Meh, the dining room was pretty busy for a Sunday evening, but it seemed like it took way longer than it should have to get our food. We sat a long time waiting for soups and salads, and one of our party's soups was wrong. I ordered the Chicken Scaloppini Marsala (pointed to the menu) but when It came to the table it was Veal Marsala. I sent it back and when I got the chicken it was lukewarm and kinda greasy. They charged me for the veal and lectured me 2x on how to order to get the right item - maybe they could just confirm veal or chicken? Not going to rush back for sure. read more

While the food is as great as many of us have heard and the portions are huge, it was the service that took it down to 3 stars. Yes, I was there with a larger group, but it was a Wednesday early in the evening and the group had reservations for weeks so they should have planned for us. I don't know if it was the kitchen or the wait staff being spread too thin, but my table had to wait for an hour for our food with the table next to ours got food in 30 minutes and another table didn't get their food until a while after. I along with others had to just taste our food and then put it in to a take home container. My choice linguine and marinara sauce and mushrooms was delicious there and warmed up at home. I ordered extra sauce and boy did it have it. The room they used was nice but dated. While the food is good, I will not use them for one of my Meetup group dinners because of the service. read more

Wonderful food best chicken Parm in lasagna around everything is homemade. Same owner for years it's a mom and pop restaurant I recommend stoping in the atmosphere feels like you're in an Italian place somewhere in Italy. It was my Birthday and husband and I met our good friends at Mama Mia's for the occasion. The four of us were seated in a large wrap around booth, lots of room. Our waitress Adrianna approached us and introduced herself and got our beverages and we ordered cheesy bread and it came with a side of marinara sauce and a side of garlic spread, darn good!! She told us she would let us visit and then come back. Inside is cozy, older place but clean and organized. Another young woman came by, Deanna and told us she would be taking care of our dinners with Adrianna, maybe one of the cooks? Their Banquet room was being used but you couldn't hear any noise, just workers getting drinks. Our dinners arrived, I ordered the Chef Special, it was served in a baking dish right out the oven. Chicken, cheese tortellini, green peppers, mushrooms and onions, in a Parmesan cheese sauce, Huge portion and it was delicious!!! Hub got veal parmigiana with spaghetti and green beans, excellent and plenty to take home. Salads were fresh and tasty, also got hot garlic rolls. Our friends enjoyed their meals very much. Adrianna and Deanna did a great job taking care of us. We had Tiramisu, candles lit and Happy Birthday sang to me, how special! Prices were so reasonable and they gave you so much food, amazing! We've been here before and didn't really have any complaints. However this trip it (a Monday) was very different. We ordered the eggplant parmigiana and the rosemary burger with parmigiana fries. Bread comes with and it was good as always. But the eggplant parmigiana was heavy and the fries were not hot and the burger was cold and overcooked. It felt like leftovers. The service was ok, not up to the last time we were there. It wasn't crowded so we expected the usual service level. Again clean interior and I always love the very large puffer fish skeleton in the front. Disappointed. read more

The food was excellent. I had chicken parmigiana. Two large chicken patties cooked perfectly. Angel hair pasta and sauce was delicious. My husband had Dante's inferno. The spice was perfect and the portions were enormous. Our friends had lasagna and shrimp with garlic and oil. They said theirs was delicious as well. Freshly baked breadsticks were yummy as well. One of the best restaurant to go to. I've been going here since I was a kid, after Covid they had a really bad rough patch but since the past 4 times I've been there it's been phenomenal, the service has been over the top, the blond waitress is amazing, didn't catch her name but great service. The food was amazing and the leftovers I took home cooked up and tasted amazing, if you are thinking about going out to a nice restaurant I would strongly recommend going here. read more

We love to travel over an hour from our house to come back and eat at one of our favorite Italian Restaurants. Everything on the menu is amazing. The pizza's are also an attraction, where people come just for that. I love the Tour of Italy. Large portions! They make the cannoli fresh to order too. The food does taste good. I ordered the chicken piccata, via GrubHub, and the description was a side of spaghetti and a side of either soup or salad. I assumed the side of spaghetti would be flavored with the piccata sauce... But no, it is flavored with marinara. Why would you want a tomato flavored pasta paired with a lemon caper chicken? Makes no sense to me. And I chose soup as the side, but I got a salad with an Italian dressing. The salad tasted very good, but it is not what I ordered. OMG! So delicious!! Mama Mia has been here for longer than I've been around. I remember this place when it was a casual eatery with the vintage style booths. The food has held up in taste and quality all these years. I had the Eggplant Parmigiana with Angel Hair Pasta which I know is a pretty common dish. The marinara was very tasty which complimented the eggplant perfectly. My daughter had spaghetti. I was going to order a half order but the waitress recommended a side of spaghetti instead. It was a good portion size for my 12 yr old. The waitress was very attentive and prompt. We couldn't escape without trying their Strawberry Cheesecake. It was so creamy and smooth. The strawberry taste was perfect. I would order it again. This was not your typical strawberry cheesecake. The flavor was baked into a portion of the cheesecake itself. read more

After discussion with the restaurant directly today I would like to take time to amend my previous review of the establishment to be more precise Yes, the meal was sub par, specifically very heavily salted and acidic. That said, the portions are extremely generous. Quantity over substance. Having visiting many regions in Italy and being of direct Italian descent, I would encourage a refresh of the items. Soggy calamari with oil dripping peppers and onions is nowhere near current with today's form of soul food. I appreciate the conversation had with ownership and respect them for reaching out. Maybe I was too blunt and insensitive. Being without many ingredients following power outages weeks back probably didn't help their case. And..Maybe this just happened to be a rare occasion, or maybe the reviews of greatness are biased to what benchmarks are for fresh quality products. Hopefully this is a nicer version and absolutely please decide for yourselves, as I may very well be a spoiled food snob. Cheers read more

I grew up in Redford and now live in Arizona. I have not been here in 50 years. My hats off to the family who still run this restaurant. I came back to Detroit for a visit and decided I wanted to be nostalgic and pay Mama Mia's a visit. I had no expectations. We ordered a pizza and pasta dish. Both were cooked perfectly and were absolutely delicious. Our servers name was Taylor and she helped make for a great experience. She was funny, witty and very attentive. Any restaurant that has survived for over 65 years with the same family must be doing something right. The food was great, value oriented and worth a dine in. Gabriela was the most Fantastic waitress, very friendly, wonderful service, & great food recommendations! The manager Michelle was very nice, and runs a great restaurant! The bread was delicious I had the chef special: Grilled marinated chicken breast, bell peppers, applewood bacon , button mushrooms , Vidalia onions, simmered in garlic Parmesan cream sauce. Tossed with four cheese tortellini past!! Along with their delicious garden salad, by far the best salad I've ever eaten! It's sad to see how a once very good restaurant has fallen off. First clue was a virtually empty parking lot around 7:00 on a Friday evening. The ambiance was non existent. It was loud with carry out calls being blared with non-answered phones. The appetizers were underwhelming with the salad appearing to be made days in advance. It was so sad, I slipped it an antidepressant and gave it a pep talk... the entrees were average at best but large in portions. The lone bright spot was our server. She did a great job. I guess it might be unfair to expect things to be the same over the 40 years of dining there, but this is likely the last I'll ever visit. read more

Looking for large portions of flavorful Italian? Look no further. Atmosphere- 2/5: the interior and exterior could use a full remodel. Takeout might be your best option here. Food- 4/5: The breadsticks have LOTS of butter and garlic. They were tasty. The side salads were simple but the house dressing was good. Both pasta entrees were large enough for 2 people. We took a lot home. They didn't skimp on cheese or meat, which I appreciate. The Dantes was very spicy, which the menu was clear about. It was really good, but I think I would recommend something else on the menu if it's your first time trying Mama Mia's. Service- 3/5: our waitress was busy with a large group in the banquet room and she said they only had 1 person in the kitchen. The service was still pretty good, all things considered. Value- 4/5: Huge portions at reasonable prices. I would give them a 5/5 here except for 2 things that left a bad first impression. 1. The menu said that side salads were included with entrees. However, we were charged $2 for each side salad. We didn't order upgraded salads (Caesar, wedge) or anything like that. Not a big deal if this is their pricing, but just seemed misleading. 2. The menu clearly showed $20 for Dantes, yet the receipt shows that we were charged $22. Likely they've raised prices and need to update their in-resturant menus. I have been going to Mama Mia since I was a kid, and that is a long time ago. This has been a staple for my family; birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, even funerals. Large group.. we were set up ahead of time to be served in the banquet room, not the restaurant, so it was not a surprise. The server took our order and we got a starter (soup) delivered as well as bread sticks, both very tasty. Then the other tables were served but not in a timely manner. We had about 6 or 7 tables and the get together was to be from 4:30 to 6:00PM. After the soup there was NO food delivered to our table and by the time we were to call it a night we still had not been served. Some people just left and some of us had our food (finally... at 6:45PM!) put in takeout containers just moments before cancelling our dinners. On the plus side the servings are huge and the food looked and smelled delicious. As to the taste, I don't know as I just returned home (8:08PM) and put it in the refrigerator to eat tomorrow. If it had not been the conversation with the group at our table I'd have left earlier as a few of us were ready to do. We should have been offered at least a discount which was not even brought up.. If I were the manager/owner I'd have comp'd the entire (for a few of us non existent) meal. I left a good tip for the server as this was not her fault. We were WAY too patient!! Drive by often, but never stopped. Family has been doing carry out regularly and decided to give Mama Mia a try when I saw them on delivery site. I am glad I did. Vegetable lasagna is full of veggies (broccoli , spinach, carrots to name a few) with a creamy white sauce. The mozzarella is pull and twirl around your fork thick and delicious. An entree comes with soup or salad and breadsticks. They have a kids menu also with for the little people and French fries for sides. Crunchy and crisp when I snuck some from our family meal. Service has been consistent over the 3-4 visits I've had. They practice social distancing, you must wear a mask to enter and they have hand sanitizer. Dine in is still available.
