I saw this driving into Cortez and it looked good. My cousin who lives in Cortez said it was the best Chinese restaurant in town. I'm glad we went. This is American style Chinese food and they do a nice job with it. It's a very clean restaurant and it's simple. I loved it, kinda' like a diner, and I mean that in a good way. My dad had sweet and sour pork. He said it was the best he ever had. My sister had stir fried rice and loved hers too. I had cashew chicken. Pretty good, too!! The service is friendly and efficient. They also do takeout. There's plenty of parking out back and there's plenty of room inside to come and enjoy a nice lunch or dinner. The menu is extensive and the prices are reasonable. I ordered takeout yesterday, which consisted of vegetable fried rice with tofu, wonton soup, and egg rolls. I have ordered there many times before for a quick dinner. This time, the food made me so sick that I was up most of the night with severe stomach pains and have had diarrhea all day. I suspect the egg rolls because while they tasted good, they were extremely greasy. Don't think I'll be coming back. The stomach pains were so severe that I was sweating and felt like I might pass out. And my wife also had a bad reaction to the food up in the middle of the night in the bathroom. Food Buffet was very limited to choose from - cold and over cooked, looked like left overs. Dried fried dumplings - never seen Asian food that bad! To top it off they wanted 18.00! Greeted promptly with a smile and welcome. The ambiance was nice with soft piano music in the background, just loud enough to hear, but allow quiet conversation. Food was fresh and amazing. The egg rolls and cream cheese wontons crisp and tasty. The wonton soup a delight, with the Chinese cabbage, green onions, zucchini, and carrot. I had Sweet and Sour Chicken. When you're in the middle of nowhere, you expect the chinese food to probably not be great but ZOUNDS the service was here was dreadful. Despite the fact that the first words out of my universal translator was "I would *beep* *click* *whirr* place an order for DELIVERY" they accidentally rang me up as a pick up order (which apparently is 15% less, good to know!) and would not do anything to correct *their* error except insist that I come in my invasion saucer and pick up my own damn nutritional sustenance. Upon my arrival I was also greeted with an INCORRECT food order. I ordered *6* "egg rolls" (except they weren't egg rolls and despite the fact that the order taker reiterated "3" orders (since *2* come in an order), I got *1* order. ARRRRRRGGGGH! This was our go to place for Chinese in town. The food is better than the other Chinese options. However, twice there have been bits of debris in our food. The first time was a piece of metal from a scrubber. We complained and received an apology. We thought ok, mistakes happen and they will be more careful so we continued to eat here. Then we found a melted plastic shard. They tried to convince us it was a piece of onion, then informed us it was impossible the plastic came from them because they use metal bowls. They acted as if we added the plastic ourselves to cheat them out of a free meal. Unfortunately we had gotten take out so we'd already paid, but that was the last time we went there. I have never been more disappointed with Chinese food as with this restaurant. The place was clean but it went downhill quickly after that. Girl taking orders was rude & impatient. My husband & I ordered Sesame Chicken & the Kung Pao Chicken. We love Chinese but Hunan's may have ruined us forever off of Chinese. I wish I could say it was flavorless but it was plain disgusting. Soggy with an awful tangy taste! We took a few bites and quickly disposed of the whole entire order. I will never go back nor would I recommend Hunan Chinese to my worst enemy. The worst Chinese food I have ever had, I feel ripped off. We just moved to Cortez & My husband picked up a big to go order. If I was dining in, I would have sent almost all back.. and that is RARE for me. The picture of a $9 Chinese chicken salad is attached. Sub par iceberg lettuce w/a couple little pieces of pineapple, carrot & shaved chicken. A "dressing" that was like water, vinegar & sugar. All the 4 other dishes ordered were bland and below average of any Chinese food I've ever ordered in my 56 yr old life. What a bummer. I lived in a smaller town than Cortez for a few years that had a Chinese restaurant & it was awesome. So the small town excuse doesn't fly with me. Hunan Chinese Restaurant - chicken and vegetables in a styrofoam container - Chinese Near Me - Cortez, Colorado

Having been told about Hunan and the buffet by friends, we decided to try it out; unfortunately what we did not know is that the buffet is only served at lunch time. Arriving around 5pm, we found ourselves to be the only diners in the restaurant; the staff were seated at a back booth talking, but seated us as soon as we got their attention. After that, service was very attentive; making sure our water glasses were filled and that we were happy with the dishes we had ordered. We ordered two appetizers, Egg Rolls and Dumplings (choice of fried or steamed); these are made fresh every morning in house. The wrappers on the egg rolls was lightly fried and crispy; it was loaded with shredded cabbage, so much so, that it was difficult to bite apart, so it all came out of the wrapper in a chunk. I used a fork to break it into smaller pieces to dip in my mixture of sweet/sour sauce and hot mustard. The dumplings were not pan fried like other Chinese restaurants usually do; they were deep fried which made the wrappers hard and too crunchy. Before the appetizers were served, we were given a bowl of Egg Drop Soup; it was amazingly delicious. Thicker than usual, with little bits of carrot and so satisfying. Next time we go back, I'll fore go the appetizers and just enjoy the soup. We also ordered two main dishes; Combination Rice Noodles and Happy Family. The Combination Rice Noodles did not have any sauce on it which allowed the freshness of the noodles, vegetables, pork, beef, shrimp and chicken to sing out loud. A slight sprinkling of soy sauce enhanced this dish more; but it was delicious with or without the sauce. If you think about comfort food, this is it Chinese style. Happy Family made us both very happy indeed; the brown sauce was out of this world in flavor; the vegetables were crisp; the BBQ pork slices, beef, chicken and shrimp were all cooked perfectly. This is one of those dishes that, no matter how full you feel, you still want to keep on eating it. It was served with white rice which we used to make sure we sopped up every bit of sauce. Overall, the appetizers were a fail, but the soup and main dishes made up for it in spades. In the mood for Chinese food and in the Cortez, Colorado area; Hunan Chinese Restaurant is a must try. read more

My family eats here once in a while. Whoever thinks that this place is bad does not know what they are talking about. The food is authentic. The sesame chicken is not orange chicken like 99% of the other chinese restaurants serve, it does taste like sesame chicken. My favorite dish is the crispy duck. If you want good Chinese food come here and dont use the other product that Colorado serves it makes you stupid. read more

Decided to order out for the family to have dinner at home. I ordered sizzling rice soup, beef and broccoli, chicken fried rice , orange chicken, and rice noodle with chicken. Of course I ordered extra steam rice for the leftovers for the next day. We came around 5:30 and placed our order. We were told 15-20minutes which was fine. This family run restaurant looks to have been her for some time. Locals came through the door as time went by. So after a trip home we opened our to go boxes! I really enjoyed the dish I ordered,sizzling rice soup, it was loaded with veggies and the broth was seasoned just right. Our rice for the soup was just right. The chicken in the soup was tender and made the whole dish great! Now to the other dishes... the beef and broccoli was saucy like we like it. The orange chicken was done just right and had orange zest to offset the sweetness. Now for the rice noodle .. I have to say that I'm a big of Singapore noodles and this was far from that. The best Chinese Food in Cortez, no doubt. It is located conveniently near by the Mesa Verde National Park, and make it the natural choice if you want to tase authentic Chinese Food. They serve buffet in lunch time with plenty of dished to select from. For dinner, we ordered Tepanyaki Beef and Kong-Bao Chicken, and found both dished were great with plenty portion. The place is clean and neat. You just have to park in front and walk in from behind the main entrance. It's owned and operated by a family, so you can expect the services to be good as it's their own business. Highly recommend if you are touring in this area or live around town. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would. Had an order DoorDashed to me, and was the worst Chinese food experience I've ever had in my life. The eggrolls were soggy, the fried cheese wontons and shrimp tasted like they were reused from the lunch Buffet. I would not be leaving a review on yelp if the manager had addressed my issue with respect and dignity. Instead, she blamed me for the way I ordered the food about six times. I ordered shrimp without vegetables and I don't understand how ordering it without vegetables could make my eggrolls, fried cheese wontons, and hot and sour soup all taste equally deplorable. The manager was incredibly argumentative and tried to blame my driver who arrived within 10 minutes of picking up the food. When she apologized all I could hear was sarcasm in her tone. Friendly service. They let us sit in the new addition with all the windows. It definitely helped with the experience. Though, we can't blame the waitresses for the lack of service, because that's not where customers usually sit. The food was decent but not really meeting our expectations.
