    Brown Rice

I was out and about and in the mood for Chinese takeout and Chen's Kitchen was just a 1/2 mile away so I said let me swing by and give them a try. I was greeted as soon as J entered and they have their menu on a large flatscreen that's right at the counter which made deciding on what to order easier than it typically is with traditional paper menus or with the picture menus on the walls. I ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan and Steamed Chicken & Broccoli both with Brown Rice. I was told it would take 10 minutes and it was ready right on time. I took the food home to eat and I must say that Chen's Kitchen gives my usual Chinese takeout restaurant a run for its money so I will definitely be ordering from them again!

I know this one of those local, typical Chinese restaurants, but I've ordered many times from Chen's since moving to Herndon 4 years ago and wanted to give them a review. Whenever I am craving American Chinese food, I order here and always get the right stuff consistenly. I also always get my order delivered, but I made the drive to pick up my food for once and was pleasantly surprised by how nice the customer service is too. My pickup order had General Tso's chicken, egg drop soup, and beef with broccoli. All necessary utensils were included and I also got a free eggroll thrown in. The price was also decent for everything I got! The location is in a small shopping center and is not difficult to spot. Upon entering, the front desk is pretty much in front of you and they have a large monitor with the menu on it.

Burnt to a crisp dumplings. Went into the trash.

Ordered UE: chicken and asparagus and dumplings. The entree was delicious and tasted vibrant and fresh but those dumplings..... took a whole star off for the burnt food. Come on.........

    Not hot and sour

The portions are incredibly generous, and every dish we tried was delicious. The drunken noodles were packed with flavor, the fried rice was perfectly cooked, the Tso's chicken was excellent, and the steamed fish was fresh and beautifully prepared. The highlight of the meal was the spectacular tableside Flambé dessert--it was both delicious and a fun experience. The service was exceptional. Our waitress was incredibly sweet, attentive, and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the meal. The owners were also warm and welcoming, adding to the wonderful dining experience. And don't skip the beer--it was fantastic! Great food, generous portions, outstanding hospitality, and excellent value. We'll definitely be back.

But what we did get was pretty darn good (if a bit pricey)! The style is much more authentic, so if you're looking for something like Hunan Cafe (Greenbriar), or that NOVA institution China King, this is different. Is it better? For the most part, yes. (But I still crave that Americanized sweet, spicy, glazey brown sauce that comes in slight variations in so many dishes). I had the hot and sour soup, Szechuan spicy fried eggplant sticks, Taiwanese rice noodles with fried tofu, and the Chengdu twice cooked pork. Everything was excellent, except....the hot and sour soup. Honestly, Hunan Cafe and China King beat the pants off this place's hot and sour soup. Here, it was a bit too sweet. It had some red chilies in it, but I could not detect much white pepper. And it's a vegetarian version, so no small bits of chicken or pork. I'd skip this the next time I order from here. But the other dishes... amazing! The noodles were light-tasting but still delicious. The eggplant was garnished with cilantro, garlic, salt, and red chili sauce. The twice cooked pork was sauteed with sliced leeks and the same red chili sauce. I think that's the fresh, zingy, spice flavor profile I like that can't be found at Americanized Chinese restaurants. Sure, China King has its place and I'll still go back there when I'm close (RIP China King Fair Lakes and Herndon). And admittedly, I go to that awful Panda chain occasionally because I never learn. The unfortunate thing is, I'll more likely go to these places than Cheng's because of the price. The pork dish was $21 and the noodle dish was $19. My total bill came to $60 before tax and tip. If I need to stuff my face with a Chinese umami bomb fast, I'm probably going to the other places for $15-30. I do want to try the rest of the menu at Cheng's, but it's going to be a drawn-out process for the sake of my wallet. I'd be remiss if I didn't include a comment from my dining partner. She compared the quality and taste of the food at Cheng's to Peter Chang's (either Peter Chang's-Herndon, or Mama Chang Fairfax). A high compliment. But she said the value is better at those places' AYCE options than what we got at Cheng's, and I agree. If you've been to none of these places, you have to try them all at least once.

I usually order red curry but I order fried rice and my bf order red curry. He was waiting for me to get my food. I told him to eat. He almost finished his plate before my fried rice ever came. I had to ask about it. It was just horrible experience that I would never come again in person. Ordering online or deliver. I always order red curry and spicy....the spice must depend on the cook for the day thats the only thing not consistent but its so good spice or not. Only reason I gave 2 stars otherwise off of in person id give 1 for the experience. Everytime I come in its just too busy and not worth it. Especially when there isnt a designated waiter or waitress per table. Just leads to ill experience and no accountability for the ill experience.

I looked at the reviews, which are mixed, with some who really like the food but some who were naysayers. Still, we thought it was worth a try. One thing mentioned in a review is that there are currently only two tables in the place. Thus, we were glad to discover that they work with DoorDash. We placed an order this past Sunday. We ordered two hot and sour soups, one order of chicken with snow peas and one order of spicy chicken with garlic sauce. As an aside, rice comes with each entree. We didn't know that so we had ordered one side of rice. As for the food, the portions are large. We got two meals out of them. We were pleasantly surprised by the food. The chicken with snow peas was a mild dish that came with an abundance of white meat chicken and a generous amount of snow peas. The snow peas had a nice crunch to them. The chicken with garlic sauce was mildly spicy and contained white meat chicken, sliced onions, and sliced celery. It reminded me of the same dish I had many years ago: same ingredients, same taste. My husband enjoyed his chicken dish. The hot and sour soup was okay. We've had better, but we've also had worse. If you like button mushrooms, they put a lot of them in this soup. We decided that we would order from them again.

First order: chicken lo mein, general tso's, and the hot chili pork wontons. The lo mein was delicious... chicken super tender, perfectly done. But the wontons were the real standout for me. I hadn't tried that style before and wow, so flavorful and tender! The general tso's was the one miss for me, not bad but not my favorite rendition of the dish, and the white rice was just okay. Did any of that stop me from ordering again days later? Absolutely not! Second order: we swapped in the mongolian chicken and the hot chili pork dumplings and this was the upgrade we needed. The mongolian chicken was SO good... again incredibly tender, tons of onions, deeply flavorful. And the dumplings? Perfection. The filling is more evenly dispersed throughout than the wontons, making every bite perfectly balanced with the pork and chili oil. Even the rice was better this time around, not sure what changed but I'm not asking questions! We've been dreaming about this meal ever since and genuinely cannot wait to order again. However, despite its name, I didn't find the dish spicy at all. I also felt it could've used more seasoning, as the flavors were milder than I expected. - Cumin Spicy Diced Lamb ($13): This was my favorite dish. The lamb was tender, the cumin flavor really stood out, and it actually had the level of spice I was hoping for. - Vegan Szechuan Cold Noodles ($7): I've had this dish at other restaurants and usually love it, but this version was disappointing. It arrived warm instead of cold, so I refrigerated it overnight. By the next day, the noodles had become too firm, and the Szechuan flavors were very subtle. This may just be one of those dishes that's better enjoyed fresh in the restaurant rather than delivered. One thing to note is that rice isn't included with the entrées. I forgot to add rice to my order, but the restaurant kindly included some anyway, which I really appreciated.
