Sweet & Sour Pork Lunch Special
    Vee P.

This place has been around forever and I've tried just about everything on the menu. The food here is tailored to a western palate and leans on the salty side. The lunch specials are generous and a good deal. But the only thing I love here is the combo egg fu young (without the sauce) - it is the best egg fu young I've had and no other one comes close. Sometimes I'll get the pineapple shrimp too, but it's usually just the egg fu young. It is perfectly cooked every single time! 5 stars just for this dish! Service is always friendly, ample parking in a large lot, located right next to McDonald's.

Hunan Garden was a unique experience and glad I finally got to try this place after so many years of driving by it and them catching my eye. My overall review of this spot would be a 3.5 but rounding up as I do. Breakdown of score: 5 stars for service / staff 3 stars for food / taste 4 stars pricing 4 stars ambiance My favorite thing about this restaurant is the service. The staff here are so incredibly nice. Sometimes you want to give a restaurant 5 stars because you adore the staff but I know you can't give that many based on service alone. However I am happy to give them credit where due. Michelle is the owner / running the business for her family. Michelle has so much experience in the restaurant business and it shows. It's a total testament to her and her commitment that this restaurant has been open for decades now. She's super passionate and proud of this business, it definitely inspired me and made me want to come back to support this business. Her staff who bus and service the tables were so nice. A young girl helped us, sorry I didn't catch her name, but she was on top of things and friendly throughout our dining experience. I like the decor of this restaurant. The outside is super cool and palatial looking. Very old school and catches your eye when driving down the boulevard. The interior was clean and welcoming. My friend and I liked the paint colors on the walls and the booths were comfortable. Menu here is pretty big. I was impressed. The prices seemed pretty good as they have weekday lunch specials and for dinner there were some good family style items and combinations. For two of us for dinner it came to about $55. We got soup, appetizers, two entrees, and a cup of fried rice each. The food had its ups and downs, hard to put my finger on it but maybe their food isn't sauced or seasoned to my usual tastebuds when it comes to the flavors of Chinese food that I like? I eat Chinese food a lot and while the ingredient were super fresh here, some of the dishes lacked depth and really profound flavors. There wasn't really a dish that was a home run for me, good dishes definitely but just not 100% what I would crave. My favorite bite honestly was their simple egg flower soup. For entrees we ordered the Mongolian beef and Szechuan pork. I thought the green onions in the beef dish were good and there was ample sauce which I normally like, the flavors however were very subdued. The fried rice also wasn't good to be to be honest. The appetizers were no frills but good. Definitely would need to give some other dishes a try in the future. Overall coming here with a friend was a good experience as customer service was great and the atmosphere was inviting and unique. However, the food is pretty middle of the road and I didn't find my perfect dish here on the first trip. Would consider coming back for a lunch special in the future as this is a thriving old school family business in Oxnard so it's nice to support them.

Overall 3.5 *^^^ Whhooooass !! I have lived in Oxnard a lot of my life and have never been to this establishment! The building itself is very iconic and eye catching on the Blvd! The lions on the side and the big red door ... bam! A statement . We ordered the Szechuan chicken and Mongolian beef Dinner option. It came with egg drop soup , app and rice for 25 each . Portions are large. Michelle was kind and friendly! Love her personality.. I didn't love the flavors but my palette is very Americanized. I really don't know authentic flavors! I did see a lot of people come in and out , so I know it's a local favorite. I know the flavors I love .. though my palette is very un trained on Chinese food but I can say ... I didn't want to absolutely devour the food. I, however, appreciate great service , a clean place and an overall good experience:)

Their food is too salty, its not good if you have a high blood pressure. It's not worth eating here. Not healthy for me. Sorry but I am not coming back here. Are you?

Probably should not eat out at all if you have high blood pressure. Every restaurant uses more salt and spices than one would if they were to cook at home. Just my 2 cents.

With the cyclospora in mind, Chinese food seems like the safest bet. This place feels like a hole…read morein the wall type of restaurant. There were a couple couples that look like they're on dates. Service is really good here. And we ordered all the food we wanted to try. It seems like they tried to limit the chances of the cyclospora parasite since no one has a definite source yet (Mongolian beef usually has raw green onions but they subbed wok fired yellow onions). But some stuff they kept the cilantro and green onions (bc they were cold dishes) The pan fried dumpling would have been good if it didn't have so much Ginger.. I'm not too into Ginger but the dumpling was nice because it had the juice inside of it and the texture was nice The refreshing woodear is a cold dish that has a chewy/crunchy texture. The soy sauce/vinegar flavor makes it refreshing when the other foods get heavy. Spicy beef slices were not that bad, but I prefer more of the spicy szechuan flavor (numbing/tingly feeling). The cilantro and green onions also provided good flavor The beef and onion pancake reminded me of mushu beef, it had the same wrap, hoision sauce flavor with meat and veggies-green onions. It also had good amount of meat Hunan beef was ok but wife enjoyed it. Wife's cooking prepared me for the peppers...is it a jalapeno or a green pepper...Russian roulette if you can't handle spicy. The Mongolian beef had reg onions instead of the green onions. Lots of onions..but I can't be mad bc the onions had the wok fire flavor, which I enjoy and not many places do it. The spicy eggplant with hot garlic sauce had lots of woodears, the eggplant was a little more on the sweet side, and the eggplant had a little bit of a crispyness to it. The salt and pepper shrimp almost reminded me of fried cake batter. It had some sweetness to it so it confused me cuz I was expecting something savory. At the end of the meal we had our fortune cookie, which seemed like it was more of an ad than a fortune.. sneaky Fortune Cookie company. Overall this place was pretty good and worth trying, especially since they have great service

Well indeed it's really good. Pack with flavor not spicy but just enough kick. Very well. Now, this place has the best Dandan noodle, even better than the one in Monterey Park or Alhambra. Best part is, its even good when it's cold. Garlic pork ribs. I was thinking like a riblets but it's more like garlic fried pork chop. Not what I expected but it's delicious. Fried pork dumpling. The meat inside is very succulent. Thumbs up. Can't skipped the XLB. I must say that the staff are very hard working and efficient. Thanks. Will be back soon.

I hate to leave a bad review because I know restaurants are struggling like all of us, but with the price of everything these days, this almost $80 meal for 2 was going to be a treat. Choose wisely where you spend your hard earned $ these days. The soup choice was incorrect, the paper wrap chicken was ok but the 2 fried shrimp and egg rolls were bar b doll sized! Included fried rice had nothing but brown color. Our 3 flavor chow mein was greasy but dry?, gummy and mostly flavorless, lacked any discernible vegetables and had just a small amount of meat. Craziest of all, the sweet and sour chicken came as 2 flavorless sliced, battered and fried chicken cutlets and a container of a small amount of basically raw veggies in what tasted like a cornstarch slurry with ketchup and a bit of pineapple juice added. My Sis called the restaurant and they offered to comp an item with next order, but with the amount of restaurants in Ventura that go above and beyond on a consistent basis, there won't be one. We both have spent some time in food service so this almost double hurt knowing that we would've been a lot happier with a big order of Panda Express!!

We let the group pass us and entered the restaurant. We were promptly seated at a corner table and given menus. It did take a bit for the server to come back to take our order, but we did realize we came in 1/2 hour before closing, so we eased off a bit. My partner order the hot pot and was very happy with his choice. The server came back with a hot plate and instructed us how to cook the meat. I was a bit apprehensive about having to cook my own food, but the fragrant smell as it cooked changed my mind. The broth was flavorful and the veg and meat were tender as they soaked up the soupy goodness. I also ordered the boa buns and the pillowy texture, mixed with the soft pork and crunchy cucumber and carrots made my belly sing. We slurped up our food and cleared out as quickly as we could. I hate being that person that lingers at closing time. What I do regret is that I did not take more time at their counter as we exited because it was full of snacks and curios that I love. Next time for sure!
