Hunter is a Hair God. I have been a loyal disciple for over 2 years now. If Hunter ever moves out of SF I would seriously debate following him (in a non-creepy, non-stalker way of course). Simply put, Hunter is amazing! I've been going to Hunter for a couple of years now and have seen his work on clients as well. He has a talent for finding flattering cuts for a variety of hair types and lengths. Not only that, but he genuinely cares about his clients' happiness. At the end of every appointment with Hunter, he reminds me to tell him if I'm not happy with something (as if that's ever happened!) so that he can fix it. There has also been many instances where he'll take the time to teach me a styling technique so I can try to recreate the look myself. Another thing I love about Hunter is that he's not pushy. You can tell that he has a passion for what he does when he offers suggestions on cut and color, but he will understand if you tell him it's not for you or doesn't fit your lifestyle. (And yes, I have had other stylists that made me feel pushed into a cut that I ended up hating.) And just a tip, make plans after every appointment with Hunter! He gives great cuts and even provides free bang trims in between haircuts (he even does this for me even though I don't have bangs, he just trims the front layers so they're not so long). Hunter is a hair genius! I've been going to Hunter for about 4 years now, and each haircut is simply wonderful. I'm growing out my hair, so for the last haircut, I asked that he cut as little as possible. Unlike past hair stylists who then chop off 2 inches, he only cut 1/4 inch (really) - and it amazingly looks longer now than it did before (such skilled layering!) I usually only get my hair cut every 6-12 months, and his haircuts grow out so well! They still look great - even after 6 months. I've also had Hunter cut 10 inches off of my hair (decided to go short!) - and it was also a great cut - that grew out really well. I cannot recommend Hunter enough! read more

Hunter is plum-wonderful. I can't believe it's taken me this long to review him, but here I am: five years later, and having followed him from Festoon to his lovely new location, Salon Basinger. Hunter is an absolute professional, and an artist: his attention to detail is impeccable; he has a critical eye (he's been honest with me when he doesn't think a particular style would compliment my face shape, etc.); he listens, and has carefully talked me through a number of big hair transitions; he has incredible style. Every time I walk out of my appointment, I feel like a million bucks. And I've never had so many people---so many perfect strangers---compliment me on my haircuts. Not just on BART, right after I've walked out of the salon, but even months later, when I'm, um, maybe very overdue for another haircut! It's always caught me completely off guard, because before Hunter my hair was very plain: parted down the middle, straight, very fine. But my absolute trust in Hunter as a stylist has completely changed that, has totally reversed old preconceptions of my "boring" hair and, cheesy as this may sound, helped how I see myself, how I define my own femininity and style. I just got back from my latest appointment with Hunter and I couldn't be happier. Hunter is just the best. He's been doing my hair and my daughter's hair for years. Hunter does the most gorgeous layers on my daughter's long, very thick, slightly wavy hair. My curly hair is more challenging, but Hunter cuts it to look great whether I let the curls go natural or I blow it out. I also have lots of grey to cover. He really listens, and has tweaked and updated my color so that it's exactly what I like - warm and natural. He does beautiful balayage and face-framing highlights. Finally, I always leave the salon with a great blowout. Hunter is a total pro and just the nicest guy. I have had to do allot of searching and suffering through allot of bad haircuts in my area to find a "good" hairstylist. I visit family in San Francisco a few times a year and is how I was introduced to Hunter. When I visit San Francisco I make getting my haircut by Hunter my first priority! I have coarse, unruly, wavy grey texture and thinning in areas due to medication. Hunter not only addressed my concerns but exceeded my expectations. He gave me a modern "wash and go" pixie cut that works with my grey texture and created more fullness where I was feeling thin. Hunter has the experience, training and talent to give me a short cut that grows out beautifully into a classic mid length layered bob without using product or blowdrying. I've been meaning to sit down and write this review....probably since the first time Hunter cut my hair, which was maybe 5 years ago? Phew! Hunter is a true artist and professional. My previous stylists had lacked imagination, and Hunter has really taken my hair through so many transitions and visions that it's downright impressive. I feel like there is a perception that some stylists can really only do a good job on long hair or short hair and not both, but Hunter is exceptionally capable at everything he does. My hair is proof! Hunter did my trims when I had long, curly, natural mermaid hair. When I was ready for a fresh look, he gave me a sassy, angled bob that blended perfectly in the back. Since then we have done a rockin' asymmetrical cut, a power pomp, a mohawk (yes, I'm serious), and some deadringer-for-Claire-Underwood cute, short blond styles in between. Between all that, Hunter has expertly cared for my hair through those awkward transition/growing out moments so that I never once felt ugly or like I needed to wear a hat. I always walk out of there feeling like a total babe. His color skills are also unbeatable - my highlights look way more natural than anybody else I see out and about. Like I said, true artist. Hunter is simply the best... I couldn't imagine working with another stylist or colorist, and believe me, I am super picky when it comes to my hair.
