Okay, so I thought there were not any really great Indian restaurants in town. I am wrong. I brought my Indian guests here on the recommendation of friends, and even the pickiest "psh, I can make this at home" person was happy. Every dish was hot, fresh, flavorful. Everything we tried made us smile or say "mmh try this!" The curry leaf chicken and the go-to chicken dum biriyani were my favorites. The menu is big, so it does help to have some familiarity, but our server was also happy to help with recommendations and making sure we had an appropriate amount of food for our group of 6. It was a little cold close to the door on a cold night in December, and the interior decor is nothing special, but the food was a hit with both the Indians and non-Indians in my group. Service is a little spotty sometimes-- I think they've had the staffing issues so many places have had the past few years. But all the people are friendly and I just like this place. Wanted to try this place since it replaced a previous Indian restaurant. We had high hopes, but they were not fulfilled. The decor is much better and it's very bright inside. The issue is the service and food. The service was just not at a level beyond what you would get at a fast food hamburger joint. The waitress didn't bring our food until it was cold and also brought our appetizer and main course at the same time. The food was barely luke warm and we were not sure it was even correct. I ordered the chicken Tikka Masala and my wife ordered butter chicken. Both dishes looked the same. Check out the picture. Also the chicken was just cubed chicken breast that had been dropped into the sauce. Oh they don't make all dishes to order. To speed up take out, they have pre made sauces and if you order a common item it's poured from the pre-made batch. Just watch the window next to the kitchen. I really enjoyed what I ordered. I believe it was called malai kopfa. I had never had it before but it sounded good and it really was. My husband ordered the chicken vindaloo and although he said it was very spicy he thought it was really good. A friend ordered the biryani. IT WAS A HUGE PORTION. To be honest it would have been enough for all four of us. The staff was EXTREMELY nice and helpful and kept coming around to check on us. I enjoyed my vegetarian dishes here. The tea was good and hot as well. I drank the tea unsweet but others may need to add sugar or sweetener. The buffet items were hot and freshly cooked. Gross gross stay away! So as I was placing my order at the counter, there was a bug that literally crawled on my hand. At first, I thought it was a fly then I really looked at it and turned out to be a bug similar to a roach. I was able to shake my hand to get the bug off which then went onto the plate of the mouth freshener. I waited to see what the lady at the counter was going to do with that item. Hyderabad house!! This is a decent place for the biryani lovers!! They serve authentic hyderabadi biryani at least the veggie version . I'm sure the non-veg biryani tastes equally good! We have been here recently, we were actually headed to curry bowl but spotted this enroute. Mani who served us was very prompt and always smiling. My Indian mother is very, and when I say very, I mean EXTREMELY, particular about the quality of the Indian food she eats. Every Indian restaurant we go to, she's always complaining about something or the other. While on vacation here in Memphis, the craving for Indian food set in. There were already limited Indian restaurants to visit, but with it being thanksgiving day, majority of the restaurants were closed. The food was very good and we throughly enjoyed it. It was served hot and it had very good flavor. We had all the food in 'medium' spice level which is their lowest spice level, but it was still spicy enough to clear out your sinuses. Hyderabad House is a Texas Chain who just expanded to Memphis. This place is not a buffet (note: this is originally written years ago when they first opened; they now have lunch buffet). I ordered the Lunch Combo Chicken ($10.99). The biryani is really good here. And the curry sauce has fantastic flavors. I don't know how authentic is it, but I do like them. It's also more filling than the food I get from Curry Bowl, so I could eat less. I definitely want to come back with my Indian friend, so he could show me how to eat this! read more

My wife and I ate dinner here on a Friday night. The service was friendly and competent. I ordered the Andhra goat curry, requesting it spicy, and my wife ordered the sag panner, requesting it mild. We also selected roti (wheat bread, achar (pickle condiment), raita (yogurt), and galja kahalwa (carrot-based) for dessert. The service was reasonably prompt and the food was deliciious. Hyderabad is in the south of India, and the flavor reflected that tradition. South Indian food also tends to be spicy. My goat could have had more spice, but other than that we had no complaint. The achar was the best we've had in the area. We also drank excellent masala chai (Indian tea). There is no alcohol available, but there juices and soft drinks o the menu, as well as mango lassi if you want a real Indian drink. I would have ordered paratha with my meal, but it wasn't on the menu. Also, one of the desserts was not available. It would also have been nice to sample the bowl of sugared seeds that most Indian restaurants offer to departing customers, but there was none available. We'll certainly return. read more

Reading through some of the lower reviews and then some recent better ones it sounded like old management was replaced and the place had turned around in the past few months. I placed my order through Yelp and decided to give it a try. Great environment - not the cleanest but the employees were happy and laughter which is a big plus. Their network was down so they hadn't gotten my order but offered a couple samosas with mint chutney while I waited. Very good. The food I see looks great... It was a cool day in July. I ordered the Boneless Chicken Biryani. The website menu says the dish is $12.99 but I was charged $16.75. I didn't mind that much because I haven't had biryani in awhile and it's hard to find in Memphis. This place has a reputation for making food extra spicy so I ordered extra mild just in case. I enjoy spice, but due to years of alcohol abuse, coffee, and spicy food, my stomach can only handle so much. After picking my order up and on the drive home I, in horror, noticed the words 'Medium spice' on my receipt...I began to stress and have anxiety. Scenarios began to play out in my head involving me on the toilet the next day screaming to God to please take me from this pain. I got home and cautiously took a bite out of the chicken, instant inferno in my mouth. My heart sank as I stared down at the biryani, knowing all too well that if I ate this I would be in the fetal position all of the next day. In desperation, I dug out the chicken and tried rinsing it in hot water, still too much heat... I hung my head in defeat. An hour or so had passed, and after my 3rd Jack and coke, I was in a stare down with the biryani. I love Indian food so much. The dark voices, which have gotten me in so much trouble in my past, whispered in my ear, "do it". I caved and began to make my way towards the hellish biryani. A small voice then crept up and said, "no M, please don't do this, please". As usual, I ignore the words of reason. I tear the lid off the to-go container, drown the biryani in raita, and ravage it like a wild man... I could hear the dark voices laughing out loud as I buried fistful after fistful of that spicy chicken and rice in my mouth. After a full belly, I was lying on the ground somewhere in between the feeling of extacy and burning in hell, and all I could hear was that same small voice saying, "you fool, what have you done?" Tomorrow will be pure hell, and I deserve every minute of it. I will be back here again though, and again will be faced with the same challenge. My husband and I finally decided to give Hyderabad House a second chance after learning it is under new management since it is closer and much easier to park and get in on a Friday night. This is the review I *wanted* to be able to leave the first time! We are very happy with this experience! We even found some things that we liked *better* than Curry Bowl, which is saying something. The chutneys are outstanding! Samosas were fine, but oddly served with ketchup packets. The butter chicken is remarkable! The karaikudi chicken is delicious. Dosa and garlic naan are staple items which met expectations. Service was very friendly and our food came very quickly. The restaurant is clean and well-lit. We are so glad we tried again, and I'm sure this will become a frequent date-night spot! 4.5 stars would be a more appropriate rating. My previous review, just so you can see how far this place has come: "To begin with, the restaurant is not very clean, and we actually questioned whether the dishes it appeared we should use at the buffet were clean. They didn't look as clean as we would hope. As we sat down to give it the old commerce try, we found the food mediocre to not good at all. I visited this place twice, for the first time I order paneer butter masala and they served me paneer with chicken ( i am vegetarian and I was mad and just left this place. That was back last year and I visited them again yesterday, I ordered idli sambar (so i can see its not chicken) food was okay. The owner who happens to took my order was very unpleasant gentlemen when i ask him is idli fresh prepared he said i am trained to say its fresh even its not. read more

Excellent selection and quality of food on the buffet AND excellent service! I thought I had sampled almost everything that Northern and Southern Indians thought worth offering in the U.S. market, but I was wrong. Who would've thought the best pakora mix would only include onions?? The sambar and the vegetable biryani were both some of the best I've had. And to wrap up the meal with the custard / gelatin-like sweet, they were even nice enough to include chai with the buffet. The servers were all attentive and kind, and won me over with the friendly gestures towards all the kids at other tables. All in all, Hyderabad made it very easy - maybe TOO easy -- to sit and over-indulge. 11/01/2016 This review is strictly for the buffet effort. For now, I must say this is another Indian buffet fail for 38125. The food was just okay. If there were highlights on the buffet, it would be the Gobi Manchurian, the Naan, and the mixed vegetable biryani. The other food wasnt nasty, but in comparison to other spots in the city, not worth a second visit. Preparation: I arrived about 11:30. Just wasnt ready to serve the public. Had to ask for water, for naan, and for chutneys. Chutney arrived 20 minutes later, but at this point i have arrived that today was a trial meal. No one picked up my used plates. Atmosphere: school cafeteria I'm not above second attempts because i use to dislike Curry bowl until my Indian classmates insisted it was their favorite. The food was fine, Ambiance fine. As a woman, I would not recommend this place to other women. The server looked like he was going to tackle me when I approached him, smiled, and confirmed we were there for dinner - to eat in. He scowled at me and reluctantly sat us in a booth. When he came back to serve us water, he snatched the glass from my sons hand, slammed it down on the table and then filled it. Then he picked up a plastic glass from the serving bar behind us, filled it with water and set it on the table in front of me. My son asked, why was he so rude to me? What did I do wrong? When it was time to place our order, within the first 3 minutes of sitting down and looking at the menu, I said we needed just a minute more please. The waiter wouldn't look at me as I was speaking, and instead focused on my husband. Each time he came back to the table he would turn his back to me and face and speak my husband only. Too bad I was the one paying the bill. Too bad I was the one who recommended we try this Indian place. My tip reflected the service I received. We won't be returning. If you are a woman, I recommend you avoid this place at all costs. We watched as other women were treated the same way as I was, so it was not me, it was part of their "charm". The thing is, there are SO MANY Great places to eat here in Memphis, it doesn't break my heart to never patronize this place again. UPDATE: After receiving a response from this establishment which offered a full refund, I presented myself, the Yelp response (offering a refund) and my original bill to the manager on duty today, Jan 28, 2016. He asked me where I was coming from. After a brief discussion, he confirmed he would give me the full refund, which he did. Saw the ad on Facebook and decided to give it a try. We made our plates and sat down. Everything smelled good but as we started to eat by husband said " watch out" and pointed beside me. There was a roach climbing right towards me. We quickly noticed several more climbing on the walls. The one heading towards me was pregnant with a big egg sack on it. We love this place when we get our Indian food fix. I've had the Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, and Chicken Vindaloo. It is up there with some of the best I've had and I've had Indian/Pakistani food all over the planet (including Pakistan). They will even do the bone-in chicken pieces like I'm used to getting in the middle east/Asia. I wish you could get an order of Saag Paneer or Dal as a side item however. The naan is good but a single order is one piece cut in half. Some places you get more for an order so just be aware that each person may need their own order.
