Humemodern did as well and I was completely fine with their original quote. It was very reasonable, especially when compared to the price of replacing my chair. In original, older chairs, vulcanized rubber joining pieces harden over time, ultimately failing and leading to "unintentional rapid disassembly" (breakage.) If you dig around a bit on the Hume web site, you'll find one of their secrets: they have a U.S. based supplier custom-manufacture replacement vulcanized rubber components for the chair. They've also perfected bonding techniques to install these replacements without changing the design, unwanted screws, etc. Alfie handled the repair and reassembly of our Eames chair, providing prompt quotes, fast turn-around and excellent workmanship. I'd give this place every star in the universe if I could. I came across Hume while looking to repair my Eames Wooden Lounge Chair. A friend of ours had a 3D metal skull on his wallet which was in his back pocket, and apparently can't sit still, because the wood on the chair was just shredded. I went on over to Hume's website and submitted an estimate request with a few attached images. It's actually a very simple form. Within 24 hours, I received an estimate. I brought the chair on over. I was greeted by Alfie who, upon seeing the chair in real life, admitted that it was pretty beat up. He was 100% honest with me on the expectations I should have, which included that even with a repair, the chair would never look new again. He gave me a few options, and told me to call back in a day or two so I could discuss with my husband to decide what path was right for us. Two days later, *I* received an email from them letting me know that the chair had been repaired and looked perfect. Thinking that they had maybe mixed me up with someone else I wrote back, but sure enough, it was me. I went in with my husband to get the chair. Before revealing the repair he said - "Now, you're going to tell me that this is a different chair..." He put the chair down which looked brand new. Of course I yelled, "THAT'S A DIFFERENT CHAIR!" Of course it wasn't. They had just put in a LOT of time and care into repairing the damage. And if you missed it up top, this was only two days later. That is an amazing turn around time. Be careful about ordering parts online. I ordered replacement felt glides for my tulip chairs online which were depicted in photos as being curved to accommodate the curved chair base. I ended up paying $112 for 4 straight strips of adhesive felt that cannot function on the round chair base. The owner would not refund my money without charging me a 30% restocking fee which I found to be unacceptable given the misrepresentation of the item. read more

I had the shells of some original Arne Jacobsen Egg and Swan chairs, with all the upholstery missing and the foam badly damaged. I shipped the items and when I got them back I was blown away--perfect restoration of the chairs! The Egg Chair was done in dark leather per Alfie's recommendation, and the Swan in orange wool. I was super impressed by the attention to detail and the workmanship. For example, the Egg Chair was restored with a single piece of leather for the back--often knock offs will have a seam down the back. I'm really impressed. Yelp, you steered me wrong this time but I'll forgive you for all of the good times we've shared. An integral little metal piece from a mid-century sleeper sofa I have snapped, rendering the couch useless. About 1/4 of it snapped off from the other side. I brought it in to Alfie, who said he could weld it - no problem. He asked that I bring the the other intact piece from the opposite side of the sofa as a reference so I pulled the whole sofa out of where I had it stored and unscrewed the piece to bring it in. When I went back to his shop with this piece, he looked at it and came up with what he thought might be a better way to fix the broken one and I agreed that it should work. He quoted me a reasonable enough price and said he would call me when it was done. I then entered my crazy period each year at work and frankly, the couch wasn't a huge priority since I got another one to sit on daily, but when I called two months later after not hearing from him to check on it, a noticeably peeved Alfie scolded me for not calling in two months and said, "No, we're not going to bother with it. We're not going to do it." So I went in to get the pieces from him today and he offered no apology or advice on where else to take it. And I've driven to his shop three times for nothing. A piece of free customer service advice: Don't act like you are going to help someone, come up with multiple ideas for how to do it, and then not call them for two months, having done nothing at all and refusing to rectify the situation in an entirely unapologetic fashion. For some reason, people don't like to be treated that way. read more
