We were craving an apple fritter and decided to have some delivered, along with a few other pastries. While the apple fritter is the best we've ever had, the others left much to be desired. The menu showed a maple frosted & filled long john. We received a white frosted long john "filled" with what tasted like more frosting and maybe 2 teaspoons of it at the very end of the long john. This morning I was excited to have a jelly filled Bismarck. Again, there was maybe a teaspoon of white frosting inside, noticeably less than the long john.. No red jelly anywhere! I wanted the plain sugared Bismarck, but got a messy powdered sugar kind instead. Just very disappointed. Felt as though a local fuel station would offer better quality. read more

I had to get donuts for about 50 people. Not an easy task for most places! I called the night before and let them know I would be coming and they had everything packaged and ready to go for me at 6:30 in the morning! The owner even offered to help me carry it out, which was awesome for him to do because he was the only one in there working (out front anyway.) I could tell by the other customers reactions that they didn't mind, that they were familiar with this place and probably expected him to offer. The donuts themselves are my favorite in town. To me, they are the best flavor and consistency of anyone around. My whole family loves Donut Hut! And for good reason! They have the best donuts in town and a variety great enough to delight everyone in the group. I used to work for a company that would often have client visits from New York or San Francisco, and management would usually bring in donuts for everyone. At least one of those clients liked these donuts so much, they insisted on having them when they came to visit. The service is top notch. They always greet us like old friends, and my son loves it when he gets an extra donut hole. The ambiance is good-very much like a neighborhood coffee stop. This is a mom & pop type shop-- not a crazy overpriced place with 5lb pound donuts. They had all the classics, filled, long johns, old-fashioned, etc. Basically everything but the French crueler. I had the raspberry filled and maple old fashioned. Both I though were great, not dry at all. Loved the maple frosting. Just wished the raspberry was a jam as opposed to a jelly but that's personal. Donut Hut is one of those landmark spots in Des Moines.. If you want 1, or a dozen they will melt in your mouth and make you as smiley as the mural on the outside of the building! 25 people can fit snuggly in the building at a time and the line moves fast so no worries if it's out the door! Let me first say I have looked for an Apple Fritter that is the best in this area and The Donut Hut on Douglas Ave in Des Moines has by Far THE VERY BEST APPLE FRITTER in this and the surrounding area. They are very generous in size and packed with awesome flavor. They are sweet and crispy when you take a bite. These Fritters are made so they easily pull apart to give you bite size pieces chock full of flavor. Five them 15 seconds in the microwave for a warm treat that makes them pop! You can also take some home, put them in the freezer individually wrapped, take them out of the freezer to thaw give them 15 seconds in the microwave and they are still packed with flavor and crunch. What a great find! I stopped by here with a big group, and the owners welcomed us with smiles and overwhelming enthusiasm. The donuts are primarily cake donuts (not my fave), which my husband raved about. However, they do have a few fried options, especially their filled donuts, which are easily the best I've ever had. The prices are reasonable, the owners are sweet, and the donuts themselves are phenomenal, which probably account for the incredibly busy environment we witnessed when we stopped by on a Sunday morning.
