Let me preface this by saying I'm not much of a coffee person in the slightest so much of the desired coffee shop ambiance is lost on me. But to concur with most reviewers, this place always seems full with limited to no seating available. It seems clean enough for people to hang out for a while if there's space. It was so cold outside that I had to stop in and try a chai latte. Wasn't in love with it... especially as long as good cheap coffee drinks are a quick stop away. Okay. I came back again this week on a Tuesday morning of espresso touring with my buddy and we both agree: best shot (of espresso) we can find in NYC. We went down Oliver Strand's list and hit all my favorites and here's how it panned out: 1) Hungry Ghost 2) tie Toby's Estate and Forty Weight Coffee (at Sweetwolf's) 3) Abraco 4) 9th Street Espresso 5) Gimme Coffee (on Lorimer) They serve Stumptown's Hairbender espresso (which although isn't my personal favorite blend) they're doing something very special here with it. My buddy had what he described as the best cortado he's ever had...he's visiting from Seattle and had always refused to agree that we had any good cafes here. Fortunately, my favorite barista Patrick was working too and put that debate to rest...apparently this guy's now roasting his own beans at home. My question is when are they going to start serving those? No pressure. In any case, congrats from us guys. You won, for whatever that's worth...hahaha. Wow, this is a popular place! This place is always swarming, no matter what day or time you go here. When I think of a cafe, I think of a place with comfortable seating so you could relax and have your coffee. However, Hungry Ghost lacks ample seating and if you do find a seat, you'll have to squeeze yourself in. It's great that the space seems airy and spacious but the lack of seating can be frustrating at times. Although they have the no laptop rules for the long communal tables and tables in the front, it still gets really crowded here, so if you see a seat make sure to save it right away, otherwise you'll have to wait. On the bright side, it's a plus that Hungry Ghost serves Stumptown coffee. I've had their cappuccino and chai latte - and both were made really well. The twisted chocolate croissant was so delicious that I literally almost finished it within seconds. I'll be back again but this time I'll try to go at a less crowded time. read more

Mango Chili cupcake equals sweet spicy yum yum. I've yet to try the hot sandwiches, but the sweets are very nice. Plus, I guess they call it Hungry Ghost because the decor is like a drab gray/blue? Anyways, I think it's funny that there's a sign that people with laptops cannot sit at the social tables. They have the designated bar area. Personally, I think it's a great idea. This coffee shop opened 1 block away from where I live. I really like the ambience. The coffee and pastry are also very delicious. I don't know much about coffee though. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are a no laptop policy on most tables. I find that a little inconvenient, but it's still a great place to sit down, enjoy a cup of coffee and do some reading. I just wish they have more seating though. read more

A solid venue with good coffee; I picked up a nitro cold brew on tap and a cookie, both of which were wonderful. They brew stumptown which is always approachable and great coffee. Not a terrible amount of seating but there's a lot of open space and the layout is fairly spread out, so it probably doesn't get terribly congested. Wasn't particularly unique, and I can't vouch for the food, but the coffee was great. read more

Hard to decide where to start, but I'll give it to the service - always always always happy and smiley and pleasant. Then getting to the main product, coffee, very very solid. The biggest latte they have is 12 oz, which is a bit of a bummer, but only b/c it's so delicious. The baked goods are totally out of control. Do not come here hungry if you're trying to watch your waist. Seating is a little tough - somehow with all that square footage it seems there should be more places to sit, but it's also just a victim of its own success. I love this cafe! I work nearby, and I'm always in here. The espresso drinks (made with Stumptown Hair Bender, oh yes), hot and iced, are magical. The chocolate chip cookies are super gooey. The chai is gloriously homemade and not from a syrupy mix. I also love the design of the place - like an industrial log cabin (in the best way). There are two very excellent chairs in one of the windows to stake out and pounce on once empty. The music is usually swell, though sometimes it does veer off into club territory. I don't think there are any outlets to plug into, so bring a book! read more

I really enjoy the Hungry Ghost. It is great as a local coffee house, and I'm glad that I live nearby. It has really yummy baked goods, and excellent coffee and tea. I appreciate that the chai tea and chai latte are from actual loose tea bags and not just a boxed mix. My favorite baked goods are the cookies, and the morning glory bar (which I haven't seen recently but was amazing and I hope returns) I also like that it is a pleasant atmosphere to sit and read or talk to a friend. The different seating areas for computers vs not don't seem to be much of a problem for me since I use an Ipad, but seems silly sometimes when the shop is otherwise empty to have no computer zones. read more

This is a pretty cool space to grab coffee with friends. I came here to catch up with some college friends a few weeks ago. We were on a long bench with other parties so there wasn't much privacy but we made it work. You are not allowed to use your computer at certain tables so this might not be a good place to come study or work. Love the coffee and as I am a bit of a coffee fiend I'd say I speak from experience. The drip is always hot when I go and the vast array of pastries will not disappoint. I went in on a Sunday recently and decided to stay in for breakfast. Ended up having the Belgian waffle with strawberries and powdered sugar. Awesome sauce.d no complaints. I work across the street, so I've started to make this coffee shop a regular haunt before my shift. The space is gorgeous and open, which is a really nice change from the standard New York cramp. I haven't tried their coffee drinks yet, but I've had the chai latte, iced and hot. It's their own blend made with actual tea, so it's a very distinct change if you're used to syrup-based chai lattes. Because of this, it's not cloyingly sweet, which I enjoy. Their ginger molasses cookie was delicious and surprisingly soft. They offer lots of vegan pastries, if that's a selling point for you. There are lots of mixed feelings about the laptop-free spaces. I personally don't mind it, mostly because I'm much more likely to use coffee shops as spaces to socialize rather than work, but I can understand some of the frustration, as the surfaces where you can use laptops are on the small side. read more

Stopped in for a mid-afternoon iced chai on this lovely day. Guy took my order and started making the drink, but the girl staffing the register was chatting with another staffer and only looked up to say "YEAH?" to me as I stood there waiting to pay. She proceeds to say "you have to wait 5 minutes" and then gives my order to the guy already making the drink. So, nothing so nice about the service. How was the beverage? I was worried when I saw the hot tea cup, and justifiably so: the drink was terrible. Watery, bland, barely cold, and a pile of gross tea schmeg at the bottom. Angry to have given this place $3.75. I did have a nice chicken salad sandwich here in the spring - tasty, a bit of a ripoff, but same cold attitude. Going to pass on this place in the future for the more pleasant folks and higher-quality goods at Larder across the street. read more

I met a friend here for a quick catch up over coffee and dessert. We sat at the lovely couches in the window of the cafe. Lot's of natural light! It's a great place to meet someone for a one on one as it doesn't get too loud and there is ample seating. I imagine it would be a good place to get some light work done as well. The cashier was a total sweetheart and when I was skeptical about trying the cookie (I wanted to "spend" my calories on the donut instead), he gave it to me free of charge. Hungry Ghost is so far the BEST coffee shop I've been to in NY. That's quite a claim. The atmosphere is great, the coffee can't be beaten - and the Iced Mocha's are just heavenly! To top it all off the baristas are so friendly and are great at what they do. I think most of the review cover details about HG. I really want to like this place! But every time I come here, they're out of the very few things (being vegan) I can actually eat. Please stop being out of all the vegan things that I came here for. Also, I came in to work on a few things inbetween work and more work, and apparently I sat in the "no laptop area" so my laptop was not welcome. Even though the "laptop area" was full of other people with the same idea as me. The staff was nice about it, but please use common sense staff! My tiny Google Crome book isn't hurting anyone!
