Great place for Southern breakfast! The past reviews were helpful in trying this gem that recently opened in my neighborhood. I can eat so the hearty portions really left me satisfied. I ordered the fish and grits, my first time in combination, but I have learned is a staple. My company went more basic with scrambled eggs and cheesy grits. It was all stick to your ribs DELICIOUS. The decor is open and simple cafeteria style and the service is with a smile. I was there during a week day but I imagine with food this good, there must be a bit of a wait on the weekend. This cafe was a delight! I grew up in this area but rarely get a chance to visit. I got the opportunity this week. I remember this suite. It used to be an Asian restaurant. A lot has changed. The dining room is spacious yet welcoming. You seat yourself so we did. Immediately, we were greeted with the warmest server. She was smiling from ear to ear. She didn't know us but already bit felt like family. I didn't want anything heavy so I got an egg white biscuit with a side of hashbrowns. The place was semi-packed. They have taken the stance of a brunch diner that closes at 3pm. Clearly they have created quite the fan base. Every person that walked in happily greeted the staff as if they were old friends. My plate came and it was beautiful. Honestly, this was the best biscuit I've had in some time. It was fresh and not from a freezer. It was as light and as fluffy as a cloud in the sky! How did they do it? The egg whites were cooked to perfection and the hashbrowns were grand. They had an oldies playlist laced with all the favorites: The OJays, the Jackson 5 even some Cher! Okay so this place was amazing! It doesn't look like that much, but we were all pleasantly surprised with the taste of our meals! Our table ordered an omelette with bacon, fish & grits, salmon & grits, chicken & waffles, and the pancake breakfast. The only negative out of all 5 meals was that the chicken with the waffle was dry. Wonderfully seasoned, but tough and dry which was unfortunate because I could imagine it would have been amazing as well. There was a nice amount of food for the prices to be so low. The chicken breast is small in comparison to the waffle, but I didn't have issues with that because I don't like huge pieces of chicken breast anyway. They have good food and quick service for a local joint. I placed a to-go order for the chicken biscuit, the buttermilk breakfast w/ a pecan waffle, a ham and cheese omelet and a side of bacon. You can't go wrong with (buttermilk breakfast) grits, eggs and bacon. My favorite item was the chicken biscuit. It was delicious! The biscuit was fluffy and the chicken held its crunch. The pecan waffle was okay. I'll have to try it again when I dine-in. I'll definitively make a visit when I'm too lazy to cook my own breakfast. read more

This is going to be a 2 part review for food and service. This was my first time visiting Huskers Cafe. I've always seen a lot of people come in and out, as well as a full restaurant, so from that I wanted to try them out. Location: this is the only location Huskers have (I believe) and it is not too far from me, so that's a plus. There's plenty of parking, so that's good as well. Atmosphere: From the outside the restaurant looks much bigger than it really is, but it's still a decent size. If you have a big party of 6+ then it may be a small issue. I'm sure they would put tables together, but the restaurant is a little "cozy" inside. Here comes the food and service... Service: when we walked in, someone from the open kitchen greeted us right away! A gentleman who was gleaning the tables directed us to an open seat. We were then greeted by a nice waitress who gave us some suggestions on the menu. Our dunk order came out fast, but it took her 15 minutes to come back and take our food order. She took someone else's food order who came in after us before she made it back to us. Our food came with 15-20 minutes after the order was taken. Our server was really sweet, but she didn't check on us. My husband had to get up and ask for butter from the kitchen, then had to get up again to request more water. Now, here's my review of my husband's and my food... Food: So I would say the food was ok. I've definitely had much better, but it was decent. I ordered the Buttermilk Breakfast and he ordered the Chicken and Waffles. So my food was good...just good. The temp of my food was lukewarm, not hot. I didn't feel Like sending it back bc I would have had to wait so long. My husband's waffle tasted like the waffles you make at a hotel breakfast bar. Nothing special at all. It was not the greatest waffle! The chicken breast he received was really small. I thought it was a thigh. It was the smallest Brest I've ever seen! The grits were not good...mine was clumpy and tasted like instant grits. I didn't eat them. Overall..mediocre. Not sure if I will return. Maybe we tried the wrong menu items. Not sure how we've missed this place for the past couple of years. It's in the plaza with Hobby Lobby next to the NCG movie theater. We went on a Saturday morning around 10am and surprisingly there was no wait. We did get one of the last open tables though. And tables and chairs are about all you will find in the sparse interior. The service was great and the staff very friendly. The waitress even offered to let me try the different type of grits (yellow & cream). The wait time for our order was probably a little longer than your typical breakfast place like Waffle House or IHOP but not bad. We had the chicken and waffle/$7.95 and two egg breakfast/$3.65 that comes with grits and Texas toast which we subbed for a biscuit, pork and turkey sausages. The food was good especially the grits; which I guess is to be expected with a name like Huskers. And warm syrup is always a nice touch. The biscuit and fried chicken were probably my least favorite. But definitely worth a return visit to try other menu items. read more

I have no idea how the food is. We arrived gave our name for a party of six and waited. Mean while they seat couples at tables for 4 and 6. When tables for 2 open they sit empty. But that's not what made us leave. While we waited a group of 6 college kids walked in and the hostess sat them at the first table for 6 right in front of us. I ordered shrimp and cheese grits. The girl asked me if I wanted to add any toppings. I got confused because shouldn't it come already with toppings like other restaurants have it? Anyway I ordered jalapeño mushrooms and tomatoes. Husband ordered 2 eggs breakfast and a biscuit with gravy. We both thought the food was good. Because I've had better, it's hard to give it anything above average. Side note: I figured this place out. It really should be a create your own grits bowl. Place isn't in the best shape in appearance, has a hole in the wall feel. Kitchen area looked a mess but whatever. It wasn't crowded AT ALL & they had us waiting 24 min to even place an order while another waitress was talking to the table in front of us about some nails, I told my husband we were leaving. There is ample parking as the establishment shares a veg large parking lot with other businesses in the plaza. The place is very easy to find. Upon entering, you have a clear view of the space. You can choose a table to sit at and a server will greet you. They have pretty good customer service with a very nice, warm southern hospitality feel. I loved it! Our server was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu, answering all our questions. After much debate, we all ended up getting the shrimp and grits and honestly, it was SO GOOD!
