As a first time cat parent, I always felt comfortable bringing Wobbles to Back Bay Vet Clinic. She was already 8 years old when I adopted her so we came for semi-annual checkups. Dr. Graham and all the nurses were gentle and patient. Dr. Graham in particular did a great job of explaining medical terms in a way that was easy to understand. When I brought in Wobbles to check on a weird lump, they determined that it might be cancerous and referred me to a local pet hospital where it was diagnosed as an untreatable cancer. I appreciated Dr. Graham's compassion when he broke the news to me and all the care the entire team showed to Wobbles. during the process. They've made her transition from our old vet in Maryland so smooth and always provide the highest standard of care. My pup has a really sensitive stomach and while we were trying to figure out the cause they recommended a few different diets I could try before making us go through a series of expensive tests, which to me is a sign of a vet you can trust. My fur baby loves all the treats they have and as a human, I'm a big fan of the amenities like water and coffee in the office, food for sale on the spot and an easy-to-use online pharmacy. Due to COVID, I was having trouble booking an appointment for my rabbit's annual check-up. He was way overdue for an exam and had been dealing with stasis a few times this year, so I wanted to get him checked out ASAP. The front desk and vet techs were SO friendly and nice. I dropped my bunny off with the vet tech while they called to get more information about him. The vet called within 10 minutes with his exam results, which I thought was fairly quick considering all his previous vets took at least 30-45 minutes for a full exam. I am unsure if they did any gland cleaning on him like bunny vets typically do; unfortunately I was too worried about his health results and forgot to ask. However, the vet seemed knowledgable about bunnies and answered all my questions patiently. All in all, the whole appointment was about 18 minutes. The last thing to note is that this place is on Newbury, so you're paying Newbury prices. His 10 minute exam was $85. You also need to be mindful of parking and traffic in the area, especially on weekends. I'm very happy that my bunny is healthy, but I might look into more budget-friendly vets next time. read more

If you want take a chance on being gouged with a whole lot of unnecessary tests, misdiagnosis' and being taken advantage as a worried pet owner, then this is the place for you. I brought my cat here as a first time customer on an emergency visit due to excessive drooling and the fact she wasn't eating or drinking. Backbay veterinary was the only place I could find open and able to see my cat the same day. I explicitly indicated that her symptoms seemed to indicate something was in her mouth so, start by looking there. After dropping her off, I recieve a call sometime later from Dr. Sorbo who stated that he thinks the best route to go would be to run some tests (blood, leukemia, etc) to which I agree, thinking the doctor has already followed my instructions and this is the next step. A little time later Dr. Sorbo calls me again saying the tests have revealed nothing so of course I'm now asking more questions thinking what next steps are. During this conversation I ask him if they made sure to look in her mouth good? Dr. Sorbo tells me that he was unable to get a good look in her mouth because she was quite irritated/scared/etc and they do not like to sedate animals there. He recommended me to take her home and monitor her as he could find nothing wrong. The next day Dr. Sorbo calls to check up and I inform him she has declined even further; Dr. Sorbo recommends I bring her back in. The final diagnosis was that there was an ulcer in her MOUTH of all places! At this point I express my dissatisfaction and that I feel I was overcharged and the tests that were run were completely unncessary. Dr. Sorbo ended up comping my exam fee as a courtesty (not because I had to return totally unnecessarily). I'd also like to point out I've never taken my pet to a vet where I couldn't go with (but COVID)... I obviously would have called them out on not looking in her mouth and would have never authorized these tests under normal circumstances where I could see what they were doing; they totally took advantage of that fact and I wonder how many people they've done this to. Fast forward a bit: I want to return to Back Bay to get a rabies shot in hopes they are willing to discount this based on my previous history and that I still feel I was overcharged by $500. First they deny any discount and I go through the whole story about my first and second visit, etc. Finally they decide they will give me a $30 discount off an otherwise $130ish visit which is more like a slap in the face, that's 6% of my $500 overcharge. For $500 I'm honestly looking at taking them to small claims. On another note, I do I feel they were professional and curteous through the whole ordeal but I will never take my pet back here. They were also the most expensive I could find calling around for exam prices and rabies shots.. even with their 'discount'. read more

Was a client at the clinic for years but unfortunately had to move on. My dog has allergies and I tried different things for her at the clinic, some of them worked better than others. Earlier this year I scheduled an appointment since my dog was feeling discomfort in her mouth and the vet that examined her told me it was due to bad teeth.  I trusted her and scheduled an oral cleaning, which she said could cost up to 1500 dollars if situation was really really bad. During surgery she called me to say her mouth was even worse than she thought so more teeth would need to be extracted and this would mean a bill of over 2000. I told her that was too much for me and asked her to remove enough teeth (the worst ones) to keep it at the maximum we agreed on prior to the surgery. She did so and after a recovery period for my dog, her mouth discomfort came back full speed and vet spoke to me as if it was my fault because I didn't allow her to remove all the teeth she needed. Then, I took my dog for an anal gland expression, which my dog needs monthly,  and on the occasion vet was there. She examined my dog  to make sure her recovery was going as expected. During that time, and due to her allergies, my dog's lips were red and a bit swollen. Vet failed to notice that or just minimized it, because she told me my dog's recovery was going well.  After just a couple of days on that same week, I called clinic again because was concerned about my dog's lips situation and asked if vet could prescribe me something for that. Since she saw my dog just a couple of days prior I assumed this would be ok, and sent pictures of my dog's mouth to the clinic by email. I was told I needed to schedule an urgent appointment to have her lips checked, which would cost me more money (urgent appointments are more costly that standard ones). I was very frustrated because vet had just seen her and her lips were already in a bad shape back then! So I politely complained and got an answer that again made me feel guilty because "pet care is expensive". I have all of that on email. Then, I decided to stop letting this clinic suck out my money for no reason and took my dog to Boston Veterinary Clinic. There, they examined my dog and said what she was experiencing, based on that examination and her precious medical records, was just a very common allergy reaction. They gave me apoquel and my dog has been  ABSOLUTELY FINE ever since (it's been about 2 months).  My takeaway is: I guess it is more profitable to recommend oral surgeries and infinite appointments than prescribe a pill that would solve the issue or look into her medical records.  Last but not least, I tried to schedule an anal gland expression this week at your clinic because it is more conveniently located for me and I do love the techs that work there. No vet would need to be involved. I was told I wouldn't be able to do so in the future (just that last time) because I transfered my dog's care to a different clinic. The person I spoke to even hung up on me. I guess I have been blacklisted for politely complaining? I feel very disrespected. I am willing to talk to someone about this and clarify anything in my story. I also want to acknowledge there are vets and technicians in this clinic that treated me and my dog right throughout the years I was a client, but these recent experiences were just too much for me. In short: Great place, right next to the green line, but wow, the PRICING. I thought my last vet was expensive. This place is definitely Back Bay pricing. Communication/Scheduling: 5/5 I've been trying to get my cat a wellness exam for weeks. I called multiple places and left messages. BBVC was the only one to respond and give me an appointment within a month. Front desk staff are super friendly. They have after work hours too which is great. Staff: 5/5 Dr Wang was fantastic. She did not try to upsell me on stuff that I didn't need or could easily order cheaply online like vitamins or supplements, and told me based on my cat's age and history what shots would be unnecessary vs recommended. She and all the vet techs I interacted with were lovely. Building: 2/5 office itself is clean and not depressing/scary looking, but it is not very accessible. There are stairs out front, second floor office, 1 flight of stairs up. I didn't see an elevator. Entrance was crowded and I could easily see this getting tricky with a big crate or reactive dogs at the door. Pricing: Oof... 2/5 - I asked when I was scheduling the appt the cost for a senior wellness check and they asked for a $125 deposit (!) And could not give me even a ball park on what it might be for just the exam (not the additional lab work, imaging or whatever prescriptions that would be needed!). This was worrisome but I didn't have any other options at this point so I decided to go through with it. Senior wellness exam, senior lab work, WITHOUT shots ended up being $450 (!!). Wellness exam portion was $125 (I don't know why the front desk could not have told me this up front - why the mystery?), but the labs were $250+. They apply the deposit so I ended up paying $325 the day of but wow, the sticker shock. They also offer a comprehensive senior exam package for $875 (!!!) which is apparently $500 off the total price(?!). Thank god my cat is healthy, I don't know what actually sick animals have to pay to get care here. Pro-Tip: go to the ARL free vaccine clinic! We've been seeing Dr. Wheeler since 2021 and she and the team have provided the absolute best care for our cat Bonnie. Our cat has had her canines removed (due to teeth resorption) and two chain mastectomies this year, and everyone from the receptionists, to the vet techs and the off-hour support team has gone above and beyond with ensuring she was well taken care of. They always follow up and are very responsive to any questions (and we had many for them especially post-op!) I have two dogs who I've taken here since they were puppies. The staff and vets have always been extremely friendly and communicative with us. While I was on a road trip, my dog got an ear infection and the out-of-state vet who we saw gave us medicine we had to put in his ears daily and it really scared and upset him. Back Bay Vet a year later, when my dog got an ear infection again, however, saw that he's fussy about his ears and gave him the medicine in the clinic that lasts 10 days and means I don't have to corner him at home and cause him distress every day. Back Bay Vet recommends the best treatments, take your dogs personality into consideration and fit you into appointments very timely. I wish I wasn't moving because I'd stay with them forever if I could! read more

When we first got our rescue dog she was quite sick so we were calling their office often! Their staff was really patient and would answer all our questions. The vet techs really are amazing and always make our dog feel comfortable even when she's scared. I think it's also good that they tell you your options and are pretty upfront with pricing. I won't be going back. I used to use Back Bay when Dr. Jou worked here. She was terrific. Subsequently, I had a bad experience with Sager (definitely not fear-free) and decided to try some at-home vets (not bad but they offer limited services and the turnover in personnel seems high). In April I noticed a small growth on my BFF and decided in September to try Back Bay again. I paid $200 for a check-up and fecal analysis and was talked into dental work in November with an accompanying deposit of $200. I canceled the dental work appointment the following day after realizing that I had gone to find out about growth and left with no answers about my principal concern. Still, instead, an appointment for dental surgery that I was told would cost anywhere from $750 to $2400 exclusive of a biopsy. I still don't understand how I got talked into this and why I left without getting a biopsy. Today, I received a troubling lengthy email about the dental surgery that was supposed to have been cancelled. I had to send several emails to confirm the appointment had been canceled. read more

Best vet ever!!! They are so attentive and caring!!! My dog had done a heart ultrasound in Brazil because she was diagnosed with a heart murmur and other vets didn't want to refill her meds for me when I got back to the US because they said the ultrasound was in Portuguese even though all they needed to see was the imagery to know what was wrong. Other vets wanted to charge me hundreds for another ultrasound. Not back bay though!!!They were so accommodating!!! Not just this time, but every time I need them!!!When I ran out of meds on another trip they quickly emailed me a new prescription same day. When I called them to tell them my dog was fainting they recommended me a few pet hospitals for me to find a cardiologist because their traveling cardiologist wouldn't have an opening as soon as I needed. They are so sweet they have been texting me everyday to check on my dog since I told them I couldn't find another cardiologist on the places they recommended and they are trying to contact their cardiologist to see if she can make an exception for me!!! I can't be more thankful for them!!i know my dog is in the best hands when I take her there and I can't recommend enough!!!its very stressful for a mother to not know what is going on with their child and how long she still has on this earth and back bay has been there for me 110% through it all!!! Dr Suzy and Dr King are two amazing women who are truly care about their clients and patients. Just two days ago, my pooch had a cyst rupture and was bleeding profusely. I was so scared and worried and called and got an appointment right away! They took care of my dog and, cleaned and treated her and gave her antibiotics and she is on the mend! We were sad that we couldn't go to Heal Vet clinic in Watertown due to long wait list times but were happy when we found Back Bay Vet from a recommendation through a friend. They are a well organized group especially during COVID and communicate to your before, during, and after the appointment. I loved that I was able to actually speak to the vet while they were with our puppy and ask lots of questions without feeling rushed or inferior. The app makes things easier to schedule and coordinate but it definitely needs some work/updating when requesting appointments for a smoother process. Pre COVID the clinic was worth the much higher than average charges due to the level of convenience of it being in Back Bay. Now that has changed and the drive to another clinic makes far more sense. There is a new one just opened in Needham which is 15 minutes away with free parking and windows one can see through while pet is examined and treated. Once you arrive outside the Newbury Street Clinic and you call for them to get your pet ... they won't take your pet without you giving them your credit card information over the phone. Asking for credit card information from people while they are in public is a horrible business practice. Not to keep those records to make follow up appointments easier makes it even worse. There is no outside waiting room so one could make a great living just sitting around waiting to hear the requested credit card information disclosed in public which includes the date and card security information. Our follow up appointment for a required vaccine booster was charged at $200 for what I thought would be free and part of the prior exam. No disclosure of this additional required fee was made to me when I agreed to the non necessary vaccination (paid for with exam) during the annual exam. While it was convenient to walk to this clinic and the higher charges were expected for Newbury Street the far lower level of service one now gets are no longer worth it. There are no regulations on how much a vet can charge or how much they need to disclose additional charges ahead of time and this one takes full advantage of this loophole. read more

If you have so much money and you don't know what to do with it .. sure ! You will love this clinic. Otherwise, find your pet a clinic that actually cares about animals not money and save yourself the troubles. My cat had a lesion on her abdomen. Instead of prescribing antibiotic and treat the most common/probable cause for skin lesions they told me they need to do some blood works that will cost me more, to see if she has an increase in her "eosinophils" . I said no, and I got her OTC antibiotic and she recovered within days and shE was fine. 2 weeks after that, I took her again to get her annual vaccines and they told me "she has masses in her abdomen that might be cancerous and we need to take a sample "fine needle biopsy" .. i was scared !! They said immediately that it will cost $130 and I agreed. 10 minutes later they called and said it was only fat and everything is fine now !! My cat is fat ... I do not a biopsy to tell me that, plus you make my cat go through the pain of the biopsy to get $130??? So unethical Finally, I needed to get health certificates for my 2 cats to travel internationally. This clinic is contracted with a third party company in Florida that does the paperwork, this company estimated the cost for ONLY the paperwork to be around $780 !! These fees are an addition to the cost of the examination that is decided by the clinic!!! I ignored them and took my cats to Medford Pet Clinic who did the paperwork + physical exam and everything for the 2 cats for only $700. Charging people crazy prices makes them think twice before adopting a pet or treat any medical conditions that they have. I understand it's your business but fare prices will still make you enough profits and keep your practice ethical and humane. read more

We have been seeing Doctor Graham for about a year and a half, and it has been the most amazing experience we have ever had with a veterinarian. We have a 7 year old Basenji and besides being one of the cutest and practical city dogs, they also come with tons of medical problems. So that makes us frequent vet visitors. It wasn't until now that I felt compelled to write a 5 star review about a Vet or a practice. Dr. Graham is very thorough with his examinations and explains everything in a manner that you can understand and feel comfortable with the treatment. Also, he always tells you the cost of the recommended treatment and makes sure it's something you are comfortable with. Another thing that has impressed me is that he follows up personally with you, he will either call you or email you. He even called us after we had an emergency in the middle of the night and had to rush to the MSPCA emergency center where we paid for a bunch of tests and got no phone calls to let us know the results, very disheartening as we like to support any organizations that helps animals. As my good friend Dick C. is fond of saying, when it comes to medical care, the best is none too good. I've been bringing my dogs to BBV for over 20 years for this very reason. The doctors have all been knowledgeable, capable, personable, candid, and very responsive in discussion to achieve the best approaches and practical courses of action in unique circumstances--as well as full attention and thoroughness in scheduled check-ups and annualized care. I would readily confess to be a person of thrift-and veterinary services generally are not looked upon as a good deal financially-I've never thought twice about a single bill from BBV --I mention this for the obvious reason that a majority of people look for great value in animal expenditures-and those I know who use their services seem to be well satisfied in this regard. What is most important to me, however, is that my dog (should the need arise) has superb 24/7 coverage-- she sleeps fine pretty much oblivious to this--I, on the other hand, thrive on knowing they are essentially no more than a stone's throw away --that is 'value' which can only be described (borrowing from the old Mastercard commercials) as 'priceless.' When my beloved German Shepard passed away unexpectedly, Dr. Erin Carey reached out to me directly and expressed her sympathies. It was a tough time but it meant SOOO much to hear from Dr. Carey. Now, 6 months later as I have a new puppy it was a no brainer where I'd be taking him, even though I've moved across town. Just moved from Florida and being 7 month pregnant, we didnt have time to find our furbaby a vet. But then, our baby girl started to vomit and have diarrhea, we were frantically calling around to find a her a vet that could take her ASAP instead of going to the ER. We called the clinic at 8 AM when they just opened and got a 9 40 AM appointment. The staffs were friendly and efficient. They got the health info from our old vet in FL right away and update our forms for new patient. Our baby girl got treated with fluid and antibiotics. The staff called us the next day to check on our girl, which I happily informed that she got a whole lot better. The parking was very difficult since its newbury st so you should add that time to the appointment. They were on point with their schedule. Fee for a new patient is $70. You can create a online profile for your baby and an app. It has the records of vaccinations, appointment and test reminders, which I think rather neat. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. Come here if you don't mind paying roughly double what you would pay anywhere else. I love the doctors, I've met 2 of them & they were both kind and thorough. They truly examined the dogs, asked many questions and if I had any. They always explain any concerns they have. The front desk & vet techs are okay. Regarding the prices, the exam fee is high ($70) but I was willing to pay that for the area and the highly educated vets. I wasn't expecting to pay almost double on each vaccine! I've called around to almost 10 other clinics in Boston and found them so much cheaper. I think that's pretty shady & makes me wonder if they over charge on other meds too. It's too bad they're like this because now I'm wondering if all the other stuff they've had me buy was over charged and if it was completely necessary. Back Bay vet will do a fine job of caring for you pet, but they'll do an even better job of emptying your pocket book. If you're okay with spending over $900 to get your pet neutered, then by all means - check them out! I brought my Chihuahua in for a full exam. He was new to our family so I wanted all the tests run. Back Bay has no qualms about giving you all the bells and whistles - you're just going to pay out the nose for it. $140 bill later he was given a clean bill of health. A little while later when I went to order his heartworm medications from 1800petmed.com I was told that Back Bay refused to allow the meds to be given, saying that a heartworm test had never been performed. A lie. Of course, they wanted us to come back in for another exam. We were hounded by them through the phone and by email. Luckily by this point we had the sense to take our little guy elsewhere and had another vet redo all the tests. This place will try to swindle you out of every dollar. Way too expensive for what it is. Not much fancier/friendly/nicer/more exceptional/etc than a vet that charges REGULAR HUMAN prices. The 1 star rating is mostly because they took my cat in for "lab" (which was $550!!!!!) because he had a heart murmur. They had him back there for about 45 minutes. When they brought him back out he was already back in his crate and everything seemed fine. Alright, I will pay the $550 especially if it means that I am getting my cat the checkup that he needs. When I got home and let him out of his crate, he was SOAKED in what appeared to be alcohol? As if they needed to douse him in alcohol wipes before the labs? UMMM WHAT? I was in shock about how he looked. He was also not himself the rest of the night (running around like crazy, trying to dry off and lick all of the alcohol off of himself). Pretty upsetting For a vet that charges way above what other vets charge and for a vet that has a good rating, you would think they would at least WARN YOU that your cat would look absolutely ridiculous afterward and TELL YOU maybe why the needed to cover the cat in alcohol and not just the areas they took labs from? Also, the vet never called me back regarding questions I had about the visit. I will be finding a different vet for the next annual appointment. read more

I cannot say enough about how great the staff here are. My poor kitty Angel got an ear infection out of the blue and I had never seen a vet in the Boston area before. I was able to book a next day appointment for her and the staff members were so kind and attentive (they offer water, coffee). Once we got her diagnosis, the doctor explained everything to me and got me her medicine and we were good to go! For my follow up appointment, my poor baby still had the infection, though not as bad. When I returned for my third appointment to check in on her after her new medicine, Dr. Graham said that because I was so attentive to my cat's health, that the examination was free! When I first adopted my dog, Rufio, I brought him here because I'd always passed it while attending Simmons and shopping on Newbury, and had heard good things through word of mouth. Knowing it'd be expensive, I also knew that they'd probably do the best job. Since then, Rufio's had two annual checkups, where I had two different vets, but both were amazing. They were so calm and gentle with him, with realistic and real-life terminology that I could understand. I think I had Dr. Torres and Dr. Starr. The front desk staff is always helpful both in person and on the phone; the offices are very clean. It's VERY expensive, Rufio's having surgery tomorrow and it's over a grand... but I don't want to shop around for better prices when I know the quality here is so good. EDIT: Just picked up Rufio from surgery, and Dr. Torres was super nice and took her time answering all of my questions. So far, so good :) read more

i found this place because my cat had a health emergency and they could see him right away. Since it was an emergency I had to transport my cat in a cardboard carrier. For a cat, he is particularly stubborn and particularly determined. While driving, he managed to squeeze out of the handle hole (about 4 inches wide and two inches tall) and had escaped into my car. When I arrived I tried to coax him back into the carrier but he would not go. I had to call the office and ask for help. Two cardboard carriers and one METAL CRATE later, my cat was contained. The vet told me that he had a urinary blockage and explained my (very expensive) options to me. They gave me time when I needed to call my parents for advice and didn't judge me when I burst into tears fearing that I could not afford to save him. Instead they developed a custom, more affordable treatment option for me and were diligent in following up to insure my cat was ok. read more

I would give them 10 stars if it were possible. I have been a loyal customer for 3 years, but they won me over for life with our most recent interaction. There was a fire in my condo building around the corner. The Back Bay vet went above and beyond and sent out personnel to check on not only their patients, but all dogs in the building. Needless to say, they are a neighborhood staple who goes above and beyond for their neighbors. read more

I'm probably not going to write anything brand-spanking new in my review, but I did want to compliment one of the vets at Back Bay Vet Clinic. First off, the reason I gave this 4 out of 5 stars is because the prices really are very expensive. I just had my 7-month old Beagle/Min-Pin mix neutered, and had to take him to another clinic -- the price Back Bay Vet had quoted me was almost 3 times the price I ended up paying. That said, the service here is excellent, and worth the charge for routine checkups. Dr. Torres is extremely friendly and knowledgeable -- my pup just loves her. The vet techs are warm and loving, and take such good care of all of their patients. You can always tell how much the whole staff is truly passionate about animals. As another person said, just shop around for the more expensive procedures, like neuter/spays. read more

We just moved into the Back Bay neighborhood and a friend recommended BBVC so my boyfriend and I stopped by to check it out. The clinic is in a great location on Newbury street and they always have dog treats out front. When we dropped in, the receptionist was super friendly and answered all of our questions. Their facilities are extremely nice - not too cramped, which is amazing considering where they're at. We ended up going for an appointment sooner than expected when my dog, Oscar, got an ear infection. I have to say, this clinic is a GODSEND to all working dog moms because they have evening hours on Tues & Thurs in addition to 9a-3p Sat hours. We were greeted with cheerful smiles from everyone the night we went. The vet tech was very sweet with Oscar, who was cowering under our chair when she first walked into the room. And even though we were that night's last appointment, Dr. Jou took time not only to check out Oscar's ear but to answer all of my other health concerns about him. She was upfront about treatment options and costs and left the elective choices up to me. Our total for the sick visit wasn't overly pricey when you discount the HeartGuard, shampoo, and joint supplement we picked up while we were there. I cringed a little when I saw that the ear smear was nearly $50 because, as someone in the medical field, I know that all they do is rub a gunky q-tip on a slide and take a look under the microscope. Still, given the utter convenience and pleasant experience at BBVC, we will definitely be longterm clientele. Highly recommended! read more

Love love love this place. As an extremely overprotective mother of two kitties, Back Bay Vet has never failed me. I just took them yesterday for a sick visit and woke up to a voicemail asking how they were doing today.... Who does that!!!! So impressed. I treat my cats like family and so do they. In a nutshell that's why I love them! I have had appointments with three vets- Drs. Levine , Jou, and Torres. Every time I ended up with a new dr I thought "this vet can't possibly be as good as the last one I saw" and every time I leave amazed. I loved ALL three of these vets. You really can't go wrong regardless of who you get. The whole staff actually, front desk, technicians etc are unbelievably friendly and accommodating. The way they speak to and treat my kitties shows me that they truly love animals and love their jobs. FYI- this place is crazy expensive!!!!! It's definitely too expensive for my 23 year old bank account... But I love them so much I can't go anywhere else. You get what you pay for I guess! This place has my business for life. read more
