Until, I moved away from Brownwood five years ago, I was a semi-regular customer at Humprey Pete's and had mostly enjoyed my previous visits. That said, I just moved back to town and decided to eat there again.....big mistake! While the food was adequate, other than a few complaints like the rolls being cold and stale when they arrived, overall the food was edible and tasted fine (the Cajun shrimp boil plate was very good btw). It was everything else about our visit that caused our dissatisfaction, so the *2 stars* I gave my review, in no way should be an indication of the food quality. My wife and I arrived on a Monday at 3:45pm for an early dinner, so we could miss the crowd and were escorted to the main dining room by the hostess. Our waitress (Sharon) came within 30 seconds of us being seated and asked if we were ready to order. When we requested that she "give us a minute", she disappeared for at least 20mins. While she was gone, we started being dive bombed by a large number of flies(dozens) buzzing around the window/table and we eventually had to move to another table because when we complained, the waitress really didn't take our issue seriously. Once we had ordered our meal, we only saw our waitress two more times, once when we managed to wave her over trying to get a drink refill after 40mins, and the last time, when she brought the bill. Bear in mind, we were two of only a literal hand full of customers in the dining room at that time, so it's not like our waitress could have been terribly busy and we didn't see her serving anyone else. What was readily apparent, the entire time we were visiting this restaurant, is that the staff is mostly young, lazy, disinterested and extremely immature. We witnessed employees standing around doing nothing, socializing loudly, expressing their mutual affection inappropriately in several instances, using profanity and generally not doing their jobs. Also, for the entire time we were seated, every minute or so, someone would suddenly blast extremely loud rock music over the speakers in the room and they *seriously* did this every minute or so for most of the over an hour we were there. We could literally see employees in the kitchen area smiling and laughing about it, so we know it was deliberate. Again, when we complained to the waitress, she didn't care and patronized us condescendingly by saying "the radio is switching channels by itself" and did nothing. Humphrey Pete's could be a very nice place to eat, but it's very apparent it has a SERIOUS problem with it's staff. Whomever is managing this restaurant needs to immediately review their hiring and training practices, because what we were subjected to, is the sort of thing that can literally bankrupt a business once the word gets out to the customers. I really have enjoyed this restaurant in the past, and I hope they address their issues soon, so they will continue to do business. However, until I hear something positive about major changes being made, I won't be eating there again. read more

This was our first trip to Brownwood, and we saw the "STEAKS" sign as we drove past. My husband and I decided that would be the place to eat supper. As far as we were concerned, it was a huge mistake. We ordered the ribeye on a bed of grilled onions. Sounds great, right?? Comes with 2 sides: we got a baked potato w/the works, and cut corn. Steak was fatty....corn and baked potato so cold, that butter would not melt on either one. Steak left a bad after-taste. Whole experience left a bad after-taste. This place is fantastic! I had the 16 oz. Ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. It was done just right and the spiced rub was excellent. It was honestly one of the better steaks I've had at a restaurant. My co-worker had the same and he agreed. I had green beans and fried okra with my steak and both of those were good too. The only reason it did not get 5 stars from me was because of service. We were seated promptly, and our food came promptly. But, once our food was delivered we did not see the server again until he brought the check. I like having my drink refilled as often as necessary. So, that was one star gone! Pretty A-OK experience...twice... at Humphrey Pete's while in the Brownwood area for our long wedding weekend. Great rolls, the jalapeno pork chops were very tasty. This place is original to Brownwood. I was told it was a slaughter house at one time. There is a room that still has a panel in it with a wall mural of The Wizard of Oz. There is a patio in the back that's nice and an outdoor play area for the kids. Small cozy bar in the back....smoking is allowed. They have homemade cheese sticks that are awesome. Our usual stop on a trip to Austin. I ordered the super cheeseburger. The bun was soft and had a slightly sweet flavor. The beef was perfect, but the. Went on Friday night for a sit down meal. It was late around eight o'clock. Ordered club sandwich and fries. A friend ordered a burger without lettuce and sauce, they sent it back because it came out not as ordered. Club sandwich was OK, however the fries portion was very small. Really impressed!! Stopped in this place on the way through Brownwood. The atmosphere is really neat inside. The pulled pork tacos were delicious and more than I could eat. The tortillas were homemade and the beans on the side had just enough kick. My boyfriend ordered the sirloin and shrimp and said it was really good. Best sweet potato he has ever had. I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because our dinner salads were really small and mine had some soggy, old lettuce in it. Saturday special is half a BBQ chicken with 2 sides. Basically a baked half chicken covered in BBQ sauce. That's not barbecue. That's what you get in a cafeteria. This is the ideal place to grab a drink and watch a ball game in town.(Not as stingy about beer as BDUBS, and a premium alternative to Chilis)). The food is quality but I usually just get appetizers or a burger. For a full meal, I recommend one of their steaks, or the No Ka Oi fish tacos. We received excellent service and the food was good. Since it was our first visit, we wanted to try a little of everything. The cheese sticks and chicken strips are great. They are homemade and delicious. The ranch was good dipping. The stuffed jalepenos were good, not great. The fried pickles were thick cut with heavy breading. If you like them that way, you'll love them; that's just not my preference, but they were good. My husband and I split a ribeye. It was cooked to a true medium; we were totally impressed with that. It was a good steak, but seemed a little watery, like it had been frozen before. The sweet potato was excellent and the loaded baked potato was good, as well. I visit Humphrey Petes several times a year. Food is great. Atmosphere is rustic and unique. One of the few locations that still allows smoking in the bar area. So the old fashion way of stopping in having a drink and a cigarette still intrigues me The only complaint I have is every time I stop in to the bar there are 2-4 girls behind the bar in their phones texting rather than checking with the customers. Service isn't bad but I just do not like seeing a staff member at work more focused on her phone that making sure the customer has everything they need. If you can get passed that it's certainly worth a trip to Brownwood. Go for the jalapeño shrimp. Yummy read more

The wait for a table usually isn't long, though it's always packed and is very noisy. The food is moderately priced, not too high, not too low. I order the Island Nachos every time I go there, and I am never disappointed. This $9.99 appetizer will fill up one person as much as a full meal, great cheap way to share with a party of six. This was possibly the worst place ever!! Called ahead about a week before we decided to go, since there was a large group of us going, and when we arrived, they had no idea who we were.. The environment is welcoming, and the restaurant is well decorated and clean with plenty of space for larger families. The service is great, and the wait time for food is short. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone simply because the food is delicious, and the menu has enough variety to please all! The restaurant offers large portions of steak, seafood, burgers, sandwiches, Mexican food, and more! My personal favorite is the Chicken Club Ranch! The buns on the sandwiches and burgers are moist with a hint of sweetness. The meat is mesquite grilled and always cooked perfectly! I read complaints of smokiness, I have never even noticed cigarette smoke in or around the building. Hate to put a wet blanket over some otherwise star studded reviews but none of them were my experience. Ordered the Cowboy Cut with two baked potatoes and fresh rolls. After 30 minutes was told that they were out of spuds. Would be at least another 30 minutes before the next harvest or we could order another side. Decided to take my food to go and asked for two orders of french fries instead of waiting a minute longer for the two baked potatoes. Our Server Joshua got our order to go but only sent one order of french fries and some store bought rolls with us. My guest told me the steak was good and indeed it was cooked right but it could have been better if we were told about running out of potatoes sooner and/ or were served two orders of fries with Humphrey Pete's rolls. read more
