I came up here from Ohio to see a couple of stock car races. Thought I might as well eat something. I stumbled upon the Hungry Peddler. Glad I did. I started off with Pepper Jack cheese curds. The pepper Jack was very mild, and the batter was thin. I guess I would describe them as delicate. They were delicious. The clam chowder was very thick and hearty. Don't know if it was made in house or pre packaged, but it was also very good. I also had the patty melt. The only way to describe it is ooey, gooey, cheesy. In my 21 years of living I have never felt obligated to leave a review of a place until now. It's been a long Monday and I felt like going out to eat. Partner and I decided on some place we've never been - The Hungry Peddler. Outside it's a restaurant quite easy to pass; it's no surprise it flew under my radar for so long. The inside was very charming. Then we meet our waitress, Paula, who ended up being the most amazing waitress I've ever had. She seemed so at ease with her job. She was very knowledgeable of the menu and INCREDIBLY friendly. She instantly makes you feel comfortable and has the widest smile. Even looking around she was super sociable and aware of everyone she was serving. If I were to ever open a restaurant I would want her serving every single table. Food-wise the French onion soup ended up being fantastic, and the toasted bread that came with my lasagna was perfect. I don't know how much Paula is paid but please give this very kind lady a raise, she clearly deserves it. To top it off, she even wrote on our to-go boxes! Hungry? This is one of La Crosse's best restaurants. The decor is old time beginning in the late 1800's and spanning to the present. The beautiful ceilings are something a diner can stare at throughout the meal. Besides everything to look at, this restaurant has some of the best service in the industry. ...and have I mentioned the food? Nothing is a poor choice. Enjoy Friday Fish Night? Yep. This is the place. And the price is always right. My favorite? A morning special of biscuits and gravy served the old way with eggs on top! You may have to wait a moment or two for a table during COVID but that's only because their regular customers keep coming back. Picked this place to eat here in La Crosse because the boyfriend wanted a steak for supper. This was a Wed. late afternoon, and I am sure glad we stopped here. He had a T-bone, and I had the hamburger steak. Both of our entrees were delicious. Our server, who I can't remember his name was so friendly and very professional. He even gave us directions to a liquor store so we could pick up some warm Spotted Cow beer to take back to SD. Kudos to this not-your-average steak house. My first encounter here was as a door-to-door salesman, and the name just seemed to fit... My manager had us meet here at the end of the day, and let's just say that I've been back enough times to learn their menu. You can't beat their biscuits and gravy, and if you want a good omelet you won't find a better place in town. It gets crowded quickly, so I hope you're not afraid of crowds. We stopped here for lunch a few days ago. As soon as you walk in you get that old fashioned supper club vibe. Dark wood, dimly lit and a huge menu. In another nod to Supper Club tradition, our lunch included a plate of pickle spears, radishes and baby carrots. Our waitress also dropped off a basket of bread and crackers. Our favorite was the thick slices of Crunchy Crouton-like Garlic Bread. We devoured every piece. In addition to all this, our sandwiches also came with soup. My French Onion was outstanding. It had a Rich, Beefy Broth, tons of Sweet, Caramelized Onions and a thick blanket of melted Cheese. Diane had the Creamy Chicken (I think that was the name). She must have loved it because she ate it so fast I never got to try it! I had the Fish Sandwich, Which was two HUGE pieces of Battered Cod on French Bread with Tartar Sauce on the side. It was awkward to eat as a sandwich, so I ate it like a Fish Fry and it was a good as any Fish Fry I've ever had. Diane had The Veggie Burger, which was not Vegetarian, but a perfectly cooked Angus Beef Patty with Onions, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Olives and Cheddar Cheese. Diane skipped the Green Peppers. In both our cases, our fries were good but nothing special. The Hungry Peddler is Wheelchair Accessible and service is friendly and knowledgeable. This is a great, old, little place. The old decor and carpet make it pretty rustic. There is a full bar with a dining room. Based on Yelp reviews and the boasting of the wait staff that claimed they have the best French onion soup, I tried it. THE FRENCH ONION SOUP IS AMAZING! It's very cheesy. I was glad I ordered the half order of lasagna. The portion sizes are pretty big. My sister got a hamburger and it was pretty massive. A friend got the Reuben, but that was disappointing. They put three slices of bread to make it look like a big sandwich, but it's a lot of sauerkraut and bread. Very minimal corned beef. They have a beer they're known for, the Peddler Frau. That's a pretty good German beer. I'd recommend it. The service, if you are not from Wisconsin, may be a little off-puting if you don't understand their sass. I think it's great. Lastly, and a big reason I can't give 5-stars is because of the bathroom location. I would hate to be seated next to one of them, but walking in between 2 tables to get there and conduct your business feet away from other customers. read more

This is a time-worn place, but I found that comforting. I got there an hour before they closed, but they greeted me as if I had all the time in the world. Paula was my waitperson - could NOT have been more kind! I inquired about red wines, she said they "have plenty to choose from" and I ordered Pinot noir. Sadly, a plastic bottle of Sutter's Home was set in front of me...apparently all of the choices are Sutter Home. In plastic. I don't see how they make the money restaurants usually do with single serve plastic, but that is not my business. They might want to up their game in the 'ol wine department, but I set my disappointment aside and drank the damn wine. The fillet was nicely cooked to the proper temp and the salad was as expected, but just fine. I had the vegetable blend that was straight out of a bag, but doctored up with butter and seasoning. I would personally have given them 0 stars if I could have. Are bill was $45.62. Be wary of the menu prices as they are not charging you for the prices shown on menu. We ordered two lighter side spaghetti dinners which according to the menu were $9.00. We were charged $14.00 for each meal. In addition, they had an "issue" while trying to charge my debit card. They were receiving an error code "91" and proceeded to run my card 5 times. I did tell them that I had just used my card and it was working fine. I was later told by the manager that I had asked them to run the card five times. This was not the case and I was not told about the error until after they had made multiple transactions on my card. I was visibly upset because $228.00 was pending/hold on my bank account. I was informed by the manager that the money would be back on my card in 10 days because at the end of the night the transactions would "drop off". She could not tell me how their banking institution would know not to deduct these transactions. So I am out over $200 until this drops off of my account or until I file a dispute if the transactions post, making the process take even longer. I had to walk to the Mirage bar next door to take out cash to pay for the meal, so in essence i paid $273 for supper. In addition, we missed a movie we already paid for. This is the absolute worst customer service I have had in a very long time. According to manager, there was nothing she could do, she really didn't even try to do anything. At the end she grudgingly gave me a gift certificate for the amount of the movie tickets. I politely told her to keep it as we probably wouldn't be back. I was then told by the manger to keep it as a "souvenir". We used to come here quite often but stopped for almost a year because the quality of the food was so bad. Now I definitely will never come back. I did ask to speak to the owner and was told he lived in Arizona and that they did not have his phone number. Pros: - Nice ambience - Great service - Entrees come with soup, salad, and a side. A very generous portion of food. Cons: - Very bland food. We had their mushroom burger and Peddler style scallops (baked in butter, garlic powder, croutons, mushrooms). I was shocked at how bland the scallops were. The scallops themselves were lacking the natural sweet flavor that high quality scallops have. I was even more shocked when I found out they didn't use real garlic! When I told my waitress they were less flavorful than I would've expected, she only offered to bring me garlic powder or lemon. I should've asked for her to replace it with something else. - French onion soup comes with mozzarella melted, not browned on top. French onion soup is supposed to come with Gruyere cheese. We really wanted to adore this restaurant and we've eaten here twice for breakfast. On the first visit, I had the Biscuits & Gravy and they were way too sweet for my taste. I like a pepper or sausage taste, but sugar just doesn't work for me. Not my thing, but others may enjoy them prepared in this fashion. I had a side of regular hash browns, which I really enjoyed. On my second visit, I had their Prime Rib Hash, which is supposed to be their signature dish. I was very disappointed and felt that the dish was simply greasy hash browns; I preferred the side that I had on my first visit. If I go back, I'd try their continental breakfast or go with one of the Benedicts. My wife had one on her second visit and really enjoyed hers (she didn't share). A friend had the vegetarian version and it looked amazing (he didn't share either). Overall, the breakfast gets three stars from us. The furnishings and the staff here are amazing though. The inside screams Americana and its clearly obvious why some of the cast of American Pickers are regulars. If you can ignore the large crowds that frequent this establishment, you'll thoroughly enjoy the decor (on both visits we waited 15 minutes for a table). On top of a great setting, the Peddler has an extremely friendly and professional wait staff. Overall, fair prices, good food, amazing decor and staff. Don't waste your time and especially your money. The food is very blah. I was expecting more of a home cooked feel with pot roast and pot pies with the name hungry peddler. We were seated in front of the mens room which started the meal off on a bad note. They serve free home made croutons as an appetizer which my teething daughter enjoyed. I had the fish sandwich because it was the special. Sorry this is not even close to the best fried fish. It said it was served on french bread which it was not. The fries were frozen and the worst I have had in a while. My husband had a hamburger and chili(strange combo but we are always searching for great chili). The hamburger was over cooked and tasteless my husband said he'd rather had Wendy's chili which he normally hates! My son's chicken fingers were OK and he actually ate them all. If you want a bloody they bring you a glass of plain tomato juice/vodka and then all the fixings to build up your own drink, just the way you like. This place does not claim to be anything but a hole-in-the-wall homestyle midwestern meat and potatoes joint where the waitresses wear t-shirts and jeans and a couple of the dishes are advertised as marinated in "light Italian dressing." Food snobs beware, if you overlook the Hungry Peddler, you will passover some Americana and some decent food and people watching. Plus, the place has some historic charm--with antiques littering the dining room (with no smugness). The french onion soup is scrumptious and reminds me of the same soup I ate at dimly lit supper clubs when I was a kid. A dining partner had similar praise regarding the clam chowder. Blackened catfish was better than expected at a fair price. A friend enjoyed the boneless pork chop, which he noted to be thick, tender and lean. Everything was Wisconsin-sized portions, which I've pretty much come to expect in La Crosse! The service was friendly and a little sassy, which was perfect. Yes, the tables are snug and adjacent to the glaring light of the kitchen, but have some forgiveness--this place is a little gem. Was recommend for lunch mid afternoon on Saturday. Only 2 other tables when we came and they left soon after. The French Onion soup was good, not stellar, but above average. My wife had Vegetable Teriyaki with Shrimp and said it was very good. I ordered the Philly Beef & Cheese and added mushrooms. I was very disappointed with the sandwich. The mushrooms had an earthy flavor which overpowered the sandwich. As for the meat, the menu says "Tender sliced beef" which turned out to be deli meat, the kind that had that slightly slimy feel and taste. The portions were generous and we both took home over 1/2 of our order. The did start out with a bread basket which had delicious toasted garlic bread. We ordered a coke and diet coke. This place has everything you want in a non chain restaurant: ambience, wonderful staff, the best Friday night fish(and chicken) deal around. Excellent soups, steaks and if you order the spaghetti or lasagna they give you very big portions. I go about twice a month and look forward to it every time. One of the last places I know that still puts buns, garlic toast and a small vegetable plate on the table before you even order. Go early because tables go fast. I always feel as if I'm being welcomed home upon arrival, like they're actually excited and happy to see me. Furthermore there's always a bread or relish tray waiting for me to nibble on. Ambience, while being confined to the smaller quarters of a historical site. One can gaze at the past history of the Coulee Region as they peruse the walls of the establishment and it's 100 plus year history. While visiting family in Wisconsin, we saw the Hungry Peddler and decided to stop in for breakfast on a Sunday. There was about a 20 minute wait, so we left and came back instead of waiting there. When we got back, we were promptly seated in the dining room which was decorated in a really cozy old-timey theme, and greeted almost immediately by a very friendly waitress armed with the coffee urn. The soda pop comes in cans with a glass of ice, and the bloody mary I ordered comes with a glass of beer (a Wisconsin tradition--surprise!) and a condiment rack so you can spice it up yourself with worcestershire, cholula, tabasco, and celery salt. The pickle and lemon slice is standard. I ordered the Denver omelet and my husband ordered the cinnamon french toast with sausage patty and American fries. I gave the omelet five stars for flavor and portion size, even if it was a little greasy. The American fries were soooo good, with just the right balance of tenderness and crisp! My hubby said his meal was excellent as well. Our waitress was really on-point with service and just had a really friendly and disarming attitude that made us really comfortable off the bat. Overall, our breakfast for two (including bloody mary and tip) was just about $25. This place really seems like a local favorite, and I can see why! We overheard lots of conversations between waitresses and patrons that seemed to know each other and it gave a charming, small town feel to the place.
