I visited the arena to attend a graduation ceremony. The arena had ample seating in the bleachers, with accessible seating on the arena behind the graduates. It would have been great to know that concessions were open in advance, so hopefully you're reading this before your next visit. We had children and a toddler in attendance, who would have appreciated knowing the concession was open in advance. Some great things to highlight about the space: - Many bathrooms to choose from - We appreciated having the ability to walk around the arena using the upmost bleacher. So glad that they renovated Kemper. The space is being used for a multitude of things. There are a plethora of courts for basketball, volleyball and even pickle ball lines. There are many restaurants on the second floor, I haven't tried them, they seem a bit overpriced. Businesses line the outer circle throughout the facility on all floors. If I'm not mistaken, I believe I saw an arcade. I've enjoyed playing volleyball on the courts for the past couple years. They keep the place pretty clean. One of my only disappointments is that they do not consider parking when booking multiple events. It can be a headache looking for parking sometime. The other is staff not knowing where things are. I was there for a meeting and was given the wrong instructions to an office a few times. The place is not small and I ended up walking a little bit over a mile around the place looking for the meeting (yes, I turned my watch on). read more

This facility can seat so many and it's really multi functional. We were visiting for a weekend basketball tournament and I was told the building sat vacant for awhile until they turned it into a sports complex. They even have sports therapists on site! The food inside is pretty high so I tried to eat prior to arrival and after leaving. The transformation from Kemper Arena to the Hyvee Arena is nothing short of miraculous. What was once a 16,000 seat abandoned arena is now a multi-level sports and rec facility. As I walked onto the main concourse, I had a bit of confusing time looking out onto the main arena. The view is now split because of an arena sized flooring level they have installed separating a once huge space into 2 levels of hardwood courts. There were multiple basketball games occurring as I wandered around reminiscing about where I sat for a multitude of concerts during the 1980's. There are also restaurants (Blind Box and Longboards) under construction as with snack bars, vending machines, an arcade, business offices and a cool looking alcohol bar. I probably won't be attending events at Hy-Vee Arena as much as Kemper Arena since I don't participate in team sports nor have children that I will be taking, although it does provide an indoor climate for getting your steps in and food and drink options for the area. I want to love the Hy-Vee Arena because it is a very unique and historical complex but the organization and some staff members that I have encountered leaves a lot to be desired! I am not a Kansas City native so I did not visit the Kemper Arena back in its glory days. I am glad that a developer came by to save the complex and reconfigured it into a multi-sport complex. In my opinion, The redevelopment has some nice new things and left some things untouched which is unfortunate. Let's start off with the positives: - Beautiful new multi-level floors with a ton of space for indoor basketball, volleyball, and pickleball. - A Longboards location - Updated restaurant areas (although some are empty) - An indoor track! - A dedicated fitness center (weights, cardio equipment) - Membership options (~$30/month with access to all of the above - food/drink obviously a separate cost) - Open-play options (currently $6 to access any of the indoor basketball, volleyball, pickleball areas, and I believe the indoor track as well) Major negatives for me are below and brings my rating of the Hy-Vee arena down drastically: - Check-in staff is a hit or miss for me. Usually the day staff members seem to be courtesy and know what they're doing. However I find, more often than not, that the staff members would rather be talking to each other than trying to check people in or help you with issues you may be having. - The check-in process has been a painful experience, even for members! It seems to be constantly changing and I believe I have had to sign the same waiver every month because they "switch" to different systems. When there is a large group of people coming in to check in and pay + sign waivers, it can take over 15 minutes just to go in and get your workout in. I think they need a dedicated members ONLY check-in line. - The dining options are sparse, especially after 8:30pm. The only options after 8:30pm are vending machines, a soft-serve ice cream machine and possibly the coffee/juice smoothie shop. - The fitness center lacks options which is a shame for such a large sports complex. There needs to be more cardio equipment and much more core/weight options. Paying $30/month to use the fitness center is not worth the money as other fitness locations are much better - Ever changing open play times and staff not knowing what is actually open. Events here take precedence and you are at the mercy of any events or court bookings. - Parking lot: the main parking lot across the main entrance of Hy-Vee Arena (dubbed Lot B) can be booked and you have limited parking options if you are not a staff or member. - Restrooms are abhorrent and need refurbishment. I think they need to remove some restrooms and stick to a few per floor so they can maintain them as there are times when sinks do not work, toilets don't flush, and soap is not refilled. This is definitely one area where it seems the developer left untouched... I really hope they work on the Hy-Vee arena and make it a truly beautiful sports complex because it definitely has the potential to be one. I just think they need the proper management and staff training to make the experience a great one. Pro-Tip: CALL before you come and check if your desired open play is available. read more

As being a member of Hy-vee arena, I would like to address some of the negatives, from personal experience, as to why it is not worth coming here. To start off, I am one of the many athletes that comes to the sports-complex to exercise or even participate in a pick-up basketball game. Unfortunately, as you walk in, the staff in the front desk are immature and careless, having attitudes and would rather continue talking to co-workers than to give a danm about members and their needs--might I mention that they also don't follow COVID-19 protocols, having their mask on but under their chin and do not regularly check temperatures of members as they walk in, not to mention the time the manager was caught smoking weed on the track with staff members. To add on, they are so unorganized with their schedule. One week they have an unexpected event that is not even scheduled and when you go up to the front desk to check-in they say, "no open gym" forcing you to go back home and waste your time. Again, the staff continues to be careless, sitting and talking not handling members needs, always unorganized by prioritizing money over the returning members of the sports-complex. Hyvee-Arena staff and organization are hypocrites not leaving satisfactory service to the members and it's damaging it's public reputation. read more

Staff is normally very nice. We come here for basketball practice few times a week. Facilities such as the courts and flooring are nice. MOST of the time the bathrooms are clean and the seating area is always clean when we go. I cannot speak to anyone with workout memberships. Restaurants are never open in the evening unless there is a tournament or concert. read more

Unfortunately the venue booked three events and had no parking, no seating, two vendors for THOUSANDS of people and dirty bathrooms. They shut off all drink vending machines so athletes had nothing to drink or eat as we were told we couldn't bring outside food and beverages. The temperature was well over 80 degrees, muggy and uncomfortable. The facility is beautiful and new but not managed well. I wouldn't recommend having any tournaments or large event here. read more

Came to Boulevardia tonight. Things were going great until the lightening and thunder let everyone know the storm was close by. It took the professional, level head of their on site manager, Beth (I was told that was her name) to get her staff together to prepare the arena for the very large crowd to enter. Everyone entered orderly and proceeded to grab something to eat and of course drink. As my friends and I walked around we saw Beth and her staff being helpful and pleasant as were the people at Long Boards, the Bottom's Up Bar, Smoothie Shop, Power Play Pizza and the Wknd shirt vendor and other places( sorry can't remember all the names) as well, who found themselves very quickly over-run with hungry, thirsty people. The Boulevardia staff was also amazing and helpful! Beth and her red-shirted team along with the security guards were visible which was very calming when you are in such a huge crowd, especially when the lights went out though only for a moment! I've been to many events like this and none so prepared to handle so many people like this one in a downpour and that takes a good manager and crew who doesn't panic but uses common sense to get the ball rolling quickly and effectively to help the patrons. Kudos to tonight's management, Hy-Vee team including security, Boulevardia staff and for the patience of the food vendors with very long lines. What I saw tonight was "teamwork and professionalism" at its best! By the way, they all deserve a raise! read more

Following the building's policy, we turned in 4 driver's license at check-in to rent equipment for 4 players. Upon checkout the guard's desk only had 3 IDs in their possession. My ID was nowhere to be found. I have been in contact with the General Manager, Julie Rischer, who would rather send blanket responses shifting blame to me versus attempting to gain a resolution on what happened to my driver's license. "Did you check with your friends to make sure they didn't get it? Your ID was never checked into the desk." Those two statements alone contradict one another. Either the arena had my ID and gave it to someone else in error or they never had it? I will not be supporting a place that clearly does not take pride in keeping their visitors' valuables safe. read more

Horrible. Cheer competition and wrestling at Hy-Vee and a dog show at Hale means absolute chaos. Not enough parking. No one to help people find a spot to park, but don't worry. They still charge you to park. Muddy swamp galore. Too hot. Seats too crowded. Barely any room to move. No toilet paper in the bathrooms. Next time I will bring my own and also park in the west bottoms, so I don't have to pay to park in the swamp. Barely any seating for the cheer competition. Attended the wrestling event this weekend along with SEVERAL thousands of people with 2 other events also going on. Toilet paper in the women's restroom only in the early mornings and no soap. No attendants to come in to refill. Nasty. Also parking attendants accepted $$$ for parking (example: we paid for ours and our kids right behind our car) and she then charged them also. Rip off. 3 events at one time is way too many people. read more
