Hyperion is the place that everyone knows because it has the best location in town and it's been around forever. And it's good for what it is... a place to get OK coffee and then continue with the rest of your day. They discourage people hanging around (probably because they're always so busy). Hyperion has always been good for a quick beverage, and their stuff is all right (I admit I'm a fan of the Monkeylicious frappe, which is chocolate and banana), but don't count on them being the best in town. They also don't make their food on site. Warning that if you get a bagel from them, they warm it up for you in a microwave instead of a toaster. read more

We go often during the weekdays around 930-1030. Love the atmosphere but the customer service is HORRID! I've never in my life met a group of people that are so miserable with life that they can't even smile, say good morning, hello, kiss my butt SOMETHING! They are just horribly rude. I don't get it. While I know that most coffee shops dedicate the majority of their passion to espresso drinks there are some of us that still enjoy a great cup of brewed coffee. I even know that this business name actually has the word "Espresso" in it but wouldn't you think they would provide a perfect cup of Joe to add to their ever expanding lineup of espresso concoctions? While there aren't many shops in town that roast their own beans as well as brew them, I would think that the selection of the right roast from your roaster is pinnacle. Not everyone wants to drop $6+ every day on a skim latte with a sweet little flower design on top.... just serve up a nice cup of coffee to the masses daily as the backbone to support those artistic and tasty endeavors. When I received my cup and tasted it I thought that it was the end of the pot in which they added hot water to extend it. It was beyond weak and I'm not an extreme dark roast guy. I asked for another cup and they had a pot that was just finishing its brew.... so I waited for it. After the pour and lidding, they served it up and I tasted this one and again it was beyond weak. They looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if it was watered down or the much hated City Roast. After going through the two cups I just walked out unpleased. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. I am from Fredericksburg and frequented this place for a long time, but never again will I spend a penny in this place. Yes, the place is quirky, cute, cozy, good coffee. But I WILL NOT SUPPORT the owner of this business for her rudeness and really bad customer service. I wanted to not give any STAR at all for this review. Last year, right before new year's on a weekday afternoon, my family went for a walk downtown and decided to stop by for coffee. I was with my mother, my brother and his family visiting from Sweden. I have always been proud of Fredericksburg until that afternoon in Fredericksburg at Hyperion. After paying for our coffee, my mom proceeded to fix her coffee. The sugar and milk were on the other side of the barista. It happened that the half and half container was empty so my mom informed the barista spoke to the barista. The barista responded with "Don't talk to me!" Very rude. The cashier overheard my mom and sweetly offered to help her. On a second incident, still during that same visit, my brother had ordered soy latte. Not aware of the rude treatment to our mother, he asked the barista if the cup of latte on the counter was the soy latte he ordered. Again, she very rudely responded with "What does it look like?" We formally spoke to the cashier to voice our complaints and she told us that there is nothing she could do about it because the rude barista is the owner. Hyperion does not exemplify what Fredericksburg stands for. We are a friendly community, offering the best service. read more

The sad thing about my review is that I have been going to this coffee bar for years. I just recently encountered the owner's wife in which she is one of the owners as well. I have never in all my years of being in sales which is over 20 years encountered such a rude and and unpersonable person owning an establishment that focuses around customer service. this day and age with the way the economy is how can anybody especially an owner of an establishment be so down right rude and mean. I used to love this place, and still do. But my biggest incentive for going was that I was able to sit outside and take in the beautiful Downtown Fredericksburg scenery, while enjoying a cup of coffee, a cigarette and a good book. Ever since they've banned smoking from their outdoor seating, I don't really go anymore. I get it, there are some people who don't like smoke, and I respect that. But the outside seating is big enough where you could make one side smoking and one side non smoking. Since then I have taken my business elsewhere to a place who doesn't discriminate against me just because I smoke. The biggest positive is the location. Their downtown location is almost perfect. It is a great place to either sit inside or outside on the street. The location is the only reason that this coffee shop exists. The drawbacks: a very cold and pretentious barista staff. You seem to be inconveniencing them by entering their store. Thus, they handle crowds and long lines very ineffectively. Expect a long slow line during peak hours. Their brewed coffee is poor to average. Their specialty drinks; lattes, mochas, frozen drinks, etc, are fair. Food selection is poor. Not a wide variety nor anything healthy. This is the best coffee café shop in Downtown Fred. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable!! The facility is well taken care of and very clean. My favorite drink is one of their cold lattes called "Monkeylicious"!! It's the best drink there and I always order it when I go there!! They have lots of selections on other drinks besides just coffee. They also sell loads of homemade pastries as well. I personally never tried one of them, but they look delicious!! Knowing that it's an independent coffee shop within walking distance of a college, it's pretty easy to imagine how busy Hyperion is basically all the time. Seriously, its unbelievable how busy this place can get on, say, a Friday night. The baristas move quickly, though, so you're usually not in line too long. There's usual coffee shop fare: all sorts of fancy coffees, some teas, smoothies, baked goods, etc. I'm not a coffee drinker, so there's not much I can say in that area; I always stick with the teas and am pleased. They also make an awesome apple cider that's perfect to sip on fall evenings while strolling through adorable historic Fredericksburg. This is a pretty good coffee place. I've been here twice now and I think the secret is to order a 16oz (grande) latte with 3 shots. First time I had 2 shots, which was basically tasteless. The next day I tried a 4 shot which is their standard for a 16oz. This was a bit too strong. Someday I will try the 3 shot sometime this week. This place is pretty great! The employees were really nice and helpful. I was thrilled they had non-dairy options, including almond milk, soy, and chocolate soy!!! The place had a flux of people... students, day shoppers... my drink came out quickly. I ordered a chocolate soy frozen yummy thing. I don't remember what it was called but it's delicious and worth the $5. They have a decent patio. The chairs aren't particularly comfortable but we're suitable for the time I spent enjoying the spring weather. There were lots of pedestrians and people waking their dogs. In the shop, they have a pastry case. Normally, I would give them a try but I didn't want to spoil my dinner. The customer service at Hyperion is absolutely terrible. I have stopped by multiple times after biking along the canal path on weekends and the experience has always been the same. They are always yelling at people to stay in line and bring the line toward the back. The actual drink (iced vanilla latte) taste good and has a good ratio of drink and ice. Are they overpriced? Yes. The brownie that I ordered tasted great, but it was overpriced too. If you find yourself walking around downtown and want to grab a quick coffee on the go then I would recommend this place. My wife and I usually come here every week after Sunday evening mass to get some coffee. The coffee was very good initially when we first started coming here, but have noticed a degradation in quality, and our last few visits where anything but pleasant. This last Sunday evening we ordered two large drinks to bring home with us. We politely asked for stickers to keep the contents from spilling since we drive and drink this at home. A lady (one of the owners) who was preparing the drinks refused to pick up a sticker that was lying right next to her and said to ask someone else to do this? I stated my displeasure as cordially as possible to her , and as she was preparing the second drink to my amazement she responded exactly as follows " You do want me to make you a good Expresso, don't you?". My wife and I are in our middle 40's, 50's with an established business in the area, and know this is no way how to treat a customer of any age, race, or gender. Our last few experiences here were unfriendly but this was off the chain and the last straw? This is not the only good coffee place in the Fredericksburg area and we're done here! read more
