After a so-so to poor experience with another Cambridge vet, I walked into HAC one day to get a feel for the place. Dr. Chris Ulrich came over to meet my dog even though he had a full clinic and we were not yet a patient and had no pressing health problems. He spent 5-10 minutes with us, just chatting, lavishing love on my little mutt, and taking guesses at her breed make-up. I made an appointment for some vaccines, and our first real appointment was a marvel. He took the time to explain a lot of dog physiology, and breed-specific behaviors and potential health issues to watch for down the road that were helpful to understand about my dog. I had asked the so-so vet some questions and gotten responses like "don't worry about it, she's a young dog" but Dr. Ulrich entertained my every concern and gave me thorough answers that were a balanced weighing of the vet medical literature and knowing a bit about my dog and her life. He spent maybe 45 minutes with us and I got the sense that I could have asked a million more questions. He listens very closely and gives the impression that he is 100% available to you. A very kind person, extremely intelligent and very up-to-date with current research. Also his staff is TOPS - the vet tech named Liz who mans the check-in counter and assists if needed in the room was a truly kind woman with lots of love for animals, just like Dr. Ulrich. PLUS, the visit fee was almost 30% cheaper than the other place in Cambridge we went to, and the experience was 200% better. I feel so much better now knowing I have a vet whose advice and counsel I trust very completely in the event that anything happens to my doggie. read more

Truly fantastic - I can't recommend Huron Vets enough. We took our 1 year old cat in for his initial appointment recently and everyone at Huron was wonderful. The reception staff took care of entering all of his vaccination records into the system right away and there was very little paperwork for us to do ourselves. The vet tech/nurse did a great job calming down our cat who wasn't too happy at having been in his carrier and she was so kind to him throughout his check up, comforting him during an injection and eye drops. Dr. McEwan was also wonderful, explaining everything as he went along, and he was very thorough. We were really impressed when he asked about how our cat (adopted and moved from another continent where I'd been working) was adjusting to his new home after his travels, clearly concerned not just for our cat's physical health but also his happiness. Just like the vet tech/nurse, he was so good with our cat. He was very patient and helpful in answering our many questions regarding food, teeth, vaccines, etc. He identified a small scratch on our cat's eye that had been bothering him quite a bit, and prescribed some preventative antibiotics and gave us very useful advice on how to administer them with minimal distress. Oh - and even as first time clients they were happy to move up our appointment at fairly short notice when we became concerned about our cat's eye, which we really appreciated. read more

I find them irritatingly unaccommodating. Since they are a small, boutique operation, and one that touts exceptional service, I would think that they would be more agile and be willing to make things work, but alas, their service feels similar to that of Sears or Best Buy. It's a shame when a small business carries a "we're better than you" attitude. read more

While my dog can't exactly review her experiences at Huron Vet, I feel fairly confident (from her wagging tail and slobbery kisses) that she has plenty of love for Dr. Ulrich and his staff. We first brought her here a year ago after adopting her from Tennessee, and have been loyal patients ever since the first visit. Dr. Ulrich won her heart (and ours) immediately with his kind manner and obvious respect for, and understanding of, animals. He always takes the time to get our pup comfortable for the visit by rubbing her belly, letting her give him slobbery kisses and sharing yummy treats-her tail actually wags in anticipation of the vet, which is quite the rarity. He and his staff are great at communicating with the animals and also with their 'people' about basic concerns (weight, vaccines, etc.) and the more complicated issues (viruses, muscular problems). I always leave the office feeling like I actually learned something valuable about my dog and about my ability to keep her happy and healthy. Everyone is friendly and attentive, phone calls are returned quickly, and appointments are easy to obtain in advance (although emergencies can be squeezed in last minute). Unlike many vets, the prices charged are actually reasonable, a factor that probably doesn't impact my dog's rating nearly as much as it does mine! If you're in the cambridge/somerville/medford area, I HIGHLY recommend Huron Vet... I can't think of anywhere I'd rather take my pet. read more

Knowing this clinic is close to home and gets stellar reviews, there was no question where to take the new addition to our home... except that we couldn't get an appointment for more than 2 months. The dog is experiencing an issue with her skin, so the visit have been more than just a regular check up. The response was an unapologetic, "we can't help you." read more

We've been taking our dog to Dr. Ulrich since we adopted him more than two years ago. From the very beginning, we could tell that this was the best clinic for Milo. Dr. Ulrich is knowledgeable and administers care in the most gentle manner, which we truly appreciate. The veterinary staff at Huron Veterinary Hospital are well-trained, highly competent, and very professional. Recently, Milo became ill while we were traveling on vacation, and had to be admitted into a veterinary hospital for care. Dr. Ulrich and his staff communicated well with us and the veterinary hospital, to ensure that Milo got the treatment that was best suited for him. Upon our return home, Dr. Ulrich phoned us to follow-up on Milo's health and progress. In summary, a great doctor, great staff, and convenient hours. I simply adore Huron Veterinary Hospital. I was forced to switch to a new vet recently because my last one was avaricious, manipulative, and aggressive, so I was slightly nervous about how my next experience would be. However, I needed not to worry one bit as this place is absolutely lovely. I brought my cat James here because I suspected he had internal parasites. Dr. Beale was so kind and knowledgeable and she administered the dewormer and flea medicine in such a gentle fashion. James of course loves her. He also had a spring in his step the next day when the worming medicine started to kick in, so that was nice. I then had to return a month later because he seemed to have a UTI and he had his blood and urine checked - all at an extremely reasonable price. Furthermore, you can get medication on site there and it is also very well priced. Sadly my cat passed his worms onto my parents' cat Samantha so their took her in to Dr. Ulrich for treatment and had a similarly amazing experience. Samantha, who can be a bit surly at times, completely melted when she was with Dr. Ulrich. My dad was in awe of this man's cat whispering skills and couldn't stop talking about it. I should also note that the front desk person and veterinary techs are all lovely as well, and clearly true animal lovers. I overheard one of the vet techs chatting away to a sick doggy in there and it was so so sweet. It's nice to think that they care for these pets as if they were their own. Needless to say we all will be returning to Huron Veterinary Hospital when we need efficient and quality healthcare for our little ones! read more

I recently relocated to Boston from the west coast and needed to find a vet for my family of mini-dachshunds. I considered going to Banfield at the PetSmart in Everett but I really wanted a private practice where I could get to know the veterinarian on a more personal level. Plus with 5 dogs, although they are young and small, can get costly with the various wellness plans offered by the corporate hospitals like Banfield and VCA. I consulted yelp and insiderpages and found the Huron Clinic was the only hospital nearby where all the reviews were positive, 4 stars or more, and there was no complaint about the cost of care. So I made an appointment for my two youngest girls to get spayed and microchipped and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Ulrich is very personable. He also obviously loves animals as he was quick to pick up my dogs and cuddle them. When I feared the youngest puppy's wound wasn't healing correctly a few days after surgery, he asked me to bring her over right away and he was there at the door to meet me. Fortunately she was fine but I knew then I had found our vet. Now I can't wait to take my other 3 in to see him. As for his pricing it is similar to what other vets charge as far as the spaying. You can probably find a better deal with Banfield for microchipping but I think you will have better piece of mind if you see Dr. Ulrich. read more

I have little to add to all the great reviews. I have two cats and two dogs and we are incredibly happy with Dr. Ulrich (and because we have lived in many places we have had many vets). I just want to add that I see discussion of how long a wait there is to see Dr. Ulrich for the first time. That may be, but I can assure all of those people that are waiting that we have always been able to see Dr. Ulrich in the same day we called if our pets were sick. It's very nerve-wracking to find a new vet, but I have been beyond pleased with my experiences at Huron. Dr. Ulrich and his staff are amazing! They are extremely thorough and I never feel rushed like at some vets. Dr. Ulrich takes time to answer all of my questions and makes thoughtful recommendations based on what is best for my 'baby' not what is going to make the most money. I am an easy target when it comes to my dog and I never feel taken advantage of here. The prices for care are beyond reasonable. Decided to try Huron Animal Clinic when I got a puppy based on the almost unanimous five star reviews here on Yelp. Everyone in the office is awesome! Dr. Ulrich has such a calm demeanor and was so gentle and patient with my lab mix pup Sadie. He spent about 20-30 min checking her out (it was her first check up since I adopted her), showed me how to clean her ears and gave me some tips on clipping her nails and brushing her teeth. He had some opinions on what other kind of breeds might be in her crazy mix which was really interesting. She was up to date on her shots and I picked up two doses of heart worm medication and two doses of flea and tick repellent. I believe the visit total was only about $80 - so much less than I was expecting! They are very accommodating and open on Saturdays which is a huge plus for me since I can't take off time from work to bring Sadie to the vet. I would definitely recommend Huron to any pet owner!! read more

Huron made my cat's annual so easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy, from booking an appointment to seeing the doctor. Soooo glad I found them through Yelp. The staff are professional, warm, and very caring. Dr. Ulrich did a great job with Bijou, performing a thorough checkup even though the cat was super determined to creep away and shrink into the nearest nook or cranny under the examination table. Dr. Ulrich and his team are really amazing. My puppy always tries to run behind the desk to say hi to the vet techs, and and he always has kisses for the Doc. We've had a slew of reasons to visit (from normal check-ups to emergency digestive pyrotechnics), and they're always professional and make sure my fur kid gets the attention he needs. Dr. Ulrich is a great vet and a great person who loves and cares animals. Some vets, I feel as if they are recommending things just because they want to make money not because they think it is needed. At least, two occasions, Dr. Ulrich checked my dog and weaved the fee because it was short visit (as I was told by several people my dog has a bump and maybe cancer - luckily only rib spreading wide with age). Additionally, my dog is a neurotic dog, he hates staying on the check-up table - my dog had to remove his stitches - Dr. Ulrich did it on a sofa (as my dog ran away to the sofa) and giving him kisses, so my dog was less stressed. The place is clean, receptionists and docs normally give my puppy a treat so that my dog will not develop aversion to the hospital. read more

I've been taking my cat and dog to Huron Veterinary Hospital for nearly 4 years now, and every time I go I am reminded how much I love this place. Everyone who works there, from the front desk staff to the techs to the vets are caring, compassionate, and genuinely love and care about my animals. My dog is nervous and the staff always spends time feeding her treats, petting her and playing with her to make her feel more comfortable before they proceed with an exam. Both my pets have seen both Dr. Leef and Dr. Ulrich and I highly recommend them both. They provide excellent medical care and advice and always take the time to listen to me about my concerns and answer all my questions and they never make me feel rushed. I've had pets all my life and been to a number of vets, but Huron is by far the best experience I have ever had. We've met Dr. McEwan and Dr. Ulrich, and was so very impressed by both of them. Dr. McEwan is incredibly knowledgeable and kind. I have learned more about my pets in one visit with him than I have in the past 3 years of vets' visits. I also very much appreciate that he talks me through treatment plans (in our case, vaccines), and explains where I can safely choose to minimize cost by holding off on certain options (eg bordetella every 6 months instead of annually, or feline leukemia for a mature indoor cat). Dr. Ulrich is calm, engaging, and very good at what he does. He treated my dog's ear infection, discussed prevention techniques (that did not involve buying any special, expensive solutions), and even took the time to speak with me about my dog's behavioral issues. In fact, both vets were far more knowledgeable about canine behavior than any other vet I have encountered. Honestly, I cannot recommend Huron vet enough. They're fantastic! read more

This is my first yelp review. We inherited Dr. Ulrich and Huron Village when we adopted a 5 year old orange gentle giant of a cat from a friend. They have provided fantastic care from preventive maintenance to tooth extractions and arthritis symptom relief. Dr. Ulrich has always explained things thoroughly and sensibly (I am a medical professional for humans). Our cat became suddenly ill at age 12 and we saw Dr. Leef who was also amazing and very compassionately discussed his poor prognosis with us (stomach cancer). We were referred to Blue Pearl for further testing and did decide to put him down. We were heartbroken but received wonderful heartfelt notes from Huron and Blue Pearl. Fast forward 6 month and we have adopted a rescue from Salem Shelter who is another gentle soul with very little known about her history. She saw Dr. McEwan who was both knowledgeable and professional. I love that he is a former research scientist/chemist and was a vet tech at Huron before going to Veterinary school. Everyone in the practice has been fantastic and they have cared incredibly well for our pets. read more

I love love LOVE this place. My dog is super nervous, but she found an immediate affection for Dr. Ulrich. All of the nurses genuinely love animals. The best vet I've ever been to. My dog has gone here for numerous "things" and we've experienced nothing less than professionalism and animal compassion. I would recommend this vet to anyone. I am still going to Huron and still find Ulrich to be VERY caring. My cats are getting older and thus more issues are unfortunately arising. However, he is kind, explains things, is sensitive to cost, and moreso personally follows up on test results in a speedy manner. And, he hasn't lost the touch of making you and your pet feel welcome. Dr. Urlich is fantastic, as well as the new Vet (sorry forgot her name). Both are friendly with our cats, and have been hugely helpful with one of our cats eatting orders. They are friendly when we stop by just to get him weighed (for free) and note it on his documents to keep track over time. read more

I'd love to give this place a great review like everyone else but unfortunately the inconsiderate and rude receptionist won't give me the chance. I couldn't get to my regular vet in NH (I live in Somerville) and my dog was having some very alarming symptoms that I wanted to get checked out immediately. I had heard great things about this place so I thought i'd try calling them. The receptionist was rude as I explained my problem then asked if I was a current patient. When I explained no, but I was always looking for a local vet as to avoid the drive to NH for every appt she sighed heavily and said that although they DID have appointments that day, they really had to save them "in case our actual clients need them." I went on to explain that this was as close to an emergency as I'd ever experienced with this dog and she sighed and told me no again then told me "It wouldn't be the worst thing if you had to call.." and listed 2 very poorly reviewed Clinics in the area. I explained that I had heard terrible things about them and was trying to avoid it and she laughed and said "Yea, I know." So in short I'm sure this is a great place to have as a vet, but if you're not a "current patient" and have an emergency, this is not the place to go. I'm not mad they wouldn't see me, plenty of vets nicely explained that they had no openings, but this lady just wouldn't give me an opening and was incredibly rude about it. huron is wonderful. we had our dog spayed here and absolutely loved them. they were super great doing a free post check up to make sure everything went well and our pup had no problems at all. the people that works at huron are super helpful and friendly. their prices are extremely reasonable and i believe our dog gets exponentially better care here than she did at some other higher priced vets around town. read more

I am so glad to see Chris Ulrich getting the stars he deserves! This man is a true saint. He has been the vet for my two rescue kitties for all 1.5 years of their little furry feline lives. He became their vet after I saw how amazing he is with cats while volunteering with Charles River Alleycats (CRA). CRA works to stop pet overpopulation by spaying and neutering feral cats that people are feeding. It's called TNR (trap, neuter, and return) and Chris is one of only a handful of vets that will work with feral cats - it is a special skill. Chris still does vet work for CRA's ferals and friendly kitties and he is truly compassionate and caring. He is patient and kind with people also. Every time I take a cat there (mine or a Charles River cat), I know the cat will get top notch care from a man who loves cats as much as I do. The only problem is now that word is out how great he is (and how reasonable his prices are), his practice is jammed. read more
