Great food to chicken paprikash is great The stuffed cabbage was incredible and the service is fantastic.

I come here for winter comfort food fixes and have only praises for their chicken paprikash, fried pork chops, and beef and mushroom stroganoff (Fridays only, I believe). Their dishes are heavy--as in most things come out battered, gravy covered, and sour creamed--so, if that's your thing, this is the place for you. Prices are more reasonable at lunch and all entrees come with salad and bread. There is something very charming about The Rhapsody. Refills on soft drinks, a ritz cracker and cheese spread appetizer (I forget the name, but it's addicting), and the most sour creamy sweet and savory cucumber salad....mmm...yummy textures of fat and cream goodness. Just note though, dining here is like being hit with a tranquilizer dart because after your meal, you will get very very sleepy...it's the gravy and dumpling coma. The comments on bottled-tasting dressing (note: the thousand island) and not-so-fresh veggies are spot on. They do taste frozen and you're not logging any fitness points for eating here. However, if you can overlook nutrition for one meal, which I'm assuming you are if you're craving amazing stroganoff, then eat here to warm you up, not to diet. I always walk out a few pounds heavier and happier. read more

We love to go here for chicken paprikash anytime or for a special treat on a Thursday night , their roast duck dinner is awesome. Once a month they do a special duck dinner that you have to make a special reservation for . For those watching their waist they have some great fish dishes , but they are definitely into heavy sauced dishes. The decor is unique and Hungarian rustic. For all the months that they stayed open through Covid, their quality never diminished. They ran great specials, and the young staff that brought the food out were very professional and pleasant. I tipped well because I wanted to help them have a reason to stay open. The Chicken Paprika's is some of the best I've ever had, and I've never had a bad meal from there. I was spending the afternoon downriver and sought the wise counsel of Yelp in selecting a place to have lunch. When I came across this place, I couldn't resist. It's not every day one comes across a Hungarian restaurant. AND it has a positive review by Liz W????? I'M THERE!! The restaurant has folksy decor with a definite senior citizen vibe. There are all sorts of Hungarian crafts decorating the place, including some extraordinarily creepy dolls wearing traditional Hungarian garb. Thankfully, I was seated out of view of the dolls. I started with the cucumber/sour cream salad ($2 upcharge) because .... why not? I was looking for Hungarian food, and I can have a "regular" salad anywhere. It needed a bit of salt, but was otherwise quite tasty. I had a tough time deciding what to order for my entree, but ultimately decided on the chicken paprikas. I got a couple of pieces of chicken (half of a breast and a leg) served atop a plateful of nokedli (spaetzel-like dumplings) covered in a creamy, dreamy paprika sauce. While I would have liked a little more paprika, It was scrumptious, filling comfort food. I had two minor gripes: (1) the only sweetener they stock is saccharin. (2) They have a little counter that you go to in order to pay your bill, but you can't actually pay your bill there. Rather, the girl at the counter takes your bill and money to the bar at the other end of the restuarant, locates your waitress, and then your waitress cashes out the transaction. Not particularly efficient, especially when there are a few people waiting to pay their bill. (This also got me back in view of the creepy dolls.) I was way too full to check out the desserts. Attention: Ladies and gentlemen an update is necessary and totaly required. I LOVE and I mean love the Hungarian Rhapsody. I have been craving that sauerkraut from this place for like two weeks. Today I couldn't take it anymore and had to go. I am such a creature of habit, I always get the same thing the combination plate. Chicken paprikash, stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut, breaded pork chop, mashed potatoes and a lovely vegetable medley. Well today I stepped out the box a bit and 86'd that pork chop for an extra stuffed cabbage...how's that for some adventure? I like the pork chop but man that stuffed cabbage is what dreams are made of..no joke it is delightfully delicious and coupled with that sauerkraut..oh my heaven. I also ordered a side of that sauerkraut cause I just can't get enough. Needless to say I really enjoyed my meal. My sidekick got a burger. The ham and bacon cheeseburger for 7.95 I must say that burger was impressive! The only issue was it came out well done when ordered medium rare. I told our server, she apologized and offered a new one, we declined not a huge deal. Well after such a lovely meal our server comes out with a complimentary dessert, not sure what it was but OMG delicious some kind of vanilla cream custard layered between phyllo dough sprinkled with powder sugar...all I can say is wow! This place is a step back into my grandmother's kitchen in Pittsburgh, PA. Come back in time with me as we celebrate Eastern European cuisine at its finest. We ventured out here on my birthday after watching Lions training camp and it was a great decision. We were seated promptly to nice ice cold water. Because it was Scotty Appreciation Day, I was pleased to know that they have a full bar on hand with low beer prices and a TON of different beers in the house, both bottle and draft. The beer was cold and fresh. They definitely clean their taps. The waitress this evening was very nice and she knew her stuff. Any question about the menu you had, she knew. Perfect service. My meal came with a nice salad. It was tasty and refreshing on a nice hot day. The Main Event came out next, Chicken Paprikash. Chicken cooked perfectly, both juicy and tender. The Spaetzle was cooked to perfection. Some places serve their spaetzle a wee bit too "al-dente," not here, it was cooked absolutely 100% perfectly. The sauce was beyond perfection. I never ever finish my plate. I like to carry a doggie's box back home with me so I can repast later after some ab crunches, but I cleaned my plate bare. That right there is a testament to how yummy the food was. The homie Melchor cleaned his plate too G! The food was tremendous. The check came back and the prices were beyond reasonable for what you get. The Hungarian doll collection in the front, by the way, was awesome! I grew up eating Hungarian food made by my grandma. Cut me and I'll bleed paprika sauce. I love me my paprikas, galumpkis and nokedli. Hungarian Rhapsody makes all of those and more, including succulent breaded pork chops, goulash and kolbasz. Recently, I attended a family reunion at Rhapsody, arranged by my cousin who was in town for several days to get together with family & friends. The Rhapsody staff set up a long table for us. No loud background music to shout over. Attentive wait staff. We had a family-style all you can eat banquet with chicken paprikas, pork chops and stuffed cabbage. Sides were green beans, mashed potatoes and dumplings. My cousin and I were thrilled that they also brought out a separate bowl of paprika sauce so that we could dump this flavorful essence generously all over our plates. My husband noted that my version of chicken paprikas has more paprika flavor and a thicker sauce. Yes, that is true, but I did not have to lift a finger, and this version is also very good. The delicate lemony aspect of the true Hungarian sweet paprika still comes through. Just like a visit to grandma's house, you get to take home delicious leftovers. Our waiter brought out containers and our family divided the remains of our feast. Hubby was very happy to snag himself some future lunches to warm up at work. After we were full of Hungarian goodness, there was dessert: rum cake. It was mercifully light after our ethnic gorge-fest. I have lived downriver for 36 years and have wanted to try this restaurant many times, just never got around to it. My friend and I went for lunch Friday. There were some customers, but they weren't busy. Our server was Michelle and she was awesome, friendly and helpful. The table setting was very pretty with what looked like hand embroidered runners under glass. The food was very good, served piping hot. Breaded pork chops, stuffed cabbage, chicken paprikas, snitzel & gravy-all very good and the strudel we had for dessert was go good. My only concern was, and this might sound trivial, but the window sills were so very dirty, and once seen, can't be unseen. I must say I am a little biased. A family friend owns this place and we have been coming here for over 20 years. The atmosphere is family casual and has paintings of different places in Hungary and hand made embroidered table cloths. My favorite dishes are the stuffed cabbage and fried pork chops. In my opinion, they have the best stuffed cabbage I have ever had at anywhere. That's saying a lot because I have been to Hungary. I always order all dumplings instead of half potatoes. I also enjoy the simple but soothing chicken soup. Their dessert tray is a must see and all are homemade in house. I prefer the chocolate rum torte cake but all the desserts are very good. The have a full bar with with a decent selection. Prices are around $12-15 per dinner that includes a salad and two sides (my vote is all dumplings). They offer a lunch special that's around $9 and is a half portion that comes with a salad. I'm not sure if the lunch special is offered on the weekends but runs until 4pm during the week. I went here for a banquet and had the opportunity to try several things. Their salad was OK but nothing special about it. The white bread they serve is pretty good which reminds of the french bread you get in Europe. The Kolbasz and sauerkraut was my favorite dish, definitely the best sauerkraut I've had. Very flavorful and supposedly one of their best dishes. The roasted chicken was OK but I didn't think it was all that flavorful. Their mashed potatoes was also OK but I would have liked it to be more creamy and have more flavors. The dessert was quite good, I'm not sure what it was but I liked it. The owner ignored my request to relocate the COVID contact trace sheet because it was located less than two feet from seated patrons who were not masked because they were seated at their table but were within breathing distance, (and one of the ladies was coughing), so the owner said that he was not going to move it cause it would eliminate one seating spot and if I did not like it I could leave, so I left and I will never ever return to an establishment that places sales over peoples safety. read more

Every summer my parents would pack up myself, my two brothers and my grandfather, and head to Michigan for our summer vacation every year. We would visit, Dundee, Tecumseh and head to The Hungarian Rhapsody for a special dinner, every time. I hadn't been here in almost 10 years due to my grandfather passing away and just other life events getting in the way. Knowing that I was going to be up in this area for work, I made it a point to stop here to reminisce. Even though I only had time to stop in and pick up my lunch to go. The décor hadn't changed much in 10 years. the iconic wagon filled with flowers still proudly sits at the front entrance. Inside the little room with Hungarian dolls, tablecloths and other souvenirs still are displayed for all to see as well. There are some amazing wall murals of various Hungarian landmarks in the dining room as well. My cucumber salad was as creamy and flavorful, just as I remember so many years ago. My entrée was the Turos Teszta (old world noodles in cottage cheese, with bacon as an option). This was a simple but good dish. If you're not a vegetarian like myself, definitely go for the Goulash or of course, the Chicken Paprikash. No matter what, you have to get the Kremes for dessert. First of all, I would give it a 3.5 but I'll bump it up to a four because it does seem like they try. My favorite part of the meal was the dessert. I might just come back here just for the dessert! Summary: As another reviewer said, do not come here expecting all fresh ingredients used. For better or for worse, I'm almost positive that the side of vegetables that came with my boyfriend's steak were frozen veggies (you can just tell when they're kinda soggy) and that the dressing they use (with the exception of ranch because they specifically stated it was homemade) is not homemade but rather tastes like a kraft-like dressing (yuck!). However, on the positive side, you can expect unique and (what I assume) authentic dishes. In terms of decorations and interior design, it could definitely use major a face lift! It's just so old looking in there. Sometimes a place has character and charm because it's old. However, I can't tell with this place and would say it's on the border of being outdated/gross and charming/cute. More detail: We started off with a regular side salad and the cucumber salad. As I mentioned, the salad dressing for the regular salad was not very good since it tasted like something that came out of a bottle. However, the cucumber salad was different. I believe in the menu it says it's cucumbers with sour cream. My boyfriend liked it, but I didn't particularly like it. The cucumbers were soggy and perhaps this is the way it was supposed to be, but the soggy texture just really grossed me out for some reason. I ordered the Hungarian goulash, which happened to be I think the only entree that automatically came with a desert. The way it was presented is really cute. It came in like a little caldron with a flame underneath. It was basically a beef stew with dumplings and vegetables in a thin tomato sauce/broth. It tasted good and the meat was nice and tender and almost falls apart in your mouth. Although it was good, it wasn't great to me because it tasted a little bland. My boyfriend ordered steak. The steak came with a side of veggies, which I already mentioned tasted like they were frozen vegetables with the exception of the potatoes. The potatoes were actually my favorite part of the non-desert part of my meal! As I mentioned, my goulash came with dessert: two palacsintas (crepes). At least when I went, you could pick either cheese or apricot or one of each. They were nice and warm! The waitress brought out the dessert tray, so we could see each dessert. We settled on the creama (sp?) "cake." It was SOO good! It's basically a top and bottom layer of phyllo dough and in between is a couple inches of cream/custard. Everything else on the dessert plate looked though. I don't think I would come back for a full dinner meal, but I would come back to get the dessert to go. Finally, as someone else mentioned, the doll / ceramic shrine right when you walk in is borderline creepy! I'm not sure if there's a backstory behind it, but if anyone knows, let me know! read more

Like its namesake piano music, Hungarian Rhapsody is familiar, somewhat dated but overall a pleasant experience. I went with my SO (yes Marcy, your mother) for the restaurant's Roast Duck dinner. The decor attempts to be old world and I am sure many if the tables and chairs have been around for several decades. We were promptly seated and our drink order was taken and filled. The service was so efficient that we were rushed through dinner. After a few sips of wine, the salad came and then the main course. Not much time to sit and chat. I don't think it was to move us out, just quick service. If you want a leisurely dinner, I think you need to ask. The food was very good. My stroganoff was very rich and the dumplings well prepared. Her duck was very tender and well seasoned. The portions were ample. Our dessert, which we split, was a take on a napoleon and the pastry cream was outstanding. Very good food at a reasonable price. If you are in the mood for an old wold experience or want to try Hungarian food done well, this is a very good choice. read more

My husband and I visited this restaurant for the first time with our Groupon. When we first walked in we felt like we were entering the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth. The decor reminded us of it. It also seemed outdated, but that maybe part of their theme. There was this strange display with dolls and houses. It was kinda creepy in our opinion. We were seated immediately. I liked how they had fresh bread and rolls on the table so that you could dig right in. There was butter too. Our waitress was immediately at our table for drinks. I got the unsweetened iced tea. I really liked it because it was strong. I had three refills. The waitress wasn't as helpful as I'd hope she'd be when it came to ordering. I told her we were new and needed some advice on chicken entrees. She was very vague. I ended up with Chicken Paprikas. My husband had their combo plate. My food was just warm. It should have been warmer. My husbands pork chop was hot but the rest of his food wasn't very warm either. We both felt the food was just alright, nothing special and it was pricey. Lastly we ordered two desserts. I got a pineapple cake and my husband got cheesecake. He liked his cheesecake and my cake was just alright. We drove about 30 minutes to Hungarian Rhapsody. The waitress we had was clearly busy but managed her time well and was hustling; the service was good. The place is full of kitsch, including doiley on the tables. The Hungarian Rhapsody is a downriver institution, and for good reason. It's the last true Hungarian restaurant in a community that was once full of Hungarian families and their businesses. While that culture may have vanished from Delray in Detroit long ago, and is in the process of vanishing in Southgate/Allen Park/Taylor, the Rhapsody is serving up Magyar classics the same way they have since 1993, and it's pretty much the only place left to get it other than at the Hungarian-American Cultural Center's yearly pig roast in Taylor, occasional chicken paprikás dinners at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Allen Park, and Ellie's Grill in Berkley. First of all, let me just say that I'm pretty passionate about Hungarian food (most underrated cuisine in the world, if you ask me), and I've been lucky enough to try quite a bit of it in the motherland. The Rhapsody is just about on the level, and my girlfriend's family is Hungarian and also swear by this place, so that ought to tell you something. The chicken paprikás at this place is just sublime. I wish I could eat their nokedli dumplings (very similar to German spätzle) and paprika sauce every day. The gulyás (goulash), served over an open flame, is also stupendous, and the pork chops are tender and cooked to perfection. I've also been lucky enough to try a handful of off-menu items when the Rhapsody has catered the annual grape harvest festival at the Hungarian Reformed Church, and those have all been excellent as well. With all that said, the Rhapsody has a couple of downsides. I found their töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage) pretty sad - the cabbage was rather bland and slimy, and the beef stuffing was dry, but that could've just been an off day. The vegetables on the side are also nothing to write home about, and just taste like they've been boiled in salted water. The main thing that hurts the Rhapsody is the general atmosphere. The decor is charming and quaint, but the overall vibe is, well... old. This place could really use a makeover - otherwise, I fear that it's not going to be able to attract many younger patrons, as it feels a bit like a retirement home dining room. Obviously not every restaurant needs to be trendy and chic, but the Rhapsody feels a little more dated every time I visit. Still, it's the only authentic Hungarian place around (with the possible exception of The Blue Danube in Windsor, which I have yet to try), and what they do well, they do very, very well! read more

Chicken paprikash is out of this world good. Buttery, creamy textures. My only complaint is the chicken has a lot of bones and it would be so much easier to eat if it had less or none! Stuffed cabbage is amazing and love the bite from the sauerkraut. The mashed potatoes and veggies are just okay. But the goulash. THE GOULASH. The goulash is served in a kettle over a flame. It's like a beef stew with dumplings in a tomato based broth. It's phenomenal. I have been going here for years and never had the goulash until recently. and it. is. the thing to get! They have this dessert called a "cremish" I think? It's basically a chunk of this cream that's a mix between custard and whip cream, with a small pastry top. it's pretty legit. read more

We have been to this restaurant many times and have never been disappointed. On July 24 we had a wedding shower there. Everything was 5 star. The banquet room was all ready for us at the appointed time. The bar tenders and waitresses were top notch. They really hustled all afternoon. They could not have been more attentive to our needs. We had an extra child show up and they didn't flinch when I asked them for an extra child's meal. The buffet was wonderful. We had chicken paprikash, wonderful. Sauerkraut and kielbasa, which was loaded with meat. Fried pork chops which were not over cooked, tender And moist. It was all just so good. I've eaten here a few times and the food is good. I'm not Hungarian but I imagine the menu is typical of what a family meal in Hungary would be like. The dumplings are the best! I could eat a pound of those. All of the food has flavor and, personally, I think you get a decent amount of food for the price. The food is 5 stars everyday! Now the reason for the 3 total stars... My family had an event with about 35 people in the banquet room on a Friday night. Personally I thought the servers we had during our event were quite rude. One lady tried too hard to joke around but some of things she said were just mean and really not that funny. Example - "Could we use the back door to bring items in?" "No absolutely not!" *awkward silence* "of course you can." ....again later "Could I get a refill of Coke?" "No." *again awkward silence* "of course you can." The banquet rooms have access to the bathrooms. We asked if we could use those bathrooms. We were told "yes but only until the wedding reception starts setting up." Well, the wedding reception setup didn't start until 9, but around 8pm, the separating door was closed just enough for the servers to enter and exit. We rented that space from 6-9pm and should have full access to the not only the room BUT also the accompanying bathrooms. The thing that angered me the most came at the end with the leftovers. We asked what happened with the leftovers? We were told they are donated to a shelter. Well wait a minute, can I at least get the chance to take some of them since 1. I paid for them 2. I make donations to shelters myself and I will determine how my money and food is spent. We didn't even want all of the leftovers just some for lunch the next day. Overall, I was disappointed with the banquet facilities, the servers, and the handling of the leftovers. Won't stop me from going to eat here but will discourage me from having another banquet here. read more

I've been feeling under-the-weather just about all week. I placed a to-go order, which the gentleman so kindly took over the phone even before they officially opened and told me it would only be 5 minutes! I assumed they opened at 10 that morning....my bad! 2 pints of soup: One chicken noodle and one cheesy tomato and a lunch portion of chicken paprikash! Thankfully, they also are saran wrap-OCD-users and nothing spilled in the bag! SKIP the chicken noodle soup. I didn't have one piece of chicken in mine. I was looking forward to the homemade egg noodles with celery, carrots, shredded chicken....not the lipton stringy noodles with maybe 4 carrots. That's a HUGE disappointment, especially when I wasn't feeling good. The chicken paprikash was still on point. Great consistency, and they gave me more than enough in the lunch portion. I even had enough for the next day's lunch! Overall: okay, but I would stick with what I KNOW is good from here : ) read more
