Don't waste your time. Truth is I've probably had dozens of different chinese take outs and this was one of the worst yet. I don't expect a miracle, just basic run of the mill Chinese food. The chicken was tough and sinewy and the worst part of it all was, there was a small staple like shard of aluminum or wire, or metallic shiver in one of my chunks of chicken. This place has good beef and tendon noodle soup with homemade noodles. It comes in a big bowl with a big soup spoon. Dinner portion sizes are very generous. Enough to feed 2-3 people per dish. The food is light compared to other Chinese takeout places. They don't use a lot of oil (if at all), and the sauce isn't salty/thick. If you like light sauces with fresh vegetables, you will like this place. There are pictures for almost every dish on the menu, which is a plus. The cashier also speaks Spanish. Well. Good standard American-Chinese fare with OK prices (a little bit pricier than some others around), but good sized portions and variety of items. I like how you can see into the kitchen, while the cooks are back there working their wok magic. I think another thing that sets them apart is their homemade noodles that they use in their variety of noodle soup options. Be warned - these are some mighty big bowls of soup. Our go to place for delivery. We've ordered from Hunan cafe at least twenty times and every single time it has been great. Nice people, fairly fast delivery and really good food. They will do custom orders - just ask. I really don't understand any negative reviews about heat, flavor, etc. Tell them you want it spicy (or more bland, whatever) and they'll do it. My wife gets the vegetable lo mein custom almost all the time and it's exactly right each time. Highly recommended for delivery. read more

Pretty good. I don't usually like lo mein, but read another reviewers comments and tried their combo lo mein but without chicken. It was pretty good. The shrimp was pretty big and tender. I can't stand big chunks of carrots and this didn't have that - the carrots were finely shredded. The beef was nice and tender. Overall, very good lo mein. I also got the crab rangoon which is almost always pretty good here. I think there was one time when they were not good at all. It must depend on the person that is preparing them. If you live or work nearby, it is definitely a good fair-priced option for your basic Chinese lunch specials. I had the Sesame Chicken and the taste was on-point and the portion size was acceptable. This was the second and the last time I tried the food here. the main reson I tried the food was that they advertise no msg, preservative and fresh veggies. I tried their hunan chicken - it was ok. The pad thai was ok. the Garlic chicken sucked. There was no garlic flavor, it was not spicy but sweet with uncooked carrots -lots of them. Will never eat there again. I drive to this location of Hunan Cafe from the other side of Herndon because they use all fresh produce and unlike just about every other Chinese place around here, their chicken dishes battered with chicken are not 80% corn starch batter and 20% crappy chicken. [aside: The other place up next to Home Depot (at Reston Pkwy and Baron Cameron) was the most offensive I've had here, it was tiny pieces of crappy chicken padded out with fried corn starch.] High quality ingredients, and I don't mind that their prices are a bit higher than I'm used to (though I've also only been in this area for 2 years so everything still seems a bit higher than normal). Coming from NY, this is the first and last Chinese place I've found down here which comes anywhere close to what I'm used to. It's not so much a different style as much as the quality of other places has left a lot to be desired. They also deliver fairly quickly even at what I presume to be peak times and with us being not exactly right next door. I thinks its a great little place. I have been going there ever since they opened and before this I used to go to there othe rlocation in Reston (thats still there BTW). I thinks the prices are very reasonable and one thing that I know for sure and really like is, they do not use canned veggies. Their veggies are always fresh. Very bad bad service i order the food to deliver and it took an hour till the driver show up so i call and complain and they told me sorry will gove u 10% off normaly if the delivery late an hour the food will be for free but no they dodnt want to give it to me for free and told me we had alot of delivery to do thats why but i told them at lest you should tell me so i could order food from somewhere els but no they were selfish and didnt tell us very poor and bad seevice dont recoment it at all read more

Freshly made stereotypical Chinese food. I really liked it. I got the kung pow chicken. The restaurant is clean and the staff are really nice. They don't have a soda machine so be prepared to buy Coke or water by the bottle. Based on the stream of customers while I was there it looks like most of their business is carry out so don't be turned off if you show up and the place looks empty. read more

Serves Chinese-American food and its pretty good. Don't order the roast duck it has no flavor and isn't moist at all. The crispy beef was pretty good. I'd go there if I was stuck in Herndon but otherwise I'd hit some real Chinese restaurants like XO Seafood or Vinh Kee. read more

I have ordered from here twice now and have been disappointed both times. The soup was good but both chicken entrees I have ordered have been overstuffed with vegetables and bland chicken. This cafe has good quality Chinese food. Except for the soups, which were packed with so many ingredients that they were hard to eat, I've liked everything here. first the noodle soups are not good and over priced. at most Vietnamese restaurants you can get a delicious bowl of pho for less money. now onto this disaster. the pad me mao. the worst food yet. the over cooked mushy noodles all stuck together, no scallions or basil as advertised. a stray slice of jalapeno pepper found its way in there. the few pieces of chicken were greasy and huge chunks of red onion. p.s Chinese cooks use white onion. and this mess was not at all seasoned. after i tried to pick a few pieces of chicken out of this pile of crap i gave up and dumped the load into the trash. im going to resort to not ordering again from anywhere and make my own food. and at least ill have a fork which these places dont bring. read more
