Decided to take the family here as we haven't been here for many years. Thought it'd be nice to show the little one a place in Oxnard that's been around for a long time. Hunan Garden is still the same and brings back childhood memories. Greeted upon entrance, we decided to eat inside the restaurant. Waitress was very nice and attentive. Thank you. Food was delicious. Flavorful and well portioned. We all liked the egg flower soup as well as the wonton soup. We ordered fried rice, Mongolian beef, and 3 ingredients as our entrees. This place has been around forever and I've tried just about everything on the menu. The food here is tailored to a western palate and leans on the salty side. The lunch specials are generous and a good deal. But the only thing I love here is the combo egg fu young (without the sauce) - it is the best egg fu young I've had and no other one comes close. Sometimes I'll get the pineapple shrimp too, but it's usually just the egg fu young. It is perfectly cooked every single time! 5 stars just for this dish! I just had a wonderful experience at Hunan Garden in Oxnard. Came in for Take-out, right at closing, on a Cold, windy and rainy night. Very welcoming atmosphere. They were kind enough to take my order, even though the kitchen is about to close for the evening. Ordered the Bbq Pork Fried Rice. In the short time I was waiting, at least 3 customers came in for pickup orders, to me this is typically a good indicator that the food is on point . Here's the best part: when the Manager brought out my takeout order to hand me, I could clearly see a container of Egg Drop Soup in the bag along with my order. Before i could say anything, the kind lady told me that she included it for me free of charge so that I will be Warm on a rainy night. I was very much moved by this Act of Kindness so much so, that i wanted to share how sincerely happy it made me. The bbq pork fried rice was very ,very good, flavorful, fresh and satisfying. Just what i was hoping for, and more. The Egg Drop Soup did indeed warm me up, was also Delicious, and TRULY made my night SPECIAL and memorable. Thank you so much!!! read more

Hunan Garden was a unique experience and glad I finally got to try this place after so many years of driving by it and them catching my eye. My overall review of this spot would be a 3.5 but rounding up as I do. Breakdown of score: 5 stars for service / staff 3 stars for food / taste 4 stars pricing 4 stars ambiance My favorite thing about this restaurant is the service. The staff here are so incredibly nice. Sometimes you want to give a restaurant 5 stars because you adore the staff but I know you can't give that many based on service alone. However I am happy to give them credit where due. Michelle is the owner / running the business for her family. Michelle has so much experience in the restaurant business and it shows. It's a total testament to her and her commitment that this restaurant has been open for decades now. She's super passionate and proud of this business, it definitely inspired me and made me want to come back to support this business. Her staff who bus and service the tables were so nice. A young girl helped us, sorry I didn't catch her name, but she was on top of things and friendly throughout our dining experience. I like the decor of this restaurant. The outside is super cool and palatial looking. Very old school and catches your eye when driving down the boulevard. The interior was clean and welcoming. My friend and I liked the paint colors on the walls and the booths were comfortable. Menu here is pretty big. I was impressed. The prices seemed pretty good as they have weekday lunch specials and for dinner there were some good family style items and combinations. For two of us for dinner it came to about $55. We got soup, appetizers, two entrees, and a cup of fried rice each. The food had its ups and downs, hard to put my finger on it but maybe their food isn't sauced or seasoned to my usual tastebuds when it comes to the flavors of Chinese food that I like? I eat Chinese food a lot and while the ingredient were super fresh here, some of the dishes lacked depth and really profound flavors. There wasn't really a dish that was a home run for me, good dishes definitely but just not 100% what I would crave. My favorite bite honestly was their simple egg flower soup. For entrees we ordered the Mongolian beef and Szechuan pork. I thought the green onions in the beef dish were good and there was ample sauce which I normally like, the flavors however were very subdued. The fried rice also wasn't good to be to be honest. The appetizers were no frills but good. Definitely would need to give some other dishes a try in the future. Overall coming here with a friend was a good experience as customer service was great and the atmosphere was inviting and unique. However, the food is pretty middle of the road and I didn't find my perfect dish here on the first trip. Would consider coming back for a lunch special in the future as this is a thriving old school family business in Oxnard so it's nice to support them. read more

I loved this place when it was under the prior management. My husband and I went for dinner and the owner took the order wrong( beef instead o vegetable) chow mein then threw a fit because I sent the dish back. She still charged me for the more expensive dish but I didn't want to cause a scene. When we entered she was arguing with other customers should of been a sign. The food wasn't as good as it was before. My husband and I were surprised that the restaurant was so dead now we understand why. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. read more

Portions are large. Michelle was kind and friendly! Love her personality.. I didn't love the flavors but my palette is very Americanized. I really don't know authentic flavors! I did see a lot of people come in and out , so I know it's a local favorite. I know the flavors I love .. though my palette is very un trained on Chinese food but I can say ... Came by for lunch with co workers after one of them raving about how good the food was here and I am happy that we came! My work office is about a 5 min drive so this is super convenient location for me to have lunch. Came by around 12:30 pm and was seated right away. The woman who was serving us was extremely helpful and kind. The menu had a great variety and they had a lunch special menu which has great deals. After looking at their lunch menu I decided to go with the house chow mein. Portions are good! Flavor is very good and the quality and taste was very authentic. Would rate my dish a 8 out of 10. Would defenitly come back and get it again. Very satisfied with my lunch. Overall solid Chinese spot. If your looking for some good Chinese food I would definitely give them a try. I am visiting my mother and her friend from Florida. We've enjoyed Hunan Garden in the past and have received great food and service. However, this evening we visited the restaurant and received the worst service I've ever had in my adult life. The waitress deliberately ignored us and our order was not correct. When we brought this to the attention of the owner, she proceeded to argue and yell at us in front of the entire restaurant and other patrons. It was embarrassing to say the least, not to mention rude and unprofessional. Needless to say, when I visit Oxnard again, I will be taking my business elsewhere. We said we didn't mind waiting for something to open up since we've been there before and owner knows my daughters since they were little. My daughters (2) were by the fish tank and she was rude telling them to move o hr of the way after the fact that we were already telling them to sit down. The dish had none of that but it had a lot of water chestnuts, which I don't even like. I called, but, they blamed DoorDash, raised their voice, and became argumentative. No apology, no responsibility, no offer of compensation. They said, Call DoorDash. Item #2 Shrimp in Lobster sauce. They must have used flour to thicken a sauce that had thin strands of chicken in it. Pretty awful, nothing to do with lobster. It did have overcooked shrimp. Actually, it was disgusting, and I threw it away. They shouldn't argue with a customer whose dinner was ruined. What a hassle. I will not order from them again. It was the first and last time. This is use to be my favorite place to go. Been going for years. Use to deer on door dash every week too. The last time I went last year the food was not good at all. I decided to give it another chance. I ordered sweet and sour pork and it was disgusting. The balls were soggy (which was the problem last time too) but the worst of it was it had zero flavor. Like they cooked the whole thing with no salt or season what so ever. It was like if you boiled pork and ate it straight from the pot. The food was delicious and the service was above and beyond. The potions are generous. We had the House Special Fried rice ( full of meat and shrimp), pan-fried dumplings, and Mu-shoo chicken. The server packed up the leftovers really nicely, at the table, So much nicer than throwing you a box, extra points for this. Private parking lot and I can see my car clearly while eating, also a huge plus. They serve all day with no break between lunch and dinner, which I love (because we tend to eat a late lunch and a light dinner) They do a consistent take out business and appeared to be regular customers. Typical dated expected Chinese decor. It looks familiar because there is at least one like this in every town. Unfortunately some kind of little gnats infringed on our otherwise lovely meal. My favorite authentic Chinese restaurant. I've been coming here since I was a little girl. The owners have always been the sweetest. I wish I knew their names. When my husband, our kids or myself start getting sick, we order the War Wonton Soup. It is MASSIVE! Such a bang for your buck! It can feed us all, it is delicious and OOOOOOH SOOOO GOOD FOR YOU!! Packed full of vitamins, antioxidants and TONS of flavor!! When we start to feel like we might be coming down with something, this soup is like: ALL HANDS ON DECK. I can't say it "cures us" but it sure does help us feel better SO much faster than when we let stuff run through its course. PS: I am a SUCKER for egg drop soup, and the owner once said "it tastes so much better with fried won tons" and boy did it! I order it like that ALL the time now. Four different generations of my family have gone here. My aunt Rachel is the one who introduced my grandparents and I to this place. And I'm pleased to pass on the tradition of excellent Chinese cuisine to my children. Wow such terrible service. Been really holding out on this review for a while, but this last time there I have to put them on blast. We've been more than a few times. Once the waitress got on us cause my son 3 years old or so (now 5) was playing with a small toy car on the table and they said "stop dat, it scratch" but there was no scratches. It's a hot wheel toy, come on. They gave such bad service after that, so we didn't tip as well due to such bad service. Food is also just decent. Rubbery and bland. Another time (recently) we had sun blaring in the face, so we moved tables but they said no cause it's for more people, but no one was there. They said you go now we no serve you. Wow, ok. I have been a customer of this restaurant for many years. Lately, the food has not been as good as in the past. Today, I took my daughter visiting from Florida there for dinner. We ordered 3 dishes, one with 3 meats (chicken, beef & shrimp). I asked the waitress to please make the chicken all white meat. When the dish arrived, no beef, no shrimp; just chicken. I did NOT ask that the other meats be eliminated in favor of all chicken. Instead of apologizing and quietly fixing the problem, one of the owners, Michelle, blamed me for the mistake and yelled at me in the presence of other diners before reluctantly replacing the dish prepared correctly. Thereafter, through the entire meal, the waitress ignored our table while being overly-attentive to the tables around us. We finally just got up, paid and left. I have never been treated so poorly by a local business. I will NEVER go there again after being embarrassed in front of my visiting daughter, who was left with a VERY poor impression of Oxnard because of this. I STRONGLY recommend eating at the Mandarin House restaurant on Channel Islands Blvd. instead where the food is better and the service far more cordial and welcoming. read more

I didn't really like the food at all. I was expecting much more but I've had better. There isn't much variety on the menu, it's also very overpriced. They have a weird rule with "sharing" drinks. If the customer is paying for a drink with their own money, they are allowed to do whatever they please. That just threw me off. They said no booths are available, there was many empty, ready to be seated. When paying, the older lady "accidentally" charged us 50$ more than what we owed for the food. We have been ordering take out from Hunan for 25+ years. The food is always good! I understand prices have gone up but $13 for a box of fried rice is nuts!! They now charge for a side of chili sauce (.50) which used to be free! We had an order of $65 and they would not throw in 1 sauce!
