It was quite disappointing and nowhere near worth the cost. For example, their seafood SPECIAL that evening consisted of 1 scallop, 4 small shrimp and 6 clams over a bed of Barilla penne in a mediocre -- at best -- sauce. In town on business, I figured I'd treat myself my last evening in Eureka. Yelp is always my go to and is what led me to Humboldt Bay Bistro, along with the strong recommendation from my chauffeur :-) I started off with a nice glass of wine and bread while I was torn between ordering the duck or pasta. Duck won! The H.B.B. Duck was delicious and instead of the rice and seasoned vegetables, I thought the whipped potatoes and bacon-braised greens would accompany it better. Boy was I on the money!!! Needless to say my meal and overall experience was amazing!!! If I ever return to Eureka, Humboldt Bay Bistro will definitely be graced with my presence! The French onion soup tasted like rubber with onions, the clam chowder tasted like the oceans armpit, and the duck tasted like licking the inside of a ziplock back stored in a ziplock bag... There is no other place I could've wanted to celebrate our first wedding anniversary than at Humboldt Bay Bistro! I called to make what I thought was a reservation and was quickly returned with a phone call from the chef/owner with the option of a prix fixe menu. I feel horrible for not remembering if I spoke to Bret or Evan... They worked with me and gave me options for my semi-vegetarian wife and me who loves meat. I was emailed a menu for confirmation that included both a vegetarian option and one with meat (seafood). For the actual experience: we arrived a bit early planning to have a drink at the bar. Lucky for us, our table was already ready! We each enjoyed a drink at the table (I had a mule of some sort and Wife had an aphrodisiac :) drink) before our delicious first course - salad with Humboldt Fog and raspberry vinaigrette. For those of you who haven't had the privilege of tasting Humboldt Fog cheese, do yourself the favor and get some! It is like none other. Next, we had a wild mushroom tower with sherry cream sauce. It was sliced mushrooms cooked down in a sherry cream sauce spread over (what I believe to be) large crispy wonton chips. My only complaint about the entire dinner was that this course was too salty. Other than the salt, this course was delicious. This course was followed up with her stuffed zucchini and tomato basil sauce, and my pan seared halibut with garlic and asparagus risotto with beurre blanc. I almost had to fight my wife off of my plate to enjoy her own plate. Both were absolutely delicious. The halibut was slightly dry and overcooked, but the sauce and overall flavors were incredible. Next, we enjoyed spinach ravioli with pesto cream sauce, and prawns with golden miso. Very different sides of the food spectrum, yet both were so satisfying and tasty!! I was so stuffed by this point that I only had one-maybe two prawns. The golden miso sauce was divine! Last, we had local organic apple bread pudding with bourbon caramel a la mode with 2 scoops of vanilla (bean possibly?) ice cream. I'm not a fan of cooked, soft fruits, but the bread pudding was decadent. I brought mine home for my dad (a bread pudding connoisseur if you will) and he said it's one of the best he's ever had. I wish I could tell you that last finite detail about the ice cream, but the wine pairing got us good... Speaking of, that is one detail I cannot leave out! Each of our courses was thoughtfully and perfectly paired with wine. The salad was with a wonderful sparkling wine. Courses 2-4 were paired with whites and reds accordingly. Dessert was paired with one of the best ports I have ever had. I'm a huge fan of port, so the surprise itself of seeing it on the table was amazing. Then to taste it... I melted. Wife didn't know I had arranged the wine pairing and I was expecting just a taster/half pour with each course. No... no.... We each got very generous full pours with each course! Trust me, I am NOT complaining about that! The entire staff and especially our server Annie were all amazing. Annie (sorry if I'm not spelling it correctly) was friendly, personable, fun and funny. The hostess greeted us immediately with a smile and friendly welcome. Like I said, we arrived early expecting to first sit at the bar. When I gave her my name for the reservation, she sincerely congratulated us on our anniversary as she walked us to our table. Do NOT go! It is bizarre that they offer an exclusive Thanksgiving menu but the regular menu is not available on Thanksgiving day. The menu is way over priced, twice expensive as the regular menu. I ordered prime rib (king). The first one is way under cooked. Red liquid flowing everywhere. They told me that the rib is cut off from a large rack, and replaced it with another one a bit towards the rear. Still, under cooked, COLD in the middle. While visiting family in Mckinleyville my wife and I came across the add for this place on Yelp. After reading some of the other reviews we decided to go for our 26th anniversary. Definitely not disappointed. Our server Mickey was very professional and had a good knowledge of the menu items. Filet mignon was perfectly seasoned and prepared. Chocolate banana cake ( which was recommended) was a perfect finish to our meal. Beautiful setting overlooking the bay. My fiancé and I were so underwhelmed with our experience here. It was disappointing because we paid a pretty penny for a dinner that was less than enjoyable. We visited town from Redding for Labor Day weekend and secured reservations for dinner right when the sun would be setting so we could watch it. Unfortunately we were sat in this weird hallway where we couldn't see the sunset or any other people for that matter. It was a bummer but not a deal breaker. It took about ten minutes to be seated although we had reservations, we didn't mind the wait. We got to our seats and our waitress came and introduced herself, took our drink orders, and was off! We didn't get our drinks for about 15 minutes which was weird but again...we're fairly patient. Eventually she brought out a tray with oil, vinegar, and some bread on it. The bread was incredibly stale. Not just a little bit but the bread was hard as a rock. We ordered our meals after waiting another 15 minutes for our waitress to return. I ordered chicken Marsala and my fiancé ordered the filet. IT TOOK AN HOUR TO GET OUR FOOD. Not an hour from the time we arrived- but an hour AFTER all the waiting we had already done. Our waitress came out about 50 minutes into our waiting and assured us the food was almost done. By the way- during this hour no one came by to see if we needed refills on our drinks. Eventually the food came out and it was cold. Everything was soggy and looked/ tasted like it had been sitting for 30 minutes before being served. The chicken was cold, the steak was cold, the vegetables that came with the Marsala weren't cooked at all. Our waitress disappeared again, we were probably done with our food ten minutes before anyone came to offer us dessert or our bill. I wanted to order dessert but didn't want to risk having to wait another hour to receive it and since our food was awful I didn't want to pay for another course that might be just as bad as the first two. We tried coming here around 7:45pm on a Thursday and we couldn't get a table for our party of 6 without a reservation. The host was very friendly and helped us make a reservation for Friday night so we could come back. We started off with calamari which was worth the wait. I tried my fiancé's soup of the day (green curry) which was also good. My father in law ordered the wilted spinach salad which I got to try and it was phenomenal. I got to have one each of the grilled shrimp tacos and the battered fish tacos. The shrimp taco was just ok, but the battered fish taco was amazing. I didn't get to try the clam chowder but multiple people at my table did and they enjoyed it. For dessert we ordered the fried ice cream and cheesecake. The cheesecake wasn't as sweet as I prefer it but it wasn't bad. I liked the fried ice cream better. My girlfriend and I decided at the last minute to meet for drinks and some light appetizers. We decided to come to Humboldt Bay Bistro, as neither of us have been here. We were seated in the front private corner with a magnificent view of the bay. Our server, Melanie greeted us promptly. She was absolutely amazing! She ran through the specials and answered all of our questions about drinks and menu items. For drinks, we had the Love Potion and (I can't remember the name of the second drink, it had lavender in it.) Melanie was more than willing to help me out to get the drink to my tastes and added a little more lavender to it. Then it was perfection! For food, altogether we had the soup of the day - cream of mushroom, crab cakes, and sides of whipped potatoes, Brussels sprouts and risotto. Everything tastes ridiculously delicious. read more

I think we've found our new favorite dinner place! All of the food was fantastic, the service was great and we had a beautiful view of the bay. Everything from start to finish was awesome. Their clam chowder was the best on the north coast. We ordered their special, which was their filet mignon burger with fries. Delicious! And for our other entree, we had the lobster with a side of mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. All I can say is WOW! Huge lobster (great deal for the price) and the sides were great too. This place has been open for about a year, but this was our first time and we would've never found it if it wasn't for the NCJ app. Driving to this place is "interesting ". My husband and I ate here last night and WOW! We have plenty of great food around us back home in the bay area and still this meal was the best thing I've eaten in quite a while! We had the 6 oyster (cooked) with garlic butter appetizer. Very good! I ordered the cajun alfredo and I added shrimp and scallops. It was seriously delicious!!!! My husband ordered one of their specials which was a spicy red sauce pasta with clams and salmon. He was also extremely happy with his dish. We ordered the deep fried strawberry ice cream and short cake dessert as well as the creme brûlée. Both were good but I can't say it's the best cream brûlée Ive ever had. He had a beer and I had a red wine. I can't recall the wine but it was the only red blend on the menu. I did not care for the wine and wouldn't order it again. It was old or oaky tasting. Also they don't have a liqueur license so the only make "herbal sake mixed drinks" that does not appeal to me at all.. Lastly the service, I don't recall her name but our server said she was new and she had dreaded hair up in a large bun. She was very nice and attentive Oh and it right there by the water with plenty of water view. A very nice serene setting. All in all this was a great dinning experience and I hope we can come back before we leave town. Some reviews complain of pricing. But I think they're just being cheap. Sorry for the brutal honesty. But we had an appetizer, 2 alcoholic beverages, 2 pastas one with added shrimp and added scallops, and 2 desserts with great service... and paid $106 not including tip. I was impressed with this place. It was small, but it was intimate without being suffocating; the food was very good, and I liked the specials the offered. The wine selection could be more robust, and they don't have a proper bar, but it is what it is. It was kind of at a last minute that we went here, mostly because I just really wanted to try it. We made reservations, but they didn't seem necessary for the night. There was live music, that was nice. I had the pasta, and my date had steak. Both were good. Our server was young and slightly inexperienced, but it wasn't an issue. Overall good experience, and i would recommend this as a place to try in Humboldt.
