A new "Compliance Fee" has been added for 2015 on top of the propaine charge. Call around. Don't sign up for auto fill which allows them to fill your tank when prices are at their highest. Monitor your tank's gauge every month during heating use. Other dealers will sell you less propane if you need less to hold you over. Try and buy in the late summer or early fall when prices are most likely at their lowest of the year. Hunt Country Propane now sells propane at the near the same price most of the greater N. Virginia propane distributors. And unlike the others who mandate a minimum of 150 gallon purchase, Hunt Country requires a 500 gallon delivery to maximize their profits. Hunt Country Propane is no longer guaranteed to be the cheapest so its best to call around and check prices. If you need a smaller delivery to hold you over until you can buy in summer or early fall when the prices are lower it is going to cost much more if you have to buy at their 500 gallon minimum especially in the winter season. Keep in mind that if you own your own tank you will get a lower price from all vendors. I would like to see this company roll back the required 500 gallon minimum to the standard 150 gallon amount and to offer the lowest price rather than the same price as the majority of the propane cabal. As with all dealers, if you are enrolled in an automatic refill program (they refill when they choose) you will almost always pay top dollar for each gallon. Also, there is no guarantee that you will not run out of propane. Monitor your own tank's gauge. To be fair, most of the other dealers will force the buyer to undergo a 'pressure check test' at a cost of around $80-$100 if you want to use them (regardless of amount bought) and require a credit check even if the customer pays up front with cash, check or debit card. Hunt Country does not. Many also charge a delivery fee and fuel surcharge often adding a $3-$10 of additional costs and Hunt Country does not. Some dealers will automatically enroll the customer in auto in part to ensure that fill ups are done during the winter season when prices are at a premium; however, some people are unwilling to periodically check the gauge on their tanks and are willing to pay premium to avoid taking a walk to their propane tank every few months when heating their homes. What I have liked about Hunt Country is 1.) Brandi has always delivered great customer service. She is always polite, friendly and seems very capable based on my three year experience. 2). A few years ago I began smelling faint propane outside and called Hunt Country to ask for advice. Mr Schultz came pulling into my drive before I even received a callback. I think it was a weekend morning. I had no idea who he was until he politely introduced himself, but he quickly surveyed the situation and it turns out that the exhaust from an old, inefficient furnace was to blame. He explained to me what he was looking for and talked to me about real warning signs. He could not have been nicer. I'm not sure if they have a seasonal reminder system,or if that alleviates a homeowners duty to check the tank once in awhile. Its like a car. No one knows when the tank will be empty except the person using it. But here are some basic facts that homeowners who rely on propane heat need to be aware of: Prices change seasonally, no matter who you buy your propane from. Its always cheaper to have your tank filled before the weather begins to turn cold and its never wise to wait until the middle of November to order propane or you will be in line behind everyone else who procrastinated. On a very regular basis I received friendly emails and flyers reminding me to check the gauge and order early. Hunt Country sends out a very nice newsletter with information about safety, and seasonal warnings to check your tank . You never want to be below 20%. I had my tank topped off when I had like 30-40%. I think that the minimum is 100 gallons and I am guessing that most people have a 1,000 gallon tank, My 5,000+ sf house used under 100 gallons a month during the winter, though we often used a wood burner on the main floor. My point is that if you check your tank every few months, you will not run out of propane. It takes a minute or so to lift the cover and read the gauge. Also, no company fills the tank more than about 85%. I am guessing that there has to be some room for the gas to expand. I rarely write reviews like this, but they really do deserve a big thumbs up. Think about what you read. I wouldn't blame the gas station if my car ran out of gas. People must accept some responsibility for homeowner maintenance here. Having been "unknowingly" stuck with another propane company because the underground tank did not belong to the "house", a neighbour highly recommended that I ring Hunt Country whom she'd dealt with for many years and who had a much better price on propane (and that the staff there were a delight to work with). I subsequently spoke with "Olympia" there who could not have been more patient, professional, courteous and responsive. She walked me through the steps to switch companies and quoted the price and made an appointment for the delivery. I've had several follow-up conversations with "Olympia" over the telephone and I continue to be impressed with her telephone manner, her willingness to go the extra mile and the pleasant and professional approach she has to whatever question I have. So very happy we switched to Hunt Country. My only regret is that we didn't do it sooner. How much money we would have saved...... However, we finally made the right choice about our propane. For years I have been receiving offers from other companies offering low rates, only to find out you have to enter a contract with them. It never made sense to me that you could drive around town and shop prices for fuel for your car, but not for your home. It's nice to see that a business owner understands this and caters to the customer. We received our first delivery this past Saturday and the owner himself brought it out. The service was excellent. I can't say enough positive things about Hunt Country Propane, particularly when it came to their customer service. We are new to the area and had an Amerigas tank which meant we had to purchase Amerigas fuel. After calling around post polar-vortex I found that I could purchase my tank and free myself from Amerigas and their ridiculously high prices! As is the case with many homeowners I purchased a home with an in ground tank and learned that the tank was owned by the propane company - Amerigas, in my case. Therefore i could only purchase from Amerigas and obligated to pay whatever they charged. As the years passed, I discovered that my friends were paying much less per gallon to other companies. Hunt's Propane is one of the most responsive and helpful companies I've dealt with. We recently had a gas pool heater installed. Hunts came out and inspected the work done, and the installation failed the code inspection. We contacted the pool company and they never corrected the installation. The Hunt's propane technician came out almost a month later and made the repairs at no charge to us. A few week's later we had a a major gas leak from that same pool heater, and they were out within 30 minutes and fixed the leak. They waived the fees and quickly re-filled our tank. I called them at least 10 times during that time frame and they were never frustrated and were incredibly helpful. They are personable, friendly, and extremely reliable! read more
