Nut allergy warning: The kung Pao chicken, Dan Dan noodles, and perhaps some other dishes have peanuts, but we were fine with what we ordered. We had no issues getting a table for 6 at around 8:30PM on a Saturday evening. Food came out extremely quickly (less than 10 minutes for almost everything). However, our lotus root order was seemingly forgotten and that took longer, almost 30 minutes. For six people, we ordered: 2x Spicy Chicken (Fried): Two orders because our first vanished so quickly. The chicken is nicely crispy, surprisingly more airy than other Szechuan places I've had. The onion soaks up some peppercorn flavor too. Twice Cooked Pork (4/5): I thought the pork was a little tough on some pieces, but it was overall very good! Mapo Tofu (4.5/5): Excellent portions, great flavor Beef Slices in Golden Hot Bowl (4.5/5): Love the amount of vegetables it came with, very well balanced and goes great with rice. Was in Houston for about 48 hours and asked a local somewhere to get a good meal before leaving and this was at the top of the list. They recommended the duck which I didn't try but it comes highly recommended from another foodie. I had my grandson as we were matching Christmas bottoms. The place was packed with people and families coming and going. While waiting for my food to go, I observed the various customers and the food they ordered. I mean the noodles, green beans, and orange chicken looked fantastic. I noticed on the wall that they had been featured in the newspaper. I was serviced immediately by the owner I believe as he was hands on and active in serving. He played with my grandson while we waited and personally delivered our food when it was time to go. Our food was ready in under 25 minutes and packaged to go. The ambiance is very quaint and I noticed a bar. It was very clean and ample parking. I cannot stand a place that had no parking!!! I plan on retuning and I will be eating there next time! I found myself at Hu's Cooking for dinner with several friends. Since we were looking to get together and I did not know the area at all, I left it to my friend Brian T. to do the planning. He had good things to say about Hu's, and since they were able to accommodate our party of 9 and sit us at a round table to maximal conversation, we made our way over. When I arrived the restaurant was bustling - it's not the largest space and it almost rectangular in shape, but there is a decent amount of space for multiple tables. Decor is minimal, but the light color scheme makes the space look very open. The menu contains mostly Szechuan dishes, served family style. Note that the restaurant is BYOB. We decided to order several dishes to share: mushrooms, lamb, tofu, beef with bao buns, green beans, chicken bites, fish bites, and beef noodles. Everything was really tasty - I especially liked the green beans, beef noodles, and the chicken bites, though honestly everything was seasoned well and had great flavor. Food also came out promptly, we decided to order a few more plates midway and there were no problems accommodating that. Service was great, we were take care of promptly and all of the food came out at a good pace. Overall, I had a great time at Hu's Cooking; the food and service were great, and it was wonderful getting together with friends. I'm surprised that I haven't put in the praise I always have for this place previously. Ever since they opened, I have made this my go-to spot whenever I'm in town, or on campus and have a craving. Yes, parking is absolutely atrocious. They have about five spots out front, in the back lot. Looks like at least six bombs have gone off. The spaces are not well marked, and aren't necessarily even sized either. The potholes, and dip on the exit aren't kind to any car that uses tires. There's neighborhood street parking if you're comfortable doing that.. Most people with the nicer cars will park there and it tends to be pretty full quickly so plan accordingly.. If you can find parking, you're in for a treat. Over the years, I have never had to wait for a seat yet. They are always busy, but not so busy that I can't get a spot to eat. The staff has always been super friendly, and the service has always been very efficient. The food has never come out cold, or inaccurate. They are good solo, or in groups. They have a drink menu, but you can BYOB, Total Wine is one light up the road if you want to bring your favorite, or try some strange drank. Get the roundtable with the Lazy Susan. Serving made easy. My favorites here are the Mapo Tofu, Spicy Chicken (Fried) and Spicy Fish Bites (Fried). I have tried 3/4 of the menu, and enjoyed all of it. Check the pics out. The Med Center proper has only few places scattered about, and the majority is eh. This gem is worth driving in for. Give it a taste. You won't be disappointed. read more

Hu's is an authentic Chinese spot in a prime location in the medical center that I've had my eye on. After a late-night baseball game, we found ourselves looking for places that were still open and thought, why not finally make the drive to Hu's? Since they were close to closing when we arrived, we quickly decided on our order, but it took a while for anyone to come to our table, so I guess they weren't in too much of a rush. When our waitress did come, she was super sweet and helped with all of our questions. We ordered the sweet-skinned duck, the squid hot pot, and the house combination fried rice. The duck was perfect--the skin was sweet and crisp, and the meat was juicy. The skin stuck to my teeth, but I didn't mind because it tasted amazing. The squid hot pot had a strong peppercorn flavor, which was a bit too intense, but I really enjoyed the vegetables. We all thought the cucumbers were delicious, spring rolls were average and hot/sour soup was pretty good. We asked if the Thai curry shrimp could be made mild instead of spicy. At first the answer was no. Then the waitress mentioned she would have the kitchen to make is less spicy. The Thai curry shrimp arrived with a very bland watery sauce. Located very close to the Rice campus near the Medical Center Area in Houston Texas, Hu's Cooking serves the classic American Chinese dishes very well, but also has some very specific dishes I've not seen elsewhere (though didn't order them). It's a good indication that this is THE spot for locals who trust the chef here, and want him/her to recreate dishes that they crave from back home. We came here on a Monday night, after a long day of traveling. Our nephew who we were visiting, knows that we like trying different Chinese restaurants, so he suggested we take a bus from our hotel to Hu's. A bit surprising since I knew he is not a fan of Chinese cuisine, but was appreciative of his generosity in thinking of what we would like. He had been here once with his friends, and stated that all of them seemed to really like it. The outside doesn't look like much, located in a aging strip mall with a little parking. But the inside is nicely remodeled, and we were shown to a corner table. The menu is two sided and laminated.with both english and chinese markings. Water was brought, and a pail of cooked white rice was given, making the assumption that we would eat rice with whatever dish we ordered. I've become accustomed to rice always being charged separately, so this was a pleasant learning. We ordered three things, all excellent" -- Pork fried rice with kimchi ($14.50) - this is the one dish that my nephew would eat here. He couldn't finish it, so I helped him, and it was very, very good. The old kimchi was the perfect amount of sourness, there were nice slices of pork loin (pork just goes so well with kimchi), and the old rice was fried just right. It's a really well executed dish that probably didn't take the chef very long, but really tasted like it did. -- Twice cooked pork ($17) - boiled pork belly, sliced and wok cooked with black bean, leeks, white onions, and chili bean oil/sauce. A dish well executed, with plenty of protein. It did give the two of us a bit of a stomach problem later because of the oiliness of the sauce and meat itself, but that's on us. -- Mongolian beef ($17.50) - this was the safety dish, in case the pork wasn't liked. I really liked this dish too, where the beef wasn't so gummy, but instead was closer to crispy, the way it is supposed to be. The wok fired taste was there. Could have even been more crispy for my taste. The dining room got pretty full by the time we were about to leave, and it was a lively crowd. The service was good, keeping our water full (we had plenty of white rice). And it's clear that the chef is an expert at wok cooking...so many more dishes on the menu where that skill would elevate the dish so much. Tonight we brought good friends to Hu's for dinner. They are new to Houston so we were thrilled to share our favorite restaurant with them. We ordered A LOT of food for only five of us-- spicy fish bites, green onion pancake, and Dan Dan noodles were our appetizers. The entrees came out in quick succession for us to share-- salt and pepper shrimp, ginger fish, black pepper beef cube, three cups chicken, and a lamb dish. Every bite was awesome! Our friends, people who have been all over the world, said it was the best Chinese food they'd ever eaten. They took home two bags of leftovers. I'm so happy they loved it like I do! This time around we got the crispy fish bites (9.5/10), the spicy chicken (9/10), the shrimp and spare rib dry pot (10/10) and the green beans (9/10). The dry pot is definitely the standout dish and always my pick when we go. I love how savory and spicy the dry pot is making it perfect to pair with rice. I came on a Saturday afternoon. We had about a 15 minute wait for a table for 2. I could tell this place is more authentic Chinese than American simply by how many Chinese patrons there were and I loved that. I decided to try something new and got a lamb dish. I don't like the numbing sensation of Szechuan peppers but do like my food spicy so I skipped the peppercorn but asked for regular spice. They used chili oil instead so it came out very oil and still not spicy. It was a huge portion and otherwise tasty. They give each table a complimentary bowl of white rice that I ate it with. The waiter and owner were very adamant to get it right for me with the spice and I appreciated that. My dad had the trio lo mein and enjoyed it. Service was great and prices are reasonable. Wait time was shorter in the afternoon than in the evening. I came on a Saturday afternoon and I didn't have to wait. Tuesday evening, there was about 20-30mins. The staff were pretty quick and helped me out when there was a dish I didn't like too much. It can get pretty difficult to move around so it's hard for bulky things like wheelchairs, walkers or strollers. The cooks who make the dishes are different in the morning and evening. Some of the food that I ordered during the afternoon tasted off like the beef in the Mongolian beef and the pork in the shu mai. Came by for lunch and tried their lunch specials. I was very impressed by the quality of the dishes they were serving. I ordered the beef and jalapeno and my girlfriend got the spicy chicken. First time a few days ago been hearing about this place so I was anxious to order My husband had pulled pork with fried rice I think and I has Shrimp Fried Rice. I have had some of this Rice all over Houston and it was always the best I've ever had, however this Rice was not the Rice I was expecting. I wish I had the shrimp because they were great with flavor but it felt like they didn't belong with the Rice maybe noodles would have been however we will never know due to im ever going back. We decided to go here for lunch the other day, and we ordered Jasmine tea, Scallion Pancake, Hot & Sour Soup, BBQ pork buns, and the Pork & Shrimp Shumai. Either way, when I first tasted the Hot & Sour Soup, I was like, "Money"! These guys truly know how to make that type of soup. I kind of equate it to a fried chicken restaurant--if they have good coleslaw, then the chicken will be great. As for Hot & Sour Soup, if it's delicious, everything at the restaurant will be as well. It's simply the care and attention to detail in the soup that shows you Hu's Cooking is simply wonderful. Overall, everything was simply amazing. This restaurant should have multiple locations in the Houston area. I'm waiting for them to come to the Kingwood area. Once again, you can't go wrong eating Chinese food at Hu's Cooking.
