Super delicious spot. Came for New Year's with a party of five and we were able to get seated immediately without a reservation. Parking was a little tight but we made it. Restaurant is well-decorated and clean, felt like an upscale place. Our waiter warned us service would be a bit slow as the restaurant was brimming. There's a large menu, where you seemingly can't go wrong with any dish that you order. I really loved the century egg, the fish, and the pork with dried radish. We were thinking of grabbing Indian this cold rainy day but actually wanted to try something a little different and new. We heard about this place recently and decided it was worth the 50 minute drive. GUYS- ALMOST ONE HOUR DRIVE and I'm looking forward to doing it again. Read to find out why. Keep in mind, my husband and I are pretty adventurous so we wanted to try some funky things on the menu a standard American would not normally eat. Here's what we ordered. Food: Starters. 1.) Thin sliced pork belly with spicy sauce. YUM! I've never heard of fresh steamed pork belly. It's served on this cute bamboo mini drying rack. Not only a pleasant display but delicious and flavorful. The dipping sauce was unlike anything I've ever had. Chili, not too spicy, oily goodness. 2.) Preserved Eggs, I'm not sure where to begin with these. They look very interesting and are possibly my favorite appetizer I've ever eaten. They texture is marvelous but not for the faint of heart as the eggs do look 'preserved.' But once you bite into these jellicious love pockets, you wont regret it. A seriously delicious unique dish. Main Course. 1.) I ordered the frog hot plate. Now this dish is spicy, the type that will burn your mouth off, but in a sick and twisted way, I loved it. The only thing I'd mention is it had a LOT of tiny bones. Something to keep in mind as Hunan Food is served different then most foods I'm used too. I should of asked about how the frog was served as I could of done without the mini bones. 2.) The Beef Elbow. You read that right, BEEF ELBOW. Guys, I can't even begin to describe this dish. It was like a creamy coated, tender, fall of the bone beef joint of heaven (ha!). I highly-highly recommend trying this dish. It was massive and one of a kind delicious. We ordered it 'not too spicy.' We had pleanty to take home and enjoy later too. Dessert. We ordered the red beans pastries. I actually grew up having the Korean version of these so I knew what these were going to taste like for the most part. Their little drizzle of honey on top of these cuties sends them home with the gold. Atmosphere: The place is super charming. They have lovely architecture and a homey feel. I think the waistaff is the luck of draw. Some of the staff seem to be missing as much charismatic abilities as others but I do think it's a language barrier. It seemed like this restaurant attracts a lot of native Hunan folks, so I can't blame them for hiring some staff to support that! Party of 11 walks in on a Monday afternoon. No we didn't make reservations and somehow was able to fit ourselves in their small dedicated parking lot. Staff did not try to hide their annoyance. Not tons of customers but they didn't want to merge some tables together for us so we were squashed in one round table in the back. They do have high chairs so that was good for the kiddo. We ordered 10 dishes, which came with 10 bowls of rice. We're mostly northerners, so only 3 of our dishes were actually spicy, and maybe that's why, but most things ranged from bland to tasteless. And the spicy ones (the good stuff) was too much for us. The better ones were basket popcorn chicken (spicy) and the pork belly chunks (lightly sweetened). Their also known for their shredded potato (with egg yolk), and the favorite was alcoholic tapioca desert soup, but I didn't have any. The hanging white meat rack and the riced baby back ribs were the least popular. And the spicy rice noodle was like 90% peppers (for flavor) and not much actual substance. Overall there's not much good finds for a large, non-spice enjoying party, but its fast, cheap, and local to the area. Everyone, meet my son, his middle name is "Spicy". Yes, he loves anything spicy and this is his favorite restaurant. If he could eat here everyday, he would. We have been coming here for years. The owner is very nice and the staff, well, I am biased about them. I read lots of negative reviews on service but for me, they are the most darling group of guys that always make sure that we have a wonderful meal each time we dine here. I know them all by name. I strongly recommend that you order from their regular menu. Their lunch menu is fine but to truly taste their amazing dishes, you should order from the regular menu if this is your first time here. The reason why we love eating here, the chef has a knack for picking the right chili peppers for each dish that he creates. You might order three different spicy dishes but each dish will surprise you. One might be a numbing spice, another with a hint of sweetness and another might not hit you in the back of the tongue until later. Aside from the regular menu, there is a separate menu that the chef has created. I think he likes to experiment with creating new dishes. Tonight, we tried one of his newest creations, Trio of Mushrooms Stew Pork Tripe. There was a kick to it which was surprisingly delish with a hint of ginger. We have just about tried every dish on the menu. There are a few misses for us, but overall, all the other dishes are amazing. My family is Hunanese and they believe it's only spicy enough if you're actually sweating at the table while eating. We ordered the water boiled fish, sautéed string beans, sour string beans with pork, Chinese bacon with leeks, spicy noodles, and the smoked duck. The dishes were all cooked very well. Everything was very spicy and flavorful. I especially like the string bean dishes and the duck. The duck skin was perfectly crispy. The portions were large since it's a Chinese restaurant after all. Good authentic food and decent prices. Hunanese cuisine is somewhat under appreciated in the states though it is famous in China. My grandma used to cook it authentic for me when I was a kid. Its a bit different from Sichuan food. Less grease. Less of that numbing hot Sichuan peppercorn. For hunanese food I remember lots of freshly diced peppers, pickled veggies and surprisingly tasty off the beaten path stuff like pig ears and Chinese beef jerky. This restaurant is pretty authentic from what I can tell. Braised pork aka hong sao ro is probably the gold standard to judge a Hunan restaurant. It was consistently very tasty here. Super tender and just the right amount of flavor. No gameyness or meat pungency. Pretty decent price point too. $14.95 for a big dish. This restaurant is great when it comes to the reasonable prices for the good quality food. They are well run and have restaurants in Manhattan and Flushing. One exception to the good prices is the veggie dishes. I think I saw stir fried cabbage on the menu for $12. No thanks. I'll munch an apple when I get home. They have an delicious and unique eggplant with preserved egg yolk dish. Not the healthiest eggplant dish ever but yummy for sure. Spicy fish in chili sauce soup is pretty standard Sichuan fare you can get at any number of Sichuan restaurants. I'm not the biggest fan because of the high grease level and the overwhelming peppercorn numbing hot flavor. I much preferred the stinky tofu with minced pork and chili. The tofu wasn't overwhelmingly stinky but the overall taste was great. These little stir fried dishes with fresh diced chili and veggies and meat capture the heart of Hunan cooking. Neon lights shine through the curvatures in the ceiling to create a dim yet moody atmosphere. Service was somewhat quick and non-descript; there wasn't much opportunity for questions or conversation. The food, in general, is well-made, balanced, and flavorful. One of my favorites was the pork belly with preserved vegetables- the wilted dark vegetables soaked up the savory juices of the pork to give a salty and savory flavor punch on top of a delectably soft, tender cut of pork. My friends and I didn't even plan to come to this place. We went to another restaurant and the wait was too long. I looked up another restaurant we could go to and I found this gem by fluke. You would never believe it's as nice as it is on the inside from the outside. It definitely gives off that "fine dining" ambiance. We were automatically seated. I was invited to dinner by a couple of friends who told me that this was a Michelin star restaurant. Say no more, I'm in there like swimwear. I walked in, and the first thing I noticed was that there was no host/hostess helping with seating. I essentially walked in and sat myself down where my friends were. We were offered a complimentary pot of tea, but were not asked if we wanted any drinks at all. On top of that, we waited 15-20 minutes, and even then we flagged down our waiter to take our order. People that came in after us had already gotten their orders. One of my friends ordered the Hunan Chicken, another friend had gotten the Pork Soup Dumplings, and I also got the Pork Soup Dumplings with scallion pancakes. The scallion pancakes came out within about 10 minutes, but the rest of our food took a bit to come out. Keep in mind that we still hadn't been asked what drinks we wanted. My friend that had ordered the Hunan Chicken thought the chicken tasted was fresh. However, it was not spicy, as advertised. Additionally, she found a caterpillar (wish I was making this up) in her food, which is certainly more protein than she bargained for. They took it back to the kitchen and did not charge for her for it. She ended up ordering scallion pancakes as a substitute, but hers came out greasier than mine did. I thought that, sans the grease, the scallion pancakes were probably the better part of the meal. Finally, the pork dumplings. Honestly, I've had better. It was a strange texture - very hard to bite into, and not as soupy as other dumplings I've had. Perhaps I'm not well versed on what dumplings should taste like, but this didn't seem right. The sauce that came with it certainly didn't help either. At one point, I was just eating not for enjoyment, but because I didn't want to waste the food. My other friend who had the dumplings felt the same way. After all of this, we still had no drinks to wash down what I felt was a mediocre meal. Once again we had to flag down a waiter to get a check, which no one had come to pick. After 15 or so minutes we had to walk it up to the cashier/host area to finish the transaction. All in all, I truly found this dining experience to be a let down. It may have been MIchelin recommended, but I will not recommending this place anytime soon. There is a lot of improvement to be made here. In the meantime, if you're looking for a soup dumpling fix, drive further down 27 and go to Shanghai Dumpling House. read more

My mom ordered (so I don't know what the dishes' names are, or how much they were) an appetizer of sliced beef, as well as some type of cold and sliced cucumber in dressing. We also got an egg dish,a big pot of soup with some chicken in it, and a fried fish. The sliced beef appetizer was pretty good. It had solid flavor and was not overly dry. The cucumbers were also nice, and the cold and crunchy textures provided a nice bite. The egg dish was horrible. Lacking any and all flavor, I would never get it again. The soup with chicken was interesting. At first there's not much flavor, but you keep coming back because the flavor is strong enough to get you hooked. It's light and tasty and easy to just keep sipping. Comes in a big cauldron looking thing. Lastly, the fish. It came with a ton of chili peppers and garlic on top of it, all of which we scooped off. Despite being bathed in chili, the meat wasn't very spicy (which is fine with me!). However, it wasn't very tasty, either. The fish was very crunchy, but I suspect the fish wasn't fresh so the crunchiness hid that fact. All in all, I guess I would come back. Certainly wouldn't be a first choice by any means, but it's decent. On revisit, I found the service particularly disappointing. The food continued to be very salty, but this is a minor point. There was a broad sense of resignation and capped effort by multiple staff members to address any issue we brought up including delayed dishes and inquiries about their preparation. For all the staff present, there is an incredible absence altogether. Tea needs to be frequently requested. The bill needed to be self-brought to the front register since all the staff eating in the back have forgotten you're there. Someone is on his laptop. Most notably our braised pork was an insulting experience, whereby more than half out slices were entirely of fat. Personally, I've developed a craving for this place that urges me to order from them at least once a month. However, Chinese food encompasses a wide range of local specialties and people from different regions would also have specific tastes/preferences, so it can be a little irresponsible to say Hunan Manor is the best Chinese restaurant. For that reason, I would only say it's the top three Chinese restaurants within a 30-minute driving distance. They surely combined the authenticity with the deliciousness quite well; many dishes are exactly what you should expect if you are dining in China. Definitely recommend this place if you want to try some authentic, spicy yet tasty Chinese food. While she was expecting a mix of many vegetables as is the standard at every other restaurant, The vegetables were only broccolli and a few pieces of peppers. That is it.
