Stopped in for lunch. Was not impressed. Thousand Layer pancake, $5: came out smaller than expected and was undercooked and quite greasy. Lunch Kung Pao Chicken, $13.5: This was a large lunch portion. The hot and sour soup was good not great. Kung Pao chicken was covered in a very sweet sauce that was not spicy at all, very let down with overall taste. I did not finish the portion. Fried rice had a odd flavor, like old oil. Fried spring rolls, very hot and crispy outside, and just straight mush inside. Bok Choy was a large portion and nicely cooked, it was the best item that we had here. Lunch Sautéed spicy Fried chicken Cubes, $13.50: There was a good portion of crispy fried chicken. It was not spicy. all in all good not great. The rest of the items were exactly the same quality and taste as the Kung Pao lunch dish. I was very excited and drove into town specifically to eat lunch here, but honestly it was not worth the time. Could have been an off day or something. Decided to grab dinner at Hu's on Friday evening, there was about a 30 minute wait because the place is clearly popular for good reason. The hostess, the server & all the staff we encountered were really nice. We loved everything we ordered, not pictured is the scallion pancake which is a 10/10 & I highly recommend and the pork ribs we inhaled quickly upon arrival. Hu's Cooking is one of my go-to places when I want authentic Chinese food without having to drive to Houston Chinatown. My friends & I love doing family style here since there are so many amazing dishes to share. My personal favorite is the spicy chicken. It does have numbing qualities but even my friends with low spice tolerances will deal with it just because of how delicious it is especially when paired with the green beans and white rice. The green beans have great garlic and wok flavors that are a must have as well. The Mongolian beef, twice cooked pork (not pictured), and the house combination fried noodles also have amazing flavors that I would recommend trying if there are no dietary restrictions. The service is amazing and we usually get seated fairly quickly even at peak dining times. The place is fairly spacious that can accommodate various party sizes but larger party sizes will have to wait longer if the bigger tables are taken. The only downside is parking can be difficult to find. They have parking in the front but also there is a lot in the back of the restaurant. Just be cautious to only park where it is allowed for Hu's Cooking or your car can get towed. Worse case scenario, there is some street parking available where you can walk over to the establishment as well but I would definitely suggest carpooling. read more

The stir fried bok choy has a buttery garlic sauce and is delicious. The Mongolian beef is tender and flavorful, but has a high ratio of onions. Lunch and weekends they have a few popular dim sum like har gau, siu mai, pork buns and sesame balls. Service is efficient and on point. The food comes out quickly. Hu's Cooking is another Szechuan restaurant that popped up in the Houston dining scene during the great era of Sichuan everything around town of the late 2010s. I have been coming to Hu's Cooking since I worked in the medical center. One of my first times was for lunch with a coworker and we kinda went all out for lunch. Since then I have been very faithful to the same dishes repeatedly. My favorites in no particular order are: dan dan noodles, sesame chicken, combination noodles, orange beef, mapo tofu, and literally any of their vegetable dishes. But my absolute favorite dish is the spicy fish bites. The bites truly are spicy but they are also equally crispy. Slightly saltier than what you would expect them to be but they are so good. Normally I would not recommend something that is this salty but the salty and spicy combo with the crispy and flaky fish on the inside is such a nice textural and flavor variation that your mouth is begging for more. I also do enjoy their eggplants in garlic sauce (no meat) dish. It is very garlicky as the name suggests. The eggplant is cooked to a soft almost near mushy consistency without being mushy. I suppose it is very malleable with a fork consistency if we are being very specific. Price is what you would expect for food to be whether you are now inside or outside the loop. Service is quick, efficient, and friendly. Parking is a little limited so do ride together or use a ride share service if possible. It is equally good if you can get it delivered. Not sure if they are on UberEats but I have gotten it from Favor in the past. read more

Parking is a bit of a mess in the front but highly recommend parking in the back as they have a larger gravel lot for when the front gets full. Upon entry, you are immediately greeted by staff and pointed towards your table. I ordered the Spicy Chicken, Dan Dan Noodles, Mapu Tofu, and Stir Fried Green Beans. One thing that stood out to me was the flavor of each of the dishes. Each plate was very well seasoned with the perfect spice level that I could tolerate. My personal favorite was the spicy chicken. The crunch, spice, and onions all pair together well and brings out the flavor of each component. This place is a foodie magnet; prepare for angst if you're backing out onto Holcombe from parking in front. Tried the Orange chicken, but astonished that such a simple dish could go so wrong. The chicken and the sauce were way overcooked--almost bitterly so. The fried pork dumplings were good, but the noodle exterior slipped right off when cutting into a bite size. Also, one piece of gristle was a bit unappetizing. Waitstaff complied with all requests, although their pace was frenetic. The welcome greeting and farewell were nicely done. We thought the orange chicken debacle must be a fluke, given the popularity of the place, so we returned the next day. Everything was much better--even perfect, I think, so we were right. Yummy! We were looking for a place to eat after visiting the park and we ended up at Hu's Cooking. There are a few parking spots in the front with a small lot in the back. Walking in, we were greeted right away. The hostess and waiters and waitresses were very nice and really helpful with our menu questions. For our table of 6, we ordered five dishes. This ended up being plenty as the portions are generous and we had leftovers. Dan dan noodles: this was the smallest portion, definitely good to pair with another dish. With a hint of peanut flavor and just the right amount of peppercorn, this was a winner. Stir fried eggplants: fantastic! For me, eggplants can tend to taste oily if not prepared well. This was not thr case here. Smothered in a sweet and savory sauce, this goes perfectly with rice. This plate was emptied. House combination fried noodles: juicy chicken, al dente noodles, soft cabbage, and tons of garlic. The only downside of this dish was the slightly dry beef. Braised beef with noodles: spicy! Noodles were cooked well and the beef tendons absorbed so much flavor. The meat could have been more tender but the flavor was great. Spicy pot with everything: not sure what this one was called. Came to Hu's cooking on a weekday after work with some friends! We did family style, and I took some pictures but after started eating since we were so hungry haha but this place was SO YUMMY!! The eggplants in garlic sauce was exactly what I wanted with this dish! It was so savory and flavorful! The mongolian beef was also delicious and savory and the meat was cooked well and not tough at all. The spicy fish bites were super crispy and not too spicy either (if you avoid the chili peppers like I did haha). Lastly, the house combination fried noodles were SO GOOD!! A lot of garlic taste and good variety of meats in the combination! I think I would pass out in a food coma if I ate all of the noodles in a sitting haha but it is so tasty!!! All in all, this is a great place to get some asian food near the med center! The flavors taste very authentic and is a great place for family style!! Very hole in the wall Asian place, nothing fancy. Ordered the Thai curry shrimp, orange chicken, and vegetable fried rice not knowing how big the portions were and we were not disappointed. The curry was LOADED with shrimp!! It was amazing. The orange chicken wasn't overly sweet like normal chain restaurant orange chicken. The vegetable fried rice was just okay. Nothing extreme. The service was where I drop a star. The waitress/waiter wasn't too attentive. They brought us the check at the end without asking about dessert. I decided to go with my friends on a late evening around 10 pm as they are one of the few places open late that is not fast food. We decided to try the Dan Dan noodles, general chicken, Mongolian beef, and garlic ribs with onions. I definitely think this restaurant can be considered family style as the servings are huge! I appreciated that everything tasted great and felt light to eat compared to other restaurants that serve food that is very dense and heavy. My personal favorite was the Mongolian beef in which the meat was tender and had a good balance of vegetables! Even the rice was perfectly cooked and not dried out. The service was excellent as the waiter had a very positive attitude, even at the end of the day! She consistently made sure our table was good and our waters were refilled. Overall I would definitely make a trip back to Hu's. The restaurant felt clean and overall there was a nice atmosphere. Note: Parking is TIGHT. The to-go orders are packaged well. Our favorites and must haves are the Kung Pao chicken and eggplants in garlic sauce and spicy chicken. However, during our most recent visit, the Spicy chicken had more onions than chicken cubes, came out less crispy and had less flavors than before. Hopefully it's just a one time flop. By all accounts, Hu's is doing everything right. They've become one of the city's most well reviewed and popular Chinese restaurants, which is nothing less than impressive after only debuting a short 4 years ago. As the explosion of Sichuan cuisine continues to permeate the Chinese dining scene, they're certainly among those leading the charge. As this side of Holcombe continues to gain traction amongst the Chinese community, Hu's has its hands full with a number of similar restaurants competing in the same vicinity. Even though the parking is narrow and tough, they still continue to have heaps of people night in and out. The food is definitely on the pricier side, as most entrees are hovering just below or over the $20 mark, but the good news is that most everything is authentic and relatively good. I think some of their dishes are a tad sweeter than I'm used to, but it's an ideal place for family style food and an even more ideal destination for folks who don't feel like heading to Bellaire Chinatown. Their eggplant with pork (魚香茄子) is sweet but good and the cumin lamb (自然羊肉) definitely packs some heat. The classic spicy chicken (宮保雞丁) is not for the faint of heart, dan dan noodles (擔擔麵) is a good addition to any meal. Their mala dry pot is definitely numbing and the mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) is well executed. Stick with Sichuan dishes and all should be good. Their shaomai and other dim sum like options are laughable, but it's mainly tailored for the gringo crowd. Their tea duck is solid, but a little overrated. The fried noodles (炒麵) are just so-so at best. If seafood is an absolute must, I would only recommend the fried cumin fish filets (自然魚片) or their poached fish in oil (水煮魚). If not pork, then certainly go with anything lamb. The interior hs a modern feel and there's plenty of staff to help whenever things get busy. They recently started serving food till 11pm on the weekends, which puts them closer to a late night food destination. They have a dedicated takeout window and accept credit cards. read more
