Overall, this was a disappointing experience and not what I expected based on the positive reviews. I would rate the meal around a 3 out of 10. The pork fried rice was extremely bland and had no real flavor, it mostly just tasted oily. The white rice was standard and fine, nothing notable. The sweet and sour chicken pieces were actually good and had a nice chicken flavor, which was one of the few positives. Unfortunately, the boneless barbecue ribs also lacked flavor and tasted old and dry.(barely any sauce) The chicken and broccoli combo was especially disappointing. The container was almost entirely filled with the same flavorless pork fried rice, with only about seven pieces of broccoli and a few pieces of chicken. The chicken looked undercooked, slimy, and very pale, with little to no color. There was also barely any brown sauce in the container, which made the dish even more bland. The General Tso's chicken combo was okay, but once again it was overwhelmed by the same tasteless rice. I tried this place because of the good reviews, but it did not live up to the hype at all. Decided to order from Ming's after hearing a recommendation from a family member whose opinion on food is valued. Order was easily placed by phone, and pickup was efficient. The counter for pickup overlooks the busy kitchen. There are small tables with chairs to use if you are waiting for your order. My order was ready in the time frame promised. Parking was tricky from the corner place since it is only available on the side street. Since the parking spots closest to the entrance were taken, I had to walk with the heavy bag further than is comfortable for me. I usually park in a handicap spot since I have a handicap sticker. Next time I will ask if it is okay to park in the driveway in the back of the restaurant. Order: Appetizer: The Singapore Chicken Lo Mein appetizer was tasty. It is a generous portion, and my SIL says she eats it as a meal. Not me. My order of a Chef's Special: Dragon and Phoenix was outstanding! Two dishes in one: jumbo shrimp sautéed in a nice hot and spicy sauce balanced with General Tso's Chicken on the other side. Perfect for my taste since I like both dishes and to have them available as one choice was convenient. The accompanying sauce was delicious over the fluffy white rice. Husband enjoyed the Hunan Chicken with Vegetables and the Wonton Soup. The wontons were meatier than most and the broth was browner. We both have leftovers for lunch tomorrow which is nice. And we have the two free Eggrolls which were included in our order by the proprietor. We plan to order from here again to try other favorite dishes. Then we can truly give our opinion on the food. The first time that I ordered was not very good. I got crab rangoon and chicken lo mein. I figured lo mein is about as basic as you can get so if they couldn't get that right there was no hope. The crab rangoon was bland and tasted mostly like cream cheese. After a long break and needing some variety from our usual spot we gave them another try and was pleasantly surprised with the general tsos chicken and egg rolls. Most recently I got the chicken and broccoli and both times have been better than that first so Ming will be in our rotation going forward. I hope the next dishes I try are just as good. read more

I stopped at Ming's Chinese Restaurant for lunch takeout, which is located at the corner of State Street and Chiswell Street. I ordered the Shrimp Lo Mein Lunch Special ($4.95 plus tax) served with pork fried rice and wonton soup. The food was cooked fresh to order quickly in the open kithcen. The portion of food was generous for the price. The lo mein noodles were soft (slightly overcooked)tossed with tender shrimp and vegetables. The pork fried rice (golden) was cooked just right with tender roast pork cubes, onions, and firm rice. The wonton soup had big 3 pork wontons with tender roast pork strips, scallions, and a heaty chicken broth. All of the food was very tasty and I had enough leftovers for dinner. Everything was absolutely disgusting. I ordered a beef and mixed veggie combo w spring roll on the side . The sauce that the beef was in was disgusting it tasted like it went bad . All the veggies tasted like they were just pulled from the dirt . The spring rolls we mushy as hell on the inside . Looked like a veggie purée spring roll . Never again . The pieces of beef w just plain weird . They should tryna new business or something because that was like the worst Chinese I ever had. Note, this is a cash only business. I eat here 4 or 5 times a year. Usually get cashew chicken or pork lomein or beef and broccolli. I find the food to be good enough to recommend. The prices are reasonable. Dinner with an egg roll and a can of soda under ten bucks. I noticed most of the poor reviews are older, so maybe things have changed for the better. I walk over and dine in, and while I'm there, they do a brisk business of take out orders. Some definitely family size. Can't be that bad. The lady at the counter is friendly, the place is clean, and the food is served piping hot. The portions are large. They have a television to watch while eating or waiting. I've only tried one other place in mid town and mings is better. If you haven't been yet, check it out. It is what it is, this is not a 5 star restaurant. Last straw, I've been a customer for years the food is good the service is below par. I would prefer to have a clueless teenager wait on me then a rude adult who should know better. I must say is it pretty expensive here. Not sure why it's so expensive but for what you get it is pretty expensive you can go to other Chinese restaurants and get things for probably a little cheaper then what you'll get it here but the taste is phenomenal. There is no off-street parking you have to go and pick it up there are tables inside that you can sit at to eat but there are very few so it's mainly just a takeout place. It is quite busy here and seems to buzz along quite nicely so the food is always made fresh never has time to sit around that's for sure. I like the fact that you can see then working in the back on your order and you can see how it is being made that is quite a neat little idea. Please remember to bring your cash though because no credit cards are accepted here only cash. We made that mistake one time because it was not advertised and quite embarrassing. I used to be turned off by places that are cash only and don't do delivery. However, if I've learned anything in my life so far, THOSE are the restaurants you pay attention to. This place lacks some things, most importantly the taste of the food. Their food is OK. The food is rather bland and needs more seasoning. The dumplings are thick with little meat. Since my favorite Chinese restaurant recently closed after 25+ years I am now looking for a new place. I had heard good reviews on Mings hot and sour soup and that is my go-to when I am sick so that is what I went for yesterday, plus an order of fried wontons. First, they only take cash but you don't know this until you are up to the counter. Second, the prices are a bit higher than other take out places I've been to. Third, they completely ignored my fiance and me for about 3 minutes. Not even a greeting. As for the food... There are 2 things I definitely expect in hot and sour soup... That it is hot and sour. Both of these were missing. It was very bland. The fried wontins were hard and you can tell by the texture that they were prefrozen. All in all, not the best food or experience. I have been ordering from Ming's at 1888 State Street, for a number of years. Something definitely changed recently and tonight confirmed our fears...the original owners are gone! The food has changed drastically. I ordered the chicken egg foo young and it was not only floating in grease, it was tasteless! The crab Rangoon looked and tasted like nothing I used to get, and the other dishes we ordered were not any better. There is such an unbelievably noticeable difference that I searched on google tonight only to find that the original owners retired, well that explains alot! Not only did it take forever for the order to get done, the food is not the same, and the service is subpar. I am going to really miss Pang and Ming, the original owners, and I will no longer be getting my Chinese food fix from Ming's at 1888 State Street in Schenectady. I've had just about everything on the menu; but what I keep coming back to is the General Tao Shrimp, it's two die for! I'm also a big fan of all their Lo Miens, some the best in town.
