Registering a COMPLAINT. Subject: Request for Refund Due to Unprofessional Conduct by Don Toothaker I wrote this letter to Hunts Photo Adventure Travel in February 2025. "I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to formally request a refund of my $7,236 fee for the photography tour to Sicily scheduled for January 28-Feb 7 2025, which I had to cancel. My decision to cancel was prompted by deeply concerning behavior exhibited by the tour leader, Don Toothaker, in a recent online post that I believe reflects poorly on both Hunts Photo Education and Experience Sicily. The post, which generated over 211 comments (which are still posted on his FB page) included inflammatory references to historical figures like Hitler and Trump, and displayed a pattern of aggression and bullying towards me and all the individuals who disagreed with his views. This behavior not only fostered a hostile environment, it opened a Political forum for extreme hateful comments and unpleasantries which left me feeling extremely intimidated and uneasy about participating in the tour. I was looking for a relaxing photo tour-yet the photo leader Don Toothaker showed me an evil, disgusting side of him-causing me doubt in his ability to be a good leader! As a participant, I signed up for a photography tour, expecting a positive, creative environment. Instead, I was confronted with a political discourse that was both offensive and unwelcoming. The aggressive responses from Mr. Toothaker towards dissenting opinions were disheartening and made it clear that this tour would not provide the supportive atmosphere I anticipated. I have documented and have hard copies of all 211 comments to illustrate the nature of his conduct. While I understand that my cancellation may have been deemed late, I believe that the circumstances surrounding Mr. Toothaker's behavior warrant reconsideration of my case. I feel it is essential for Experience Sicily and Hunts Photo Education to be aware of the detrimental impact that this kind of leadership can have on participants and the reputation on both Experience Sicily and Hunts Photo Adventure. I respectfully request a full refund of my tour fee, as my experience with Mr. Toothaker's conduct has created significant concerns about the environment I would be entering. I told them my concerns abt my damaged camera, but their expertise calmed my worries and they helped to clean my sensor for $70. I just moved here and was trying to find a place to get my film developed. i always heard good things about Hunt's so decided to give it a try and i'm sorry to say that at least for film development i'm never going back. Not only was it the most expensive place I've ever been to to get 35mm film developed, but the communication was awful. I waited over a month for one of the rolls of film only for it to be that an employee forgot to upload it. Also the person I spoke to when i first dropped the film off was just plain rude and patronizing. Definitely a bummer, i had high hopes. This is my go-to film lab in Boston. I get all my 35mm processed and scanned here, and these guys do a great job. 6megapixel Noritsu scans are their standard option. Often times your scans may have to be color corrected in post, but to be honest I prefer it this way. I'd rather keep control over how my images look than giving it all to the lab. Turnaround time is fair, because they have to send it to their main lab, which I believe is in Malden. Sometimes it can take up to a week, which is far slower than I'm used to back home in California. Prices for processing and scanning is competitive. Ask for a student discount if you're a student. read more

I came in willing to spend 2k on a new work camera. My sales guy was not motivated to sell, not showing full body cameras or packages didn't know his prices seemed like everything was a problem when the reason I'm there is to ask questions and look for solutions. I wanted to trade in my old camera since they advertise you can do that. Manager that came out to value my older camera really didn't show too much motivation and was more concerned about the broken flash lock, was not interested in asking why I was there to upgrade or what the purpose for the camera was. Why not give me advice or discount a package by 10% I don't know give me a student discount something, make me feel like they value me being there or advise me and tell me to sell it somewhere else. The store goal is to get you in a store, I was already in there ready to be educated on the best option for a wide lens camera, I felt that I was begging to be shown cameras with that option. Why not stay at home and buy from amazon and you don't have to go through traffic or the hustle or parking why go to a store thinking you will get proper professional advice. To me the kicker of this is that there is no motivation and manager and my sales person need to be more active, especially when the prices are about $2k with all accessories in. Twice I was having trouble with my Nikon 7200 camera and went into the store after calling and finding out that it was not at all busy and was so impressed with Jamie. The first time she was able to take the time needed to clean the inside of camera extremely well and the second time she was willing to carefully check to see whether my having dropped the camera (and having replaced the 18 to 300 lens that broke) was causing problems focusing and using the different apertures. Swamp Yankee. That's how my grandmother described our family. As such, we don't thrown things away. We get them fixed, if possible. So, the digital camera isn't working right. I've no idea how to deal with these delicate things, and figure there's someone that does. I go to Yelp. Lots of people tell me that the folks at Hunt's know their **** (cameras). Time goes by, but the repair doesn't go well. Hunts call, we discuss, I visit, they promise to make things right. And they do. Between Rob, George, and Natasha, the store did what so few do right these days. I might as well have brought a kazoo to the Philharmonic, as brought my low end camera to this store. But they treated me as if I had brought my infant to Mass General, and in the end, made things right. read more

Omer, Oh, Omer...if I weren't seriously happily married and totally in love with my husband I would have kissed you RIGHT ON THE SPOT when you handled my transaction lickety split like. So you must be wondering what did Omer do that deserves such an introduction, right? Well, lemme tell you, I was in dire need of a new charger for my Panasonic Lumix (highly recommend btw) and I procrastinated sooooo long to get my "lost" charger replaced that it was a day before we went on a Groupon to the Cape Ann Whale watch and I had no camera charged!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!?!?!? So I called Hunt's in Melrose, they didn't have it...although they are a HUGE store, they really don't have stuff in stock the way the should, but they were kind enough to say they could order it and I could get it in a day or so. Well, that's fine really, it is, if I didn't have a whale watch to go to at 8:30am the next morning. I asked where they would be getting it from, praying that it wasn't like Hadley or Providence or something like that...I was told it would be either Boston (just as bad as Hadley seriously) or Cambridge. CAMBRIDGE IT WAS!!! Melrose transferred me to Cambridge, spoke to someone on the phone to make sure that they had what I needed, he said yeah they had it, I said could have one held for me, he said there were loads of them, so I wouldnt have a problem getting one. Now it was getting there in less than an hour from Wakefield. I was stressing. Sprint Navigation to the rescue and the fact that it was after 7pm - Cambridge traffic wasn't too bad. Found an illegal spot in front of the store, grabbed the credit card and the camera and scoped out for Cambridge po-po's...all clear. Ran in and there were like loads of people in this little store, it was 10 to 8 and they closed at 8....I looked longingly at the guys behind the counter and held up my camera and said "I called earlier about a charger for my Panasonic" Omer looked at me and said "oh yea, you spoke with me..." I said "I'm parked so illegally..." he grabbed the camera, took out the battery, grabbed the charger off the wall, checked to make sure that it worked, told the customer he was working with that he was still helping them, and headed over to the register. My entire experience with Omer lasted no more than 15 minutes and I was back in my car, no ticket, no po-po's, no boot on my pretty green camaro. I love me some Omer! Needed a camera, stat, this week, so I went local, and so glad I went to Hunt's. Tasha, my sales rep, gets 6 stars for service and being cool. Like today, we traded stories on how we both used to be bouncers. She *thinks* she can beat me up, but *definitely* shoot night clubs better, xD! Being demanding on my gear, I tend to buy good stuff and keep it forever. So I asked a million questions and tried out 6 camera bodies. That was day 1. Tasha was extremely knowledgeable and knew where I was going, but didn't pressure to close the sale. After doing research, I came back and made my decision after trying a couple more bodies. On to accessories. We painstakingly went through lenses and flashes, and she came up with a used Nikon zoom that was half the price of something new and comparable, plus they were so pro looking. So right there I saved the money I lost by not buying on tax-free weekend. On day 3 I bought a flash, but she called me the next day and I came in the following day and tested it against something else she got in that day and I bought that instead. I highly recommend buying your camera local, even it's just a point and shoot. It's similar to buying a hi-fi, you need to see it in person. And why this Hunt's in Harvard Sq versus Melrose, or EP Levine's, or the big B&H in NYC? Well, if you get good service from a patient sales rep whose willing to spend time with you, it's incredibly valuable. I've been to Calumet, and while some reps are nice, I doubt I would of gotten the same attention. Oh, I saw the same used lens there the next day and it was 100 bucks more at Calumet over Hunt's. Hunt's is great if you are not a pro and you are not quite sure what you want. The selection is good enough, and they can courier over anything else the next day. And if paying retail bothers you, I paid less than a comparable "kit", plus flash, plus 8 gig card, plus filter, plus no-fault insurance for 3 years, by shopping creatively with the lens. There are no "deals" in cameras, just good or bad service, and Hunt's really came through. Go see Tasha and get yourself some! read more

I don't want to be overly harsh, I mean, I've never bought equipment here or anything so maybe they are really good at that, who knows. I just came in to get some 120 black and white and color film developed. Black and white and color go to different labs, they tell me, so the color should be ready by the end of the week, the black and white won't be ready for 10 days. 10 days! That is a damn long time, people. When I came back on the day the color was supposed to be ready, it wasn't back from the lab yet. And here's how they knew: they looked it up in a BINDER where they had WRITTEN DOWN all the orders that had gone out each day. A binder! They definitely do have computers, I've seen them. There's got to be a way to put that information into a computer. Somehow. It's the 21st century. The guys who work there are really nice, and when I eventually got the pictures they came out fine, although the service was definitely overpriced. (It was so expensive that blocked it out so I don't remember exactly, but the black and white was like $14 a roll, I got the impression that maybe they charged by the number of prints they had to make, because each roll had a different random price.) Hunt's may have other merits, but this is just not the place to go for developing, it's overpriced and it takes way too long. The search continues for a decent place to get my 120 film processed. Hunts, I don't get it. I've been in this store a handful of times and each time I walk away feeling bad about it. The customer service is truly awful. Despite being well staffed, staffers have to be approached in order to get some assistance. I stopped by to purchase some film, which is located behind the counter, and when I asked what my options are the guy pointed to the tiny boxes which can't be read from a distance. Zero enthusiasm, no explanation. It's shocking that a store that well staffed, that small, and that empty treats customers this way. Further, the fact that they're more expensive than online vendors, it's a wonder anyone decides to shop there at all. read more

I was very impressed by the quality of personal service at Hunt's Photo & Video. My Sony digital camera had stopped working, even though I had charged its battery, so I brought it to Hunt's. They were immediately willing to help the moment I walked in. They took the time and the effort to find a way to test the camera, ultimately by taking a new G battery out of its container and charging it up. To my relief, there was nothing wrong with my camera; it just needed a new battery, and I bought the one the had used to test it and saved myself the expense of buying a new camera. I would certainly go back to Hunt's Photo & Video! read more

On the day I purchased my new camera, Todd was extremely helpful. I came looking for a transitional camera, a step above a pocket point-and-shoot. I had done a ton of online research first, and visited other area stores. By the time I hit Hunt's, I knew which camera I wanted, but still wanted to hear about other options from knowledgeable people. If I were to base my review entirely on my one visit with Todd, I would rate Hunt's five stars. He was friendly, gave me plenty of attention while juggling several other customers, validated my own research, went out of his way to find me the ideal accessories, and gave me a good deal. On other visits to this store, I was helped by different reps. One of them rubbed me the wrong way, so this rating loses a star due to experiences with that person. Though he was also attentive and knowledgeable, I could not shake the very strong feeling that he was practicing his salesman skills on me. He poo-poo'd every item I came in to buy, and tried to push alternate items that probably suited his own needs more than mine. I ignored his advice, and went with my own instincts. Happy with my purchase. In general, this shop is way better than all other area stores I visited. read more

I showed up at Hunt's at 4:30 on Sunday evening after visiting a bunch of other "lesser" camera stores with the intention of just browsing their selection for a new camera and lenses until I spoke with Natasha. I was so impressed with her knowledge of every product I demoed. She had an answer to every question I asked without any hesitation. You just don't see this type of enthusiasm for or knowledge of your job anymore and it was really refreshing. Every time I was unsure about a lens she had already pulled another one out of the case for me to compare it with. I had a very specific sport I was purchasing for (skiing photography) and she was able to help me figure out exactly what I needed. Not only was Natasha completely on top of her game but she was willing and happy to stay with me for an additional 45 minutes after hours on a Sunday evening. I will certainly go back there for any additional purchases I make. TL;DR: Hunt's hires people who are knowledgeable and passionate about photography. Ask for Natasha, she knows her stuff inside and out. read more

I'll bump them up to three stars from my last review. I've had to go in here recently when I needed some rain covers right away and Calumet only had the very-serious-professional grade ($150 instead of $8) models available. The staff person I talked to was great, she showed me exactly where they were, gave some recommendations, and was very personable. I needed some prints later, and while Zeff was able to turn them around faster and I went with them, the person at Hunt's was helpful and honest about turnaround time. I appreciate that. Since most of my previous gripes with them had been customer service related, I'll bump them up in my books. I'll be glad to shop here again, especially since they're at least regional (Calumet is national) and a brick and mortar photo shop. read more

Gosh, I went in to return something that I bought there, but it wasn't working. My assistant and I both tried to make it work. Employee # 1 tried to make it work, to no avail, so then began waiting on someone else, without telling me she was jumping ship!!!! After waiting for Employee #2 to finish with another customer, Employee #2 then did the exact same thing as Employee #1, trying to make it work in the exact same ways, yet hadn't heard any of the previous conversation I had had with Employee #1, so we had to go through the same hoops all over again. It was a frustrating, time-consuming transaction until I finally got a refund. I would never go there again! Go to Calumet in Cambridge where the staff know their stuff, act professionally, and treat clients well, too. Word to the staff at Hunt's Cambridge: wait on ONE customer at a time until the transaction is complete. That will make everyone's experience much better overall. read more

I can see I am not the only one who has been taken care of so well by Natasha! She was absolutely amazing! After calling another branch of Hunt's looking for a used DSLR, I serendipitously decided to give the Cambridge shop a shot. Natasha answered, and stayed on the phone for close to 30 minutes, calling all about the region to find me the camera I wanted, and was successful to boot! She even called back to make sure I had the other accessories I needed (memory card, etc) and it didn't at all feel like a 'sell'. When I did not know what the differences in additional lenses were, she patiently walked me through them, explaining in real world situations. Since I had been doing research on the camera itself elsewhere and online, we did not get too much into the technical merits of the camera itself, but going on how I was led through the accessories, I can only imagine it would have been a great experience. The other benefit of doing research online was knowing the going price of this model...and Hunt's beat the lowest auction prices by $50! I am very happy with Hunt's and Natasha, and will absolutely make this my go-to shop for all camera needs moving forward. read more

Amazing! I just had the finest customer service experience of my life with Hunt's Photo & & Videos's superb staff and manager Ray Levesque! I needed to purchase a new LCD projector, they worked with me personally to trouble-shot and get the new Epson LCD projector connected and running well to my MAC. I drove one hour from Hampton, NH to Melrose, MA to shop with them! AND, I'll do it anytime I need photo and video equipment! They were incredibly knowledgable, generous with their time and outstanding expertise. Honestly, I have never ever had such a positive sales experience. I had two reels of color film developed here, thinking it would be a lot better than cvs (as they dont return your negatives and arent a photo shop) but alas I was mistaken. I paid $50 to get my two rolls developed which is very pricy, BUT would be a fine price if my photos were great. I'm looking through them now, and I can see the part of film brackets/lining on the print. I'm not pleased with the results as I paid $50. CVS would have done a lot better. read more

Me and the manager had a misunderstanding. I thought my camera lens was just going to be diagnosed, not fixed. He thought I approved it being fixed. After they realized the problem, they gave me the lens back very discounted in order to make the problem right. Don't bother going downtown, this is where you need to go for a new camera, lens, bag, film, paper, filters, tripods, everything! They'll hook you up with the best (ahem) "student" discounts. Everything there is quality. Their used cameras are cleaned and tested to work. They can order stuff in from all over creation, and not charge you extra. It may look very shiny and commercial, but the down home service is warm, welcoming, and more importantly knowledgeable. Perhaps too knowledgeable. I'm watching you Hunts. read more

The salesperson I dealt with at the Harvard Square location was very deceptive. I would never shop there again. On 11/18/2006, I bought the Canon TC-80N3 electronic remote release so that I could take pictures of the Leonid meteor shower that night. I was somewhat hesitant, because the price was over $40 more than online stores and there was a chance that the skies would be too cloudy for any good pictures. I decided to buy it and return it if I ended up not using it. Before I paid for the item, I explicitly asked the salesperson what their return policy was. He told me that I could return it within 7 days, as long as I had the receipt. Well, as anyone from Boston can tell you, that night was very overcast and cloudy--absolutely no possibility of any meteor viewing. I ended up not even removing the remote from its plastic wrap. The next day, on 11/19/2006, I went to return the remote. The same salesperson handled the transaction. He asked me how the remote was, and I told him that I hadn't used it because it was too cloudy the night before. When he processed the return, he told me that there was a 15% restocking fee. Well, this annoyed me because he hadn't mentioned this the day before when I asked him about the return policy, and I told him so. He then proceeded to insult me, by saying, "Well, you were going to return it even if you had used it." No, if I had used it, I would have kept it. If he had told me about the restocking fee, I wouldn't have bought it because I knew I might not be using it. Instead, this dishonest salesman didn't inform me about the restocking fee and bilked me out of $25. I'll never go there again. read more
