Larrupin is hands down my favorite restaurant in Humboldt County. I grew up celebrating special milestones here, and now I make it a point to dine here every time I'm back in town visiting family. They always have delicious daily specials, and this visit was no exception. My husband ordered the special filet and shrimp, while I went with the half-and-half. We also shared local oysters for the table and, of course, their signature Larrupin charcuterie board. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the service was excellent. Larrupin Cafe is the best restaurant in Humboldt county and it isn't even close. The drive out to Trinidad is always beautiful and then you arrive at the gorgeous restaurant with its lovely landscaping. You can sit inside (upstairs or downstairs) or outside. There is occasionally a jazz combo outside which can be enticing. Trinidad can be cool, so even with the space heaters, we usually choose to sit inside where the art decor is excellent and interesting. Yes, that really is a Dale Chihuly glass chandelier as you head up the stairs! Service is professional and understated. The servers know the food well and are present without being intrusive. I've been coming here for over 30 years and never had a bad server. Be sure to let them know if you're celebrating an event and they'll make your evening extra special. The food is always outstanding. The appetizer board included with your meal is such a treat of local small bites and hearty dark bread. Let your server know if you want the appetizer board to be vegetarian. Vegetarians and vegans have plenty of delicious entree options that go far beyond the usual 'pasta with vegetables' option such as the Spanakopita or the stuffed bell pepper over portobello mushroom. Meat eaters can enjoy the wide range of special barbecue options, the oysters, or fresh fish. Save room for one of their amazing desserts. We often have the Goat Cheese Coeur á la Crème which always feels decadent and light at the same time. The flourless chocolate cake is simply decadent (and not light) but oh-so-good. Larrupin Cafe is not inexpensive, but it offers great value since the service, ambiance, and food make it well worth the splurge. read more

And we are already thinking of all the amazing choices we haven't yet tried for next time. 1st night 1/2&1/2 ribs brisket and snapper. 2nd night steel head and chicken cordon Bleu. The side salad fresh and delicious, the charcuterie board is always wonderful too. Desserts were the goat cheese with chocolate/ raspberry (Devine), lemon tart, flourless chocolate cake- which would have been perfect with a layer of the lemon cream topping from the tart. We got to enjoy a rehearsal dinner here for my buddy and his bride and their family. The restaurant was very intimate with outside tables and greenery. We were sat quickly and they had carpet on the tables with a glass cover over them which added a unique level and fit the overall atmosphere of the restaurant. The food was exceptional and I loved the smoked salmon bites and the steak. Not a cafe! This is fine dining in the middle of nowhere! After enjoying the filet mignon and the chicken cordon bleu the first night, we came back the next night to try the fish and the Cajun prawns. All were rich and delicious. Portions are huge (even if you do the split plate option) and we overheard other customers getting desserts wrapped to go. Large and well-curated wine list, and some beers but no cocktails. The remote location means your cell phone will have zero bars as well, so enjoy the romantic ambiance with your company. If you're seated downstairs, pop up the stairs to see the amazing Dale Chihuly glass sculpture. read more

This is definitely priced for special event dining, IMHO. My husband and I had an early dinner here for our 16th Anniversary. It was amazing! He had the filet mignon and I had the blackened steelhead - we shared bites of each others We enjoyed wine and prosecco. They asked if we were celebrating anything and then brought us the house special dessert which is in the shape of a heart. We also ordered a dessert that was similar to pecan pie only more decadent. We will definitely keep this on our list of wonderful, locally sourced food restaurants to visit again. Hope to go in the summer for their outdoor seating. I've been hearing great things for years, my first visit here was a bit less than expected. Service did not get off to a great start. The server was very slow at getting to our table. I suspect it was the loud gentleman seated at the table behind us, but I digress. Once the server came over, we were off to the races. We started with the carpaccio, roasted garlic, and portobello appetizers. Delicious! I would highly recommend each one. The board that is served complimentary was delicious as well. I enjoyed a glass of the Inkblot Cab Franc with my NY Sirloin fully dressed. I love a good steak, and this one was right up there! We didn't have room for dessert but ordered the signature dessert to go. Sadly, I never tried the dessert before I left for my flight the next morning, but I'm sure my brother and his wife enjoyed it. It just gives me a good excuse to go back. read more

Really pretty restaurant but my partner and I were confused about the East Asian theme given that the only dish that could pass as Asian on the menu are tofu kabobs...which are described as having "oriental seasonings"? Pretty good service but the food was really underwhelming for a fine dining experience. Charcuterie board looked visually appealing but was depressing flavor-wise. For a board that had pâté, bread, goat cheese, etc., the best things on it were sadly the sliced apples and cheese. The two slices of cucumber on the board just felt out of place. Appetizer portions for the Claudia's Rosemary Roasted Garlic were very small for a $16 dish, but luckily tasted great. I got the Smoked Beef Brisket for $35 expecting tender, flavorful brisket but it was unfortunately very dry. The sauce on it was okay but it didn't blow my socks off. My partner got the Cordon Bleu chicken dish and thought it tasted like chicken fried steak from your average diner. The ice cream we got for dessert over our chocolate cake was super freezer burnt. Wine was yummy at least. You're much better off going to the Trinidad Bay Eatery if you're in the area. Ambiance is much better, portions are bigger, lots more items on the menu, flavors are good...The wait is well worth it if they put you down on the list. read more

The food is out of this world! From homemade charcuterie to the amazing service, it is an absolute 100% gem. It has a limited menu, but what they do they do incredibly well, so don't hesitate to try this place but make reservations. By the way, the ambience is eclectic and a lot to take in for your first time there I've been there approximately a half dozen times and I always find something new to see, check out the chandelier in the stairwell. read more

Dined here while traveling in the area to celebrate our friends' engagement. I called same day to try to snag a reservation on a weekday and we were in luck! It is located in a somewhat secluded area, but it wasn't difficult to find using Google Maps. The restaurant itself is decorated in a cozy and eclectic way with lots of plush rugs and mood lighting. Service was polite and efficient. The food, though, was certainly the best part of the whole experience. Absolutely delicious. Food is so Dam Good! We spent 4 days traveling northern CA-THE BEST food our entire journey. The gorgonzola sauce on top of the steak with truffle butter was amazing! Yes, the salad with balsamic and bell peppers was really delicious. Nice surprise, charcuterie board with meal -beautiful presentation and it featured goat cheese from the local farm fantastic Figs, apples, pate, and mustard sauce, pumpernickel bread. Ambience is Smooth jazz and low lighting. If you're fine with the colder temps sit outdoors with warming heaters. Definitely a romantic evening with significant other. Jazmine our server did a great job-she worked hard. Be patient and tip well. This is a busy restaurant. THE only exemplary food we found in Trinidad! The area needs more places like this!!!! What a fun experience! I can't wait to go back and catch them earlier! The ambiance is fabulous and very unique. Great place to sit and enjoy your company and the amazing food. Let's talk food - Appetizer board - wonderful flavors and "it's meant to be playful" loved the description of how to combine the items. Get the explanation of the food so you know what you are eating and where it came from! Yummy Half n Half - wow the meat is amazing and yes the brisket is a little spicy so be warned! The salad that comes with the meal is fun and perfect. Fish of the day - we went with steelhead and changed the bed to risotto. Can't go wrong the flavors were on point and everything was perfectly cooked. Vanilla crème brûlée- wow the top was amazing and crunch and the flavor was perfect including the texture. Signature desert- I don't remember the name but might have been a little too smoky for me. I like the textures and it was so cute how it was served. Lemon tart? The bomb! So worth it!! Oh and the music - I say on the bench and put on my shoes and thought someone might be inside playing a piano. Walked in and the sounds were filling the building and added that perfect swanky calming comfortableness to complete the evening. All in all I say a 10 and I'm hard on things! The appetizer plate that arrives before the entree has at least one hard and one soft cheese with their pumpernickel bread. The brie en croute is novel with a cranberry compote accompaniment. The portobello mushroom is also tasty with a very lovely sheeps cheese. The brisket was mildly spicy but could have been a little leaner. I found the dishes to be well presented, but they all skewed sweet to very sweet. They needed a bit more savory to make the meal more robust. I thought we would get that with the brisket and mushroom but alas those were sweet, too. read more

This is an excellent spot for a nice, classy dinner up in Trinidad! From the presentation to the flavors, you can tell they put a lot into creating a great dining experience here. I have dined on the picturesque outdoor patio, as well as the upstairs dining area. Meals include the appetizer board of cheeses, fruits, dips, and bread. The coconut shrimp (a special appetizer) was crispy and flavorful. I loved the chicken cordon bleu as well -- the sauce was creamy and the chicken was perfectly cooked and tender. For dessert this time we ordered the lemon tart pie as recommended by our server, and it was delicious -- a better cousin of key lime pie in my opinion. Service was great! A Redwood Coast Gem - Don't Miss This Place After a full day hiking through the redwoods, we stumbled into Larrupin' Cafe in Trinidad and it ended up being one of the best meals we've had--not just on this trip, but period. We showed up a few minutes past closing and they still graciously seated us upstairs with a view of their dreamy garden. Our server, Cheyenne, was a total standout--cool, knowledgeable, and just genuinely lovely to talk to. That "cool girl energy" without the attitude? She nailed it. We started with the baked brie wrapped in pastry with fig compote (melty perfection), followed by their appetizer board--which felt like a little love letter to Northern California: house-made chicken pâté, local Monterey Jack, smoked steelhead, goat cheese, figs, cucumber, sweet cherry peppers, and pumpernickel. Farm-to-table magic. I had the special: steelhead served over coconut rice with the best house salad I've ever had. Not exaggerating. My partner got the snapper with a soy miso glaze and mushroom risotto that somehow tasted like fettuccine Alfredo's more sophisticated cousin. Rich, savory, and impossible to stop eating. I also had two peach lambic beers that paired way too well with everything. And dessert? A whipped, sweetened goat cheese layered over chocolate and finished with a bright fruit compote. Wildly good. We went here recently and everything about it was incredible. The lighting was soft and low, just the right kind of ambiance that feels romantic but still comfortable enough for a nice family dinner. The service was on point. There were plenty of servers, and they were consistent and attentive without hovering. Everything ran like clockwork. We started with the carpaccio and the coconut prawns, and wow, you will not find a better coconut prawn anywhere. The batter was crispy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. For the main course, I had the ribs and brisket. The brisket was absolutely to die for, melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The ribs had a beer-battered flavor that wasn't my personal favorite, but if you're a fan of beer batter, you'd be obsessed. My fiancé ordered the steelhead, and it was cooked to absolute perfection, tender, flaky, and seasoned beautifully. From start to finish, the experience didn't miss a beat. This was a most unexpected discovery in Trinidad. The restaurant has great atmosphere: it's in a house, which makes for a very cozy experience. But the food is what really sets this place apart. To begin, guests are served an appetizer board, replete with delicious cheeses, pickles, breads, and charcuterie. Ours also had an African chili berry, which I had never had before and tasted delicious. The breads were also noteworthy. For mains, we got the brisket and the trout. The brisket was very tasty. It had been slow smoked and was extremely tender, and the sauce it was finished with was smoky and sweet. The trout was well prepared, and was tender and perfectly cooked. We visited Larrupin a couple of weeks ago. I had been there numerous times over the years but my husband had been once long ago and didn't remember being there. Absolutely everything was perfect. We ordered a couple of grilled small Pacific oysters to start, which came with a tiny bowl of Larrupin sauce. The oysters were only slightly warmed and not really cooked - the briny flavor came through. The appetizer tray that comes with all dinners included house-baked rye bread, chicken liver pate with Larrupin mustard, tiny lightly pickled peppers, apple slices, two kinds of cheese, smoked salmon - I may be forgetting something. We both said we should really take some photos but we dug in too fast. There was an appetizer special of coconut prawns which they turned into a main course at our request. Those were not frozen-out-of-the-box prawns, but extra-large fat hand-breaded prawns. I've never been crazy about coconut prawns - it seems wrong to have sweet coconut coating seafood - but this was the best version I've ever had. We also had cordon bleu - chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto and Havarti cheese and topped with a marsala-mushroom sauce. I am a clean-plate ranger but that was the largest portion of chicken breast I've ever been served. The chicken was moist and tender. My husband had the sweet potato and I had the coconut-macadamia rice. He said the sweet potato was creamy and luscious; the rice went beautifully with the chicken. We also had a glass of Onward Sparkling Malvasia Petillant Naturel and a glass of Ferrari Carrano Fume Blanc, excellent wines both. It was my husband's birthday and he was given coeur de la creme with raspberry sauce on the house. I had the same. A very nice not-too-sweet ending. My partner and I visited on a weekend afternoon for an early dinner. The ambiance and vibes were very dark yet super eclectic - there was always a piece of decor for us to talk about. We ordered the oysters as an app, half and half (brisket and ribs) and New York strip loin, and limoncello tart for dessert. The oysters were super tasty and fresh especially with a squeeze of lemon and dollop of cocktail sauce. The brisket was super tender and delicious (I also really liked the burnt ends) and the rib meat legit fell off the bone. The NY strip loin was super yummy especially with the gorgonzola and mushrooms on top. The limoncello tart was very tart (duh) but really helped to cut the heaviness of all the red meat we had. Here's the deal! Larrupin is couple miles off the Main Street of the scenic fishing / tourist town of Trinidad! Unassuming from the road the restaurant opens up inside to an eclectic place with unique artwork and dark carpets. While inside is a wonderful experience the outside/ backyard portion is a garden oasis. The food has some strong appetizers and main course that consist of steak, ribs, chicken the special apps (bbq oysters straight from Humboldt Bay) and the coconut prawns were amazing ! The complimentary cheese, fruit and bread board is a nice touch to add a variety of flavors to the experience. Main courses are straight forward items steak(s), pork chop (which is amazing ) and the chicken dishes are spot on. Once again. Grab one of the specials when you can. They're spot on! Our bill was around $400 (without tip) for 4 people and we weren't checked on after our food came out until we asked for the bill which I wasn't a huge fan of. This was easily the most amazing dinner I've ever had! The ambiance was incredible, with great service (our waitress was so sweet and explained everything in great detail)- it truly was an amazing date night. We started with their appetizer board that comes with dinner, along with grilled oysters (they had them as a special) and the rosemary roasted garlic app. Everything was delicious and then our dinner came out which was perfect timing! The steak was cooked to perfection and truly could not have been better. Dessert was crème brûlée and a slice of chocolate pecan pie (also amazing). Okay so, Larrupin Cafe is pretty much the only game in town for a nice meal BUT - they've got great game! We were staying in a nearby B&B and literally ate here 3 nights in a row. We sat inside twice and outside once - love the ambiance inside and out and we lucked out with live music. It was perfect and not too loud. The food was delicious and between my husband and myself, we tried pretty much everything. The NY strip and lamb chops were our faves. All of our servers and the hostesses were super nice.
