumane society (lol) of Cowlitz County is now owned by SW WA Humane (lol) society and NOW charges $30 for a dog license. "You aren't getting any late fees." This is total BS! It's hard enough to pay for a dog, a SINGLE dog, get shots and vaccines ($225/visit) and get them spayed ($700) and train them and feed them. Now this? Fees go up with NO online notice and LIES being spread by staff in December by 100%!!!! Is THAT a cost of living increase? I am not paying this. I can't. I guess only rich people can have dogs in Cowlitz County. Unreal. This is a poor area and now you are forcing people to give up their dogs or have them go unlicensed? Wow. INhumane Gang of Thieves who don't give a damn what anyone has to go through to keep a dog. read more

While there are employees there that genuinely care about the animals at the shelter, the leadership is lacking. The kennel manager has no formal training around dog behavior and makes detrimental decisions that affect the ability of the dogs to be adopted. If the directors really cared and wanted to get the animals adopted they would get a person who is trained in dog behavior and organize obedience training for the dogs. Instead, they rely on the personal experience of an ex-volunteer that got the job because the director likes her, not because she is actually qualified. despite losing many passionate volunteers and employees since hiring her and making her the kennel manager in addition to receiving numerous complaint about her, they have made no changes. read more

I bought a home in 2019, it was a joyous moment in my life. I wanted an animal to share it with. I went down to this Humane Society twice so far, and I am determined to get a animal from there because I hear there suffering when I visisted. Anyways, they won't give me one. I own a home, its fenced, My cat passed away at 16 years and he never lacked, and I took him to the vet. I am infinitum pissed at these teenage gatekeepers to my future companion. Staff seemed nice.. but they avoided calling me back and getting my cat in for treatment after telling them he opened his incision the day after his surgery. They refused my cat!!! Not to mention my cat came back EXTREMELY skittish!!!!!!!! I was very concerned and at this point I won't be taking any of my animals there ever again! read more

They really need to retrain their staff! Was here a few weeks back and a staff member decided to take a very aggressive dog out to walk or something and said dog overpowered the staff member and bit my son! Breaking the skin and all. Now my son is afraid of all dogs!! Shame on you all!!! read more

I've adopted from here and my impression is that the staff at the Humane Society in Longview are wonderful with the animals. The Kitty Corner is well kept and I've gone there just to look in the window, without an appointment (to observe the kitties before I decide on one). A friend of mine lost his dog, turns out the neighbor who found him called the Humane Society and the dog was re-united with my friend. The Society provides so many important services, I feel good about the adoption fee. I plan to get another cat from them soon! read more

Some found my dog wondering on my street and instead of holding him for me they took him to the humane society. They charged me $100 to get him back, My girls got there a few min before they closed and the worker told them to come back when they open the next day and they would lower the fee for us, as I am a single mother with a low income. My daughters go there the next day, talk with a different woman and she is being a B**ch to them and doesn't lower fee, then proceeds to tell them if we can not show proof oh his rabies shot within three days they would write us a ticket. To thing this company asks for donations and then turns around and charges outrageous prices to get a pet back to its family. If my oldest son wasn't able to pay the fee we would have lost our pet to this company that is supposed to help the community. I am outraged. They said its a $50 fee for impound, they could have charged $15 for a boarding fee, someone did bring in my dog, he was not caught by pet control officer or abandoned by us. It is sad to think they can't do anything for low income families and for children to possibly lose a pet because they can't afford the outrageous fees. I would think the part of donations should go to this... My dog was there less than 5 hours when they informed my daughter it would be $100 then told her to come back the next day. I will never go there or donate money to them. They are a disgrace to my city! read more

I went to the Cowlitz County Humane Society today and was bullied and threatened and lied to. I am shocked that the employees were so cold and mean. I only wanted to have a dog scanned for a microchip so I could find his owner and bring it home. I will never support the Humane Society again. read more
