Great spot!! I'm in town visiting friends and I'm staying alone in a hotel. I was wanting an egg roll and some fried rice and theirs hit the spot. One guy is host, waiter and server. He is nice but it too longer than I wanted. You get crispy pieces and sweet and sour sauce as your "chips and salsa." Hot tea and water are also brought out. I ordered fried wontons and was expecting Rangoon. Not what I received. Not bad but not what I ordered and not great. It's fried breading with a little meat of some kind. Our party of five ordered: * Fried Chicken Wings (2 orders): $16 * Spring Rolls (2 orders): $3.50 * Won Ton Soup (quart): $4 * Chicken with Broccoli: $12.50 * Vegetable Fried Rice: $8.50 * Chicken with Snow Peas: $7.50 * Chicken Cashew: $12.50 Total with tax: $68. The dinner portions were substantial, there was easily enough food left over for everyone to have lunch. I don't eat Chinese food often because I find the sauces too heavy or too salty, but Hong Kong Garden's sauces were light and I found the dishes very tasty and not too salty. The chicken wings were excellent, juicy and nicely cooked. The were not heavily fried, which is my personal preference. The chicken was tender in all three chicken dishes, but especially so for the Chicken with Snow Peas. My favorite dish was the Chicken Cashew, I thought the sauce was nicely executed. We typically order shrimp egg foo young with sauce on the side, egg lo mein, veggie fried rice, orange chicken, sesame chicken, sautéed bok choy, and chicken and broccoli. This spot is a no frills but hits every single time type of place. They've got all your standard Chinese-American dishes and they all taste so delicious! The food at Hong Kong Garden is wildly inconsistent. I had been there a few times years ago and wasn't impressed with the food but liked it well enough. I'm also active on the neighborhood app Nextdoor, and someone new to town asked what everyone's favorite local Chinese restaurant was. An overwhelming number of responses named Hong Kong Garden, and the high praise made my family and I want to give it another try last month. We were impressed! We got a variety of dishes and savored them all, with the General Tso's Chicken being a stand out. Last week we were craving that amazing General Tso's Chicken, so I called in a take out order. The chicken was so chewy, stringy, and dry that we threw it out. Just awful. My husband even questioned if I had possibly gone to another restaurant by mistake since the quality of this dish was a world away from what we'd been served a couple weeks before. Will I give Hong Kong Garden another chance? Maybe next year. read more

We were craving Chinese food (okay, I really wanted New Jersey beef chow fun), and found this place that was not too far from our hotel. The service was good. We were promptly greeted and sat down upon entering. I ordered the shrimp toast and beef chow fun. Sadly the food was not up to expectations. The shrimp toast was too greasy, and the beef chow fun needed more seasoning. Hong Kong Garden was recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad that I decided to give it a try! I called in an order for 7 people around lunch time. I was initially hesitant to do this, but the person who took my order was happy to have my business. He repeated back the entire order to make sure it was accurate and said it would only take 20-25 minutes. Upon arrival the staff was extremely nice. I expected to wait a little but my order was already waiting for me in the front! We went over the order and receipt to double check that I had everything. I was so pleased with the service that I tried to leave a cash tip & it was declined. Instead of a tip I was told to come back again! I ordered the lunch portion of the broccoli in garlic sauce and it was absolutely delicious. The portions are the perfect size for lunch. I will definitely be a returning customer! I came back here for another takeout meal. This time 4 items were tried, which are below. Sa-Cha Beef ($12.95) - This consisted of beef sautéed in water chestnuts, red peppers, and broccoli in a Sa-Cha sauce. This was categorized as a spicy dish, but was not at all. It was still good and flavorful. The beef was tender and sauce was appetizing. Wonton Soup ($4) - The dumplings were filled and cooked appropriately, no complaints regarding this. Roast Pork Lo Mein ($8.95) - The noodles were somewhat dry, but adding sauces from various dishes helped that aspect. There was plenty of pork present in the dish. Amazing local spot for basic and authentic Chinese food. Growing up in NYC we have those 5 star spots. But don't let anyone ever tell you that you can't find good quality Chinese food elsewhere, yet alone a smaller town like Franklin twp. Service is great as well. Consistent for take out orders. The rice could've used a little more soy sauce/salt but the egg roll and chicken w/broccoli were AMAZING! Everything was ready within 10 minutes and the food was still hot once I got home. It is located in a strip mall that doesn't look great, but walk inside and you will be delighted. As we sat down and had a nice pot of tea and very crispy noodles. We went with the 'family dinner' for 2. Soup - hot and sour soup was tasty a little thicker that I really like, but would order it again. Soup - wonton was excellent, the broth was very tasty and the wontons had a good bite to them. Egg roll - a little on the bland side Dinner - chicken chow mein was delicate and tasty. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and the chicken was tender. Dinner - hunan triple delight- the beef and chicken were also cooked perfectly, fork tender. The shrimp were nicely cooked. I arrived on a Friday night with some vegetarians and the owner gave us some off-menu items (tofu, green beans and eggplant) that are only on the Chinese menu. That was tasty. The appetizers also has some vegetarian choices: scallion pancakes, veg dumplings and another tofu dish. We ordered veg chow mein and cod in black pepper sauce, which came light battered and in a spicy sauce. Black pepper seems to be popular in this part of NJ as it's the 2nd spot that serves fish/shrimp like that. Overall, the best Chinese food in the area, but not a traditionally classic Cantonese menu. This is a OK place to get Chinese food in the Somerset area. I would not get the egg rolls though, they're extremely GREASY. The customer service sucks! The person who answered rushed me when I was making my order. Constantly asking " is that all ?" I ordered the lunch combo shrimp and broccoli that comes with white rice and your choice of soup & a egg roll. That was it . but he made it seem like I was taking up a lot of time. Also, THEY DO NOT DO DELIVERY. When I went to pick it up, no one was at the front. When I walked in and said " hello?" Someone walked up and seemed very irritated that I was there. THEY WERE SITTING IN THE BACK OF THE RESTAURANT AND SAW ME WALK IN SO IM NOT UNDERSTANDING THE FRUSTRATION The 1 star is for how hot my food was and the fresh/crunchiness of the broccoli. Still my go to place for Chinese food. Recently, we catered from them twice and it was a hit! And the most convenient thing was that they only required me to call a couple hours beforehand, whereas most places make you reserve a day or more in advance. I love the family atmosphere there.
